Sports / Apart From Emenike, Super Eagles Do Not Have Prolific Strikers – Fans by segzytemi(m): 9:45pm On Oct 13, 2013
Abuja – Football fans in the FCT celebrated in style on Sunday the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory over Ethiopia’s Walya Antelopes in Addis Ababa in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier.
Emmanuel Emenike’s brace in the 68th and 90th minutes gave the Nigerian side victory.
The goals came after Behailu Assefa had opened scoring for the hosts in the 57th minute.
The match played at the Addis Ababa National Stadium was the first leg tie in the final round of the African zone elimination series.
However, many Nigerian fans had ahead of the match thronged the popular football viewing centres with vuvuzelas.
The instrument had been made popular by South Africans at the 2010 World Cup they hosted.
A correspondent who monitored the centres reported that those visited were filled to capacity as the fans celebrated the victory.
A viewing centre operator at Boulevard Garden in Maitama, Vincent Obike, said the match’s intensity made Eagles’ coach Stephen Keshi a worried man for a major part of the game.
“But he will be very pleased, especially as the weather and altitude in Ethiopia didn’t really affect the performance of the boys in any way.
“However, we thank God for this hard-earned victory, because we are now almost certain of qualification for the World Cup.
“But in fairness, we must also give credit to the Ethiopians, knowing that they haven’t come this far before. They will hopefully build on this feat in future,” he said.
One of the fans, Mr John Etim, a student, said while the Eagles lost a lot of scoring chances, they were the better side, compared to the Walya Antelopes.
“I thank God for giving us victory against Ethiopia today and I must say the game was very interesting. We deserve to be in Brazil, because Nigeria is the giant of Africa.
“In the beginning though, Nigeria never looked like winning this game. But at the end, the Eagles won,’’ he said.
Etim, however, advised Keshi to look for a prolific striker to complement Emmanuel Emenike upfront in the future.
“Apart from Emenike, Nigerians do not have a prolific striker that can create and take chances.
“I love the way the Super Eagles played their passing game and built from the back slowly, before attacking with a great speed,’’ he said.
Some fans at City Park in Wuse II also expressed joy at the match’s outcome.
“I am so excited, and we thank God the Ethiopians didn’t take all the scoring chances that came their way.
“If they had done, we would not have been celebrating and jubilating like this,” George Okore, a businessman, said.
Taiwo Sewuese, a clergyman said the team’s victory showed the stuff Nigerians were made of.
“It is a sign that no obstacle is too much for Nigerians to surmount. It shows the Nigerian spirit, which is full of resilience.
“It shows that we can bounce back from any situation that is adverse, and if we come together and work as a people, there is nothing this nation cannot overcome.
“This is to teach Nigerians to have confidence in themselves and in this great nation, and that the future is bright for Nigeria,’’ Sewuese said.
At another viewing centre known as “Nook” and located in Wuse Zone 5, a businessman, Mr Sylvester Cletus, declared free drinks and plates of pepper soup for all football fans at the centre.
Cletus said that the Super Eagles’ victory had made his day.
“I came to watch this match with a heavy heart, after I was duped by a business partner.
“However, Super Eagles’ victory today has lightened my mood and I feel on top of the world now,” he said.
A similar scenario played itself out at the Games Village in Abuja, where the owner of a beer parlour in the neighbourhood declared a bonanza.
He gave out a free bottle of beer for every two bought.
“The Eagles have shown to the world that good things can still come out of Nigeria,’’ Jerry Tilley-Gyado, the beer parlour owner, said.
“Words can’t express the depth of my joy, because those that had written Nigeria off in African football have been proved wrong.
“We are on our way to Brazil by the grace of God,” he said.
Richard Omatiga, a football enthusiast said Nigeria had found its rhythm in football with the victory.
“What we saw this (Sunday) afternoon is almost like the Super Eagles of 1994 – disciplined, pacy, determined and focused.
“This win has put the World Cup ticket beyond the Walya Antelopes, even before the second leg game,” he added.
The victory has pushed the Eagles closer to a fifth appearance at the World Cup.
The second leg game of the qualifier holds at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar on Nov. 16. (NAN)

Marriage quotes 01

Marriage is not a word. It is a sentence--a life sentence.

