Travel / Advice Needed On Making A Decision by Necksonnel: 8:47am On Mar 25
I got 2 admission into some Canada college early this year but one is already gone because I didn’t pay the deposit, remaining a post secondary certificate med lab assistant course but after the admission the school increased there tuition to from 14k to about 19k cad. It become very expensive also coupled the the naira depreciation. I only have 10M saved for traveling. Since this won’t be enough anymore, am thinking of forgoing the admission also and also the Japa dream for now.

I’m 29years with a first degree in biochemistry. I’m thinking I should go back to school for a pharmacy course maybe a private university here in Nigeria, maybe I can try and sponsor myself with the saved amount OR

I recently started a data analytic course online and it’s great but worried about the future for it because this decision is probably going to decide what I will do for the rest of my life. Don’t really know what the future hold by learning this and if it would be worth the energy because the industry looks like it’s getting over populated just like other tech industries.
So am currently confused in what decision to make
Is there hope for japa plan? I just don’t want to japa atleast with a purpose and I can get job with whatever I study there
Or going back to school
Or full focus on online data analytic courses with hope of a better future

A young Nigerian lady named Uche Chinonye Courage has graduated from the Abia State university, Nigeria after studying for 9 straight years switching courses.

Miss Chinonye graduated from the university’s College of Medicine after 9 years instead of the normal academic timeline of 6 years due to several challenges.

Chinonye took to her social media to celebrate her achievement, sharing the reason for the delay being challenges of dropping out to restart all over again.

She also mentioned that she faced physical and emotional challenges on her journey to becoming a graduate.

Congratulations dear and to every other person graduating from different institutions across Nigeria.
Welcome to the real world...

READ HER POST;
"#SUMMARY #OF MY #9YEARS JOURNEY IN ABSU.

My Academic journey started in 2015 at Abia State university Uturu..
I had passion for Medicine and Surgery , and applied for it but was admitted to study Optometry.
I had to apply for a change of course in order to fulfill my dreams not knowing it was going to be the beginning of my problems..
It was successful and I was happy but something happened in my 2nd year..

One fateful day, a memo was brought out during the accreditation process that all students that did change of course should return back to their initial department.
I almost collapsed on seeing that memo..
This affected over 50 students then😭..
We pleaded but to no avail.

The trauma and shock was too much to bear and most times landed me in the hospital in several occasions..
I had no option than to go back to Optometry to plead for acceptance which followed a condition that we must repeat 200 level .
I faced so much rejection and lost contact with friends because everyone was just looking at me like a failure without understanding the reason behind my predicament..

People say name has an impact and speaks for them that was exactly my case.
While studying and repeating class in Optometry, I picked JAMB form and wrote Post UTME but my Post UTME result got missing that year.

My aunt encouraged me again to pick another JAMB form in 2018 which I did prayerfully and this time God directed me to apply for Nursing.
I had to call on God this particular year with a broken heart Omega Power Ministry (O.P.M)
When the results were out I scored 256 in JAMB and 76 in Post UTME.
Remember all these processes were going on while studying Optometry..

I was admitted on merit to study Nursing in October 2018.
I started my Nursing Journey officially and God was with me all through that journey..

Fast forward to 2022,I wrote my Nursing council exams in November and passed at one sitting and became a Registered nurse (RN) in 2022 of which I shared the story on this platform.

Let’s complete the story now ..
In 2023 ,I wrote another Council exam and I passed at one sitting and became a Registered Public Health Nurse.
I also wrote other certificate exams of which I was successful in all.

In 2024 ,March precisely I sat for my Midwifery Council exam and became a Registered Midwife.

I concluded my degree exams for the Bachealor of Nursing Science (BNSc) on 21st March 2024..
God was on my side all through my journey in Nursing Science from 100 level to 500 level.
This is exactly 9years in Absu and I can attest to you that the Lord was on my side despite all the challenges..

