I am not in Europe, so I could not tell of those who call back home for assistance. Many of those around me here are the ones I speak of . . . done with the bull-$hit of the Nigerian mentality. This Christmas, I am so buying myself a huge gift, thanks to the money I saved by not sending more freebies to those in Nigeria who do not seem to care about the Nigerian situation enough to want to change it.

100,000 pounds a year is 26 million naira. Someone just said such salaries are difficult in naija but they can giving that to RGU grads really? Oil companies have that much money to spend?

Internationals pay the full fees not all cash down but don't forget that a lot of international students are from countries like europe and asia where you can get a loan from a bank to go to a school. No naija bank would lend you such a huge sum of money. So the large majority of internationals loan money from the banks in their country. If you don't have that option u will have to try cosigners or access loans if you have a credit history in america.

I meant the best b schools in europe are in continental europe not england. After maybe be london business school most b schools in the uk don't have strong placements because the mba is in general an american phenomenon. U are ok with a masters degree or even undergraduate degree in the UK. Also in the UK/europe there is a big market for PhDs in like consultancy/finance firms in the city relative to america so they tend to hire PhD people in graduate schemes. This is true for germany where they have a PhD glut. So these end up being the associates in firms instead of MBA.

In general though the US is the best to go for an MBA but the cost and visa issues are kind of a deterrent. There are also a lot of one year MBAs in europe which are attractive.

I dont intend to work in finance, business or make money. I intend to have an easy 9-5 job where I get the opportunity to chase women till I am 50. Sefag, easy on Ajanlekoko that's my main man,

Every one has different point of views and we can all agree to disagree.

Are you at Harvard ? How do you like it ? When do you graduate ?
I am just playing with him. I wanna see how angry he can get before he pushes me for a ban  grin. I really have no problem with his opinions. They are equally valid but some of them sound like bad belle sometimes sha. Like he seems he has been observing all the people who came back to Nigeria with an MBA and became average but for each failure I am sure there are decent success stories.
Even if they don't give you any grants/scholarships and all they offer is loans, I still think it is worth it.
They rarely loan money to foreign students because they need a US cosigner but there used to be an Access loan for international students.

A lot of the european business schools though would loan you the money straight-off regardless of your citizenship like ESADE, St Gallen e.t.c

So many scholarships for MBA out there, the main issue is being a top student with top grades and good work experience. You dont have to go to America or the UK (which has like only one really good MBA program anyways), the best programs are in continental Europe.

I had a friend who graduated from Wharton and was jobless for two years. Rather than network, he had spent all his time studying to keep up with his peers,  He ruined his credit because student loans companies want to collect their money and he had no money,  Once again just be wise!

Baruch has good contacts with the city and are a decent feeder for IB.

no mind them jare. you can attend all the Ivy leagues in America if u want. But if you don't have the personality, you still won't make valuable friends and contacts. It is all about the personality and crashing the right parties on the upper east side of Manhattan grin.
Exactly, its all about connections but schools like HBS open the doors for you to interact with such people and gives you the confidence to build them. Yes some people dont use  alumni network (I dont, I am not really social) but I have seen people use them and it works wonders. There is a feeling of camaraderie which American schools foster on their students (largely absent in other countries) and generally if you forward your CV to an alumni you are guaranteed a look. If say you apply to an MBB firm and you know someone who can refer you, you will have better chances of getting an interview. I have a friend who uses alumni network decently well because he is a bit more confident than I am and it worked wonders for him.

Cornell, Emory, Michigan, UMD - College Park, U of Austin - Texas, Rice, Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester, Imperial, Edinburgh, IMD, IESE, U Toronto, Queens University, McGill, University of Capetown etc that have MBA programs. Everybody has a potential for greatness, and so it will be wrong to assume that you're gonna nail "that" only at schools such as Yale, Harvard, and the rest of the so called elite institutions. Don't forget that rankings are biased.
And they also give scholarships (The American ones) and some of the European ones. Its just that its the asians getting the scholarship not Africans because most have the same mindset as Ajanlekoko  grin. Sit down, be mediocre till I am in my 30s and then figure out my life later  grin

HBS is a waste of time and money for Nigerians, especially if what you're looking for is a job in Nigeria

Do you honestly think Nigerian companies can pay HBS MBA salaries?

