Guinness World Record: Obaseki supports Riemen Asein’s ‘marathon reading’ attempt with N10m

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has thrown his weight behind Miss Angel Riemen Asein, an indigene of Owan West Local Government Area of the State, as she attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon reading aloud by an individual.

Governor Obaseki made a N10million presentation to her foundation when she was presented to the Governor at the commissioning of the Cee-Jackson Apartment and the 73rd birthday celebration of the Chairman of Benin Port Project, Mr. Greg Ogbeifun, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

According to the 500 level undergraduate of Fishery and Aquatic Biology at the Lagos State university, her decision to embark on the world record attempt was to give support to ongoing efforts to eradicate prostitution and cultism in the State.

The read aloud marathon which is expected to last for 200 hours, would run for nine days, and is scheduled to take place at the State Library Complex, Secretariat Building, along Sapele Road, Benin City from February 23 to March 3, 2024.

Commending her efforts, Governor Obaseki noted, "We are here to identify with what Greg Obgeifun loves and we have decided to support this young girl, Angel Asein who represents what we are in Edo. Education is a tool needed to compete across the globe and to succeed in the future and we are making sure we provide such a platform for our people.”

He added, “I am passionate about this young girl who is trying to place Edo State in the Guinness Book of World Records by identifying with our own issues, telling the world our own stories, cleaning the distorted records, as she is trying to tell our own story to the world. I am giving you a present which is a donation to this young girl's foundation. I am donating the sum of N10 million.”

Congratulating the celebrant, Mr. Greg Ogbeifun, the governor prayed that God grants him long life in good health, noting, "We are celebrating him today because of what he represents to all of us. We have seen different aspects of him, his role as a father and brother in this family; his role as a community leader in this Community; his role with his Alma Mater; his role in his profession, and his activities in supporting different courses especially those that concern young people across the Country.

“I am proud of him as someone who, over the last seven years, has identified with us on the mission we are set out to achieve. That is, to take our legacy and inheritance, and reposition what we have inherited from our forebears and place us in a position to compete in today's world, now and in the future."

Obaseki added, “In the last seven years, we have tried to move Edo State from an ancient great city to a modern dynamic city. We are here to dedicate this property. We thank you for the work you have done for the State, especially the efforts put into the Benin Port Project.”

On his part, the celebrant who thanked God for good health, commended the governor and other guests for coming to felicitate with him.

Right now, A lot of things have been coming to my mind which are inappropriate. I've been struggling with academics since my financial status is so weak.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has thrown his weight behind Miss Angel Riemen Asein, an indigene of Owan West Local Government Area of the State, as she attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon reading aloud by an individual.

Governor Obaseki made a N10million presentation to her foundation when she was presented to the Governor at the commissioning of the Cee-Jackson Apartment and the 73rd birthday celebration of the Chairman of Benin Port Project, Mr. Greg Ogbeifun, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

According to the 500 level undergraduate of Fishery and Aquatic Biology at the Lagos State university, her decision to embark on the world record attempt was to give support to ongoing efforts to eradicate prostitution and cultism in the State.

The read aloud marathon which is expected to last for 200 hours, would run for nine days, and is scheduled to take place at the State Library Complex, Secretariat Building, along Sapele Road, Benin City from February 23 to March 3, 2024.

Commending her efforts, Governor Obaseki noted, "We are here to identify with what Greg Obgeifun loves and we have decided to support this young girl, Angel Asein who represents what we are in Edo. Education is a tool needed to compete across the globe and to succeed in the future and we are making sure we provide such a platform for our people.”

He added, “I am passionate about this young girl who is trying to place Edo State in the Guinness Book of World Records by identifying with our own issues, telling the world our own stories, cleaning the distorted records, as she is trying to tell our own story to the world. I am giving you a present which is a donation to this young girl's foundation. I am donating the sum of N10 million.”

Congratulating the celebrant, Mr. Greg Ogbeifun, the governor prayed that God grants him long life in good health, noting, "We are celebrating him today because of what he represents to all of us. We have seen different aspects of him, his role as a father and brother in this family; his role as a community leader in this Community; his role with his Alma Mater; his role in his profession, and his activities in supporting different courses especially those that concern young people across the Country.

“I am proud of him as someone who, over the last seven years, has identified with us on the mission we are set out to achieve. That is, to take our legacy and inheritance, and reposition what we have inherited from our forebears and place us in a position to compete in today's world, now and in the future."

Obaseki added, “In the last seven years, we have tried to move Edo State from an ancient great city to a modern dynamic city. We are here to dedicate this property. We thank you for the work you have done for the State, especially the efforts put into the Benin Port Project.”

The exceptionally brilliant Ernest Chukwuma was the centre of attraction during the sixth induction ceremony of the 161 newly qualified medical doctors of Afe Babalola university, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), held on February 9, where he emerged as the Best Graduating Medical Student.

Apart from emerging the overall best graduating medical student, Chukwuma recorded five distinctions in medical specialties: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, integrated medical courses and pathology.

