My yealy rent is about 22% of my annual income. I live in a 2 bedroom apartment in Alimosho LGA, Lagos. The environment is decent and I look forward to becoming a landlord in the same area. All the other tenants knew somehow that I don't belong among them. Living below your means is possible sometimes but the pressure is high & I wasn't "really comfortable" either. All depends on you & your goals.

Nigeria will humble you..the cheap house you're looking for does not have vacancy in the location where you work, now what do you do? and even the pay for the job can't meet your needs 50%..the system is happening to all of us, that's just the truth.. how many jobs pay over 100k today

Politics / Appeal Court Reduces Ex-reps Member, Farouk Lawan’s Jail Term To Five Years by SeunOluwafemi: 2:35pm On Feb 24, 2022
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday reduced the sentence of former House of Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, to five years

Lawan was convicted by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on June 22, 2021, on a three-count charge of soliciting bribes, agreeing to accept bribes and actually accepting a $500,000 bribe from a businessman, Femi Otedola.

The High Court of the FCT, in a judgment by Justice Angela Otaluka, sentenced Lawan to seven years on count one; seven years on count two, and five years on count three.

But in a unanimous judgment on Thursday, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, led by the court’s President, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, quashed Lawan’s conviction on counts one and two.

The court held that the prosecution failed to prove both counts relating to demanding for and agreeing to accept a $3 million bribe from Otedola.

The appellate court found that the prosecution was only able to prove the third count relating to his accepting bribe of $500,000.

The court then acquitted Lawan on counts one and two (on which he was sentenced to seven years per count), but convicted him on count three (on which he was sentenced to five years).

The judgment was on an appeal by Lawan.

Details shortly.

Politics / Shina Peller Proposes Bill To Scrap NSCDC, Gives Reasons by SeunOluwafemi: 6:13pm On Feb 02, 2022
The lawmaker representing lseyin/ltesiwaju/ Kajola/lwajowa Federal Constituency in Oyo State at the House of Representatives, Shina Peller, has proposed scrapping of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps. Peller proposed that the Nigeria Police Force to take over the responsibilities of the NSCDC. The lawmaker made the proposal to the House via the National Security And Civil Defence Corps (Repeal and Transition) Bill 2022, which passed first reading on Tuesday. The bill seeks to repeal the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (Amendment) Act 2007, establish a transition management committee to superintend over the NSCDC, develop regulations and implement procedures for the transfer of assets and personnel of the corps to the Nigeria Police Force, and other related matters.

In the bill, Peller noted that “fragmentation of security resources across multiple competing agencies is counterproductive.”

The lawmakers also noted that the mandate of the NSCDC “has now become a duplication of the Nigeria Police Force,” adding, “this has led to avoidable conflicts.”

Peller stated, “Every single function of the NSCDC can be done or is being done by the Nigeria Police Force,” while citing “waste of scarce resources,” stressing that the annual budget of the NSCDC is almost N100bn.

“The assets and personnel of the NSCDC will be absorbed by the Nigeria Police. So, no loss of jobs,” he noted.

The NSCDC, which was a voluntary organisation, was converted to a national security outfit by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

The bill came at a time when the National Assembly is considering or has passed bills to establish more security outfits such as the Peace Corps and Vigilante Group of Nigeria.

Politics / Newsbiafra: Nnamdi Kanu Took Advantage Of Igbos’ Naivety, Anger – Okorocha by SeunOluwafemi: 1:58pm On Feb 01, 2022
Senator Rochas Okorocha has described Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, as a smart man who took advantage of the Igbo’s unhappiness and naivety.

Okorocha made the remark during a chat with Arise TV while commenting on IPOB’s secessionist agitation in the Southeast.

Okorocha insisted that most Southeast youths are not secessionists but angry Nigerians railing against the system, making them easy targets for IPOB’s agenda.

“The issue of IPOB is very controversial and they are the agitations of some young men seeking for relevance who even disrespected me during my tenure as a governor; I don’t see them as secessionists.

“They had been told that the rest of the country hates them. Nnamdi Kanu is a smart man who got these people to think as he wanted,” he said.

