Education / ''NANS Can’t Shut Private Varsities'' Private Varsities Respond To NANS Threat by segzytemi(m): 11:31am On Sep 09, 2013
The proprietors of private universities in the country have called on the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to appeal to those managing the education sector in the country rather than threaten to seal off privately- owned universities over the protracted strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Speaking on the threat by NANS to seal off privately owned universities at the weekend in Akure, the Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Professor James Makinde and the President of the Western Union of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nigeria, Dr Oyeleke Owolabi, described the threat as an empty one.
Makinde said the students body had no right under the Nigerian law to take such action over the lingering ASUU strike, saying all the universities were licensed to operate under the nation’s law.
The VC, who spoke alongside Dr Owolabi at a press conference organised during the Union constituency, said if the failure of NITEL could not affect privately- owned telecommunications companies in the country, then the students could not embark on such action.
Similarly, Makinde explained to the students body that students of private universities are not members of NANS and could not be forced to participate in the activities of the body.
He sympathised with the students, who had been kept out of school for more than eight weeks over the protracted strike embarked upon by their lecturers, but advised them to think of a better option of ending the strike.
He also called on the Federal Government to stop playing politics with the lives of the students, saying they are the future leaders.
Speaking on the high cost of acquiring private university education in the country, Dr Owolabi said churches in Nigeria had come to the aid of the education sector and prevented it from collapsing.
He said private universities had provided better alternative as all public universities had been under lock and key in the past few months adding that “the church-owned universities like Babcock, have given hope to parents and young Nigerians, who need to acquire tertiary education. Although people complain of high cost of fees, but considering the time wasted during strike period like this, one will agree that these privately-owned institutions are not expensive afterall as there’s no doubt that one can graduate with a PHD at the age of 25 in Nigeria.

Family / Man Kidnaps Self, Demands Ransom by segzytemi(m): 12:15pm On Sep 02, 2013
Lagos – A man has been arrested after he allegedly "kidnapped himself" and demanded a 2 million naira ransom from his brothers whom he labelled "stingy fellows", a report says.
According tonaij.com, Samuel Ani, a coffin dealer in Enugu State, faked his kidnapping and hid himself for six days in a bush while he made telephone calls to his two brothers telling them he had been abducted and that ransom was required to get him out of the purported kidnappers den.
He also convinced them he would be killed if the ransom was not paid.
A police spokesperson who confirmed the incident said the case was reported to the State Police Command, which then mobilised its anti-kidnapping unit.
Ani was however arrested after "some amount of money was sent across to an account number provided by the kidnappers". A girl who was sent to cash in the sum of 100 000 naira was located by the police and "was tracked and arrested".
"Her revelation led to the arrest of Samuel who disclosed that he was not kidnapped but that he kidnapped himself so that his wealthy younger brothers can pay money for ransom which he will use to sort out his business dealings", police said.

There was this robbery in Central Bank of
Nigeria, the robber shouted to everyone: "All
don't move, money belongs to the state, life
belongs to you".
Everyone in the bank laid down quietly.
=>This is called "Mind Changing Concept -->
Changing the conventional way of thinking".

One lady lay on the table provocatively, the
robber shouted at her "Please be civilized!
This is a robbery and not a rape!"
=>This is called "Being Professional --> Focus
only on what you are
trained to do!"
---------------------------------------
When the robbers got back, the younger
robber (MBA trained) told the older robber
(who is only primary school educated), "Big
bro, let's count how much we got", the older
robber rebutted and said, "You very stupid,
so much money, how to
count? Tonight TV will tell us how much we
robbed from the bank!"
=>This is called "Experience --> nowadays
experience is more important than paper

After the robbers left, the bank manager told
the bank supervisor to call the police quickly.
The supervisor says "Wait, wait wait, let's put
the #5 million we embezzled into the

The next day, TV news reported that #100

robbers counted and counted and counted,
but they could only count #20 million. The
robbers were very angry and complained
"We risked our lives and only took #20

