@otuwe cosign u jo, smoking weed helps a lot, the point is not smokin too much lol, grin

Mr redfox, dat was humour, its funny u cant detect humour when u see it cos u'r named after a famour comedian, lol, on the real, suggest a particular inspirational book, but its clear our poster's issue is prolly self esteem.

@ poster, the key is, the worst that can happen is u not getting the job, u will not die, its good u already know ur weak point, a nice smile, or a well calculated attempt at humour goes a long way in breakin the ice, make it interesting, ur interviewer is also prolly bored as hell.

dress well, dont be buga'd by the work environment, dats enuff to kill ur morale,

if u r reallly nervous, mention it to the interviewer, just as subtly as possibl, its worked for me before, he/she may take it easy on u,

as nervous as u may be, try to speak smartly no matter wat.
Career / Re: Institute Of Chartered Economists Of Nigeria (ICEN) by seunallday: 9:09am On Aug 04, 2009
smiley smiley smiley i couldnt agree more, i also studied economics and i read the institute's syllabus back in school, it was basically all we had learnt in school, no value added of anyy sort, so wat makes u chartered if u r only learning wat made u an economist in the first place, economics is not a professional course by nature true and to be sincere,,,ICEN is nottin but a waste of time, if u wanna be a "chartered economist" go do a masters and a phd and then u even have to specialise in one of the numerous branches of economics so at the end of the day u may be, say a "chartered moneterist economist" if there is any such thing, cos new branches keep coming up every day, ever heard of behavioural economics?

Nice one all.

Thanks tkb417 for being incisive!

But what really saddens is that the while other countries are learning from the past mistakes and putting
appropriate measures on ground for a more effective regulation,we here at home are just sitting down doing nothing. No body is talking about getting the system more regulated.

Seundally said the government cant allow this to happen,I bet if the full force of these exposures come down, the government will be dead helpless and at the end of the day we all pay the price ! who wants to buy the dollar for 500 naira!!!!!!!!!

Career / Re: Corporate Finance/Investment Bankers/Stockbrokers Forum by seunallday: 9:13am On Jun 30, 2009
@TBK, nice points, but dont forget that throughout this period, NSE had an incentive to turn a blind eye, cos volume was hitting 7 billion then, and for an inst. dat makes its money from commissions, gaskiya, well, all dat is wat i call a messy past, a lotta pple got thier hands burnt and unfortunately like u said, it was the guys dat came in too late.

i really would blame everybody and nobody for the crash, cos it was a constellation of issues dat ruined the market, but the market aint dead yet, we all have to move on from there and look for the next killer stock. grin

on the banks still postin impressive results, bros, dat is wat baffles me, dont forget dat all dose american banks were still postin impressive results, hidin liabilities until the final bubble burst, i feel a lotta dem r not givin full disclosure of their liabilities and bad debts, and the bubble may finally burst, but the economy cannot afford dat so im sure they have CBN's and the govt's full support since our president's "development plan" is fully anchored on the financial sector.

@redfox, u must have registered since january if u plan to write september diet, u'l spend 10k for reg, about 15k for exemptions, 20k fro the exams, bsc econs, u will be exempted from 2 courses in l1 and do 3, go to thier website and dl the syllabus for more info, www.cisnigeria,com
Career / Re: Corporate Finance/Investment Bankers/Stockbrokers Forum by seunallday: 9:45am On Jun 29, 2009
CIS is currently undergoin some revamping, not heard about the change in syllabus but i know, they are trying to pass an amendment bill to change their name to Chartered Institute of Investment and Secuirites to accomodate of finance and investment professional, also they have switch to a credit system whereby u only need to rewirte the papers u failed, prior to this, u have to write the whole level if u fail more than one paper or u get below a certain mark, they also have an affiliation with ACIIA so students and graduates can take dat exam with some exemptions,

on the STock excahnge crash and NSE's competence or lack of, i wouldnt put it on the regulatory body's nect, cos we have to understand this is a largely "market forces" market, why would an inst. dat mkaes more money when high volumes are traded want the market to crash?

