Largest Massacre of Christians in Syria Ignored

The worst Christian massacre-complete with mass graves, tortured-to-death women and children, and destroyed churches-recently took place in Syria, at the hands of the U.S.-supported jihadi "rebels"; and the U.S. government and its "mainstream media" mouthpiece are, as usual, silent (that is, when not actively trying to minimize matters).
The massacre took place in Sadad, an ancient Syriac Orthodox Christian habitation, so old as to bementioned in the Old Testament. Most of the region's inhabitants are poor, as Sadad is situated in the remote desert between Homs and Damascus (desert regions, till now, apparently the only places Syria's Christians could feel secure; 600 Christian families had earlier fled there for sanctuary from the jihad, only to be followed by it).
In late October, the U.S-supported "opposition" invaded and occupied Sadad for over a week, till ousted by the nation's military. Among other atrocities, 45 Christians-including women and children-were killed, several tortured to death; Sadat's 14 churches, some ancient, were ransacked and destroyed; the bodies of six people from one family, ranging from ages 16 to 90, were found at the bottom of a well (an increasingly common fate for "subhuman" Christians).
The jihadis even made agraphic video (with English subtitles) of those whom they massacred, while shouting Islam's victory-cry, "Allahu Akbar" (which John McCainequates to a Christian saying "thank God". Another video, made after Sadad was liberated shows more graphic atrocities.
Here are the words of Archbishop Selwanos Boutros Alnemeh, Syriac Orthodox Metropolitan of Homs and Hama (another detailed account, with pictures, appearshere):
What happened in Sadad is the most serious and biggest massacre of Christians in Syria in the past two years and a half…45 innocent civilians were martyred for no reason, and among them several women and children, many thrown into mass graves. Other civilians were threatened and terrorized. 30 were wounded and 10 are still missing. For one week, 1,500 families were held as hostages and human shields. Among them children, the elderly, the young, men and women…. All the houses of Sadad were robbed and property looted. The churches are damaged and desecrated, deprived of old books and precious furniture…What happened in Sadad is the largest massacre of Christians in Syria and the second in the Middle East, after the one in the Church of Our Lady of Salvation in Iraq, in 2010.
In the Iraqi attack of 2010, al-Qaeda linked jihadis stormed the church during service killing some 60 Christian worshippers (seehere for graphic images of the aftermath).
While the archbishop is correct that this is the "largest massacre of Christians in Syria," it is but the tip of the iceberg of the persecution the nation's Christian minority has suffered-including beheadings, church bombings, kidnappings, rapes, and dislocation of hundreds of thousands of Christians-since the war broke out (see Syria entries in monthly persecution series).
A month before Sadad, another ancient Christian region, Ma'loula, one of the world's very few regions that still spoke Aramaic, the language of Jesus, was besieged by the jihadis, its churches bombarded and plundered, its inhabitants forced to convert to Islam or die. The last words of one man who refused were: "I am a Christian, and if you want to kill me for this, I do not object to it."
The archbishop concluded his statement concerning Sadad by asking: "We have shouted aid to the world but no one has listened to us. Where is the Christian conscience? Where is human consciousness? Where are my brothers? I think of all those who are suffering today in mourning and discomfort: We ask everyone to pray for us."

That no "human consciousness" is to be found in the White House, or in the editorial offices of the leading Western media, is now a matter of well-established record. Just try searching for "Sadad" (or alternatively "Saddad" on the websites of the Department of State orThe New York Times. Ditto the leading European dailies, the CNN/BBC/RTF, the human-rights defending "NGOs" et al.
The problem, of which Archbishop Selwanos Boutros Alnemeh appears unaware, is no longer in the Western elite's mere indifference to the impending demise of Christianity in the lands of its birth, but in its active, ongoing, and open contribution to that demise. Cyprus (1974) and the Balkans (1991-9) provided the test, Iraq (2003-today) the conclusive proof. In Syria the Obama administration remains committed to supporting the rebels-ah, yes, only the "moderate" ones, like the Christian-murdering "Free Syrian Army" (discretion advised again), not "even though" the result will be the same, but precisely because it will be.
Inone of the Arabic videos documenting the aftermath of the Sadad massacre, as the mutilated bodies of one family are drawn from a well (around :30 second mark), a middle-aged male relative, in tears, says:
The most precious in the whole universe [his family], are now gone, leaving me alone, but thank God I am still surrounded by these loving people who remain. I want to say, let people [the jihadis] return to their minds. The problems of the world can only be solved by knowledge and brains. Enough insanity, the nerves of the people are shredded. Enough, enough-return to your minds; you people, you humans-return to your humanity, enough crimes.
As a sign of the times, here is a Syrian, an "easterner," evoking rationalism and humanity, products of Christian civilization, at a time when the post-Christian West is governed by anything and everything-propaganda, emotionalism, mindless indoctrination-but the twain.

As Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei holds, “The Muslim world has many questions in this regard. The death of more than 1,000 people is no small matter. Instead of projection and incriminating this or that, Saudis must accept their responsibility and apologize to the Muslim Ummah and bereft families (of the victims)…”
Undoubtedly, the Muslim world expects all this and more. They will never forget the Mecca tragedy; nor will they ever forgive those responsible. They want answers and they want solutions now. The Saudis must stop the blame game and idle talk:
They first blamed some “noncompliant” and “inexperienced” pilgrims for the crowd crush; then they blamed “heat” and “exhaustion”; then they blamed “two groups of prospectus pilgrims that crossed each other”; then they blamed “a crowd walking in the opposite direction”; then they blamed “the Africans”; then they blamed “the Iranians…” But Wait until you hear this: Amid the growing public backlash, the Saudi Grand Mufti came up with a perfect excuse: He declared, “Saudi authorities are blameless. The crowd crush was fate, an act of God!”
It’s a terrible way of blaming God for what happened in Mecca due to systematic negligence and error. Conceivably, Saudis will even blame ‘gravity’ if that helps them escape liability! Because why not?
In this particular case, they persist in a dissatisfying relationship with the Muslim world, unwilling either to work toward solutions or end it and move on. They know changing will lead to the unknown (change in the authority in charge of administering the Hajj pilgrimage). They also know the unknown will be much more painful than what they’re already experiencing in the aftermath of Mecca tragedy - in which their half a truth is a whole lie.
This is not an attempt to “politicize” a horrific tragedy - as Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir would like to allege “Iran is doing.” It’s just a polite way of saying you are not fit to administer Hajj. When you carelessly lead thousands of prospectus pilgrims to a death trap, it means you are not able to channel and protect one of the world’s largest regular human migrations. So the least you could do is stop insulting the intelligence of the Muslim community and step down.
Saudis should fear themselves because they refuse to do what’s best for them. Their hands are stained with the blood of innocent people and still they refuse to learn anything from the man-made disaster. Even if they have learned something, they will find themselves no wiser than before. They are full of murderous resentment and idle talk: of the mind, covetousness, hatred, and error.
As Ayatollah Khamenei holds, “The world of Islam should find a solution to this problem.” That solution has to include a change in the authority of Hajj administration. Al Saud foolishly believe they are still the guardians of Mecca, Islam’s holiest city, and that they should be allowed to run the Hajj pilgrimage anyhow!
This is absurd, because Mecca belongs to the Muslim world. It is not a Saudi possession. Lest they forget, this is not the first time they have been directly responsible for the horrific deaths of thousands of pilgrims either. They remind us of the man who murdered both his parents, and then when the sentence was about to be pronounced, pleaded for mercy on the grounds that he was orphan.

