I generally don't approve of Atiku (for personal reasons), but i must commend the maturity he displays with this reaction. I dont know what APC thinks they will achieve by denigrating the very seat they hope to occupy. Like they say, the new wife must beware because the same cane used on the first wife is hanging safely in the roof waiting to visit its wrath on the new wife at the opportune time. |
Na wa o for dictatorial tendencies. APC wont let the opposition campaign in Lagos, Rivers and the North. God help Nigeria if APC ever came into power. That would be the end of any opposition politics. All opposition politicians would be thrown into jail or driven into exile. |
Na wa OO! APC states are not allowing opposition parties campaign in Lagos, Rivers, up North and who knows where else. God help Nigeria if APC ever became the ruling party. All opposition politicians would be run out of town! |
Madam Oby, I respect you as an intelligent and fearless woman. However, you tend to like the limelight just a bit too much for my liking. When someone does something wrong, and decides to change his ways (even if its late in the game), you commend his right action and quietly point out that it would have been better if done earlier in the game. That is how neutral persons who mean well behave. Leave the soldiers, IDPs and populace in the North East to determine if this last minute visit is enough to sway their votes (i doubt it is), but at least complement the Head of State for making a brave if belated visit to the NE. That would be the more respectable thing to do. |
Some of the comments here make me wonder the average age and exposure of the respondents. yes it would be nice to have agriculture back as Nigeria's highest earner of export proceeds, but it is a long journey and you need heavy investment to achieve it e.g. - More fertilizer plants - setting up marketing boards to protect farmers from shocks - training up extension workers to train the farmers on newer improved farming methods etc. -Establishment of processing facilities to ensure farm losses are minimized. Trust me it will require over 6-8 years to get Nigeria back to an agro based country. The sad bit is we are hoping Buhari can do all this, meanwhile even the little i have articulated here is several times more detailed than any blueprint he has shared with us. GMB please share your blueprint otherwise all you are making are wishful statements and empty promises. I dont know how we are expected to support a man who cannot articulate how he wants to achieve change. More scary is that fact that his campaign team has so many intelligent people, why is it so difficult to articulate a blueprint ? People please note! Leadership of a Nation is too important to be gambled with!! It is better to stick with a good development plan slowly implemented, than to rush into a change vehicle that has no articulated plans. |
emeka94:Well said my brother. Also important. How will you quell corruption in the States and LGs (almost 50% of the total pie)? Considering these are elected officials, many of whom have immunity? |
Too many comments here are escapist, sentimental and slightly childish. What Agbaje said is exactly same thing Bola Ajibola talked about when he asked for the signing of an MOU by PDP and APC. In truth, it will require a miracle for the Ijaws to accept the way GEJ has been hounded out from day 1 (especially with the violence up North making it virtually impossible for him to succeed). When you say oil prices will decline to zero, even if that is true, what of Natural Gas? How do you plan to generate power in the short to medium term without gas? All the gas to the Power stations come from one long pipeline system, which can easily be sabotaged anywhere from Rivers to Delta State. At that point GEJ wont even be the issue, as he would have returned to a peaceful life in Otuoke. If you imagine the Niger Delta Warlords are now weak, ask Festus Keyamo what he saw at the hands of Tompolo. Regarding the ability of the Nigerian Military to quell this, consider Boko Haram will not also just vanish into thin air after FeBUHARI as you call it (except you are acknowledging that they answer directly to GMB and will lay down their arms once he enters Aso rock). This means the Nigerian Military could as well be fighting on two fronts. Given how effective they have been in the North East, does this possibility fill you with confidence? |
Henry120:Chief Henry, I feel your pain, but understand there is always a role for soft skinned transport vehicles in every army. Only a handful of very rich countries can afford to put all their infantry in APC type vehicles. Even the US Army with its huge resources still uses the Humvee (even with the MRAPs recently introduced). However, the crime is in the tactical naivete of soldiers who consistently allow themselves to stumble into the firing line still mounted on softskinned vehicles. The idea is to use the soft skinned vehicles up to the forming up areas and then dismount to attack. The issue is that the NA still uses Hilux vans for fire support, whereas they need to mount heavier cannons on their Cobra, Igirigi, MT-LB Apcs etc. for the fire support role. |
