Nigerian government knew all along and didn't explore open engagement with the UK out of courtesy. The audacity of the UK high commissioner to seek for clarification over the re-arrest was a serious diplomatic flaw and it was no surprise that Malami over ruled them immediately in an undiplomatic manner.
