The Chadians appear to be hollywood soldiers. They spend more time in front of the press/TV than behind machine guns facing Boko Haram.

i wonder if the fighting in damasak and Gamboru Ngala could have been tougher than the one at Bama, Baga, Madagali, Damaturu, Buni Yadi etc.

However, for most of our kinsmen, we either are not interested enough to even find out the truth or we are too interested in playing politics with every news item and using it to castigate the Government in power.

Well i hope when the elections are over we can learn how to support our own Government (irrespective of who wins)!!!

As for the Chadians, i hope they are ready to host Boko Haram after we have driven them out of Nigeria in the next few weeks!!

Please guys can we leave the insults out of all this.

First of all, i find it difficult to believe the President used over 2,000 policemen from the Lagos Police command (outside of his regular security detail) on the day he was in town.

In any case, the Nigerian Police Force has just under 300,000 men, even if they were shared equally by state (which does not make sense as the sharing should be based on population so lagos should have more than 1/36th share), Lagos would have over 8,000 police men. Where were the other 6,000men. How come none of them was close enough to the Lekki Ajah stretch to respond The reports of the robbery put the number of robbers at between 6 and 12, did we need the whole 8,000 police to checkmate them

The excuse is just so weak!!!

We are not even considering that Lagos has the highest concentration of other armed services apart from the Police. All the troops in Bonny camp, Ojo cantonment, Navy town, ikeja Cantonment etc. etc. were not available to safeguard the president, That we now had to devote again over 2,000 police men

Anyway Fashola is an intelligent man I am sure he must have been mis-informed. However, i am disappointed that he went to town with this argument without interrogating it adequately.

If you doubt it go look up pix of US troops in the middle of the battle for Hue, or Russian troops in the middle of the battles in Afganistan or in fact pix of South African troops on deep penetration missions against SWAPO.

Its about getting the job done not dressing up. When the job is done then you can dress up and go on parades.

Thank God the elections will soon come and go. Irrespective of who wins, then we can start thinking like on Country Again.

Your country, a Country that before now hardly produced a pin (militarily speaking), now produces within a 4 year span an APC (by the way the Igirigi is active in the North East, in fact some of the pix above are from the North East), Naval patrol vessels, a basic drone aircraft and yet it gives you no joy. Simply because Jonathan is your enemy and must be discredited.

To do that you run down the military and all their achievements, virtually celebrate the mindless terrorists at war with your country. Whether you know it or not you are bringing down your country and even if the messiah (GMB) came after may 29, this precedent you have set here will be difficult to stop or reverse.

My brother let us celebrate successes and humble beginnings together. It does not stop you voting for anyone you want if you feel GEJ has not done enough.

And for those shouting that we should be building space crafts and submarines, ask yourself how the parents whose child finally starts crawling at the age of 3 should react? Should they encourage the child? or respond by saying Olodo!!! Na now you dey crawl, see all your mates don dey run sef!!!

Let us be wise please. The elections will come and go! We cannot run down our Country just to gain political points, it is an expensive experiment.

Wrong my bro!! unlike most of you I dont 'school' in France Lolzzz. I dey Naija gan gan!

Forget the British Army, those are examples, which is why i also used examples of Biafra!!!

All i am showing is that diligent people do their jobs irrespective of the odds (Am sure if you work you can see examples around you everyday. Whether you are a police man or an engineer). Like the other 30,000 Naija troops fighting and dying for you and I to be able to sit in our homes and post 'hot air on our PCs'. Its their jobs.

This does not in anyway excuse our leadership which mismanaged the military for the last 20 years! But this soldier has betrayed those 30,000 other brave souls doing their jobs in the NE.

Thats all am saying!

Have thoroughly read and digested the accounts of this soldier. I have never been in the army and so my comments cannot be out of experience. However, i have followed military history and technology for over 20 years and so i have a number of opinions based on what i have seen/read from other military campaigns etc.

