"Fellow Biafrans, where will you run? We ran away from Lagos, and fled northern Nigeria by the thousands. In the battlefields, we ran and allowed the enemy to advance. Must we also run in our homeland? Face the enemy and fight him—street by street, house by house. This is the moment to die bravely for Biafra." But Ojukwu himself ran away. |

May his soul rest in peace and may his family members and loved ones gather the fortitude to bear his demise. I particularly enjoyed his war declaration rhetoric which was directed at Gowon. That style of rhetoric is called anaphora. Excellent orator, RIP. |

"The world's shortest-lived country was the tiny state of Biafra — or so it seemed. Six months ago, the Eastern Region of Nigeria, the home of 8,500-000 Ibo tribesmen, proclaimed itself a sovereign nation and plunged Nigeria into civil war. No country ever recognized Biafra, and the Nigerian federal navy soon choked its economy with a blockade. By October, federal troops sent to quell the rebellion had captured almost a third of Biafra's territory, including the capital of Enugu, and sent the secessionist government fleeing into the region's rain forests." Ojukwu led his people into an "unwinnable" war. |

"If Northern soldiers set one foot in side Biafran soil, not a single inch of Nigerian territory will be safe from our attack." That was why he attacked the Mid West and was moving towards Lagos? Seriously, could he have won North -West- Mid West alliance without a serious external support? In all essential points, he wasted millions of lives of his people. Like I said, he was iconic but not heroic! It's in the news! Go to Economist, Time, New York Times, The Guardian (UK) |

RIP Ezeigbo Gburugburu. We'll miss you. Haters that rejoice over Ojukwu's death are making the mistake of their life. 'Cause in his absence will arise some hardline and uncompromising elements like Uwazurike. Whether haters believes it or not, Ojukwu is a strong moderating force for the Igbos. I will await for who will step up to fill his vacuum. |

"With the federal capture of Owerri two weeks ago, Nigeria's civil war entered a new and perhaps final phase. Secessionist Biafra, now less than one-tenth its original size, holds but one important town: Umuahia. Should it fall, Lieut. Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu would lose his last physical claim on breakaway statehood and be forced, if he is still able, to carry on his fight for Biafra's Ibo people from the jungle." |

"From the outset, the war between Nigeria and secessionist Biafra loomed as an unequal contest. It was not surprising that, as in the earlier Congo conflicts, foreign mercenaries were drawn to Biafra to practice their trade: fighting. Nor was it surprising that the beleaguered Biafrans accepted their services—despite the fact that mercenaries can be narrow, violent men who often harbor a deep contempt for Africans. In the midst of the idealism with which Biafra pleaded its cause for independence, the mercenaries have operated—sometimes ugly, certainly anomalous, but perhaps necessary to Biafra's continued, " Why did he start an unrealistic war? |

"DURING a full year of civil war in Nigeria, the secessionist state of Biafra has banked more on winning the world's sympathy than a military victory. Last week the Biafrans had an undeniable claim to attention—and to pity. Malnutrition was killing off more Biafrans than the Federal troops who occupy most of their land. The chief killer was the protein- deficiency disease called kwashiorkor, which turns the hair to reddish gold and cruelly swells both limbs and stomachs. Workers of international relief agencies reported that as many as 3,000 Biafrans a day, " |

"Tanzania, Zambia, the Ivory Coast and Gabon recognized Biafra, and France and other nations provided covert aid. But the Soviet Union, Egypt and even Britain, after a period of neutrality, supplied weapons and advisers to Nigeria. The United States, officially neutral, provided diplomatic and relief coordination aid. But after 15 months of war, Biafra’s 29,000 square miles had been reduced to 5,000, and deaths had soared." |

Bliss4Lyfe: You want to declare another war! I have just pasted all these stuff to drive home the point that the war was "unwinnable" for Biafra and Ojukwu should have seen far ahead of time. Anyway, he declared a war that could not be won from, military, geographical and diplomatic point of view. It was more of organising a "mass" suicide for his people. For that, he deserved condemnation and not commendation. More of a villain and of course anti-hero. |