Politics / Boko Haram Will Soon Recruit Out-of-school Children – Obasanjo Warns Buhari by SeunOluwafemi: 12:51pm On Nov 26, 2021
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned that Boko Haram might soon recruit out-of-school children if the government fails to return them to their classrooms.

Obasanjo said this while addressing participants at the presidential youth mentorship retreat held at the Youth Development Centre, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo blamed security challenges in the country for the increasing rate of out-of-school children.

He lamented that about 14 million children who ought to be in school are on the streets; therefore, the situation can worsen the nation’s security situation.

He said, “A situation today where we have 14 million children that should be in school that are not in school, does anybody need to be an oracle to say that 10 years or 15 years from now, those will be where you will recruit pure Boko Haram.

“Therefore, if you deal with Boko Haram by stick today, in a few years’ time, the situation will be worst because we are talking about security, it will be worst.”

The former president added that when it comes to security and poverty, the solution should start from education.

Politics / Ayiri Emami Arraigned For Allegedly Stealing Olu Of Warri’s Crowns - SR by SeunOluwafemi: 11:59am On Nov 25, 2021
Nigerian Businessman, Ayiri Emami Arraigned for Allegedly Stealing Olu of Warri’s Crowns Worth N2billion.

Prince Oyowoli Emiko and Prince Omatsuli Emiko were declared wanted for breaking into the private apartment of Olu of Warri in Delta State and stealing the crowns.

AWarri Chief Magistrates’ Court has Arraigned Ayirimi Emami, the deposed Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom for allegedly stealing two royal crowns belonging to Warri Kingdom and said to be worth N2 billion.

The Nigeria Police Force had in August declared two sons of the late Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli Godfrey Emiko, wanted for stealing the royal crowns.

According to reports, Prince Oyowoli Emiko and Prince Omatsuli Emiko were declared wanted for breaking into the private apartment of Olu of Warri in Delta State and stealing the crowns.

It was also learnt that the Federal High Court in Benin City, Edo State, had issued warrants of arrest for both men. A special police gazette had also declared both men wanting.

It was issued by the Force Criminal Investigation Department Zone ‘5’ Headquarters, Benin City on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali.

However, Ayirimi was on Wednesday charged along with others now at large.

They were said to have allegedly committed the offence around 11.30 pm on March 30 this year in the residence of the Olu of Warri, the charge sheet with No: MW/178 C/ 2021 revealed.

The statement reads, “That you Chief Ayirimi Emami (m) and others now at large on 30th of March, 2021 at about 11:30 pm at Olu of Warri Palace, Warri did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit, Burglary and Stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap C21 Vol. 1, Laws of Delta 2006.

“That you Chief Ayirimi Emami (m) and others now at large on 30th of March, 2021 at about 11:30 pm at Olu of Warri Palace, Warri, in Warri in Warri Magisterial District, with intent to commit a felony broke into a dwelling house of the Olu of Warri and thereby committed an Offence Punishable Under Section 411 of the Criminal Code Cap C21 Vol. 1, Laws of Delta 2006.

“That you Ayirimi Emami (m) and others now at large on the 30th March, 2021 at about 11:30 pm at Olu of Palace, Warri, in Warri Magisterial District did steal two crowns valued at Two Billion Naira, properties of Itsekiri Kingdom and thereby committed an Offence Punishable Under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap C21 Vol. 1, Laws of Delta 2006."

Meanwhile, Ayirimi pleaded not guilty to the three charges, while his lead counsel, Mr. Emmanuel Uti, urged the court to grant his client bail.

The defence lawyer said the accused person was willing and ready to appear in court any time he was called to appear.

Police prosecuting counsel, SP Sunday Irabor, asserted that the discretion of granting bail lied with the court. He, however, called for stringent bail conditions, stressing that the sureties must be reliable.

Chief Magistrate Diejomaoh granted the accused bail with two sureties and N2 million each.

The sureties, she ruled, must be on Grade Level 15 in the civil service and they must provide their passports and photographs as well as national means of identification.

The case was adjourned till January 19, 2022, for hearing.