In general let me start by saying that the Nigerian Army has not been professionally run since the days of IBB when it became a legitimate govt tactic to under equip and under train the military for fear of coups. Gen Ihejirika admitted when he took over that there had been no training exercises for years before he came in, troops were forbidden to even warm the tanks and fighting vehicles lest it became an excuse for mobilising for a coup. thus many of those equipment were patently serviceable by the time the BH insurgency escalated late 2013. Bearing that in mind the soldier in question had not been involved in real military maneuvers since he returned from Sierra Leone.

1. It is obvious that the soldiers were already scared once they heard they were going to the North East (in the training camp), and so they were actually already defeated. All that was needed was for BH to show up and they were ready to run. Hence the insistence on Aircraft, helicopters and tanks to do the main fighting so that they would be left with only mopping up. Mean while the Boko haram you are fighting is armed mainly with what you guys throw away/abandon as you are fleeing.

2. He made mention of the enemy using anti aircraft guns against men. For the un initiated this is true. BH uses high calibre guns from 12.7mm to 23mm mounted on trucks against the Nigerian Army, and the effect is deadly. However, we have now gotten to where the Soldiers are so scared that the mere sound of those guns appears to make them flee. What then would the Army do if it was involved in a conventional war (the soldier mentioned conventional war as if he were wishing for it Lolz) where the other army is well armed like yourself. E.g. If we actually got into a war with Chad or cameroun, these same soldiers would face sustained pounding by artillery (105mm to 155mm) and motars (81mm to 120mm) sometimes for days before you see the enemy infantry. Whereas Boko haram's anti aircraft guns have a range of 1.5 to 2km, some of the conventional artillery have ranges of over 15km. In fact what would the Army do if they were bombed by chad's Mig 29 fighter jets? In summary, if you cant cope with insurgents, dont even talk of conventional war, you would be a non starter.

3. He talked about adversity on the war front. I will respond with two stories-
a. During the Falklands war in 1982, the British army attacked the islands to recover them from Argentina (you can google it if you are interested). The plan was for soldiers to be airlifted from one battle to another by helicopters. Most of the choppers were based on a container ship called HMS Atlantic conveyor. Unfortunately fairly early in the war, Argentine aircraft attacked and sunk the ship with all the helicopters on board. As a result the British Royal Marines and Parachute regiments had to walk over 80miles from the landing point at Port San Carlos to the main Argentine strong hold in the capital Port Stanley. They achieved this carrying over 120 pounds of equipment each! In sometimes freezing climatic conditions and while enduring stiff rear guard actions from Argentine commandos. They still did their job. They did not use this as an excuse to run away.

b. The Biafrans faced continuously superior odds sometimes with no food for days, but they stood and fought for 30 months before surrendering. The soldier talks about receiving N1,000 per day vs N5,000 per day. Is this why he ran away? by the way where was he spending this money in a war zone? The issue bils down to resolve, and sadly it speaks about how seriously we take our Country to start with.

4. He mentioned being issued 3 magazines (i guess of at least 20-30 bullets each). The adequacy of this is relative. In the British Army a combat load of about 6-7 magazines were customary. However, it would be nice to check how many bullets the Boko Haram fighters carry each, and you might be surprised. As an example we may revisit the case of the Biafran Army. Those brave boys were sometimes sent into battle with as few as 10 bullets each. However, their saving grace was that they mostly carried Mauser and Le Enfield bolt action rifles (what you might call 'cock and shoot') this tends to make the soldier try to make every round count unlike when you have an auto rifle. The other matter is of course the range of your weapon--- In the North East engagement ranges of over 500m are normal, whereas the Nigerian Army standard issue weapon the AK 47 is only accurate to about 250m (this is no short range, bear in mind that at 200m a man is about the height of a small pencil and very few soldiers can shoot accurately at that range irrespective of the weapon they are carrying). Thus the bottom line is fire discipline. Hold your fire until the enemy closes to within your accurate shooting range e.g. 150m and then give them hell!!! To achieve this you need disciplined soldiers, who are accustomed to being shot at. Disciplined soldiers who before hand have dug real deep dug outs with proper sandbagged positions, so that once your head is down, you are safe even from shelling by 155mm artillery (except of course there was a direct hit). Just consider, a force of 300 soldiers each with 30 bullets. If they achieve even a 20% hit ratio, each man would hit 6 enemy. I.e. Boko Haram would have taken 1,800 casualties. This is a bit theoretical, but you can see that 3(90 bullets) magazines (per man)well utilized would have stopped the BH in their tracks.