Marriage is very much like a violin; after the sweet music is over, the strings are attached.

Marriage is love. Love is blind. Therefore, marriage is an institution for the blind.

Marriage is an institution in which a man loses his Bachelor's Degree and the woman gets her Masters.

Marriage is a thing which puts a ring on a woman's finger and two under the man's eyes.

Marriage certificate is just another word for a work permit.

Marriage is not just a having a wife, but also worries inherited forever.

Marriage requires a man to prepare 4 types of "rings":
* The Engagement Ring
* The Wedding Ring
* The Suffe-Ring
* The Endu-Ring

Health / Cure For Dengue Fever by segzytemi(m): 8:21pm On Oct 07, 2013
I saw this on a site and i feel like sharing it, who knows we might be helping a friend...

We would like to share this interesting discovery from a friend’s classmate’s son who has just recovered from dengue fever.
Apparently, his son was in the critical stage at the ICU when his blood platelet count dropped badly after 15 liters of blood transfusion. His father was so worried that he sought another
friend’s recommendation whose son was saved.
He confessed that he gave his son
raw juice of the papaya leaves.
After drinking the raw papaya leaf juice, his platelet count rose up instantly to a good level. Even the doctors and nurses were surprised. After the second day he was discharged. So he asked me to pass this good news around.
Accordingly it is raw papaya leaves, 2pcs just cleaned and pound and squeeze with filter cloth. You will only get one tablespoon per leaf.. So two tablespoon per serving once a day. Do not boil or cook or rinse with hot water, it will loose its strength. Only the leafy part and no stem or sap. It is very bitter
and you have to swallow it like “Won Low Kat”. But it works.
That papaya juice is a natural cure for dengue fever. As dengue fever is rampant now. I think it’s good to share this with all.
Please spread the news about this as lately there are many dengue cases. It’s great if such natural cure could help to ease the sufferings of dengue . Furthermore it’s so easily available. Blend them and squeeze the juice! It’s simple and miraculously effective!!

Everyone in the wedding ceremony was watching the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle to give away to the groom.
They reached the altar and the waiting groom; the bride kissed her father and placed some thing in his hand.
Everyone in the room was wondering what was given to the father by the bride. The father could feel the suspense in the air and all eyes were on him to divulge the secret and say something.
So he announced, “Ladies and Gentlemen today is the luckiest day of my life.”
Then he raised his hands with what his daughter gave him and continued, “My daughter finally, finally returned my credit card to me.”
The whole audience including priest started laughing….
….. But not the poor groom!

Respect ur Parents

An 80 year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45 years old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow perched on their window.
The Father asked his Son, “What is this?”
The Son replied “It is a crow”.

After a few minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, “What is this?”
The Son said “Father, I have just now told you “It’s a crow”.

After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time, What is this?”
At this time some ex-pression of irritation was felt in the Son’s tone when he said to his Father with a rebuff. “It’s a crow, a crow”.

A little after, the Father again asked his Son t he 4th time, “What is this?” This time the Son shouted at his Father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”

A little later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born.
On opening a page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary :-
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My Son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time h e asked me the same question again and again for 23 times. I did not at all feel irritated I rather felt affection for my innocent child”.
While the little child asked him 23 times “What is this”, the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and when today the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son felt irritated and annoyed. So..
If your parents attain old age, do not repulse them or look at them as a burden, but speak to them a gracious word, be cool, obedient, humble and kind to them. Be considerate to you…