The 'long gun' as you call it is the immortal originally Belgian FN (Fabrique nationale) rifle. The standard issue weapon of the Nigerian army from time immemorial. It only gave way to the AK 47 over the last 15-18 years. Thus it has been relegated to second tier units and training establishment. However, its still a very capable Automatic rifle. craziebone: |
What is the import of all this? Let me try and break it down. 1. It is questionable how honest Buhari is if the processes that propel him to power are not above board (Am not even talking of the Emir of Gwandu incident involving suitcases of USD under his watch in the 80s). 2. Even in the event that Buhari is more honest than most other politicians (i actually believe he is), how can he actually fight corruption when he gets into power? How do you ignore the corrupt practices of the people who put you in power and punish other corrupt people --- e.g. Amaechi has already admitted to giving Wike N3.5b for a project which was never executed, yet he has instituted no probes on him, has not involved EFCC---- nothing --- this that not complicity in corruption? 3. The people funding this campaign, how will they recover their money? IF YOU LIKE GMB---- Just say so!!!! Afterall you are entitled to your opinion!!!! BUT DONT DECEIVE YOUR SELF THAT IT IS BECAUSE HE CAN FIGHT CORRUPTION, B'COS HE CANT, his hands have been tied by virtue of the character of persons he is dining with. Just my opinion!!! |

There is this assumption that Buhari can wave corruption away with a magic wand? The following questions would be nice to consider? - Given the amount of money APC has spent for this election, is it realistic to think they will not recoup their investment? How will they do it? - People like Amaechi and tinubu who have put in billions, how would they get their money back? Or do we think they are just being patriotic? - With the heavy platform which is bringing GMB to power, how much control would the party give him to pick his ministers? If he does not pick the ministers, can he fire them if they dont perform? - How would Buhari convict corrupt parties? Via the courts or through a tribunal? - If you used the courts wouldn't you need to clean and reform them first (given that the courts are riddled with corrupt judges)? How long would that take? - How would Buhari manage the National Assembly? - How would he cope with the PDP states? They would not necessarily be cooperative? - How would he manage the continued importation of petroleum products? Considering that refineries cannot be repaired overnight? Will he remove oil subsidies? - Do the APC have any economic reform programs, if they do why havent they shared it with us? These questions are not to say Buhari is not a good candidate, I just write this to make most Nairalanders (many of whom are wearing rose tinted glasses and expecting immediate turn around after APC wins) understand that the phase from 2015 will be a battle. There will still be many bitter pills to swallow before the economy turns around. So anyone telling you anything different is not telling you the truth!!! |
This Prof's Letter and the related conclusions just prove what i have always said. The anti GEJ campaign is largely about the North wanting power back by all means (If you think it is about change, APC should field Fashola as Presidential candidate with Oby Ezekwesili as VP and see if the entire North will not leave APC en mass). The anti corruption song and change theme are simply convenient masks for their main game plan. The Yorubas being the smart people they are have taken advantage of the situation as usual, and have positioned to benefit most from the zone they believe will win i.e. the North. In deed they have gone one better and hold most of the aces, with a weak Northern presidential candidate who can be manipulated (as shown in Buhari's first term and his time as PTF head). This means that while Buhari leads, the Yoruba's (through Tinubu) will actually be calling the shots, after the 8 years of Buhari/ Tinubu rule, the VP (Osibanjo) will then run for president and give the Yorubas another 8 year stretch. Only question left is what will the North do about it, are they as stupid as we think to let a weak president fritter away the North's 8 year stint? Especially given that they might not see power after that for another 16 years (i.e like 2040). In deed the silence from the North right now (since the VP was picked and during the whole horse trading before it) is deafening, i guess we shall see very soon what hand they will play. They might actually decide it pays them to just wait 4 years and get an untainted and uncompromised 8 year tenure through a strong Northern president they can trust. Who knows!!! |
Who ever told you privatisation is a magic wand. The buyers have only been in place for less than 1 year and you are screaming. How long did it take for GSM costs to come down and for service to spread nationwide? Close to 10 years. Privatisation is still 1 million times a better option than government operating businesses!!! DonaldGenes: |
It is becoming more and more apparent that GMB will be a very weak president. His antecedents show it both as a military head of state (when Idaigbon ran the shop), and as head of PTF. Those were when he was young. Today he is 72 (or more) he is likely to be even weaker (Right now he cant even stamp his feet and select a vice of his choice). The leadership of APC understand this, which is why the tussle for VP is 10 time more vigorous and rancorous than the tussle for the presidential ticket. They understand that anyone who is VP to Buhari will actually be the Head of State. I.e. de facto ruler for 8 years (2015 - 2023) and then actual president for another 8 years (2023 - 2031). VERY ATTRACTIVE!!! Worth dying for actually!!!! The events of today and the ripples thereafter shall make interesting viewing. |