Russia Returns to the Middle East

These autumn days are the most important in the Middle East calendar. The Muslims celebrate Eid al Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice; the Jews fast at Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement; and the Eastern Orthodox Christians rejoice at Nativity of Our Lady Mary. It appears, surprisingly, the best place to be at this time is Moscow, where Putin received in quick succession the Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Turkish ruler Recep Erdogan.
They did not come for the lovely Indian summer that blessed Moscow this week, not for the yellow and red leaves covering the maple and birch trees, though this sumptuous new Xanadu is quite fetching this time of the year; its streets refashioned at enormous expense, parks tended by best gardeners; bicycle paths and sidewalks repaved and even its feared traffic jams abated somewhat.
Ostensibly, Abbas and Erdogan came to unveil, together with Putin, the grand new Cathedral Mosque of Moscow, a vast and opulent structure where ten thousand worshippers can pray at once. This city has more Muslims than many a Muslim city has; about two millions of its 14 million dwellers are nominal Muslims.
They unveiled the mosque all right, and used this occasion for a good lengthy talk with Putin. So did Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli PM, who gave a miss to the mosque. And he came with his top brass: the head of staff and the head of military intelligence, after a long-time no-see.
This sudden interest to Moscow is a sign that the Russian entry into the Syrian fray has been playing to a full house. When, some three weeks ago I reported on this decision of Kremlin, my report was met with great doubt, to say the least. Could it be that Russia, after being licked in the Ukraine, will venture that far from home? They were supposed to sulk in the Kremlin under the heavy load of sanctions, not roam around. Now the facts on the ground had justified my previous report. Russian soldiers and marines, Russian weapons, jets and boats are seen on the shore; they are building a new base and fighting the enemy, giving a new lease of life to the embattled Syrian state.
The rumours of Russian demise and of Syrian collapse has been somewhat premature. Putin’s push for peace in the Ukraine (so condemned by hotheads) allowed him to stabilise Donbass. Half a million refugees poured back into this fertile and developed region, the Russian Ruhr. After calm in Donbass was established, Putin’s hands were free to act elsewhere, and he did.
Resilient Russia came back into the Middle East, and that’s an unexpected fact. Unexpected, as for a few years it seemed that the Russians lost interest in the Middle East. They were busy elsewhere: trying to make friends with Europe, staging the Olympics, and then keeping out of the Ukrainian trouble as much as they could. And then the US troops and tanks were stationed on the Russian border in the Baltic states, a few hours’ drive to St Petersburg. Only in the last moment, when the Syrian collapse seemed a matter of weeks if not days away, the Russians woke up and rode to save their ally Bashar al-Assad.
This move has changed the rules of the game. The US became interested in Russia again, and President Obama asked for a meeting with President Putin during his visit on September 28, 2015 to New York for the UN General Assembly Jubilee 70thSession. Just a few days ago such a meeting was completely out of consideration.
The US plans to dispose of Syria as they find fit were thrown to disarray by the Russian involvement. So were plans of Qatar and the Saudis. A new reality began to be informed, not a moment too early.
Turkey
Putin’s meeting with Recep Erdogan of Turkey came in a crucial moment. Turkey is a net victim of the Syrian crisis, despite being a contributor to its gravity. Erdogan believed the Americans and the Europeans who told him that Bashar Assad will fall in a few weeks. He accepted and invited Syrian refugees to his country, established huge camps for refugees, provided for them. Now Turkey has 2 million Syrian and Iraqi refugees and has spent eight billion dollars caring for them. This burden is a main reason for recent electoral defeat of Erdogan and his party: the refugee operation is just too costly and ruinous for the not-too-robust Turkish society.
The US proposal for Turkey to join the US-led coalition has been hesitantly accepted, but quickly it became clear that this road leads nowhere. The Turkish plans to establish a no-fly zone near the Syrian-Turkish border triggered the Russian involvement, for after its implementation, Bashar Assad and the Syrian state would be beyond saving. After the Russian decision, the Turks lost any way out.
They reacted by letting loose the wave of refugees upon Europe. The Europeans were rather upset, but they have to regret their own actions. They pushed for removal of Bashar Assad, supported anti-Assad fractions, and did not want to pay for the refugee stay in Turkey. The Turks could not keep all two million refugees pent up in their country without considerable support of Europe, and such support was not forthcoming. So the Turks allowed the Europeans to feel the stream of refugees on their own skin.
Probably we can add that the US did not object to the Turkish letting off the steam. The US ruling elites always thought that European countries are too homogeneous, and some dilution by immigrants will make them more similar to the US in their composition.While in Moscow, President Erdogan called President Putin his “dear brother”, a title usually reserved to the kings of the region and close allies. His officials for the first time ever mouthed the main idea of Putin: any arrangement in Syria should be made with President Bashar Assad. Please remember that even a few days ago, before the Russians stepped in, the Turks were adamantly sticking to the American mantra “Assad must go”.
Now this important mental barrier was taken; Erdogan and Putin renewed their discussion of the South Stream gas pipeline that was frozen for a few months. The negotiations weren’t completed, but it seems that things began moving.
Israelis and Palestinians
For Israel the Russian involvement meant that their old freedom of bombing whomever they feel like is over, or at least has been restricted. It is one thing to bomb practically defenceless Syrians, as Israelis did a dozen times for last year, and quite a different thing to operate jets within lidless eyesight of the S-300 radar and Su-27 interceptors with the Russian aces in the cockpits. That’s why Netanyahu took himself to Moscow on the eve of Yom Kippur.
Netanyahu came to deliver an ultimatum of his own. The Russians, and their allies, Assad, Iran and Hezbollah have to choose whether they intend to save Bashar Assad or to fight Israel. Both missions can’t be accomplished. If they fight Israel, Israel will destroy Assad.
Putin said that they do not intend to fight Israel. Assad is in such a poor shape that he can’t fight Israel. Even saving him alone is hard enough as he controls between 20% and 30% of the national territory, though it is most populated part of Syria, while the rest of the territory is mainly desert.
Netanyahu claimed his freedom to bomb Iranians and Hezbollah wherever it suits him. He is still obsessed with Iran, as Iranians, in his view, re-arm Hezbollah, modernise Hezbollah’s weaponry, and plan to open a second front against Israel on the Golan Heights. While first two claims may be true, the third one is a sheer invention.
Netanyahu is worried that the advanced Russian weapons may find its way to Lebanon, and this will limit Israel’s God-given right to bomb Lebanon. The Russians do not want their advanced weapons to leak out of Syria, either, so there is no great disagreement between them and the Israelis. However, while Israelis say such leakage occurs, the Russians deny that vehemently. Now, and at their previous encounter, the Israeli leader claimed he knows (“trust me!”) that the most advanced Russian weapons found its way to Lebanon, while Putin dismissed the claim as an unproven one.
It seems that Netanyahu still smarts for a fight. The American president refused him his innocent wish to destroy Iran and made the agreement with his archenemy. Even worse, as we learned from his former Defence Minister Ehud Barak, Netanyahu’s generals also rebelled against Bibi’s plans to attack Iran. But Netanyahu does not give up. He seeks to destroy Iran or at least Hezbollah, the most potent fighting force in the area.
Israel is much stronger than Hezbollah, and it has no reason to be afraid of Hezbollah’s attack. If Israel does not attack, nobody attacks Israel. But this MAD-like equation is not acceptable for Netanyahu: he seeks immunity and impunity for his strikes. Hezbollah denies him this impunity and can demand a heavy price for a new bombing campaign.
A Hotline
At Netanyahu’s request, the Russians and the Israelis agreed to establish a hotline between their militaries in order to minimise the chance of their hostile encounter. This is a normal practice: such a hotline functioned in 1974 between warring Israel and Egypt during the cease-fire so a local shoot-out will not escalate into an unwanted general conflagration.
This is not cooperation, not joint planning, not an arrangement between the allies. Just a device to prevent unwanted firefights. And it is a good thing. Israel and Russia can’t be allies: they pursue mutually opposing aims and their allies are quite different. Israel befriended Jabhat an Nusra, a Syrian branch of al Qaeda, an extremist Sunni group. Two thousand Nusra fighters received medical treatment in Israel and returned to fight Assad. Israel is moderately hostile to Bashar Assad, bombed the Syrian Army’s positions and attacked their bases with the help of the Nusra. Israel is implacably hostile to Russia’s allies in Syria, Iran and Hezbollah, and is quite indifferent to Da’esh (ISIS). That’s why the talk of Russian-Israeli alliance in Syria is just an attempt to mislead you.
However, President Putin is very friendly to Israel and to Jews. His friendship will not cause him to surrender Syria or to break up with Iran, but even the greatest friend of Israel on this planet, the US, is mindful of its own interests. At many occasions Putin promised to save the Jews if things will go utterly wrong for them. It seems he has in mind a mass evacuation of Israeli Jews to Russia as the last resort, like Russia did for the Polish Jews in 1939 thus saving millions of them from the Nazi fury. Needless to say we are very far away from such an apocalyptic scenario.
It seems Putin has some close personal friends among the Russians in Israel, for he often stresses that the 1.5 million strong Russian community in Israel (actually, about 0.5 million at the best) is the bridge and the guarantee of their friendship. He made a generous present of some 5 billion roubles (90 million dollars) per annum to the Russian Jews in Israel for their pension fund. (The US gives much more, but mainly for weapons, and it goes to Israeli generals).
Putin received Netanyahu warmly, as his old-time friend. So was Netanyahu, who indicated that he is tired of Americans. Putin did not take this ball: he did not believe Netanyahu is likely to ditch the US and run away with the Russkies to the hayloft. But both enthused in their friendly vibes. Putin wished Bibi to be inscribed in the Book of Life, showing an unexpected knowledge of Jewish customs.
Putin and Jews
Putin is so friendly with the Jews in Russia that the Israeli newspaperHaaretzsaid the Russian Jews never had it that good. He allows the Chabad Hassids to build anew the Jewish community in Russia, as the old one disintegrated after mass emigration to Israel and as a result of assimilation and intermarriage. In Moscow alone, they build thirty synagogues (comparing with just two mosques and some three hundred churches), though there are just a few hundred synagogue-going Jews in the whole of Moscow, at best.
The Chabad imports Jewish families from Israel, from the US and from Europe, and they are frequently seen around town in their distinctive garb. It remains to be seen whether they plan to establish a new Jewish community, or use it for a big-time real estate grab, as some people claim. Practically in every Russian city there is a synagogue and a community centre on the most desirable and expensive plot of land established and run by the Chabad, while traditional Jewish communities were dispossessed by the Chabad and disappeared.
Is Putin so Jews-friendly because he thinks it is a good strategy? Perhaps. Even now he is often described in the Western media as a new Hitler, how much worse it would be if the Jews in Russia or Israel would consider him an enemy. On the other hand, he can be sincere, as he read law in St Petersburg U and had had many Jewish friends. He also worked with the mayor of St Petersburg who had many Jews in his entourage. His choice of Chabad is not so easy to justify, but perhaps they were prepared to build Jewish life while staying away from politics.
Judo Master
His good relations with Netanyahu cause him no harm, either. Netanyahu is still a very powerful man, able to summon a majority in the US Senate, and an ally of Saudi Arabia, the strongman of the Arab world. Putin’s manners are non-confrontational; a Judo master, he does not argue with his opponent, rarely voices his disagreement. Thus he agreed with Netanyahu’s proposal of the hotline, or a joint commission of the military. I doubt this commission will be fruitful. If Bibi will forewarn the Russians of his planned attacks on the Syrian positions, the attacks will be useless; still the commission and the hotline will reduce the danger of unintentional confrontation.
Almost immediately after meeting with Netanyahu, Putin also met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. This meeting was also very friendly. Abbas told him of the trouble around Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, where Jewish religious fanatics play havoc and cause confrontations. He mentioned the seizure of Christian lands near Beit Jalla and other multiple troubles, including new Israeli licence to shoot Palestinian children with live fire of 0.22 calibre. Abbas encouraged Putin to save Syria from disintegration, and heard Putin’s explanation of Russian plans. It appears that Mahmoud Abbas will not retire and return the keys of the PNA at the UN General Assembly in a few days, as some observers expected, though this is not final yet.
This double meeting raised the Russian diplomacy to a new level. Until now, only American presidents were able to meet both Israeli and Palestinians in a friendly way and extend their patronage. Now Russia graduated to this supreme position, and that is certainly a great achievement of Putin, already justifying his decision to engage in Syria.