Politics / How We Survived Crash, By Feyi Agagu by segzytemi(m): 10:04pm On Oct 05, 2013
If individuals took their instincts more seriously, perhaps, the tragedy of last Thursday involving the embalmed body of late Governor Olusegun Agagu of Ondo State and the burial team traveling aboard the Associated Airline Flight, with registration number SCD 361, may have been avoided.
Indeed, Feyi, son of Chief Agagu, who was on board that flight, may have been spared the horrors of hospitalisation in the wake of the tragedy.
He is lucky to be one of the survivors.
Sunday Vanguard has been informed that shortly after the crash and the hospitalisation of the initial nine survivors including, of course, Feyi, it came to light that there were strong indications just before boarding the plane that all may not have been well. Two of the survivors later died that day.
Speaking to very close family friends and sympathizers as well as very senior government officials who came around on Thursday afternoon, the young Agagu disclosed that just a few minutes before the passengers of the ill-fated flight boarded, he did not feel very comfortable.
Mr. Feyi Agagu, son, survived.
According to the family insider Feyi spoke to, “the young man said that once they got to the tarmac before boarding and once he sighted the plane, what struck him was the seemingly very old look of the plane”. Continuing, the source narrated: “Feyi said he didn’t like the looks of the plane. “He also said but for the importance and significance of the trip, his inner sense didn’t feel comfortable boarding the plane.
“In fact, Feyi said he told another survivor, Femi Akinsanya, that the plane looked too old and he didn’t feel like boarding.
“ But Feyi said he was told not to get himself worked up needlessly since this was not going to be his first time aboard a plane neither would this be the first old-looking plane that he would board.
“That was how he said he boarded the plane”.
Sunday Vanguard was later made to understand that the event which transpired between Feyi Agagu and his brother-in-law, Femi Akinsanya before they boarded that plane suggested that the former may not have had anything to do with the flight arrangement for the movement of his father’s corpse to Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Though 23years old, the plane, according to Balami David, the President of the National Association of Pilots and Engineers, during a television interview, reportedly operated some days before the ill-fated flight.
No matter.
Sunday Vanguard was told by the source that Feyi recounted “how he and Femi Akinsanya boarded the plane and moved straight to the back end to take up seats.”
“Why Feyi chose the back seat”, the source said, “was more a function of his state of mind about the state of the plane rather than a preference for taking a back seat.
“When they sat down, Feyi told me that he and Femi simply prayed that they should just take off and land safely, oblivious of what lay ahead of them.
“Feyi said once they took off, everything happened so fast.
“What he also told me was that both he and Femi noticed what looked like a crack not far from where they sat at the rear end of the plane

Politics / Eyewitness Accounts Of Lagos Plane Crash by segzytemi(m): 6:38am On Oct 04, 2013
An airport taxi driver, Mathew Babatunde who witnessed the crash narrated how it happened. He said, “I was just passing the toll gate with passengers in my car when I saw the aircraft coming down. I even thought the plane will crash on my car the way it was bent.
My passengers immediately shouted at me that I should swerve the car. Immediately, I swerved my car then I saw that the plane was struggling to go back up.
It eventually hit a Mango tree behind Saraha Tank Farm. Immediately the plane hit the tree, it divided into two and caught fire. I saw one man walked out with his leg, he was supported by two other people. It took about 20 minutes before ambulance came and another forty minutes before fire service people arrived the scene.
“Those around, including Air Force, Arik and other Nigerians were helping to rescue the victims.
“I am not working again today, I want to go and park my car now. I am no longer interested.”
Another witness, Mrs. Chidinma Nwoke spoke while crying, saying she was among the first people who arrived the scene of the crash. She said “we tried to help the victims but the soldiers and airport officials refused. They said it is dangerous and that we were not wearing safety boots.
“It is horrible. I saw a woman who tried to jump out but she got hooked on the fence and she died there. The fire outbreak consumed most of them, including one man who was almost out. That man would have been alive if the fire services were on ground early enough. He was almost out of the aircraft but fire caught his trousers and that was how he got burnt”.
“I saw a man who wore a white trouser walked with his legs from the crash. He had only a slight injury on the head and was taken to the clinic near the toll gate”.
Another person who witnessed it, Mr. Nasir Ramon Olanrewaju, a senior communications manager working at the headquarters of United Bank for Africa (UBA), simply said, “I was at a private hangar waiting for a flight to Ghana when I saw the plane, an Embraer come down at the airport. I saw it plunged into a building, close to Tank Farm at the airport, close to toll gate”.