In life with courage and determination you can achieve your dreams..
There were days I broke down in tears out of academic pressure but I still braced up and fought hard till today and I can only smile and look back to the days I cried ..
Indeed the lord is my Ebenezer(helper).
Courage is a global name.

I want to thank my mum and dad specially for all the sacrifices and prayers.
I also want to thank my aunt (Chidinma Nnanta). She gave me money for my Jamb form and pulled me out from Optometry.
I also want to thank my Elder brother(Uchenna) and immediate elder brother for all the financial support ..
You are the best brothers I could have asked for..
To my lovely husband Venn John
God bless you so much..
You came into my life at the very point I needed a comforter..
The prayers and the financial support was so overwhelming..
Thank you for believing in me and pushing me to be the best..

To my spiritual father in Anchodif( Ven Ugochukwu
Thank you very much daddy.
To all my spiritual fathers all over the world thank you for your prayers..
God bless my Opm family ,SPI ,Anglican family and many others who contributed to my success..

To my Lecturers in Nursing department Absu.
Thank you so much for impacting knowledge and discipline in me..

Let me officially reintroduce myself to you..

Education / Greenfield University: Producing Talented Graduates For Societal Development by Wasa005: 10:51am On Mar 23
The Nigerian landscape is currently dotted with numerous universities both public and private. But the private owned universities are springing up rapidly across all the geopolitical zones in the country. The government, acknowledging the growing demand of quality education, sensibly approved these universities owned and run by private individuals to complement its efforts of providing quality education to its people. Among these private universities is Greenfield university, the first private university in Kaduna State. The promoters and owners of this versatile university have a credible history spanning over twenty years of delivering good quality education at Nursery, Primary and secondary levels from inception. So its venture into the university system was a welcome initiative across the Nigerian education space. The outstanding feature of the university is the location of the school in the northern part of the country as envisioned by the promoters under the chairmanship of Chief Simon Nwakacha an engineer of repute who despite his roots of being an easterner patriotically went ahead and sited the university in the north without prejudice.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the commencement of establishing the university in December, 2013 after assurance from the promoters of their full commitment to develop a unique university that will be a model of excellence and a reference for other universities in the country in terms of knowledge and service delivery. The approved and licensed Greenfield university commenced its academic activities in June 2019. And more than ten years after the promoters declared their intention to the National Universities Commission in 2013 to establish the university the institution has stood boldly and uniquely on its promise despite the challenges over the years.

His Royal Highness the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Nuhu Ahmed Bamalli who is also the Chancellor of Greenfield university recently while commissioning the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences of the school rightly summed it up when he said.

‘’ We’ve four universities in Kaduna and the mother of all, we have ABU in Zaria. I cannot say we have enough, but with the population in Kaduna, it is not enough to cater for demands. With Greenfield in the Kaduna metropolis, more students will gain, from what we have seen; you have most of the required faculties. I believe in a couple of years, we should be seeing the university as a leader of private universities in the North. Our doors are always open, it is a technology-driven university, keep it up’’

No doubt that Greenfield university since its establishment has proved itself among other private universities in the country with exceptional quality teachings from its various accredited courses. Most of these courses are adaptable globally. Among the array of courses the university offers are Cyber Security, Civil Engineering, Criminology and Security Studies, Economics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering , Industry Chemistry , Finance and Investment Management, Information Technology, Political Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering and Physics with Electronics among others.