Incidentally, I could be wrong about this, but I think it’s possible that Emerson got ‘Brahman’ mixed up with ‘Brahma’. They are not the same. And it isBrahman, not Brahma, that Emerson has to be talking about.

This has been said so often by the great philosophers of Vedanta—by Shankara, Ramanuja, and Madhva among the great medievalists and by their modern disciples Ramakrishna, Vivekananda, Aurobindo and Radhakrishnan—that it is now taken as a self-evident truth, based on personal experience of the divine presence, that Brahman is the Absolute Ineffable. The general idea is this: the less said about Brahman the better, for the more said, the more certain it is to be misleading, inaccurate, and not worth saying.He who speaks, lies.
The great Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu, speaking of the equally mysteriousTao(the Way), puts it beautifully in a pithy and memorable phrase: ‘Those who know do not
say. Those who say do not know.”
It follows paradoxically from the above that everything I’ve said here about Brahman has to be “misleading, inaccurate, and not worth saying”, since I have been foolish enough to put into words what is beyond language. But the same applies toanyonewho talks about these matters when the best policy is silence. To quote the inimitable Lao-Tzu again: “The usefulness of a pot comes from its emptiness.” (Tao Te Ching)

Apuzzling question arises: given Brahman’s self-sufficiency, its perfection and need of nothing apart from itself, why does Brahman choose to manifest at all? Why fragment itself into multitudinous beings and assume the limitations of matter when mind alone—its own Overmind—is surely more than sufficient? Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) does his best to answer this riddle.
“If, then, being free to move or remain eternally still, to throw itself into forms or retain the potentiality of form itself, it indulges the power of movement and formation, it can be only for one reason, for delight.” (Sanskrit:ananda).