With long range of unprecedented achievements, he is being compared with music gods like Stevie Wonder. This 19 year old world megastar is greater than the whole of African entertainment industry both in acting, music or anything else.

Now ruling the world of music, he has became a REAL LEGEND..

Fela, Sunny Ade, Lucky Dube, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Salif Keita, Papa Wemba, Jhabu Bayete, Yossou N'dour etc combined are not as great as this teenager.

No fewer than six people were feared dead, while six others were critically injured after a tipper driver rammed into roadside traders at old Ota Toll Gate in Ogun State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the accident, which happened around 11am on Thursday, was caused by brake failure.
Eyewitnesses said the sand-filled tipper marked STOCKINGER STEYR and with number plate JJJ 551 XB, ran into the traders who were selling pepper, oil and bread among others.
An eyewitness said, “The incident happened around 11am. The tipper was coming from Lagos when it had a brake failure.
“As the driver struggled with the vehicle, the vehicle veered off the road and rammed into the traders.
“It was not a beautiful sight; the tipper was climbing over the women, men and children selling bread, pepper and other wares by the roadside. Those buying too were not spared.”
He said the driver of the vehicle immediately fled to avoid mob attack.
Our correspondent observed that the area was covered with blood stains, and smashed wares.
As tears flowed, the residents of the area and other sympathizers started making frantic efforts to take some of the victims to hospitals.
The police and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Enforcement Corps later arrived at the scene.
The FRSC Ota unit Commander, Mr. Sunday Omafu, said two people died in the incident, while seven others were critically injured.
He said one of the dead was an official of NUPENG, while the second victim was a woman buying pepper for a naming ceremony.
He said, “These two people have been identified by their relatives and taken to the Ifo General Hospital mortuary. The rest who are in critical condition have been taken to the Sango General Hospital for treatment.”
He said that the tragedy was caused by disobedience to the state’s traffic rules, adding that the corps would continue to organise sensitisation programmes for members of the public.
He said, “We have always advised that they should not be selling at the toll gate because it is dangerous. We have been driving away okada riders from the road, but they keep returning because they think you don’t want them to make money. We hope to increase our enlightenment programme because this period of the year can be challenging.”
Omafu added that the tipper had been towed to the premises of the Ota Area Command of the Nigeria Police.
The spokesman for the state police command, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, however, said three people died, while four were injured.