Let everybody gets informed by your knowledge.Cheers.

been a while, good to see things are still happenin over here, had to get me nysc clearance done,

neways, heard ogun state has a bond issue coming out pretty soon, sure they wanna model lagos and akwa ibom (i tink) financing infrastucture with debt instruments, seen that first hand, was part of a team that went to pitch a proposal for their international/cargo airport, seen a bit of commitment on thier part but its pretty hard for PPP to thrive because from wat i saw there was a political undertone, fiscal instability is a threat to any PPP especially for a project with a payback period of about 20years, as in this case, but i hope it works for them, and for us in naija, we need a well balanced socio-capitalist mix wit each bloc checkin and balancin as they see fit, dunno d intricacies of political economics tho,

wit capital restructuring, ave done a bit of research and came up with two terms - stock split n reverse stock split. am just wondering what positive effect that will have on a coy?

a stock split is a share mgt technique done by increasing the no of shares in a company and reducing the share price for example 10000 shares of 1naira each could be split to 20000 shares of 50k each this way there is no effect in share capital, phb did this some time ago, a reverse split is the direct opposite, increasing the share price and reducing the no of shares eg 20000 units of 50k can be reverse split to 10000 of 1naira each,  think ecobank also did this recently

the effects of these on the the coy itself is nada pretty much because a stock split neva changes its share capital, on divivdend policies maybe, because coys pay dividends per share and thus the higher the no of shares outstanding the higer the amount of dividend payout,

also a stock split creates an impression that the price of a 'good company' has fallen really low, dat is to investors unaware of a split, so it makes the price more attractive, lotta coys do it for dis reason.

Our bid to have a society might still take a while cos we need about 38 charterholders in this country b4 we can be granted our request. As of now, we can boast of 24. I heared they only have 7 charterholders in Ghana.
we aint doing badly cos if you merge the candidates that wrote both June and last december exams, we had about 900 candidates!!
Thats a lot and im hopeful, within the next few years,we'll cross that line and then have our status confirmed!

dont get, there only 24 charterholders in naija? tot they would have been more

Hi Guys,
Please don't be embarrassed by my question, this is an opportunity for us to learn, What is PE?

no embarrassment in learning brov, PE means Private Equity, means fund raising or financing options for companies that are not listed on the stock exchange

omoteebabe:

but if project financing is still somewhat under the CF, what are mortgage coys meant for?

secondly, can we safely say asset mgt & pension adminstration is d same?
although i know pension contribution is divided into mandatory & voluntary contribution and from ur xplanation funds coming into assets mgt is voluntary.

finally, what does capital restructuring really entail?

sorry am askin too many questions, i would have google search it but the reply does not capture the nigerian picture. tanks

u seem really interested, i d advise u to go to wikipedia or investopedia, these things are pretty universal in structure so u will get a sound idea,

mortgage coys are companies that finance shelter, houses land and the rest, they provide financing services for houses more or less, project financing is different from mortgage, prolly the only tin they have in common is d repayment tenor, lllonng teeerrrm.

pension administration is different from pension managerss, pfas collect these pension funds and the managers turn em into more wealth tho some firms are both managers and admins, safe to say pfm is a form of asset mgt since it also involves collection and mgt of wealth,

the nature of pensions and the laws governing em make it mandatory for the employers and the employed, asset mgt aint compulsory.

capital restructuring, now i 'l leave dat to jarus, can type dat long.

Investment Banking is cool, brain tasking, energy consuming and really rewarding
as for T-cann
you need to be all analytic, energic and be ready to spend long hours and weekends working on your mandates
some coys dont employ if you dont have the Mscs, First Class and the rest but its not really hard to figure

Just get yourself enrolled in CFA and get the level 1 passed and i can bet, you can enter one of those coys
if you have ACCA, ICAN and co with ur B.sc, you can hit up places like Stanbic BGL and co and they will be ready to take you in
But bros, the work can worry ooo

so guys, lets talk, CFA guys are in town.
We are probably gonna have our 9ja CFA soooooooon grin grin grin

bros got a 2.1 from lag, economics, CIS level 2, gunnin for CFA nxt June, wat do u tink my chances are,

on the CFA issue, i hope soon enuff oo, cos na dubai moni dey chase me from december ooo, grin grin

tkb417:

well said bro!!

i dont think it will take them many years to compete with the others but i see other smaller investment banking outifts springing up and taking a chunk of what would have been originally IBTCs meat.

lets see, the market is becoming bouyant and im gettin tipsy
who says, i may be in Stanbic tmr if they can match my wage grin

i tink ARM is a silent major player as well, plus i hrd theyr one of the few nt very exposed to margin, hrd they jst bought a stockbrokin house so they should be aiming for the top too,

as far as stanbic ibtc is concerned, i dont tink they lost their edge, i tink they got more consmer banking edge and theier operations are just more diluted, plus ibtc asset mgt, and esp ibtc pensions are big time players,

diamond bank also has a strong investment arm from wat i hear, hrd george soros is interested in d joint