Brahman, in other words, delights in realizing the infinite possibilities inherent in its own nature.Ananda, it must be remembered—meaning bliss/ joy/delight—is not an attribute or quality of Brahman but is Brahmanitself,along with Being and Consciousness. These three, Being-Consciousness-Bliss, form a triune unity subsumed under the Sanskrit term SAT-CIT-ANANDA which is a synonym for Brahman.
SAT= Being, existence.
CIT(sit, chit)= Consciousness, mind.
ANANDA= Bliss, delight.
That the One should become Many, because it derives delight and satisfaction from doing so, is not the answer in my humble opinion. This completely neglects to take into account the existence of evil and pain.
According to the Vedantic philosophy, Brahman is—indeed, has to be—both predator and prey, oppressor and victim, torturer and tortured. Take note of this extraordinary situation in the Emerson poem above: Brahman is here described as the “red slayer” as well as the “slain”. Brahman apparently takes delight in being the torturer who inflicts pain, but how can the victim experiencing the torture (who is also Brahman) take delight in being tortured? It makes no sense at all. We have reached an impasse and must begin again from scratch.
Let’s look at it another way.
If existence ismayaor illusion—if life is basically a “dream” from which we will one day awaken—then we are no more than fictional characters in a super novel (or play or movie) that is all taking place in the mind of Brahman. We all know that the pain in a horror movie isn’t real. Hannibal Lecter never really killed and tortured anyone. It’s all make-belief. This is no consolation however to Hannibal Lecter’svictimsif, in their own plane of virtual existence, they are actually experiencing the most horrendous agonies—agonies of pain whichto us, on an altogether different plane of reality, are purely fictional.
There are other more frightening ways of explaining these labyrinthine complexities. These all lead us into a maze of madness. Can God be evil and capricious? Can evil be part of his nature? Are God and Devil in partnership? Questions few dare to ask. Merely asking these questions in past times would have merited death.
A memorable line in Shakespeare’sKing Learhints at the scary possibility that God isn’t particularly “good”.“As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods, they kill us for their sport.”Not everyone, it seems, is happy with the philosophy of Vedanta which fails to explain the problem of Evil. Here is the great Persian poet, Omar Khayyam, influenced no doubt by Zorastrianism, throwing down the gauntlet to God in Fitzgerald’s brilliant translation of theRubaiyat:
“Oh, Thou, who Man of baser Earth didst make
And who with Eden didst devise the Snake;
For all the Sin wherewith the Face of Man
Is blacken’d, Man’s Forgiveness give—andtake!“
I have put that final word into italics. The 12th-century Persian poet is making no bones about it. He is blaming God for screwing up, for making a right royal mess of things.
Are there parallels with Vedanta here? Not in the above quote, but there are parallels elsewhere. The concept ofmaya, the dreamlike illusoriness of life, is a common feature. Life is real enough for those living it. That’s for sure. Pain is real. And yet there is the prevalent underlying idea that, behind all the reality, Life is a dream. A mirage in the mist of Brahman’s mind. A phantasmagoria. Here is theRubaiyatagain:
“‘Tis all a Chequer-board of Nights and Days
Where Destiny with Men for Pieces plays:
Hither and thither moves, and mates, and slays.
And one by oneback in the Closet lays.”
I have italicized the final phrase. We humans are seen here as no more than chess pieces on Brahman’s chessboard. When the game of life is over, we are put back in the cupboard. We sit there in the dark, waiting to be brought out for the next game. Who is Brahman playing chesswith? No one but himself, given that in Vedanta only Brahman exists in any real sense and all other beings are phantasmagoric projections of the divine reality. Can Brahman play chess with himself? How can that be? Well, whatever the outcome, Brahman must experience the delight (ananda) of winning every game. Unfortunately, he must also have the disappointment of losing constantly—unless, of course, he doesn’t mind losing and derives pleasure from doing so.
As we can see, this is a hopeless paradox. We are wasting our time chopping words and chasing shadows. We are indulging in idle chatter. Everything we say about Brahman is futile and nonsensical. The only recourse we have, as Lao Tzu pointed out long ago, is to take refuge in silence.‘Those who know do not say. Those who say do not know.”
One thing is certain. The knowledge of Brahman cannot be gained through book study or sense experience or the scientific method. Such knowledge can only be arrived at through intensive meditation, worldly renunciation, shattering austerities, and sexual continence: in short, after a long process of self-purification such as all the great sages from time immemorial have had to undergo. As Vergil once said:Sic itur ad astra — “thus one gets to the stars.”
Jesus summed it up best : “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