Politics / Nigeria @ 53: Senators Decry Slow Pace Of Devt by segzytemi(m): 8:12am On Sep 27, 2013
ABUJA—AS Nigeria clocks 53 years of independence on Tuesday, senators, yesterday, lamented that the country had not met the expectations of its founding fathers.
The senators, who spoke during debate on the motion, titled “Congratulations to Nigerians on her 53rd Independence Anniversary” sponsored by Senators Victor Ndoma-Egba,PDP,Cross River Central and Ita Enang, PDP, Akwa Ibom North East, and ten others, regretted that Nigeria was still far below expectation, especially when compared with its contemporaries like Malaysia and Brazil.
They insisted that Nigeria was in a pitiable state when compared to some other countries in the world that became independent nations about the same time as Nigeria.
Contributing to the debate, Senator Smart Adeyemi,PDP, Kogi West, said though at independence Nigeria was considered to be one of the emerging great nations of the world, it was more or less a dashed hope, even in its present state at 53.
He identified parochialism as one of the major problems of modern day Nigerians, particularly in the realm of leadership.
He said: “At 53, were Nigeria nation being governed the way it is supposed to have been governed over the years, we shouldn’t be talking about federal character.”
“Unlike patriotic leaders like the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the late Nnamdi Azikwe, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, etc, who started the Nigerian project on a very solid note, anchored on maximizing the greatest goods for the greatest number of people, most of the modern day leaders after the independence era, have been running aground the Nigerian nation, being parochial leaders.”
Adeyemi said the problem of parochial leadership rocking the country at the moment had turned most of the state governors to be governors of the ethnic group they belong to in the states, as well as other highly placed public officers, thus adversely affecting the country’s development.
“For Nigeria to be great as hoped from the beginning there is need for possible change of mindset of all Nigerians, both followers and leaders, to the Nigeria project.
”We need to start seeing ourselves first as Nigerians before remembering any other primordial identities, the needed national orientation used by countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore etc, all that were at the same level with Nigeria in the 60’s but far more developed than it today,” he said.
Also speaking, Senator Ganiyu Solomon, APC, Lagos West, said at 53, it was regrettable that Nigeria was still where it was when compared to other countries that started the journey of independent nationhood with it.
He urged self-assessment to reflect on the nation’s past for the needed insight into how to position her for the future through collective responsibility.
In his own contribution, Senator Ademola Adeseun, APC, Oyo State, talked on the need for the National Assembly to be more proactive in setting the agenda for Nigerian development in the coming years.
According to him, the first republic that was rated to be the best era in the nation’s history was more or less driven by the parliament.
Senators Mohammadu Magoro, PDP, Kebbi South, Eyinaya Abaribe,PDP Abia South, Kabiru Gaya,APC, Kano South, noted that at 53, problems such as teeming youth unemployment, poor electricity supply, incessant ethno-religious crises etc, were to be things of the past for the country.
They, therefore, tasked government at all levels to be more serious on the development of the country.
Senate President, David Mark, in his own remarks, regretted that the attitude and behaviour of most Nigerians today were contrary to what “our old National Anthem stood for.”

Crime / Girl Defiled, Lover Shot By Unknown Gunmen On Her Birthday by segzytemi(m): 6:53am On Sep 24, 2013
Unidentified gunmen, weekend, r*ped a young girl, who was celebrating her birthday with her lover who was also shot in the head.
The incident occurred last Saturday at Nsukka, Enugu State, when the girl’s boyfriend, identified as Sunday Ozioko, 30, took out his lover in his new Toyota Camry saloon car as part of the birthday celebration, according to Vanguard.
Sources said the gunmen, who rode a motorcycle, blocked the vehicle along Orba Road at 6.30p.m., took over the car and sped off through Orba Market to Obollo-Afor.
They later stopped at Alor-Ano Community Secondary School where the girl was molested and her lover shot. He however miraculously survived, but was said to be in critical condition.
A Vanguard source said that when the two gunmen were through at 9:30p.m., they gave the victim N500, having been dropped off at Odolu in KogiState.
Shortly after releasing her, the bandits allegedly made for the girl again, apparently realising that the girl could identify them later. She was however able to escape through a path that led her to a crusade ground, where Adonai Faith Assembly was having a vigil.
The obviously horrified girl was said to have narrated her ordeal to the congregation, who she told her fiancee was still lying in his pool of blood.
According to a source, the pastor of the church immediately swung into action, reached out to the police at Nsukka Urban, who quickly rushed him to Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka.
Efforts made by Vanguard to speak with the victim at his hospital private ward proved abortive as his relations barred press men from seeing him.
Sunday Ozioko has now been transferred to UNTH, Enugu, for a surgical operation on his head.
Confirming the incident, Enugu State Police spokesman, Ebere Amarizu, said police were on top of the situation and vowed that everything possible would be done to track down the bandits.