In summary, the work of a Soldier is not easy and it is clear many people in the Army today dont know what they are there for. When you live in free accommodation, enjoy free transport (as staff), free clothing for 5 days of the week, and draw a salary. You should DO your job when the time comes. Complain about the N4,000 short fall after you have won, and see if Nigerians will not fight for you to get your money.

Men are defined not by how they respond when times are easy, but how they react to adversity!!

IT IS INSTRUCTIVE THAT NOT ALL THE SOLDIERS IN QUESTION CHOSE TO RUN AWAY! Some who suffered the same issues as him are still diligently doing their job and are involved today in the crushing of this same Boko haram whom this soldier is making to appear invincible and immortal!!!

I rest my case sirs!

Good question but depends on who you are fighting. The biafrans carried bolt action rifles, am sure the malayan rebels were probably similarly armed.

The Liberian /Sierra Leone rebels on the other hand were well armed with AK 47s, and their fighting style was to keep out of sight close in and attack suddenly. This resulted in very short but intense firefights which required you to deliver a high volume of fire in a short space of time. The FN came a distant second best against the AK, which was shorter and easier to maneuver in the thick undergrowth and was more controllable in rapid fire mode.

onumaegbuikenna:

But if the FN is not so good at jungle fighting, then why did the British use it during the Malayan emergency, and the federal Nigerian army use it in the civil war.
Foreign Affairs / Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by SergeAlain: 9:29pm On Feb 20, 2015
Interesting picture.

Worthy of note is the soldier in the background. He appears to be carrying an FN rifle. This rifle had been phased out and replaced by the AK 47 on account of its unwieldy length for jungle fighting and its uncontrollable automatic fire compared with the AK (this draw back came to light in Liberia/Sierra leone, where the AK47's shorter range did not really matter on account of the close range nature of jungle warfare). Today in the North East, the short range of the AK has become a challenge and the FN with its range of up to 600m(compared with 300m for the AK) has become a life saver.

Good creative thinking.

For those of you who have been screaming about these vessels being fishing boats, consider this!!!

1. How many Navies in Africa field those larger vessels you are depicting? i.e. Frigates, Destroyers, cruisers or Aircraft carriers

2. For example, a cutting edge destroyer e.g. the US Arleigh Burke variant will set you back --- At least N400b about 50% of last year's total military budget. The new CGX cruisers planned by the US Navy would cost you about N640b each.

3. This does not consider the fact that you would then need to maintain them.

4. In deed the total budget for defence which we love to scream about i.e. about N1b last year includes Salaries, building and equipment maintenance, fueling of vehicles and assets, other over heads plus any new equipment. These salaries and other overheads make up close to 50% of the total budget.

So actually what you have left to buy equipment for the Army, Navy and Airforce is just about N500b in all. If you shared it equally, the Navy actually has only about N160b for any new equipment it wants to buy, from new uniforms, to new barracks to new ships!!!

Do you still want an aircraft carrier? Guys PLEASE lets try and be serious in our discussions!!!

What is wrong with us in this Country? The worst thing is that some people actually like this comment.

I will not insult this guy (even though i think he would deserve it) because it is against my principle. Also he might genuinely be a young person who needs enlightenment.

dharay99 please note that even though Boko haram does not exist in the sea, over 90% of our national earnings come from oil in the sea. This oil is currently not properly safeguarded because the Navy does not have enough vessels to police them 247. Also kidnapping and piracy on our high seas have exceeded what it used to be on the Somalian coast. Therefore we absolutely need vessels such as these.