Education / NANS Plans Protest To End ASUU Strike by segzytemi(m): 7:41am On Aug 28, 2013
LAGOS—National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, plans to hold a nation-wide protest as a last resort to force the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to end the protracted strike of university lecturers.
NANS’ President, Yinka Gbadebo, responding to allegations that the students’ body was notbothered by the 60-day-old strike, said the union had been employing other matured approaches to appeal to both the government and ASUU.
According to him, “NANS is not relaxed but we have decided to take approaches that don’t require us to make noise. We have beenmeeting with executive members of ASUU, the Nigerian Universities Commission, Minister of Education and the FG.
“We have also written to meet with the universities NEEDS Implementation Committeechairman and Governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswan. If we don’t receive any response by the end of the week, we would issue an ultimatum and take it up from there.
“I have been consulting with all SUG leaders in the affected schools so that we would speak with one voice. Going to the streets would be our last option but we would do soto protest how long this strike has lingered.;

Continuation..

In major cities, landlords are passing to their tenants, increases occasioned by ground rent, tenement rate, facility fee and water rate to mention a few. In Abuja, parking fees by different collecting agencies are being imposed on the people although there are no parks. Based on these issues, which could obviously weaken the weak beyond weakness,it can be argued that Nigeria may not break physically but in the sub consciousness of the weak, the break happened mentally years ago. To the privileged class however, these are non-issues because they happen elsewhere and are reportedly temporary sacrifices for development.
Last month, I was at a workshop where some of the speakers blamed the nation’s woes on the media. According to them, journalists as patriots ought to be engaged in advocacy journalism by projecting their country only in good light. During the question and answer session, the key note speaker declined to respond to my question as to what he considered the best way for a journalist to report a public event like the process arrangedby our 36 governors to elect a chairman for the Nigerian Governors Forum. He just said that was politics. I understood him to mean that whether Nigeria would survive over time depends on politics.
Politics / 2015: Who Says Nigeria Cannot Break? by segzytemi(m): 4:41pm On Aug 25, 2013
A few years back, the Americans were reported to have predicted that Nigeria may not survive a likely turmoil in 2015. The date obviously gives a political undertone to the problem considering that it coincides with when our next general elections are due. The significance of the prediction does not lie in the maker as those who perceive America as omniscience would want the nation to believe.
After all, France and indeed some of our own prophets/soothsayers were reported to have also seen ‘visions’ which corroborated the alarm. The truth is that anyone who has followed the history of Nigerian elections can easily have such expectations. In the last one week however, some rather soothing remarks on the subject have been credited to our President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and 2 former Heads of State-General Yakubu Gowon and former President Ibrahim Babangida (IBB).
To the positive views of these statesmen, I would love to say a loud Amen and proceed to wish our nation well. But because wishes are hardly coterminous with reality, it appears ill-advisable to rely on wishes. Again, those who think prayers would do the magic have tobear in mind the common saying that ‘heaven helps those who help themselves.
In other words, prayers alone may not be sufficient especially if some of our compatriotsas usual, choose to be reckless about how theyhandle our numerous centrifugal forces. For instance, we are all aware that the fabric of solidarity which binds our heterogeneous society together is not only fragile but tends tostretch to breaking point at the slightest provocation. Yet, our people, especially the political class, always put our country through constant threat of dismemberment.
Although President Jonathan has said several times that it is premature and distractive to getinvolved in electioneering until next year, the nation is already broken into 2 irreconcilable groupings concerning his role in 2015 elections. And whereas the first group which is a large portion of the south appears ready to die if the President is not re-elected, the second group-another large portion of the North seems ready to bring the world to an end if power does not shift to the North in 2015.
Unfortunately, the show down is virtually inevitable because of the lucrative nature of politics and the winner-takes-all political system that we run. For how long will our nation survive, when with little or no work, a tiny elite group appropriates so much to itself while an exceedingly large segment of the population is left prostrate?
The other day, one political analyst made a rather uncharitable classification of the nation. He said everyone knows what it takes to become a judge, a medical doctor, a professor and indeed any professional practitioner. The politician on the other hand, gets to fame, according to the analysis, through several question channels such as illiteracy, fake certificates, thuggery and all forms of duplicity.
The question as to which of the two groups is better recognised and remunerated in Nigeria for its contribution to national development does not arise because the politicians themselves do not quite know how much they earn. They just expropriate. Why will politics not be a do or die game and who says Nigeria cannot break on account of politics?
The powerful Nigerian political class can in earnest do and undo. If the group or even just one of them organizes a function in our collectively owned Abuja these days, the only roads that would not be shut on the day by our eye-service law enforcement agents wouldbe the few leading straight to the venue of theevent. No one works or goes anywhere that day. How can the Nigerian bureaucracy be efficient or effective when the system of recruitment has been gravely corrupted?
Interestingly, we hear only about the scandalous sale of job placements. The other condemnable dimension of the numerous deficient recruits that are imposed on institutions by the powerful are taken as the entitlement of the latter. Indeed, the same powerful occasionally sets up panels to probe only the jobs that are sold. No one can question the political class as public policies weaken only the powerless
For instance, in order to make the apprehension of criminals easy, persons who own factory fitted ‘tokunbo’ tinted glasses are made to register their cars officially with the police supposedly at no cost. The people and the authorities are however aware that the powerless pay no less than N25, 000 per vehicle at the designated centres for the assignment.
As part of transforming Nigeria, the Immigration Service now officially renews an international passport at the same cost of acquiring a new one. It is probably for the same reason that the Federal Road Safety Commission has decreed that fresh and increased expenditures have to be borne for the procurement of newly designed vehicle plate numbers.
Religion / Re: The Word Of Paul Is Not The Word Of God (1) by segzytemi(m): 4:22pm On Aug 25, 2013
Word of Paul