His road to stardom started in 2019, midway into his MBBS programme, when he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree, D. Sc. and bagged a fellowship of the International Agency for Standards and Ratings for winning the 2019 Global Championship Award in Science through his research article titled “Theory of Photon Quanta” which was rated the best among 5,547 nominations and 87 screened for the 2019 World Championship in Science.

It was published in the Global Journal of Science Frontier Research: A Physics and Space Science Journal.

The Annual World Championship in Science Award is organised by the International Agency for Standards and Ratings for the Best Thesis and Dissertation Award, Doctoral Research Award and Milestone International Research Articles among brilliant Scientists and Academics around the world.

Chuckwuma’s award was announced thus: “…Your research article is the winner among 5,547 nominations from 87 screened for the World Championship 2019 in Science…The World Championship 2019 has international validity…The purpose of the award is to identify brilliant scientists and academicians around the world.”

Some of the previous winners of the championship include Dr. Xiaohui Song from the United States of America who was conferred with the World Championship in Material Science (Engineering Science) (2017) and Dr. Hiroshi Bando from Japan who was conferred in Endocrinology and Metabolism (2017), Dr. Ingo Schmidt from Germany, in Rheumatology (Metacarpophalangeal joints) 2018, Dr. Yasin Idweini from Jordan, in Urology (Electocoagulation) (2018) and Dr. Kenichi Meguro from Japan, in Geriatric Behavioral Neurology (2018).

According to the academic wizkid, his milestone achievement at a tender age in 2019 was fired by his great admiration for Albert Einstein, the great German physicist of all times who developed the theory of relativity, who he has been trying to emulate.


Said Chukwuma: “I had watched a movie about Albert Einstein, the great German Physicist, who invented the Einstein refrigerator. How he wanted his voice to be heard in his chosen field and how his voice was eventually heard. I too, want my voice to be heard. With these awards, my voice is being heard, but this is just the beginning. I believe that by the grace of God and of course more hard work, many awards are still on the way.”

Chukwuma who confessed after winning the award in 2019 that his best subject was Physics even though he was a medical student, recalled that the journey to stardom started from a question he asked in a Physics class but to which nobody could provide an answer. This got him thinking about how to get an answer and eventually, he got an answer to the riddle.

In his remarks, ABUAD founder and Chancellor, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, congratulated the Inductees for coming out in flying colours, stressing that their induction should not be seen as the end, but as the take-off points for them to attain greatness in their career, particularly as the world is expecting quality service from them.


His words: “I personally expect you to go higher academically and professionally. Never give up, dream high. Remember that it is not a crime to dream big, but it is a sin not to dream high. Your induction today should not be seen as the end, but the take-off points for you to attain greatness in your career”.

He added: “I am not unaware that the country is going through a difficult time having regard to insecurity, corruption, scarcity of money, fuel scarcity, unemployment, poor infrastructure, high rate of inflation, very poor foreign exchange rate, huge debt burden and the “japa” syndrome. I advise you not to be discouraged. Problems are bound to come. The world is a world of problems. It is only those who have the courage to confront these problems frontally and overcome them that are successful in life. You already have imbibed the culture of this university, therefore, you are already sufficiently armed to confront and overcome these problems”.

To the parents and guardians, he thanked them for choosing ABUAD for the education of their children/wards, a university with predictable academic calendar, a university devoid of strike actions and a university with its own Independent Power Plan (IPP), the only university with residential education among other distinguishing factors that stand ABUAD out.

He appealed to the parents not to lose control of their children/wards even though they are now Medical Doctors, adding that they should continue to monitor and mentor them so that they will continually appreciate the virtues of kindness, love, maturity and selflessness which the university has inculcated in them over the years.

He enjoined the parents and Nigerian leaders to emulate the virtues of appreciation, selflessness, and kindness in the developed countries where altruistic parents and Government institutions award scholarships, donate buildings, hostels and cash, institute professorial chairs in such universities in such world-class universities such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford among others.

He recalled, for example, that what the Alumni Association of Stanford university in the United States donate to the university annually is more than Nigeria’s annual budget for education and wondered why neither the 11,334 graduates including 619 Medical Doctors the university has produced since its maiden convocation on Sunday, October 21, 2013, nor their parents had thought it fit to contribute in any way to the university.

He told the inductees that the university will soon put up a museum that will contain, among other things, a hall of fame where the names of students and their sets will be emblazoned. In addition, the hall will contain the names of those who distinguished themselves in their callings and those who contribute to their alma mater.

Wishing them well in their career, Babalola said he is looking forward to seeing the names of many of them in that Hall of Fame in the nearest future, in addition to picking the baton of the Nobel Prize from where Prof. Wole Soyinka left it in 1986.

Commenting on his latest feat of emerging the best graduating student out of the newly inducted 161 brand-new medical doctors, Chukwuma had this to say: “I am very happy. Words are not enough to express my delight following my emergence as the best graduating student. I thank God Almighty for making this possible. I’m grateful to the university for finding me worthy to receive this award.”