It's like going to the RADA just to get into Nollywood
I did. That statement is not really true, and his second qualification is not either. Infact its the main reason I stuck in the thread, I had this discussion with a friend like day ago so it was coincidental this came up. He was asking me the point of such an MBA if your major gain is (networking) is useless in Nigeria when you can network more at Lagos Business school. I pointed out that might be true but lets put this in context- if you get into HBS its likely you have strong work experience, its very likely you have a gameplan and a reason for going there. Its not a waste for these individuals. It means there is a lot you can do with the brand. the average salary out of an MBA is 100K, I bet a lot of Nigerian companies can pay that (Sebi i dey read Nairaland). How do all of you build your houses in Lekki, VI et al. by mortgage?

What about multinationals and their extensions (Mckinsey is in Nigeria, some foreign private equity firms)- you think they will not be able to pay a good salary? Oil companies? kini big deal about 12-14 million Naira a year.

SEFAGO is talking from the Yankee Student perspective.
LOL keep making yourself happy with google grin.

An MBA is not seen as academic and no one does an MBA for the classes or really to learn anything of value. Its name branding and people know that when go and do an MBA. I still never understand why people keep on bring up the class content issue like its rocket science.

I meant those executive education programs do not get you recruited for anything neither are they a major addition in your CV. The MBA brand is what makes Harvard business School elite and the executive education is just a money spinner for them for people gullible enough to pay for them.

IMHO, HBS is a waste of time and money for Nigerians, especially if what you're looking for is a job in Nigeria. If you intend to get 'top-rated' experience internationally, well, sure if you have the money or the funding. If not, I'm sure there are equally sound, much cheaper, if less prestigious, programs around. One size can't possibly fit all.
Enjoy your ignorance and lack of exposure. Ignorance is indeed bliss.

Remember that most academic programs are crammed with tons of useless information anyways.
And for chrissake no respectable person really considers an MBA an "academic" program. I dont blame you sha for your disdain for education.

The people you listed below are just lazy people and exception to the rules it does not mean that they are the general case of nigerians who go to HBS or CBS.

Harvard rarely offers MSc (MS in the states)

Loads of top MBAs give financial aid to the academically capable especially from underrepresented regions like Africa

If you are not young (Like in your 20s or early 30s) it would not be easy to get an associate position in a BB. Harvard or not these people tend to be more willing to hire a young crowd except maybe you had prior experience in IB as an analyst (this is what i heard from family friends who did an MBA at top ten school s but ended up coming back to nigeria). They pointed out that most of the people being headhunted for those positions where the younger folks.

Why? I was planning on doing a year in europe too and then coming back to the us for phd. may be that's a bad idea too, but I just didn't want to go directly into a phd program. I feel like I should take a break for a year or something. Anyway, i was planning on just contacting professors randomly and just packing up and going somewhere for a year.
I did the same thing- and trust me its a refreshing experience- the US gets monotonous and while I would personally encourage you to do this, like my experience was not great because of finances (I am not from a rich family grin). If you get a job though and stuff like that definitely go for it but you also gotta consider like Visa issues and stuff. Can give you more specifics elsewhere. Start contacting professors early though and also you have to consider like if they can pay you to work in their labs or something- it seem like a great idea in theory but in practise might not be all that good.

Are you still in grad school? How is that going. I am bent on the grad school route right now. anyway, let me know where to contact you. I need serious advice.
Yeah I am for now hehe, If I dont drop out/Fail out grin grin grin, you can send an email to graduatenaijahelp@gmail.com then I will redirect you to a better/real email address or add you on chat or something. Yeah I will be happy to give you advise- seems you are in the same situation I was in when I just graduated and I was a bit idealistic like you like going abroad for a year which I did and which was a great experience dont get me wrong but yeah send me an email.

I took one art history class sophomore year and my final project was art in Italy. I have wanted to check out the history and architecture. If I go there, it'll be for a year and I will be working on the kind of stuff am interested in. There just won't be a lot of money.

Anyway, are you applying this year too?

Those are not my GRE scores BTW, even though mine is pretty similar, I think the scores are hassan's.