Located at Kudenda in a serene environment amidst beautiful greenish setting as its name implies the Greenfield university has not shifted its focus on the establishment of a unique university which will be highly sort after and a reference point within tertiary education and a core focus of providing graduates with various internationally recognised qualifications, skills and exposures tailored to the development of humanity. It has within a short term laid a strong foundation that ensures that its staff, students and graduates are well equipped and more reputable than their peers from other universities. This is not surprising given the fact that the vision of the university was founded on the quest for excellence by producing knowledgeable, talented and enviable graduates who can positively contribute to societal development. Its mission also evidently defined their focus to create an academic physically, technically, socially with a morally robust system driven to produced knowledgeable students as critical thinkers in different fields of study and also support students to achieve their personal goals and ambitions for their future in order to give them self-fulfillment, self –respect and self-confidence and also produce leaders with the knowledge and ability to reposition Nigeria among other great nations.
It was in recognition of the excellence provided by the university and its management that spurred the National Association of Northern Nigerian Students to bestow an Award of Excellence on the founder Engineer Simon Nwakacha. The award ‘’ Epitome of Educational Development’’ was in recognition of his laudable contribution to educational development of the country. The President of National Association of Northern Nigerian Students, Abdulrahman Ibrahim in an interview with newsmen, said that it is the tradition of the association to search for those that give to society, especially in education development to award them. “The award is meant to encourage him to do more. Being someone from Anambra State and he decided to establish a university in the North, it shows he is a patriotic Nigerian,” he said.

In his remarks at the well attended ceremony, Benjamin Danjuma Barde, Yeriman Gbagyi, a traditional leader said that the award was well deserved. “When I received the invitation for this award, I said it was not a mistake. As a representative of the community, we know he has done so much for the community in many regards, as well as scholarship. You are a blessing to the Gbagyi Chiefdom. This is just the beginning, more awards will come. ‘’ He said.

Reacting to the award Engineer Simon Nwakacha expressed his joy and swiftly dedicated the award to the students of the institution who lost their lives during an unfortunate kidnapping at the main campus. “This award is dedicated to all those who lost their lives in the struggle, the present students, Imperial students, in fact, the whole world,” he said.

According to the Pro-Chancellor while fielding questions from newsmen, he said he feels great because the award was presented by students of educational institutions in Nigeria and would spur him on to doing more. “There is a lot of work to be done to ensure a brighter future. We would continue to do our best,”

He then called on the government to through its intervention agencies support private institutions to ensure that Nigerian students excel in all ramifications. “I am saying that the government itself has been saying that they cannot do it alone, they need people to come and assist them so they should support private universities. During the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, only private universities sustained education. Government is pumping much funding into public universities. The same should be done for private universities, it's necessary they fund both private and public universities. Even in advanced countries, the government was giving palliatives to Harvard and others. Its better government takes all along not necessarily equally, but it should be inclusive,” he appealed.

Engineer Nwakacha also recently awarded scholarships to two best graduating pupils (a male and a female) of Makarfi Central Primary school for their Secondary education at Imperial School Kaduna from JSS1 to SSS 3. He said the gesture was from his family to the two best graduating pupils. He revealed that the scholarship would be effective from the next academic session (2023/2024) on the occasion of the centenary anniversary of Makarfi Central Primary school. The Imperial School also owned by the pro-chancellor is a premier boarding primary and secondary school he founded in 1997 as part of his contribution to the development of education in Northern Nigeria.

Engineer Simon Nwakacha’s scholarship scheme cut across boundaries. The Pro-Chancellor who holds the traditional title of Onwa Umueri generously extended an amazing full scholarship to individuals from Umueri in Anambra State who are keen on pursuing their education at Greenfield university. The President General of Umueri Oke-Ebo, Dr Johnny Metchie, announced this generous gesture at the second Umueri General Assembly where he expressed his deepest appreciation on behalf of the people of Umueri.

‘’ I am extremely delighted to announce that the founder and Pro-chancellor of the esteemed Greenfield university, Engr. Chief Simon Nwakacha (Onwa Umueri) is extending an amazing full scholarship opportunity to individuals from Umueri who are keen on pursuing a degree program in the university. Dear Sir, please accept my deepest appreciation for this benevolent opportunity you have graciously extended to the community. Your generosity has filled our hearts with immense gratitude. Your commitment to education and empowerment is a beacon of inspiration for us all. On behalf of the entire Umueri community, we extend our profound thankfulness for your unwavering support and belief in the potential of our people. Your generosity will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the lives of those who seize this golden opportunity.’’ He said.

