Education / Tackle Challenges Bedeviling Education System, varsity Don Charges President Elec by schoolannexblog: 10:20am On Apr 20, 2015
“Our education system has failed us in that many graduates, including experts in agriculture are looking for white collar jobs”, these are the words of prof. Tolu Odugbemi, Vice Chancellor of Ondo State University of Science & Technology (OSUSTECH) okitipupa, in a congratulatory statement to president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd).
Prof. Odugbemi congratulated Buhari, his vice president-elect, prof. Yemi Osinbajo, especially President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, for the successful conduct of the March 28th polls.
The VC urged the general to cautiously tackle challenges bedeviling the country’s education system as well as make conscious efforts to address other societal challenges.
According to him, “What is the value of education if products of the education system do not impact positively on the society and environment? Education is meant to serve as a tool to improve our towns, local government areas, states, nigeria and the continent at large. Honestly, we are still lagging behind from an acceptable standard perspective.
“Across the country, pupils attending public primary schools are being subjected to formal instruction in dehumanising circumstances.
He also urging Nigerians to desist from paying homage or special solidarity visits to elected officers, he said such visits were unnecessary distraction for good governance.
Prof. Odugbemi stated that God has indeed given Nigerians “a rare opportunity to rebuild the country to the dream of all and now the time for teamwork and divine guidance.”

Education / Lagos State Governor-elect Pledges Not To Increase LASU Tuition Fees. by schoolannexblog: 9:46am On Apr 20, 2015
Lagos state governor-elect under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has pledged that there will be no increment in the school fees of the Lagos State University LASU when he assumes office on may 29th,2015.
Barely a year ago,LASU school fees was incredibly increased but the government was compelled by the students and other stakeholders to revert.
During a radio programme held at the university of lagos (Unilag) and anchored by chairman, Executive Trainers Limited, Dr Ayodele Ogunsan – in a build-up to the weekend governorship election, Ambode said: “I want to assure all the students of LASU, we would not increase school fees.”
He described as worrisome, the quality of graduates nigerian institutions of higher learning are churning out, this was so due to lack of attention given to the sector by the federal government.
His words: “If we say Lagos is the centre of excellence, we must then strive, deliberately, to ensure that whatever it is we are providing in terms of infrastructures, curriculum and content, the students actually benefit from them, because they are actually the future leaders of this country.
“The truth is that if we don’t start a succession plan from our higher institutions, then we are joking, because it is not about the people who are almost getting to 50 or 60 years and are going away.
It is actually about the younger one whose capacity we really need to start to build and then allow them to take over from us,” the UNILAG alumnus stated.

Education / Another Nigerian, Victor Agbafe Accepted Into 8 Ivy League University. by schoolannexblog: 8:52pm On Apr 19, 2015
While we are still celebrating Harold Ekeh’s feat, we are learning of another nigerian wonder, Victor Agbafe, who also got admitted into all eight Ivy league schools.
Agbafe, a nigerian high school of Cape Fear Academy, North Carolina, got accepted into 14 schools in all – including all eight Ivies. The 17 year old aspires to become a neurosurgeon and is strongly considering Havard, Yale, and Stanford, daily mail reports.
Just before he played a game for his school’s basketball team, he learned that Harvard had made a decision about his application – but he waited until the game was over to find out what the decision was. “I owed it my teammates to be focused there…I didn’t want to get too low on myself if I didn’t get in. I also didn’t want to get too high if I was accepted,” he said.
A report by business insider, states that Agbafe credits his achievements to having a strong support system in both his family and his community. “It wasn’t about that I did this, it was a positive thing for my family, my school, my community,” he said.
To fellow high school students who wish to achieve the same feat, he says: “Life is a roller coaster ride, and if you keep trudging forward and put forth your best effort, things are going to end up the way they should. Always stay positive, stay focused, stay humble, be hungry for — those are the keys to success.”