When Paul wrote his letter to Timothy declaring the scriptures to be the inspiration of God, the New Testament bible was non-existent. Therefore, Paul’s epistles can surely not be included in his classification of the scriptures. In any case, Paul’s view of the Old Testament contradicts that of Jeremiah. Jeremiah insists the scribes tampered with thebible. He asks: “How can you say, ‘We are wise, for we have the law of the LORD,’ when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?” (Jeremiah 8:cool.
Paul is the only writer in the bible who says hisword is the word of God. He says to the Thessalonians: “When you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). This is one of the most deceitful things Paul ever said. In the bible, Paul mostly speaks for himself and about himself. Time and again,he presents himself as his own authority, ensuring that his words should not be mistaken for the word of God.
The word of God can only come from God. It cannot come from man. Paul is a man; therefore, he cannot speak the word of God. John the Baptist, whose heavenly calling Jesus authenticates, never claims he speaks the word of God. Instead he says: “He who comesfrom above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.” (John 3:31). “He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.” (John 3:34).
John is talking here about Jesus and no one else. Only Jesus and the Holy Spirit are divinely authorised to speak the word of God on earth. They are the only two people who come from heaven. They also never speak their own words. They only speak God’s words.
Jesus says: “I have not spoken on my own authority; but the Father who sent me gave mea command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that his command iseverlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told me, so I speak.” (John 12:49-50). The same principle applies tothe Holy Spirit. Jesus says: “He will guide you into all truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak.” (John 16:13).
These principles have no applicability to Paul. Even by his own admission, Paul speaks his own words. He says: “What I speak, I speak not according to the Lord, but as it were, foolishly.” (2 Corinthians 11:17). But God does not speak foolishly.
Religion / The Word Of Paul Is Not The Word Of God (1) by segzytemi(m): 4:20pm On Aug 25, 2013
If God were to inspire me to write a book, the words in my book would still be my words. They would not be the word of God.
Ask a Christian a question about Jesus, and he might answer with a quotation from Paul. But who tells us Paul speaks for Jesus? Why do weneed Paul to speak for Jesus when Jesus speaks for himself? Why do we need Paul to speak for Jesus when Jesus himself warns us: “Be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time?” (Mark 13:23). If Jesus has toldus all we need to know, why do we need someone else to add to, or subtract from, whathe said?
Limitations of scripture
The word of God is, and will forever be, with God. (John 1:1). God created all things with hisword. He spoke his word to the patriarchs andthe prophets of Israel. Then he sent his word to the world in the person of Jesus, his Son. The word of God now sits at the right hand of God from where he speaks into the hearts andminds of sons of God and judges all things. There is no scriptural basis whatsoever for concluding that this word of God is the same as the word of Paul.
Daniel says: “I, Daniel, understood from the scriptures, according to the word of the LORD given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years.” (Daniel 9:2). This shows that the scriptures are separate and distinct from the word of God. The scriptures are given by men.The word of God is given by God. The scriptures are written by men. The word of God is spoken by God.
Accordingly, Jesus points out that the word of God gives life: scriptures do not. He says to the Jews: “You search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of me. But you are not willing to come to me that you may have life.” (John 5:39-40).
Paul says: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16). But this does not make the scriptures the word of God.There is a difference between what God says and what God inspires. If God were to inspire me to write a book, the words in my book would still be my words. They would not be the word of God. All that can be said is that mywords were written by the inspiration of God. If God were to inspire me to do a painting, it would not thereby be the painting of God? It would still be my painting.
Second Peter
Contrary to popular perception, the writer of 2 Peter does Paul no favours. He says: “No prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by thewill of man, but holy men of God spoke as theywere moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20-21). However, Paul is not a prophet. 2 Peter does not classify Paul’s writing as prophecy but as “scripture.” Christians need to understand that the law and the prophets are the highest form of inspired Jewish writings. Other “writings” are considered of lower cadre.
2 Peter does not even acknowledge Paul as an apostle of Christ. Instead, it pointedly refers to him as “Brother Paul.” It does not say Paul writes by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Instead, it says Paul writes: “according to the wisdom that God gave him.” (2 Peter 3:15). That is certainly not a high commendation. It actually means 2 Peter does not accept Paul’s writings as the word of God. At best, they are words of wisdom. I also write according to the wisdom God gave me. But that does not make my writings the word of God.
Moreover, the major concern of 2 Peter is that Paul’s letters are inclined to lead unstable believers astray. I share that concern. However, there is no danger in the word of God leading anybody astray. Nowhere in the scriptures are we counseled to be careful that the word of God might lead us astray. 2 Peter says some of Paul’s writings are “hard to understand.” Again, this immediately shows they cannot be the word of God. The word of God is not hard to understand. On the contrary, it “gives understanding to the simple.” (Psalm 119:130).