The President General then encouraged and implored the people of Umueri to embrace this rare deed with purposeful determination. ‘’ I would like to take this opportunity to encourage and implore the people of Umueri to embrace this rare deed with purposeful determination. The chance to pursue a higher education in such a distinguished institution is a unique privilege that should not be overlooked. Let us unite in seize this moment to invest in our future, empower our youth and contribute to the growth and prosperity of our community.’’ He advised.

At the moment given its past experience Greenfield university has put in place appropriate security measures to ensure the protection of the lives and property of its students and staff against incident of banditry. The university management further cautioned the students against posting sensitive information about the school on social media and to be security conscious.

Speaking to the students during the matriculation of the 4th set of the university’s students, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Simon Daniel Katung, told students to be security conscious and avoid a late return to the campus hostel. He assured parents present at the occasion that Greenfield university is committed to producing graduates that will compete favourably with their peers globally; the Vice Chancellor warned that the university will not tolerate cultism amongst its students.

According to Professor Katung, “The university will continue to work round the clock to ensure the security of lives and properties of our students. However, students are expected to be security conscious throughout their stay at the university. Students are advised to always be in the hostel early because staying out late would not be condoned by the security personnel. Given the fact that the use of Social Media is in vogue in our society today, you are advised to use it for only positive things that will add value to your stay in the university. The university does not permit the activities of any antisocial groups operating on the campus. In particular, membership in cult groups is prohibited and offenders will be summarily expelled. Students are expected to exhibit a high sense of discipline while in the university. The university will not award its degree to students who are found wanting in character and in learning,” the Vice Chancellor warned.

He, however, pointed out that the university has made adequate arrangements for both academic and social facilities like a well-equipped library, Digital Resource Centre, as well as sporting facilities for students and staff’s academic excellence and physical fitness.

Some of the parents at the occasion expressed satisfaction with the facilities at the university’s campus and expressed confidence that the university will do its best in training their children. No doubt that Greenfield university is universally set to train and bring out the best brains that would be epitome of success by producing knowledgeable, talented and enviable graduates who can positively contribute to societal development.

Travel / Germany To Allow International Students Work For 9 Months Prior To Studies by nlfpmod: 2:48pm On Mar 22
Germany recently enacted the second part of its new skilled worker law, which introduces fresh regulations such as allowing international students with student visas to work 9 months prior to their studies.

Nairmetrics learnt that the country recently put into effect this second segment of its revamped skilled worker law, following the initial enactment in November 2023.

The government aims to attract skilled workers from various industries and is doing so through its international student visa route by relaxing regulations.

Here are some of the changes to be aware of:

Work opportunities before the start of studies

Non-EU citizens can apply for the visa for study applications, allowing a stay of up to nine months while preparing a university application. During this period, applicants can undertake language courses, gather necessary documents, and acclimate to the country.

Crucially, prospective students from developing countries can now work up to 20 hours per week during these nine months to support themselves financially.

These changes benefit international students, including those who are yet to commence their careers, stand to benefit from the new regulations.

The new regulations facilitate the integration of work and study in Germany at all stages of higher education, even before admission.

Apprenticeships for non-EU nationals
Similar to university applicants, third-country nationals interested in apprenticeships in Germany can now work while searching for opportunities.

They are permitted to stay for nine months, provided they possess B1-level German proficiency and are below 35 years of age. During this period, they can engage in part-time work and continue working for 20 hours per week alongside their training once they secure an apprenticeship.

Increased work hours for international students
Under the new regulations, international students in Germany can now work more hours to support themselves financially.  The permitted time has been extended from 120 to 140 full days in any calendar year, equivalent to 20 hours per week, or 280 half days per calendar year.

Extended post-study stay
Graduates of German universities are now allowed an 18-month stay post-graduation for job hunting, with the option to apply for permanent residence after two years of employment.

As these rules remain unchanged, graduates seeking a career change now have an alternative visa pathway through the EU Blue Card or German Skilled Worker Visa.