What is it about Twitter? Whether the events are earthshaking or trivial, the site of more than a half-billion accounts has something to say -- and often, it's upset.
Ben Affleck is named the new Batman; the anger flows. George Zimmerman is acquitted; people fly off the handle. Comments on sports, TV shows, politics, news media -- when there's something negative to be said, it will be said (occasionally with poor spelling and IN ALL CAPS) on Twitter.
As Stephen Colbert summarized the Miss America outcry on "The Colbert Report," "And Twitter, as usual, could not be happy."
David Reiss, a San Diego-based psychiatrist who specializes in personality dynamics, observes that Twitter's impulsiveness can get the best of people.
"It's very easy to jot something off and hit send, and you can impulsively say something without thinking it through," he says, noting that it's the reverse of the classic angry letter you write and then put in a drawer until you cool off. "With Twitter, you don't need to (do that). And if there is feedback or push back, you don't necessarily even see it."

Politics / Nigerians Encourage Corruption – President Jonathan by segzytemi(m): 8:46am On Sep 18, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan has lamented that in spite of institutional reforms aimed at fighting corrupt practices, Nigerians, through their actions encourage graft.

He also said both the public and private sectors were involved in corruption but stated that he would not give out their names “so that I won’t be attacked.”

The President spoke while declaring open the 54th annual conference of the Nigerian Economic Society in Abuja on Tuesday.

The conference, which has as its theme, “Institutions, institutional reforms and economic development,” is the single largest gathering of economists in the country.

Jonathan argued that if Nigerians did not “reward corrupt practices” through their actions, those involved in them would have no need to continue.

He said, “I want a society where all of us will frown upon people who come up with what they are not supposed to have.

“(If) a young man who just started a job and within six months or a year comes up with a car of N7m to N15m and you clap for him, then you are rewarding corruption.

“So for us as a nation to bring corruption down, it is not just blaming government or blaming the police. but all individuals must frown upon people who have what they are not supposed to have; who live in houses they are not supposed to live in; who drive cars they are not supposed to drive and who wear expensive suits they are not supposed to wear.

“And until Nigerians are able to do this, I don’t think we will get to where we want to go.”

Advising that the war against corruption should not be left to the government alone, Jonathan said both public and private institutions were also involved in sharp practice.

He advised that the country should stop creating an environment where people would be tempted to take what belonged to the public.

The President said “ When you talk about corruption, the private sector is involved; the public sector is involved; even individuals. But I wouldn’t want to mention names so that I will not be attacked.

“But I know that if collectively we don’t reward corruption, people would not be attracted to corrupt practices but when we all reward corruption, then of course, we will be tempted to go in that direction.”

He however said his administration would continue to focus on how to strengthen all anti-corruption agencies to enable them discharge their duties effectively.

Jonathan explained that his administration’s approach to fighting graft was targeted at building institutions that had the capacity to overcome corrupt influences.

This approach, according to him, will use the rule of law as a framework.

In this regard, he said the leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other-Related Offences Commission had been repositioned to ensure effective, efficient and transparent way of managing corruption and corrupt practices.

He said that a major principle underlying the implementation of his transformation agenda was the unwavering conviction that reforms must not be centred on individuals, no matter how strong they might be.

Rather, he said his administration recognised the fact that in order for reforms to be sustainable, they must be driven by strong, sound and effective processes and institutions.

On the management of government finances, Jonathan said that the nation’s budget was now being managed electronically.

He said, “For many years, the process had been manual – government officials carrying documents and files from one office to another.

“This manual system created opportunities for corrupt practices and also introduced many ghost workers and ghost pensioners to the payrolls.

“Today, we have put in place computerised systems and processes to manage the government payroll and also government finances.”

At the event, the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and a former Minister of Health, Prof Eyitayo Lambo, were conferred with a fellowship award of the NES.

The institute had only conferred its fellowship award on 38 distinguished economists in its 56 years of existence.

What are BHAand BHT?

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and the related compound butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are phenolic compounds that are often added to foods to preserve fats.

How do they preserve food?