Note:
X square denote chi square. If your table is such that have one column and several rows, your degree of freedom would be n-1 that is, number of rows minus 1. But if your table contains more than a row and several columns, then ur degree of freedom would be (r-1)(c-1). You need degree of freedom when checking ur tables.

After your calculation, i.e., your calculated chi square value, compare it to tabulated value. If it is less than the tabulated value, you do not reject null hypothesis, but if it is greather than the calculated value, you reject your null hypothesis.

Your null hypothesis in this case would be the results of ur findings.

For the chi square tables, you can find it in waec/neco four figure tables.

X^2= summation of [( O - E )^2/ E]
while O = observed value
E = expected value
summation sign should be used were u see the summation of, i couldn't find the sign on my phone.

*concluding part*

The assumption by Mr. Balogun in his piece is that the component parts of the APC, having “burnt their ships” to form the new party, have no option but to dig in and makeit work, is a stretched logic bothering on wishful thinking as our knowledge of the behavior of the individuals involved tells us otherwise. Indeed, we expect to see the usual cross-carpeting and reverse-migration as soon as primaries are concluded and those political jobseekers do not find all the favours they seek in the new contraption.
Towards the end of his piece, Mr. Balogun, however, stumbled on some truth and was able to state a resounding fact, that “the onlyway Nigeria can benefit from the emergenceof APC is when manifestoes take front burner of political discussion.”
Unfortunately, this is one area the new partyhas so far failed woefully in. Besides the nowroutine daily attacks on President Goodluck Jonathan and the rehashing of the same old talk, the party does not seem eager (if its communication so far is an indication of its thinking) to sell its own plans to Nigerians and present itself as an alternative. It rather seems fixated at name calling and derogatory remarks, including some that I think are outright disrespectful of the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Mr. Balogun’s mention of the existence of some 400-page APC manifesto is quite interesting. Where is this document? What are its contents? They certainly do not expect Nigerians search for this document like it is the Holy Grail. One would expect thatthat by now the party should have an active website, but a quick search on Google will reveal that we should not be expecting one until after about 43 days.
A strong and viable opposition is no doubt an essential part of any electoral process, and a major opposition party is desirable forincreasing competitiveness in the polity and making life better for the people. However, the existence of one (in this case the APC) does not guarantee Nigerians automatic enjoyment of the expected benefit, nor does it mean that we should now all scream eureka and go to sleep. We are still a long way from home, and if the APC represents the kind of progressive politics that is expected to bring us out of the woods, then we really have quite a long and tortuous journey still ahead.
I will conclude by recommending this recent article by RW Johnson on what lessons Nigeria could learn from the American experience. The writer, after highlighting a period in America’s history when she faced the same challenges as Nigeria does today, proceeded to show through historical fact, how a people can truly take over their land and cause real change.
Until we start thinking that way, raising a fresh breed of ‘tomorrows men’ who resent the dominance of plutocrats, hate corruptionand are sincerely interested in cleaning-up the system, we will merely be running dangerously round a bonfire.
Politics / ''APC'' Simply A Botanical Name For PDP by segzytemi(m): 8:26pm On Aug 14, 2013
Since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the registration of the All Progressives Congress (APC), we have witnessed, quite expectedly, asituation where virtually every political statement, interview and even opinion articles have been focused on it. In that childish way we react to new things, we have seen commentators run to town screaming uhuru and expressing their optimism that the new party finally presents a viable alternative, the absence of which in their opinion, has been the bane of our political development.