Also, applicants with a degree or vocational qualification recognized by Germany can apply if they have two years of relevant work experience, even if it’s not in the same field or industry as their qualification.

Politics / Japa: UK Universities Battle Financial Shortage As Foreign Students From Nigeria by AmazingGenius: 7:28pm On Mar 17
Japa: UK universities battle financial shortage as foreign students from Nigeria, India reduce.

A number of the universities in the United Kingdom, UK, face bankruptcy as the numbers of international students from India and Nigeria – the most populous countries in Asia and Africa respectively – have declined.

This might not be unconnected with UK policy that bans foreign students from bringing their dependants (that is spouses and children).

In 2023, data revealed that India and Nigeria had the highest numbers of immigrants to the UK with 253,000 and 141,000 respectively.

With the policy in place, which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak-led government implemented to cut migration, it is understood that Indians and Nigerians are looking to other destinations that provide education and accommodation for their families.

Meanwhile, the UK’s policy is taking its toll on the universities as they deal with financial crises, according to The Times, disclosing that about 15 universities currently considering cutting jobs, and courses this academic year.

The report said many more have announced cost-saving plans that could lead to redundancies or courses being scrapped to save tens of millions.

Aside from the decrease in the number of non-research degrees students barred from bringing their families to the UK, the Home Secretary, James Cleverly also suggested that visas which allow students to work in Britain for two or three years after graduation should be scrapped.

Currently, students face fewer teaching staff, lower quality, and fewer options as universities struggle to reduce costs in response to a reduction in the number of wealthy foreign students.

university authorities have therefore warned of “really difficult” cuts, such as stopping entire courses and laying off academic staff, as a loss of one-third of international students threatens to put several institutions into the red.

Also, The Times disclosed that Nigeria’s economic crises might have caused a collapse in applications to UK universities while Indian students are also being deterred as the government cracks down on visas.

Tuition rates have effectively been unchanged for more than a decade, and with most colleges now losing money on domestic students, they have offset their losses with international students who pay significantly more.

Over the last four years, numbers have increased by 60%, reaching 560,000.

However, early acceptance data predicts a 37% decline in overseas admissions in the coming fiscal year.

Data from Nigeria will be down 71% after a sevenfold increase in enrolments in four years saw the country overtake the entire EU with 33,000 students at British universities.

Bankruptcy in UK universities

Speaking about the crisis, the Executive Secretary of the Committee of university Chairs, John Rushforth said, “I’ve been in higher education for 30 years and senior leaders are more worried than I’ve ever seen them…bankruptcy is a realistic possibility for some institutions and universities are having to do really difficult things to stave that off.

“Taking fewer British students is a last resort but if you’re making a loss on something people have to consider it. Everything has got to be looked at because the situation is so serious.

“Universities have to think hard about what they want to protect and make choices about divesting themselves of things that are not core to the institution. There will be less choice for students. A lot of institutions have introduced lots of modules so that students can pick and choose. That’s expensive, so it may be that you go back to more generic courses.  Fundamentally, either you have to increase income, or you reduce quality or volume.”

Universities to stop some courses

In the bid to discontinue some courses, humanities subjects and languages are bearing the weight of the losses.

The university of Kent has just disclosed plans to discontinue nine courses, including philosophy, contemporary languages, and comparative literature, while Aberdeen is scrapping single honors language degrees, and Winchester is discontinuing numerous humanities courses.

Oxford Brookes is dropping music and reducing its history department, while several other universities are planning unspecified cost cuts.

Impact of foreign students from Nigeria
Northumbria university, Newcastle is among those to have cited economic turmoil in Nigeria, whose currency has collapsed against the pound, for the need to make cuts in the face of a “very sudden reduction of the number of students” coming from the country.

A spokesman for Northumbria university said, “The university’s financial position was very strong but the current financial outlook is weaker than anticipated.”

“This is a consequence of a combination of fixed home undergraduate fees, difficulties around recruitment of international students, and the ongoing impact of inflation.”