BHA and BHT are antioxidants. Oxygen reacts preferentially with BHA or BHT rather than oxidizing fats or oils, thereby protecting them from spoilage. In addition to being oxidizable, BHA and BHT are fat-soluble. Both molecules are incompatible with ferric salts. In addition to preserving foods, BHA and BHT are also used to preserve fats and oils in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

What foods contain BHA and BHT?

BHA is generally used to keep fats from becoming rancid. It is also used as a yeast de-foaming agent. BHA is found in butter, meats, cereals, chewing gum, baked goods, snack foods, dehydrated potatoes, and beer. It is also found in animal feed, food packaging, cosmetics, rubber products, and petroleum products.
BHT also prevents oxidative rancidity of fats. It is used to preserve food odor, color, and flavor. Many packaging materials incorporate BHT. It is also added directly to shortening, cereals, and other foods containing fats and oils.

Are BHA and BHT safe?

Both BHA and BHT have undergone the additive application and review process required by the US Food and Drug Administration. However, the same chemical properties which make BHA and BHT excellent preservatives may also be implicated in health effects. The oxidative characteristics and/or metabolites of BHA and BHT may contribute to carcinogenicity or tumorigenicity; however the same reactions may combat oxidative stress. There is evidence that certain persons may have difficulty metabolizing BHA and BHT, resulting in health and behavior changes. BHA and BHT may have antiviral and antimicrobial activities.

In addition.. Debate surrounds the link of BHT and BHA to cancer risk, some food industries have voluntarily eliminated this additive from their products...

A list of food products and ingredients banned in several places around the world was released recently. Surprisingly, many items on the list are still available in Nigeria.

It is not unexpected that a host of the banned ingredients are disguised and passed off as “safe” and “healthy”. Here are tips for avoiding the offending ingredients.

Artificial food colourings – Today, many companies are removing artificial colours from their products, so a little research should help you find safe alternatives. Many common snack foods contain Yellow #5 in their ingredient list, but it’s not the only artificial food colour that is banned in other countries. Blue #1, Blue #2 and Red #40 may also cause health problems.

Brominated vegetable oil Banned in over 100 countries world-wide because it contains toxic bromine, brominated vegetable oil is used in many brands of beverage drinks to prevent the flavouring from separating and floating to the surface.

Bromated flour
In Nigera, many kinds of bread (notably the agege variety) are still made from bromate flour, which is banned in Europe, Canada and China, and linked to kidney damage, cancer and nervous system damage.

BHT and BHA
Japan, the United Kingdom and other European countries have banned these preservatives because they have been shown to cause cancer in rats. To avoid BHT and BHA, best option is purchasing food that is fresh and natural.

Arsenic
Though a known poison, arsenic was used in some chicken feed to make the meat appear fresher. Chickens raised for meat are no longer given feed additives containing arsenic, but that didn’t stop the European Union from putting a ban on it. If you eat poultry, particularly the frozen variety, make sure you know where it is coming from and how it is raised.

Education / ASUU Foresees Increase In Fees, If Demands Not Met by segzytemi(m): 3:11pm On Sep 11, 2013
Abakaliki - The Ebonyi State University Chapter of ASUU on Tuesday warned of likely increase in school fees if the demands of ASUU were not fully met eventually by the Federal Government.
The Chairman of the chapter, Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi, gave the warning in Abakiliki at a news conference on the current ASUU strike.
Idenyi said the fee hike would come when universities attempted to source money for their Earned Academic Allowances as directed by the Federal Government.
“We demanded for N500 billion but the government has only released N100 billion to university councils for infrastructure development in selected universities and another N30 billion for part-payment of Earned Academic Allowances.
“The government has asked various universities councils to source the balance.
“But the question is from where will the funds come if not through increase in school fees.”
According to him, the directive has distorted the report of the technical sub-committee on the report of the “Needs Assessment on Nigerian Universities.
“Government's partial implementation of our demand would generate series of problems in our universities, including differentials in school fees structure in public schools.
“The action would also cause migration of students and over-population of students in a particular school.”
He said that the directive might deny many people access to quality education