Sure. The fighter jets that are currently winning the war in the North East abi? grandstar: |
If you are right, then maybe Jonathan is not as clueless as you think. Rhozabeth: |
My guy you are making too much sense. Do you school in France? I have been telling everyone who cares to listen that an average power plant of 1,000 Mw (about 10% of what we need right now) will take 3-4 years from design to operation, and will cost about $1b. However people prefer populist ranting and promises to fix problems overnight. vanunu: |
Just a reminder your beloved PDP has used way more devious tactics than this to attack the APC, That worked out so well for them huh? My brother please bear in mind this is not a school debate, and no one here (i believe) is walking away with any prices. Therefore lets tell ourselves the truth. Are you saying there is nothing scary about a political leader opening canvassing for votes on the bases of ethnicity? Arent you scared this whole 'change' mantra is just a drive for the North to return to power. If it truthfully does not bother you thats fine. However, it bothers me very much. dragan: |

The reason state police has not been accepted by those who oppose it is simply political, nothing to do with resources. Dont forget the Federal police will not disappear. They will function side by side. Federal police would typically be based in the main cities e.g. state capitals, while the state police will penetrate into the villages and hamlets using the advantage of better knowledge of the ground. All of the other heavy infrastructure e.g. forensic labs, heavy equipment etc would be held by the Federal police and the State police in the Larger richer states thus you could have world class labs in Kano, Kaduna, Jos etc., and the State police in places like Dutse can send samples for analysis to those modern labs and pay for the lab services till they can afford to build their own. Also Multiple states can collaborate to share infrastructure e.g. Taraba, Adamawa and Gombe could theoretically own one forensics lab located in Mubi etc. Long and short, no problem is unsolvable if we have a shared goal. bushdoc9919: |
Ha Ha This man who --interfered in state affairs willy nilly including overseeing many unjust impeachments -- encouraged Ladoja to continue to make payments to the late God Father of Ibadan (Adedibu) -- committed war crimes in two locations within 8 years in Odi and Zaki Biam -- interfered in all attempts to privatize parastatal under the FG leading to so many botched transactions (Ajaokuta, Delta Steel, Ikot Abasi Aluminium smelter, NITEL, etc. etc.) --Ignored the rise of extreme Islam by terming the sharia issue a political matter -- Doing absolutely nothing to rearm and re-train the Armed forces for 8 good years, leading to us now facing the Boko Haram scourge with a totally un-prepared military. This man is just hungry and needs to make some money from the sales of his book. He should thank his God that there was no social media during his time!!!! He would have received 10 times the fire GEJ is getting now. |
MAYOWAAK:LOL Na wa O. Which Civil Service are you eulogizing? The same corrupt civil service which has been over seeing land deals and inflating contracts in Lagos since 1960? The man was a former perm sec, dont you know no corruption can fly in any ministry within the perm sec's involvement ![]() He will win the elections for sure, but i pity Lagos State under a former civil servant. |
Great move abeg!!!! make we know how many we dey abeg. No need to carry partners wey de work against us. |
Muscomide:Some of the comments on these blogs show how little people understand the structure of the Nigerian Government. Actually most people who say GEJ has not performed and Fashola is wonderful have no clue what yardstick should be used. E.g. you mention Education being poor under the PDP government. Well actually education is 95% administered by the States. All Primary and secondary schoools (except the Unity schools) are run by the State. For instance if you want to evaluate Fashola's performance for education, check out Lagos state's performance in the last NECO. This is same for Health. The States manage public health. The Federal Government only runs the Federal Medical Centers in each state, all general hospitals, health centers etc. are run by the States. So please lets be careful how we evaluate and rate FG vs State Govts. |
I think we should be careful. It is Ok for the younger members of this blog to imagine that religion and ethnicity do not matter any more. However reality is different. How do you think Christians would have reacted if the type of religious massacres we have been experiencing happened under a muslim-muslim leadership?? Incidentally can you imagine what the North would say if what APC was suggesting was a christian-christian ticket, even if the Christians were northern Christians? Religion may not matter in the SW where brother and sister can be from different religions, but in the North (especially middle belt where xtians are being massacred everyday) and the SE/SS it is a game changer. Let us be guided! Very guided in fact!!! |