Corroborating the submission, Rachel Hewitt, chief executive of MillionPlus, the group for newer universities, said, “The economic crisis in Nigeria presents difficulties for any university seeking to recruit from that country.

"The existing tuition fee model coupled with high inflation has seen their income fall year on year, meaning institutions have to make difficult choices and do more with less.”

According to the report from The Times, she also blamed ministers, saying, “It is impossible to imagine the government going out of its way to make Britain less inviting to investment in almost any other sector and yet every negative headline and policy reform that makes Britain less attractive to international students damages both the higher education sector and UK plc.”

Travel / UK Universities Face Bankruptcy As Intl Student From Nigeria, India Declines by ednut1(m): 7:23pm On Mar 17
In the UK, there are about 15 universities currently considering cutting jobs, and courses this academic year.

According to The Times, many more have announced cost-saving plans that could lead to redundancies or courses being scrapped to save tens of millions.

This may not be unconnected to the UK government’s recent introduction of higher education reforms that will crack down on “rip-off” degrees and ensure student visas are used for education rather than immigration.

Also, overseas students who are not taking research degrees are now barred from bringing their families. In addition, James Cleverly, the home secretary, suggested scrapping visas that allow students to work in Britain for two or three years after graduation.

Scramble to cut costs
Currently, students face fewer teaching staff, lower quality, and fewer options as universities struggle to slash costs in response to a reduction in the number of wealthy international students.

university leaders have therefore warned of “really difficult” cuts, such as discontinuing entire courses and laying off academic staff, as a loss of one-third of international students threatens to put several institutions into the red.

Nigeria’s economic crises have led to a collapse in applications while Indian students are also being deterred as the the government cracks down on visas.

Universities say bankruptcies are a “realistic possibility” with one in ten already cutting staff this year.

Tuition rates have effectively been unchanged for more than a decade, and with most colleges now losing money on domestic students, they have offset their losses with international students who pay significantly more.

Over the last four years, numbers have increased by 60%, reaching 560,000.

However, early acceptance data predicts a 37% decrease in overseas recruits in the coming fiscal year. Data from Nigeria will be down 71% after a sevenfold increase in enrolments in four years saw the country overtake the entire EU with 33,000 students at British universities.

Bankruptcy in UK universities
John Rushforth, executive secretary of the Committee of university Chairs, said:

“I’ve been in higher education for 30 years and senior leaders are more worried than I’ve ever seen them.”
“…bankruptcy is a realistic possibility for some institutions and universities are having to do really difficult things to stave that off.
“Fundamentally, either you have to increase income, or you reduce quality or volume.”
Universities to discontinue certain courses

Oxford Brookes is dropping music and reducing its history department, while several other universities are planning unspecified cost cuts.

Politics / UK Universities In Financial Turmoil After Foreign Students Decrease by Ruhamah2: 1:01pm On Mar 16
Universities consider firing staff and cutting courses as foreign student enrollments plummet.
Report finds at least 15 universities in the UK have announced job cuts.
Hundreds of university staff are facing the risk of being fired as educational institutions scramble to cut costs due to a substantial drop in the admission of foreign students.
university chiefs have warned of cuts, ranging from shutting down courses to shedding teaching staff, due to the institutions being pushed into deficit, The Times reported.
This academic year, at least 15 universities in the UK have announced job cuts and additional cost-saving measures to save finances.
Earlier in March, more than 120 staff at Sheffield Hallam university were served with "risk of redundancy" letters, which gave them until 18 March to apply for voluntary redundancy or one of a "limited number of roles". The university of Kent in February proposed to cut 58 jobs along with nine courses in an attempt to respond to "financial challenges".
Due to a freeze in tuition fees, most universities have covered their costs by enrolling overseas students, who pay far more than domestic students.
According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, overseas students comprised 24 per cent of all students in higher education during the 2021-2022 academic year. However, early acceptance data indicates a 37 per cent decrease in overseas recruits for the upcoming financial year.
Northumbria university said the cuts were necessitated due to "a sudden reduction of the number of students" arriving in the UK from Nigeria, where the currency has collapsed against the pound.
Acceptance data suggests there would be a 71 per cent reduction in the number of students arriving from Nigeria, The Times reported.
John Rushforth, executive secretary of the Committee of university Chairs, said: “I’ve been in higher education for 30 years and senior leaders are more worried than I’ve ever seen them.”
He told the newspaper that “bankruptcy is a realistic possibility” for some universities, which are being pushed to do “really difficult things” to stave that off.
“Taking fewer British students is a last resort but if you’re making a loss on something people have to consider it. Everything has got to be looked at because the situation is so serious,” he said.