But there is a difference between expressingoptimism and twaddling. In Segun Balogun’s articleyesterday, I witnessed finally, the descent into banality of this ‘it is now well with us’ sloganeering that has plagued public discourse in recent time. Mr. Balogun, obviously a strong sympathiser of the APC, had sought to educate us on how blessed we are to have the APC and to chastise thosehe referred to as blabbers for expressing doubts about the new party. As much as he tried, he did not seem to advance any logical argument in favour of his position, nor did he succeed in providing us any new information beyond what has been repeatedto the point of cliché, about a change that was now set to birth in our land.
What we got from the piece instead was a condescending sermon on how we should be eternally grateful to the proponents of APC and how they (by the singular feat of registering a political party) were now deserving of the same respect we accord our founding fathers. This was after telling us that the emergence of APC was the biggest thing to have happened on Nigeria’spolitical turf since independence; a statement that makes me seriously question the Nigeria history credentials of the writer.
Then, in classical counting of the chicks evenbefore the cock and the hen have mated, Mr. Balogun declared that “every obstacle against APC’s success as a political party has already been overcome” and therefore, the party had (by the simple act of getting registered) become triumphant.
Mr. Balogun is entitled to his opinion no doubt, but the cynics who do not share the APC excitement have a good reason for their position as well; and instead of condemning them, their concerns should be taken very seriously if the new party is interested in making any difference. It must be stated thatit will be irresponsible for anyone to dismiss those who do not sing the APC tune as PDP apologists. Indeed it is for the same reasons why many are disenchanted by the PDP that they are unimpressed by the APC.
The PDP, as we all know, was (as is still is) a gathering of people of diverse views solely for the purpose of winning elections. Over the years, many have sighted the absence of a common political ideology as the bane of the PDP’s reign, stressing that a robust opposition, one that will bring meaningful change, must be that with a strong ideology and a pragmatic manifesto, peopled by persons of proven integrity.
Politics, as we know, is one of the social domains whose practices are virtually exclusively discursive. Political cognition is bydefinition ideologically based, and political ideologies are largely reproduced by discourse. Ideologies embody the general principles that control the overall coherence of the social representations shared by the members of a group. Therefore, you expect that members of a political group must share certain ground principles, a coherent understanding of society and an agreed socio-economic direction framework based on which the people can assess them, vote them and benchmark their performance.
The APC is at best a negotiated compromise by people as different as the day is from the night, with the only ideology common to them being the capture of power at all costs in 2015. It does not help their case that a number of their more prominent members, who seem to have undergone overnight repentance and are now currently championing this song of change, are the very same persons who have in various positions in the past failed to deliver on theirresponsibilities, and who in more decent climes should either be serving jail terms or be ashamed to even appear in public.
The APC has been flirting with and courting many of these persons of questionable character, leaving one to wonder how possible it is for any meaningful change to emanate from those stables; and with the way the out-of-favour PDP members are being welcomed with open arms, one can be forgiven for saying the APC was simply a botanical name for the PDP.