Some times, we Nigerians deceive ourselves by thinking breaking Nigeria up is the solution to all issues. Let me tell you the corrupt people will still be corrupt in Biafra, odduduwa land or Arewa land. Any charllenge you cant fix in Nigeria, which magic wand will you apply when you are in ur region. |
Most probably these are Nigerian Army MT-LB Armored Personnel Carriers returned from UN duty (say in Sudan) due to greater need at home. So calm down am not sure anyone (but the mis informed reporter) thinks they are new. As to whether they can work, note that the sea air is very corrosive, once an armored vehicle has seen action it is covered with tiny scratches all over, once this is exposed to sea air during shipping, those scratches will become rusty. The only reason they are hitching a ride is to move faster than they can move on tracks and save our roads from the effects of tracked vehicles. |
oilykid: I think its high time we give this virgin hunters their own country with their capital in Maiduguri since the military can't bring them to their kneels to avoid wasting of innocent lives.Rip to the fallen officersI see! How naive can you get. No wonder you guys have been aiding and abetting cowardly Soldiers who have refused to fight. You imagine abandoning Bornu to them will satisfy them?? If you support the soldiers to shirk their responsibility to fight for the Country, why do you thin Boko Haram will stop in Bornu state? Why wont they maintain their advance till they get to Nembe and Brass? Dont you realise you need to fight them and defeat them right there in bornu state to prevent them attracting more islamic fanatics from all over the World and rolling over the rest of the Country? If you doubt this, go and do some research on what is happening in Iraq with ISIS. Wise up young man!!! |
HAH: I know most people on nairaland are young people but in all modesty am not a youth again, I don't know you but I don't want to open my cover to you,Well my brother that is really sad. I hope they are ready to die for their villages and their families when Boko Haram captures the whole North East and enters other Geopolitical zones. Any one in doubt of that should take a look at what ISIS is doing in Iraq. If they think they can run away to their villages and escape the war, who are they hoping will stop the BOko haram for them?? |
ogtavia: I am telling u m brother,it baffles me,most of dis Boko Haram didn't go proper rigorous training like d soldiers did, they were all recruited haphazardly.Abt d ambush, look there are moles everywhere, even d army, under normal circumstances, boko haram doesn't av d proper intelligence to face nigerian soldiers, why do u think the Americans who came to help didn't achieve much, there efforts might have been stifled, consider this, gunmen walk into a school, kidnap a large of kids, kill some and for over 120 days,no positive news have been heard, consider it occuring in d US,u get d picture don't u....its a parody,a movie still in its credits scene, more will unfold in time to come,Nigerian soldiers didn't die dis much when they were sent to liberia, sierra leone, libya, mali, sudan etc...except d randy ones who died from HIV/AIDS,but here our soldiers have become so expendable that, when 30 soldiers lose their alives against 50 dead BHs,questns are nt asked...its a pity,I just pray,it doesn't get to where, everyman will have to stand up,take up arms and fight for his life, family and land,if it does, unless I am forced,I will gladly leave this nation with my family and go elsewhere, yes, there is no place like home, but home is what u make of it....I am so pissed off right now...Hahaha!! You guys evidently think this is a tea party, and that Boko Haram are a bunch of girl Guides? Well welcome to reality. These guys are shooting live ammunition. Casualties are unavoidable in every war. Go and look up the casualties the Russian Army suffered in the war against Chenchen freedom fighters, or their casualties in the war in Afghanistan and you will realise what i am saying, and bear in mind that the Russian Army is 100 times better equipped than our army is. Fighting a bunch of doped and deluded fanatics who are looking forward to death is not easy!! Please show some respect to people who have volunteered to stand for us in these dark times. |
nijanigga: RIP but. They've all died in vain, because to die for Nigeria=die in vain. There is something distinctly wrong with a lot of us here. What exactly is Nigeria? Do you think Nigeria ia GEJ and his family? Well sorry you are wrong, Nigeria is You, me and everyone else on this blog as well as outside. It just happens that we have selected GEJ to rule us (purposely or by default i.e. if you did not vote). If you dont like him, go and vote him out at the next election. As for those very brave young men who have paid the supreme price, bear in mind that if nobody is willing to do what they are doing, Boko Haram will be in Lagos within the Month, and we will all soon be dieing for our families (i hope you don't also think dying for your family is dying in vain?). The choice is simple, stand together as a Country for once and die for one another, or wait to die one family after another as Boko Haram arrives at a town near you. The Choice is yours!!!!!! |