“Universities have to think hard about what they want to protect and make choices about divesting themselves of things that are not core to the institution. There will be less choice for students. ...Fundamentally, either you have to increase income, or you reduce quality or volume.”
Last year, thousands of university and College Union (UCU) staff participated in a walkout to protest the “punitive” pay deductions imposed for engaging in a summer marking boycott
“I’ve not received full pay for five months for taking part in an entirely lawful boycott,” Tanzil Chowdhury, a senior lecturer in law at Queen Mary told the Independent.

Education / Navigating Study And Work: A Comprehensive Guide For International Students by Kishaimmigratio: 5:02pm On Mar 15
Studying in another country isn't just about learning; it's also an opportunity to experience the lifestyle and culture of a new place.

Not just that, many international students also use the opportunity to gain international work experience by finding a job or internship program to enhance their resume.

Whether you're into adventures or seeking work experience, you can work while studying with a student visa.

Let's explore the options for working and studying in the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, and Canada together.

Ways to Gain Work Experience as an International Student

Internships Available Through Your university

university career centers provide details about internships or work opportunities you can apply for, similar to regular jobs. These internships usually have specific rules about the number of hours international students are allowed to work.

Study and Gain Experience With a Co-Op Program

Some universities have programs where you can work and learn at the same time, called Co-Op. These internships last 6-12 months and let you get real-world experience while you're still in school. Co-op degrees often don't have strict work hour rules, but that can vary by country.

Choosing Work Placement courses

If your degree doesn't have a built-in internship, there could be other choices. Some universities provide courses where you work and study for a semester in a field related to your degree. Typically, these courses are open to students in their second year or later for undergraduates and to most postgraduate programs.

Choosing a Program that Suits Your Work and Study Goals

Remember that each country has its own rules and job options for students from other countries. If you plan to work while studying abroad, your visa will play a big role in what you can do. The details I'm about to share about working hours are just a basic overview. If you're curious about your possibilities in a specific place as an international student, there's a lot more to explore based on the rules there.

Working Hours for International Students in the UK

During Your Degree

While studying in the UK on a student visa, international students are allowed to work. During the university term, they can work up to 20 hours per week, and during holidays like semester breaks, they can work full-time. However, the job cannot be a permanent one, so students can only work part-time or casually. There are no restrictions on the types of places where they can work, but they cannot have a permanent position. You cannot:

• Be self-employed (such as a contractor or freelancer)

• Work permanently full-time (permanent part-time is allowed)

• Be an entertainer or sportsperson

Internships While Studying

If your degree program includes a mandatory work placement or internship, you can work full-time even if your visa doesn't normally allow employment. This exception only applies to internships or work placements that are part of your university course requirements, not those you find on your own.

After Graduation

Your job options in the UK after finishing your studies depend on your degree and field of study. If you have a Bachelor's or Master's degree, as an international student, you can work full-time for 2 years after graduating. If you have a PhD, this period extends to 3 years under a Graduate visa. There are also other work options like the Skilled Worker and Start-up routes, which are based on your skills and can last up to 5 years. It's important to note that many of these post-graduation routes don't contribute to getting permanent residency in the UK.