He added: “I’m also grateful to the university for shaping me to be the man I am today. I am especially grateful to the founder, Aare Afe Babalola. He has been a great source of inspiration and drive for me. I thank my wonderful friends and family for their incredible support along the way.”

According to the 500 level undergraduate of Fishery and Aquatic Biology at the Lagos State university, her decision to embark on the world record attempt was to give support to ongoing efforts to eradicate prostitution and cultism in the State.

The read aloud marathon which is expected to last for 200 hours, would run for nine days, and is scheduled to take place at the State Library Complex, Secretariat Building, along Sapele Road, Benin City from February 23 to March 3, 2024.

Commending her efforts, Governor Obaseki noted, "We are here to identify with what Greg Obgeifun loves and we have decided to support this young girl, Angel Asein who represents what we are in Edo. Education is a tool needed to compete across the globe and to succeed in the future and we are making sure we provide such a platform for our people.”

An incident happened to me recently which made me want to question 'My First Love'.
Preamble: I am a Christian.( Saying 'born again Christian', to me, is an aberration. That's a story for another day).

During my undergraduate days there was this lady we always studied together. Because she was in a sister department to mine, we shared a lot of courses together. She comes around 3 to 4 times a week and both of us indoor. Most hostel mates thought we were dating. This is a lady I will rate 12/10. Her shape is unbelievable, her beauty is celestial and to add to that, she was one of the top five in her class. What baffles me this present day is why I never had any sexual attraction towards her despite having all the liberty.

Fast forward to this year. I had to relocate to a state down start for job reasons and ended up getting an apartment same day with this 'indomie generation' lady.

After I packed in, I invited my family over to spend some time with me. Few days after they left, the lady in question came knocking asking if she could iron her clothes as she had exhausted her prepaid unit. I allowed, based on the fact that I have received similar favours when I was her age. The second time she came visiting around 7 p.m, she came up with the excuse that she had flitted her room and she just wanted to stay for some time so the insecticide would fizzle out. And it 8 p.m, and 9 p.m, 'hello, come and be going the insecticide must have reduced to the barest minimum', she said she'll stay some more time. It was then I started smelling fish. The next statement she made was 'I'm here to sleep over', I was like 'sorry, I didn't get that '. It was when I took a second look at her that I saw she didn't wear bra, maybe she didn't where pant set. It this point my body became 'crazy aroused'. She saw the hardon and touched my p*nis, saying I should insert. Then it became a serious matter. To cut the long story short God helped me and I was able to get rid of her. And in bits, I was able to severe contacts with her completely.

From these two instances, I feel like I wasn't fired up like I used to in my university days and need to seek God's face to re-ignite my first love. If it was my younger days, I wouldn't have had such arous*l. Another contributory factor I assume could be the explicit skits that are all over the social media, those skits are subconsciously planting sensual contents into our minds.

In 1992, he moved to Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) where he spent over 10 years working in various capacities such as corporate banking, institutional banking and treasury. He rose to become the executive director in charge of institutional banking and was instrumental in developing GTBank's public sector business.

In 2002, he left GTBank along with his business partner and friend, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, to acquire a stake in Access Bank plc, which was then a small commercial bank ranked 65th out of 89 banks in Nigeria. They embarked on an ambitious transformation agenda that saw Access Bank grow from a regional bank with less than 10 branches to a global bank with over 600 branches across Nigeria, Africa and the UK.

Under their leadership, Access Bank became one of the most profitable banks in Nigeria and Africa, with a strong focus on innovation, customer service, corporate governance and social responsibility. They also led several landmark transactions such as the acquisition of Intercontinental Bank in 2012, which made Access Bank the fourth largest bank in Nigeria; the merger with Diamond Bank in 2019, which created the largest retail bank in Africa; and the listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2019, which enhanced Access Bank's international profile and access to capital.

Herbert Wigwe succeeded Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede as the Group Managing Director/CEO of Access Bank plc in January 2014 and continued to steer the bank to greater heights until April 2022 when he stepped down to become the CEO of Access Holdings Plc, a new entity that was created to oversee the non-banking businesses of Access Bank such as insurance, asset management, payments and digital banking.

He remained a non-executive director of Access Bank plc until his death. He also served as the chairman or board member of several other companies and organizations such as Access Bank (UK) Ltd, Access Investment & Securities Ltd, Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS), Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company (NMRC), FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange, Shared Agents Network Expansion Facilities Ltd (SANEF), Agri-Business/ SME Enterprises Investment Scheme (AGSMEIS) and Friends Africa.

He received numerous awards and honors such as African Banker of the Year (2016), BusinessDay CEO of the Year (2017), Forbes Best of Africa Award (2020), African Leadership Magazine African Business Leader Award (2020) and Leadership Newspaper Business Person of the Year (2020).

He was also passionate about giving back to society and supporting various causes such as education, health, entrepreneurship, women empowerment and environmental sustainability.