Politics / POVERTY Reason Why Nigeria Cannot Brake – Gov. Lamido Blasts The Ruling Power by segzytemi(m): 7:41am On Aug 12, 2013
Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa state reacting to comment recently credited to President Goodluck Jonathan that despite thecrisis rocking the nation, Nigeria cannot brake. Lamido agreed with President Jonathan that Nigeria cannot break, siting deliberate poverty inflicted by the ruling class on the ordinary Nigerians the reason why thecountry cannot brake; he said: “It is too weakto break. Who will break it? The ordinary person in Jigawa or the ordinary person in Sokoto or the ordinary person in Bayelsa?
“Is it the Ibo vulcaniser or the Yoruba womanthat is selling kerosene by the roadside or theOkada man in Delta?
“They don’t have the capacity to unite because they are burdened by poverty. We have taken away from them their dignity, their self esteem, their pride and self worth so that they cannot even organise.
“Up there, we (elite) unite, we sing and so wewill never allow Nigeria to break because once it breaks, we will lose.
“But the common man loses nothing. What is he losing? He is already living in hell; he cannot lose anything more than this hell.”

Politics / African-americans Demand The Right Of Abode by segzytemi(m): 1:30am On Aug 04, 2013
The Association of Africans in the Diaspora (AAD) on Friday called on African governments to remove bottle-necks that hinder African-Americans from coming to stay on the continent.
Ms Maisie Meggon Howell, AAD Representative said most times, when Africa- Americans arrive on the continent they are given a huge welcome and told they can come and stay, but the reality comes when they have to renew their visas or to extend their stay.
She therefore challenged the government to lead the way in offering Africans in the Diaspora a right of abode.
Ms Howell made the call when she openeda high level forum to discuss “Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance- The Unfinished Agenda,” which was held as part of this year’s PANAFEST/Emancipation Day celebration.
The ceremony was attended by personalities in the creative arts industry and people from other African countries as well as chiefs and queen mothers.
Mr Victor Moffat, Convener of Think Africa Forum kick-started the deliberations with an African Union touch.
Ms Pavelyn Tendai Musaka, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador, who spoke on behalf of the Diplomatic Corps noted that the real dream of the African Union (AU) is yet to be achieved and advised fellow Africans not to look outside for solutions to Africa’sproblems.
She explained that looking at other continents for solutions to Africa’s problem is a major stumbling block hindering an effective AU.
Mr Rashid Pelpou, Minister of State Responsible for Public-Private Partnership, said the celebration of PANAFEST/ Emancipation Day should be a rallying point to deliberate on things that plague the African family, which has become an impediment for attaining social and economic advancement and total freedom.
Mr Pelpou who represented President John Dramani Mahama said: “The occasionshould ignite some passion in us to examine efforts being made at different levels in our respective countries, cities and communities to bring development tothe doorsteps of the citizenry.”
He noted that re-discovering the African heritage is a foundation for building the African future and emphasised that the people of Africa ought to be able to achieve dignity of managing their own affairs.
Ms Hannah Tetteh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, who chaired the forum, urged the delegates to give meaning to what the AU is doing for Africans.
Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, expressed her determination to facilitate abrand of tourism, which would enrich the experience of people of African descent and inspire them to work together for thebetterment of Africans.
Professor Atukwei Okai, Secretary General of the Pan-African Writers Association (PANA) also gave a wake-up call on the need for the creation of a United States of Africa, stressing that the time is now.
He said: “Let us stop being dependent on the outside world because everything is within, the days when we allowed the world to overwhelm us is over.”
Mr Richard Owusu, President of the Pan African Youth Clubs appealed to government to help his organisation to form youth clubs in all secondary schools in Ghana.
He expressed the hope that the future of Africa lies in the hands of the youth.
Politics / Re: Nigeria's Politics Of Zero-sum Game by segzytemi(m): 4:40am On Jul 31, 2013
Why must Nigerian youths allow themselves to be used by these no good politicians to kill, maim and destroy, all because they want access to power in 2015? Is it not time Nigerian youths and the middle class begin a movement to rescue Nigeria from these scavengers, who call themselves indispensable politicians?
A politician, who performs creditably in office, has nothing to fear about re-election. Nigerians are no fools. They know who is serving their interest. If Mr. President has performed creditably, he has nothing to fear about 2015. But the question to ask him is, Mr.President in your mind and conscience, have you delivered on your promises? Politics of zero-sum game will not help this nation called Nigeria; it will only set us back. All of you involved in this unwholesome act of zero-sum politics are doing Nigeria a disservice. The economy is losing massively in terms of investment flow due to this mindless war. It has to stop now.