Politics aside, if other leaders had shown this sort of foresight, we would not be in the situation we find ourselves in the North East. Moreover bear in mind that you might ultimately thank GEJ if general Buhari wins. This is because you might just need these vessels to check mate the Ijaw boys when they rise up.

I hope this clarifies things to you.

The thing about interviewing individual soldiers is that you may be speaking to the worst coward of the entire army. While this guy is moaning, his mates have recaptured Madgali, Michika, Hong etc. and are closing in on Gwoza the gate way to sambisa.

On this same Nairaland you can go to pix on the African Military and see the true state of equipment of the Nigerian Armed forces.

The truth is that the Nigerian Army military has been neglected for over 20 years (mainly from IBB's time). At the start of this conflict, the Army had no special forces per se, No significant terror/anti insurgency training, little or no real combat experience (since most of the Liberia/Sierra leone Veterans have left the service.
There are many things GEJ/ his generals could have done better. However, we can say the same of any inexperienced/unprepared army going into a battle from the US (in Vietnam) to the Russians (in Afghanistan and Chechnya). Even during the Liberia war, there were many grievous mistakes but it was a military regime and there was also no social media so information did not get to us in Nigeria. Today every mistake is exposed in the harsh glare of sunlight.

For those who are sworn GEJ enemies, this is a stick to GEJ/PDP/ FG with. But this doesn't really matter because even if the war was progressing well these persons would still see nothing good about GEJ. For those who are genuinely concerned it is important to note that GMB will not go to the war front himself, he will rely on these same generals and soldiers. If he has to import equipment, it will still take money and time. There is no magic to these things.

Please for your information:

1. Power Generation has been privatized and is in private hands as we speak. Even the new plants Government is completing under the NIPP are also in the last stages of being sold. Any investor today can build his own power plant, and several are already doing this as we speak.

2. Transmission is still in government hands. However, the operational management is in the hands of an experienced Canadian Company called Manitoba Hydo International. There are moves to privatize this in the near future.

3. Distribution has been fully privatized and is already in private hands.

The venerable Prof should stick to legal matters where i hope he is well versed. if the General said this i would not be bothered.
Hearing this from the only educated member of the tag team scares me to my bones.

First. We are crying about creating employment, and we have just created a policy which has succeeded in attracting investors to build assembly plants in Nigeria, and create thousands of QUALITY jobs. Prof has just told us APC intends to reverse that process and leave the investors who believed our policies stranded mid stream. Can you imagine how difficult it will then be to attract any other investors in any sector at all? This will simply confirm to the foreign investors that our policies are not worth the paper they are written on.

Second. On the power issue. Does Prof even realize the sector has been totally deregulated and a competitive market implemented? Several IPPs are alive and well in Nigeria today, including at least 3 belonging to LASG. The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has on its website over 100 companies licensed to do just this i.e. modular power, with over 80% already operational and supplying to industrial players (these are naturally more attractive than residential consumers who it would be a struggle to collect your monthly bills from).
All the electricity distribution companies are ACTIVELY (i cant stress this enough) looking for credible investors to do embedded power plants within their local grids. This addresses the issue of National Grid mentioned before on this thread.

In any case, non of these solutions are short term and the main bottle neck in any gas power solution right now is access to gas. There are no easy answers and APC will come to discover this when/if they win.

These people are even more uninformed than i first thought!

Nigerians please interrogate any change story before you accept it OOOH! From frying pan to fire is not a nice experience OOOH!
It is easy to clamor for change but please bear in mind that anyone you vote in now is there for at least 4 years. By the time you find out how clueless these guys are, you would have to wait for/waste another 4 years!!!

Normal range with sniper rifles.

No sir, the normal effective range of the Dragunov is 800m. hitting a man sized target at 985m with such a rifle is real good shooting. Of course its not world beater stuff, but real good shooting non the less.