Is there a meaning to life . . . or is it all just a bad joke?
I was at my lowest ebb, at the point of suicide, when I opened a little white book in a second-hand bookstore in India and read these electrifying words that were to change my life and give me new hope:
“All that we are is the result of what we have thought. It is founded on our thoughts, it is based on our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain always follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him like his shadow that never leaves him.”
These are the opening lines of theDhammapada, a Buddhist classic; a very short book of precious wisdom reportedly containing the words of the founder of Buddhism himself, Gautama Buddha. The mind, according to theDhammapadda, is indeed everything. It is preeminent. Mind did not arise out of matter, as the prevailing idea in modern science appears to be, but matter arouse out of mind.
Mind came first.
The great physicist Sir James Jeans was once asked in an interview: “Do you believe that life on this planet is the result of some sort of accident, or do you believe that it is a part of some great scheme?”
He replied:
“I incline to the idealistic theory that consciousness is fundamental, and that the material universe is derivative from consciousness, not consciousness from the material universe. In general, the universe seems to me to be nearer to a Great Thought than to a great machine. It may well be that each individual consciousness ought to be compared to a brain-cell in a Universal Mind.” (See here)
Bertrand Russell was to refine this view.
There was no separate “mind stuff” and “physical stuff” in the universe; they are one and the same. This view, technically known as neutral monism, is quite popular nowadays and is held to be the truth by many scientists, including VS Ramachandran, professor of neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego, and adjunct professor of biology at the Salk Institute. “Perhaps mind and matter,” he notes, “are like two sides of a Möbius stripthat appear different but are in fact the same.” (The Emerging Mind, Reith Lectures 2003, p.37).
Uncanny inklings of all this can be found in Buddhism and Vedanta. The great Indian mystics, Shankara, Madhva and Ramanuja, taking their inspiration from theUpanishads, already knew what the scientists of the future would discover for themselves many years later: that the Universe is a live and conscious Super Being.

Iwould now like to say a few words about Brahman and the philosophy of Vedanta and will begin by quoting a short poem by Emerson called “Brahma”. This will serve as an introduction.

Ralph Waldo Emerson(1803-82), was an American writer much influenced by Indian philosophy. His poem “Brahma” is a poetic attempt to encapsulate Vedanta, the non-dualistic teachings of the Hindu sages which are based on theUpanishads. This is the idea that there is only ONE transcendental Being,Brahman, and that all other beings exist merely as fragments in Brahman’s mind.
Enlightenment for the individual human being consists in realizing that the individual soul, theAtman, is part of Brahman: just as the water drop in the ocean is part of the ocean and is one with it.
To realize that in a sense oneISBrahman is to achieve the ultimate insight:Tat tvam asi, or “That thou art.”

In the higher realms of consciousness the individual human identity disperses like mist or vapor and the self is seen to be illusory and part of the world illusion,maya. Existence itself simply becomes an elaborate game or sport in which Brahman enters into each individual being and experiences their livesthroughthem. This is known in Sanskrit aslila,or sport.
In practice this means that all of us actors on the human stage are Brahman playing different roles. The lover and the loved one are not two different beings; they are in essence the same being playing different parts in an elaborate play. They have forgotten, having been encumbered with different masks or personas, that they are thesame being—the same Being behind their individual masks or personalities.
They have forgotten, alas, that they are sockpuppets of Brahman!
Emerson hints at this in his poem but does not make the distinction altogether clear. However, theSvetasvatara Upanishadspells it out clearly for all to see. Addressing Brahman, it says:
Thou art woman, thou art man,
Thou art the youth, thou art the maiden,
Thou art the old man tottering with his staff;
Thou facest everywhere.

Pope Francis speaking before Congress this morning did something highly unusualfor a “man of God”, he didn’t open up in prayer. He did not invoke God in any way, shape or form. Instead, he jumped right into preaching the Laodicean gospel of social justice. What a phenomenal opportunity to bring Jesus Christ to the spotlight as the entire free world was watching! But no, Jesus never even got an ‘honorable mention” from the “ vicar of Christ“. Wow. I preached in church this past Sunday, and we wouldn’t even begin until we had prayed and asked for the Lord’s blessing. How much more should the Pope have done this? Take a look at the photo below and see the Pope starting his remarks by giving the Satanic Illuminati “OK” sign, and you’ll know why he didn’t bother to pray to God before speaking, he was already talking with his god. And you wonder why we call him the False Prophet?
In Satanism, when making this sign the three fingers not used to make the circle are considered symbolic of the unholy trinity — horned God, Goddess, and offspring (antichrist). The bent three fingers are shaped as three number six’s, or 666. Thus, we have 666, the sun deity (Lucifer), the Goddess (Mystery, Babylon the Great, Mother of Harlots), and the beast (antichrist, 666), all in one unitary hand sign.
After that stunning spiritual flop, Pope Francis then spoke about how much he wished to “enter into a dialogue” with the American people. This is where the rambling started, and the audience in attendance began to grow confused, not sure where to applaud or even if to applaud. At the 15:00 mark, he began to talk about out of control capitalism, and the evils of money. In an ironic twist. he left out the fact that the Vatican is the world’s richest corporationand has incalculable riches within it’s vaults.
At the 24:00 mark, he started promoting illegal immigration, and chastising America for not letting more illegals in over our borders. He called it a sin to not allow more illegals in, and that we should “reject a mindset of hostility” towards them. What part of the word “illegal” does the Pope not grasp? At this point he invoked the “golden rule” and got the obligatory standing ovation. It’s now the 30:00 mark, and I am still semi-patiently waiting for the “ vicar of Christ” to give Jesus a shout out. Crickets., nothing but crickets.