Politics / Nigeria's Politics Of Zero-sum Game by segzytemi(m): 4:31am On Jul 31, 2013
What makes economics an interesting science of behaviour is its attempt to predict the behaviour of economic agents. In the attempt to predict how certain economic actors will behave in a given situation, economic statisticians introduced the theory of probability. Using probability and permutations, the concept of zero-sum game emerged. In the game of zero-sum, the winnertakes all.
Looking at the practice of politics in Nigeria, it was initially politics of sharing by allocation. It is now absolutely a zero-sum game. Political actors in Nigeria today are involved in the game to benefit themselves only. It is a situation in which one politician’s gain comes only from another politician’s losses. The net balance in total wealth allocation is now zero, meaning that the resources that should have been used to develop the nation are taken over by political actors for their use.
The nation’s wealth is simply shifting from onepolitician to another. In the attempt to make it,they stop short at nothing. Whoever gets in their way is an enemy that must be crushed to death. They act like moving train, whose path no human must cross when it is approaching. They have rendered institutions of state unworkable.
Nigerian politicians are deadly. They employ every means available to cling to power, not for service, but to dispense favour, enrich themselves and secure the future of their unborn babies. It is only in Nigeria that politicsis big business. The more you sow either in resources or violence to diminish your opponent, the more the benefit.
In economics, allocation of resources is key to achieving economic well-being of all, which is the ultimate goal of good governance.
This is because what is available cannot go round all; bring to the doorstep of every citizen the dividend of democracy. The overall well-being of society is premised on efficient allocation of scarce resources. When such are rightly allocated and execution carefully monitored, it ensures value for money.
But what you find in Nigeria is war between political friends and foes. Nigerian politicians are friends as long as they agree to a sharing formula. The moment there is disagreement on sharing, the war starts. No Nigerian politician wants to lose a kobo to any other. Ask yourself, why will 36 state governors enterinto a room to vote only to come out to disagree and it has now become an open war? Is this war between the governors’ forum and the Presidency because of the Nigerian electorate? Certainly not! Nigerian politicians do not disagree on principles as it isin other places. Not even along party line; they do so on what they seem to be losing out from. The budget war about constituency projects is all about what comes to me in the budget.
Is the war between the Rivers State legislators and the governor about the people? No, it is about the desire of the center to cling to power! Is Patience Jonathan’s involvement about the welfare of the people of Rivers State? Not at all! It is about fighting the enemy, who wants to stop me from being a first lady, having access to power, access to the purse ofNiger- Delta states. It is about the perception that if 2015 comes and my bread winner is stopped, I will be in the cold. In decent and sane societies, with her confession, she would have been picked up for questioning, but alas, the machinery of state will not allow that in Nigeria.
Is the in-fighting within the PDP about the wellbeing of Nigerians? Of course not. It is positioning and repositioning to lay hands on the national cake. It is to scheme out those opponents in the zero-sum political games politicians play in Nigeria. Have you not heard that Nigerian politicians, who find their way topolitical offices earn the highest wages in the world? Yet, in comparison, Nigerian economy is under-performing compared to those of other countries. It is only in Nigeria you go into politics not to serve but to be served.
Nigeria politics is about making unjustifiable wealth. How do you explain that a kilometer ofroad in Nigeria is constructed at $1million? How do you explain that the President or Minister of Petroleum Resources can on their own award oil blocks to whoever they wish? Why will politicians not kill, maim or do anything to become president?
Why is every region fighting to have their own as the next president of Nigeria? So that the few that have access can make it. Is it not why selfish politicians, who were around Umaru Yar’adua did not want him out of office when it was obvious the man was incapacitated? How come that at 80, Papa Anenih is still out there struggling in the name of politics? In more decent societies, he should be resting, waiting for the ultimate call. What value is an 85-year-old man adding to the polity? Why are these men still parading themselves as people, who have things to offer other than to share the nation’s cake?