Anyway, I looked at KAUST, it seems like they have a lot of money, but isn't anyone concerned about the location? I mean foreigners aren't exempted from their laws right?  Seems like a pretty good school though. Anyone you know there,  what is it like?
Flo_path lol you sound a bit like me, I think we should talk off Nairaland for several reasons--- I lived in Europe for a year b4 starting grad school at one of the Harvard/Yale/Princeton/ MIT/Stanford schools. Biggest mistake I have ever made in my life. But its quite possible, trust me, I randomly contacted professors from Universities all over the world and I got research positions in EPFL, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin, Oxford, St Andrews and a bunch of other UK universities- but funding was also a major issue though and some of them wanted me to even pay for my housing.

I personally think you should stay in America and dont waste time on places like Oxbridge or Imperial- apart from the fact that they are three years, I do not think that they can match top 15 US universities in terms of facilities or quality. The quality of UK PhDs is heavily dependent on the student, with some good students completing excellent PhDs while the large majority might not because its just three years and some people spend a whole year figuring out what to do and two years doing it. America is not that different but the Generals/Qualification exams you have to sit and the fact that you are required to publish a certain number of papers forces you to get a good quality PhD. Anyways I dont have time to type because I am very busy but if you are interested in talking further let me know.

I dont think MIT/Caltech/Stanford are necessarily reaches- Berkeley might as an International student.

I agree that he or she needs to do more research before going forward with the move, and I agree with your second statement that there may be opportunities in examining lesser known schools in detail, but I doubt if hiring managers who may be fraught with responsibilities of sifting through 12,000 applications for 50 roles think of it this way, when they could easily just filter for Oxford or Cambridge. In the end, these schools are what those companies sell most to their clients. A sales person from Goldman sachs is more likely to win the wealth management business of a new prospect by telling him that his funds will be managed by "Cambridge grads" than "guys from Queens, Canada".
You are talking about recruiting in the UK and no one is comparing Queens to oxbridge. Point is that you can maximize your chances of getting a good job by going to queens than most universities in the UK. Most people from Oxbridge will not be able to get entry-level jobs in the US too because of the way recruitment is set-up (Heavily based on on-campus resume drop where you get physically interviewed on campus) does not mean much really. A lot of financial institutions and consultancies have offices in Canada, and the students from the best business school in Canada get access to these first before Ivy league students from North America and Oxbridge:

http://business.queensu.ca/ConversionDocs/commerce_annual_report.pdf

http://business.queensu.ca/ConversionDocs/MBA_annual_report.pdf

Some of the companies there like Mckinsey recruit heavily in the UK from like 4 universities (Oxbridge,Imperial,LSE) and in the US from like 12-15 (Ivy, Northwestern, Berkeley et al.) but would focus on recruiting for their Canadian office solely on Canadian universities.

Its all about finding the easiest and cheapest way of getting a good job. Most Nigerians just focus on what they are familiar with US/UK when you can seek other opportunities elsewhere. Apart from the language barrier/maybe discrimination for jobs and maybe a lack of recognition in naija- I still think this is a cost effective strategy. I have found a lot of Africans (Francophone Africans) who attended the grande ecoles for undergrad or masters and have jobs in top companies in the new york and london.

So, OP, follow the counsel given in the above post. I would recommend Berlin University in Germany or University of Paris-Dauphine in France. Both are good; there are several other good ones. So, make your choice wella.
University of Paris-Dauphine is very very good.
CareerRe: Giving Up Banking For London South Bank University by SEFAGO(m): 8:48am On Nov 21, 2011
Canada is very different from the states and UK for finance recruitment in that the most recruited schools are not the best overall universities. The best three business programs in Canada are Queen's, Ivey (University of western ontario), and Schulich (University of York) with Queens being very elite and drawing all the major bulge brackets/Private equity and hedge funds. These do not correspond to the best universities in the country. However for consulting jobs and such it would be more common to find people from McGill and especially Toronto since Toronto is actually the best university in Canada (Most people know mcgill internationally but Toronto is canada's premier university).

Anyways only like 6-8 U.K universities are worth shelling out your money for masters (Oxbridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Warwick, Bristol and Durham). The rest in general dont have considerable elite recruitment and with the difficulty in securing a work visa nowadays in the UK u better hold your money for ground.

So while London is a financial hub not every he-goat will be allowed to work there anyways considering the fact that there are students from continental europe with way better respected degrees.

London South Bank is a crappy university. I dont even know why people cannot be frank lol and not wreck the poor guys life. Use your money to go to a french country or even germany and endure the racism. At least you would be getting quality education. Or at least spend it on ashewo man adn ogogoro.