He said there should be “hope, forgiveness and rehabilitation” for thegay pedophile bishops who committed decades of vile sex crimes. He said NOTHING to the victims and their families. Not one word. The message the Pope sent is thatthe Catholic church has no desire to do one bit more than the law will force them to do. If I was a Catholic, at this point and for this reason alone, I would instantly abandon the wicked Vatican institution known as the Catholic church. Shameful and disgusting.Francis talks incessantly about “healing the world”, and he won’t even help to heal the victims that his own church created.Spoken like the lying, hypocritical False Prophet that he is.
At the 51:00 mark, Francis again invoked the memories of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. in an ongoing bid to call America to social justice. Still no references to God, Jesus Christ or to the Holy Spirit. The 4 Iranian hostages with one of them being a Christian pastor? Not a word. I guess they don’t count. He then closed his “sermon” by saying “God bless America”. Finally, the “vicar of Christ” mentioned God.
America, behold your False Prophet. Please step up and take the Mark.

According to Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, Adel al-Jubeir, the newly appointed foreign minister tacitly recognized his country's failure to rout Single-handedly Yemen's anti-Saudi rebels and called on regional allies,namly Qatar and UAE, to help Saudi Arabia to end the protracted war on Yemen.
"I personally discussed the Yemeni issue with His Royal Highness the King and to find a feasible solution to terminate this dilemma, I suggested Israeli help as our only hope to end the status quo , as they[Israelis] are highly skilled and indeed proficient in this kind of warfare through decades in their confrontations with Lebanese and Palestinian militias and to my delight, His Highness King Salman put this proposal forward for further consideration," Qatari News Agency (QNA) quoted Mr. Al-Jubeir as saying on Friday during his recent regional tour to Arab Gulf States.

Saudi capital faces Iran-backed missile threat

As fighting in Yemen continues to escalate, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have plans to fire ballistic missiles into Riyadh, the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia, according to Middle Eastern defense officials speaking to WND.
Such a move would be a game-changer in the months-long battle for control of Yemen that already has spilled across the Saudi border.
In June, marking the first use of ballistic missiles by the Houthis in the conflict, the rebels fired a Scud missile at Saudi Arabia, which the kingdom said it shot down. The Houthi rebels and its allied armies had fired the Scud toward the southwest Saudi town of Khamees Mushait, which houses the largest air force base in southern Saudi Arabia.
Three weeks earlier, WND broke the story that, despite the presence of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt off the coast of Yemen at the time, the Iranians succeeded in smuggling Scud B and C missiles to the rebels fighting in Yemen
In August, the Houthis again fired a Scud toward southern Saudi Arabia. The Saudi military said it intercepted the missile and retaliated with air strikes on Yemeni territory.
WND reported in May on the delivery of the Scuds to the Houthi rebels, citing Jordanian security officials. The security officials described the possession of the missiles by the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels as a direct threat to the Saudi kingdom and its oil fields.
The Jordanian officials said the Scuds could endanger Saudi Arabia and potentially disrupt the global oil market.
WND further reported in Aprilthe Russian navy aided Iranian ships attempting to bring arms to the Tehran-backed rebels in Yemen, according to informed Middle Eastern defense officials.
The defense officials said the Russian navy ships were maneuvering to create a clear path for the Iranian vessels to bypass the U.S. fleet and arrive in Yemen.
The officials said Saudi Arabia, which backs the embattled Yemeni government, filed a complaint with Moscow about the purported Russian naval movements.
It was not immediately clear where the Russian navy was attempting such a maneuver.
Now Middle Eastern defense officials say the Houthis have plans in the works to fire missiles into Riyadh, home to some 5.7 million people and site of the largest international airport in Saudi Arabia.
On Thursday, as part of their push to retake the Yemeni central city of Marib and the country’s capital, Sanaa, the Saudi-led Arab coalition targeted insurgent positions in those areas. The latest bombardment came hours after the Houthis’ Al-Masirah television aired footage touted as proof that the rebels captured several Saudi troops, including one man who identified himself as being part of a Saudi brigade.
The Associated Press reported from Marib that military vehicles from the United Arab Emirates, a key member of the coalition, “made their way Thursday along a two-lane road between Marib and a sprawling military base further east.”
“The influx of troops and hardware from the Emirates and other Gulf states appears to be adding momentum to the fight to retake territory,” the AP reported

Son of the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, has been killed in the Yemeni revolutionary forces’ attack in Ma’rib province, informed sources announced, rejecting claims that Sheikh Rashid has died of heart attack.
“Sheikh Rashid and a number of other UAE forces were killed in a Yemeni forces’ Katyusha attack in Ma’rib province and reports on his death as a result of a heart attack are only aimed at deceiving the Emirati people who are demanding withdrawal of the UAE troops from Yemen,” the Yemeni Press quoted informed sources as saying on Sunday.
The UAE news websites had claimed that Sheikh Rashid had died of a heart attack.
The Arab-language al-Ain news website, meantime, quoted people close to Ansarullah as confirming that Sheikh Rashid has been killed in Ma’rib.
Sheikh Rashid was the eldest son of Sheikh Mohammed. Rashid’s brother Sheikh Hamdan is the Crown Prince of Dubai.
A Saudi-led coalition force has been striking Yemen for 180 days now to restore power to Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 6,106 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.
Hadi stepped down in January and refused to reconsider the decision despite calls by Ansarullah revolutionaries of the Houthi movement.
Despite Riyadh’s claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