Working Hours for International Students in Ireland

During Your Degree

If you're an international student studying in Ireland, you can work part-time for up to 20 hours a week when classes are in session and up to 40 hours a week during the holidays. However, the government sets a specific time for these holidays, which applies to all international students, regardless of their school schedules. During this holiday period, which aligns with the usual breaks between semesters, you can only work up to 40 hours a week.

After Graduation

You can get a visa through the Third Level Graduate Program, which gives international students a 1 or 2-year visa to work up to 40 hours per week after finishing studies at an Irish university. It's important to know that this program counts towards the maximum 7-year study limit in Ireland.

Another option is if you get a job offer after graduating, you can apply for the General Employment Permit or Critical Skills Employment Permit, especially if your job is in a field where the Irish Government needs workers. For those doing research, there's a Research Hosting Agreement you can apply for to stay in Ireland after finishing your studies.

Working Hours for International Students in Canada

During Your Degree

If you're an international student working in Canada, the hours you can work depend on whether it's on-campus or off-campus. If you're working on campus, like at a café, bookstore, library, or as a tutor, there's no limit to how many hours you can work. You can also have another job off-campus if you want, but check your student visa to make sure it allows on-campus work.

If you work off-campus, which means at a place not on the university campus, you can work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session. During breaks, you can work full-time, but there's no specific limit set by the Canadian government on what's considered full-time during breaks. If you're self-employed as an international student in Canada, just make sure to keep records of your earnings to show that you're following the rules for off-campus work.

Only international students whose visa says they are eligible for off-campus employment are allowed to do so. Students only taking general interest courses or are only enrolled in an English or French as a second language program are not eligible to work off-campus.

After Graduation

After graduation, international students can apply for a Postgraduate Work Permit (PGWP). With this permit, they can stay in Canada and work after graduation. There are no limits on the number of hours they can work, and the duration of the PGWP depends on how long their study program is. It's important to note that only programs from specific universities and colleges called Designated Learning Institutions qualify for a PGWP, so it's crucial to check this before applying.

Work in Canada With a Co-Op Program

If you're an international student who wants to study and work in Canada, there's another choice called the International Experience Canada program. With this program, you can apply to stay in Canada for up to two years. You have two options: you can either join a Co-Op program or work in Canada after you graduate. Plus, you get an open work permit.

Working Hours for International Students in the US

During Your Degree

Regulations regarding working hours for international students in the US also depend on whether you are working on-campus or off-campus. During your first year of studying, you can only work on campus. But after that, you can also work off campus.

International students in the US can only work off-campus in specific situations. They need to apply separately and show that they are facing financial difficulties or other challenges that make it necessary for them to seek off-campus employment while studying. Another option is working off-campus if the job is related to their field of study, either through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). Both a school official and the US government must approve this.

The working hours for both on-campus and off-campus employment are up to 20 hours per week during the semester, and full-time during semester breaks.

After Graduation

If you're an international student studying in the US, you can apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training) after you graduate. OPT allows you to work in a job related to your field of study. But if you work during your studies, that time will be subtracted from the maximum OPT period you can get after graduation.

For non-STEM graduates, the OPT period is up to 1 year, while STEM graduates can get up to 3 years. There's no limit on the number of hours you can work, but you must work at least 20 hours per week to maintain your postgraduate OPT status.

Working Hours for International Students in Australia

During Your Degree

International students in Australia can work up to 48 hours every two weeks, and there is no limit during official university breaks. To work and study together, students must keep their student status and make progress in their courses. You can have different jobs and employers as long as you follow the hourly limits.

After Graduation

If you're an international student who finished a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree, you can apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485). The eligibility depends on your previous visa and the field of study:

• Post-Study Work Stream: 2-4 years granted to live and work in Australia after graduation

• Graduate Work Stream: up to 24 months granted to live and work in an in-demand occupation

• Second Post-Study Work Stream: a renewal of 1-2 years granted to students who graduated from an Australian university in a Regional Area.

Conclusion

This article is an overview of international student working hours.