Education / American University Of Nigeria (aun) Joins The Global Priorities Group by schoolannexblog: 2:51pm On Apr 19, 2015
The American University of Nigeria (AUN) has now affiliated with the United Nations Academic Impact, a group of academic institutions that focus on world problems.
UNAI consists of nearly 1,000 colleges and universities in some 120 countries who are working with the united nations to promote global priorities. These include peace, human rights, and sustainable development, which have long been the focus at AUN.
Membership in UNAI will enable this nigerian university share its knowledge, its research, its expertise, and its programs with other universities throughout the world. Such networking often leads to unexpected gains for everyone, as successes in one nation can be duplicated elsewhere.
AUN has spearheaded efforts in local literacy campaigns, job training, recycling of waste products, and community development. Africa’s first “development university,” its mission closely fits with those of UNAI. Most recently, much focus has turned to helping nigerian refugees.
The Boko Haram attacks on civilians in the region have produced a massive wave of refugees, almost doubling the normal population of Yola, the Adamawa State capital and home of AUN. There are now more than 400,000 “displaced persons” in the city.
AUN, with its partner peace-building organization, the Adamawa Peace Initiative, has risen to the occasion. In the last few months, they have raised funds by appealing to public philanthropy–both in nigeria and internationally–to feed the hundreds of thousands of displaced; refugees are camping in various locations throughout the capital.
Many are being accomodated by the staff of the University in their own homes. Students, faculty, and staff of AUN have taken an active role in distributing food to the displaced. They have also opened their doors to faculty and students from universities destroyed in the north, so that education can continue.
It is hoped that membership in UNAI will not only help make the plight of the suffering in northeast nigeria better known, but provide a forum for sharing new development ideas and programs amongst educators throughout the world.

Education / RCCG Pastor Introduces Education Resource App by schoolannexblog: 11:15am On Apr 14, 2015
The national coordinator of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) mission in Belgium, Pastor Mike Chuks Nwanegbo has launched an educational resource app targeted at helping students to pass their examinations with ease.
The app called Nkuzi Mobile App runs on Android devices providing students with a mobile way of reading and solving past questions.
According to Paster Nwanegbo: “The idea is to make available past questions of GCE, JAMB, NECO and others to students through the mobile phone. Instead of students playing games on their mobile phones, they can now download Nkuzi mobile app for free. Once downloaded, the student can choose a subject and the app will present questions and answers by simply clicking a button ‘Get answer’.”
He told Guardian he found out lots of students spend their time playing games on their mobile phones instead of paying attention to their studies.
“So, I was moved to take their studies to them on their mobile world and this is a gift to the students in the land of my nativity”, he said.

Education / Cima Challenges Nigerian Under-graduates To Become Global Business Leaders by schoolannexblog: 11:01am On Apr 14, 2015
The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants ( CIMA ) has invited entries from undergraduates in universities, polytechnics and monotechnics across the country to participate in this year’s CIMA global business challenge (GBC).

The GBC is an international business competition hosted in conjunction with Barclays across 26 countries. This is the first time that nigeria will be competing in this prestigious competition which affords undergraduates the opportunity to test their skills and showcase their talents.

National winning teams will travel to Warsaw, Poland, in august to compete in the global final for the title of GBC global winners.

CIMA offers an international qualification in management accountancy and currently, world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants with over 227000 members and students in 179 countries.

Full-time undergraduate students with a passion for business and finance are invited to register for the Nigeria GBC challenge by 17 April. Teams of four register online atwww.cimaglobal.com.

Teams of four compete by analysing a case study based on CIMA’s test of professional competence and submitting a 3000 word report by 28 April. Once reports are submitted and assessed, four teams are selected and the short-listed will be announced. These teams are invited to participate in the Nigeria final in Lagos on 30 May 2015.

Commenting on the 2015 GBC, country manager (CIMA) Ijeoma Anadozie said: “The global business challenge is an internationally acclaimed platform which helps students exhibit the knowledge, skills and competency needed to make them future business leaders, while giving them a unique opportunity to test their analytical skills revolving around business and financial management. We have experienced a positive response from our initial discussions with universities and are expecting to receive sizeable number of registrations for the competition. The teams then need to ensure their reports are submitted on time for assessment and marking so as to be part of the competing team for the national final, which is to be announced.Last year’s GBC global finals was held in mumbai that however showcased talents from 24 teams.”

The CIMA global business challenge emphasises on CIMA’s vision to develop and nurture young talents around the world. It helps under-graduates foster better inter-personal and communications skills, by working together as a four-member team to present a business case study.
Previous years of the competition have featured more than 16,000 participants from over 550 universities across 26 countries that include the United Kingdom, South Africa, China, Singapore, India and Ghana. The CIMA global business challenge has grown consistently on yearly basis, i.e from eight (cool participating regions or countries in 2009 to twenty-six (26) in 2015.

Each team consists of four members, and they must be full-time/part-time undergraduate students studying their first degree from a reputable university, polytechnic or monotechnic. There is no upper limit on the number of teams, which can participate from any one university/institution.