The British polling organization ORB International, an affiliate of WIN/Gallup International, repeatedly finds in Syria that, throughout the country, Syrians oppose ISIS by about 80%, and (in the latest such poll) also finds that 82% of Syrians blame the U.S. for ISIS.
TheWashington Postsummarized on September 15th the latest poll. They did not headline it with the poll’s anti-U.S. finding, such as “82% of Syrians Blame U.S. for ISIS.” That would have been newsworthy. Instead, their report’s headline was “ One in five Syrians say Islamic State is a good thing, poll says .”However, the accompanying graphic wasn’t focused on the few Syrians who support ISIS (and, at only one in five, that’s obviously not much.) It instead (for anyone who would read beyond that so-what headline) provided a summary of what Syrians actually do support. This is is what their graphic highlighted from the poll’s findings:
82% agree “IS [Islamic State] is US and foreign made group.”
79% agree “Foreign fighters made war worse.”
70% agree “Oppose division of country.”
65% agree “Syrians can live together again.”
64% agree “Diplomatic solution possible.”
57% agree “Situation is worsening.”
51% agree “Political solution best answer.”
49% agree “Oppose US coalition air strikes.”
22% agree “IS is a positive influence.”
21% agree “Prefer life now than under Assad.”
Hereare the more detailed findings in this poll, a poll that was taken of 1,365 Syrians from all 14 governates within Syria.
The finding that 22% agree that “IS is a positive influence” means that 78% do not agree with that statement. Since 82% do agree that “IS is US and foreign made group,” Syrians are clearly anti-American, by overwhelming majorities: they blame the U.S. for something that they clearly (by 78%) consider to benot“a positive influence.”
Hereis the unfortunately amateurish (even undated) press release from ORB International, reporting their findings, and it links directly to the full pdf of their poll-results, “ Syria Public Opinion – July 2015 ”. Though their press-operation is amateurish, their polling itself definitely is not. WIN/Gallup is, instead, the best polling-operation that functions in Syria, which is obviously an extremely difficult environment.
WIN/Gallupand ORB Internationalhad previously released a poll of Syria, on 8 July 2014, which reported that, at that time, “three in five (60%) of the population would support ‘international military involvement in Syria’. In government controlled regions this drops to 11% (Tartus), 36% (Damascus) and rises in those areas currently largely controlled by the opposition – Al Raqqah (82%), Aleppo (61%), Idlib (88%).” In other words: The regions that were controlled by Islamic jihadists (Sunnis who are backed by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United States) were, a year ago, overwhelmingly wanting “international military involvement in Syria.” They wanted to be saved from ISIS. Government-controlled regions didn’t feel the need for international involvement. Syrians were, apparently, at that time expecting “international military involvement” to beanti-jihadist, not pro-jihadist, as it turned out to be (which is the reason why the current poll is finding rampant anti-Americanism there).
This earlier poll further found that, “There is also evidence to suggest that Bashar al-Assad’s position is strengthened from a year ago.”
So, apparently, the more that the war has continued, the more opposed to the U.S. the Syrian people have become, and the more that they are supporting Bashar al-Assad, whom the Syrian people know that the U.S. is trying to bring down.

1. Israel Storms Mosque as Muslim World Sleeps
"The eighth-century mosque, which is the third holiest site in Islam, has been the site of three consecutive days of clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police. Palestinians fear that Israel is trying to gradually take control of the mosque compound, which Jews call the Temple Mount and Muslims call the Noble Sanctuary.
The area is holy to Jews because they believe it was the site of two ancient temples. Muslims believe it is the site where the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. Although there's been a ban on non-Muslim prayer at the compound for centuries, lately religious Jewish groups have made increased efforts to visit the area, always under heavy Israeli police protection.
Tensions have been especially high recently, after Israel's defense minister banned two Muslim groups from the site on September 8. Those Muslim groups -- the Murabitoun and the Murabitat -- say their mission is to protect the holy site from Jewish attempts to take it over.
"The Israelis are trying to establish a precedent by dividing Al-Aqsa Mosque compound into sections and time segments, so they can give Israeli settlers access to our mosque," Mourabitoun member Abdel Aziz al Abasi told Al Jazeera on Tuesday. "We will never agree to such plan because it is obvious that the Israelis are trying to take it over piecemeal."
2. Al Aqsa attack part of wider Israeli plot
The increasingly violent Israeli incursions at one the most revered holy sites for Muslims have accompanied the rise in recent years of so-called "Temple activism" groups.
These are organizations whose ultimate and clearly stated goal is the construction of a Jewish "Third Temple" to replace the currently existing structures that make up al-Aqsa mosque.
A 2013 report by the Israeli research organization Ir Amim noted that "the Jerusalem Municipality and other government ministries directly fund and support various activist organizations driven by the mission to rebuild the temple."
The Temple Institute, the leading extremist organization of its kind, has already formulated detailed blueprints for the new Jewish temple.
A leading figure in the Temple movement is Yehuda Glick, an American settler who was shot and injured by an unidentified gunman after he spoke last October at a conference titled "The Jewish people return to the Temple Mount."
3.'Israel's playing with fire' at Al-Aqsa Mosque
Turkey has again strongly condemned Israeli forces for storming occupied east Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
"Any attempt at breach and occupation [by Israel] at the Al-Aqsa Mosque is playing with fire. Israel is playing with fire now," presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told a press conference in Ankara on Tuesday.

Looks to me like the stage is being set for WW III where Book of Revelation and Albert Pike predicted.