Travel / Nigerian Government Launches New Electronic Passport In UK, Vows To Tackle Delay by SeunOluwafemi: 2:22pm On Nov 24, 2021
Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, stated that Nigerian passport was the highest affirmation of Nigerian citizenship.

The Nigerian government has launched a new enhanced electronic passport to improve passport application process for Nigerians at home and in diaspora.

Speaking during the rollout of passport at the Nigerian High Commission in London, United Kingdom, the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, stated that Nigerian passport was the highest affirmation of Nigerian citizenship.

He added that it was the responsibility of the Nigerian government to provide the passport without any stress and within a reasonable period.

“What we have come to do here is symbolic of the core mandate of the Ministry of Interior and indeed, the Federal Government of Nigeria – affirmation of citizenship integrity,” the minister said.

“The Nigerian passport is the highest affirmation of Nigerian citizenship. It is therefore our responsibility to provide the passport without any stress, within a reasonable period. As we are all aware, there have been huge challenges from passport administration, shortage of booklet to touting and an economy of corruption built around it.

“These challenges have persisted for too long and a lot of people have become cynical while other have taken them as normal and then rolled with it. But I come from a tradition of problem solving in public administration. I do not believe that any problem is insurmountable, so we are going to solve all the problems associated with passport administration and we are already succeeding.”

Revealing the features of the new enhanced Passport, Aregbesola said it was a huge improvement from the standard Passport that was introduced back in 2007, with more sophisticated security features, making it one of the most secured passports in the world.

“The Enhanced e-Passport is a great improvement on the Biometric Passport technology which Nigeria adopted in 2007 as a strategic step towards curbing forgery, impersonation and other forms of frauds associated with obtaining travel document under the old Machine Readable Passport regime.

”We are aware that technology rules the world and we are keeping abreast of the latest development in the field. Over the years, the Nigeria Immigration Service had worked assiduously and in close synergy with Messrs Iris Smart Technologies Limited to develop and implement Passport reforms that are in tandem with international best practices, including extant International Civil Aviation Organisation’s Standards and Regulations,” he said.

Politics / N656bn Bailout: Buhari A Caring Leader, PDP Govt Didn’t Help States – BMO by SeunOluwafemi: 2:11pm On Nov 24, 2021
The Buhari Media Organisation says the fresh N656 billion bailout to 36 states confirms President Muhammadu Buhari is a caring leader.

A statement on Wednesday by the Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, said the latest facility is the fourth in six years.

Each state will get N18.2 billion to help them meet financial obligations and budget support due for repayment.

The funds will be disbursed in six tranches over six months, with a 30-year tenor, and a 2-year moratorium at an interest rate of 9 percent.

BMO noted that the presidential gesture was unprecedented and commendable.

“Not even in the oil boom years of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) did the country witness anything close to this”, the statement read.

It recalled that the first bailout was within the first few months of the Buhari administration when about 27 states could not pay salaries and pensions.

“Another was in 2016 while a third was disbursed in 2017 with President Buhari specifically insisting that Governors should prioritize payment of salaries,” it added.

BMO said the most recent shows Buhari “is so compassionate that he once asked some Governors how they sleep at night knowing that workers salaries had not been paid”.

The body advised Governors to use the N18.2 billion judiciously on projects and programmes that would be beneficial to the people.

Politics / Newshow N2bn Was Siphoned From FIRS Under Guise Of Duty Tour Allowance – EFCC by SeunOluwafemi: 2:05pm On Nov 24, 2021
Published on November 24, 2021 By Fadehan Oyeyemi

An operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ijeoma Matilda on Wednesday narrated to a Federal High Court in Abuja how N2 billion was allegedly siphoned from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) under the guise of duty tour allowance.

The operative made the revelation while testifying for EFCC in the trial of Emmanuella Eteta Ita, Head of Stakeholders Unit of the FIRS and Surestart School Limited before Justice Folasade Giwa Ogunbanjo.

She told the court that sometime in November 2015, EFCC received an intelligence report alleging that the former Coordinating Director of the FIRS, Mr Peter Hena conspired with the first defendant using the staff of the unit to siphon money from the FIRS through Duty Tour Allowances, DTA, to the tune of over N2bn.

Led in evidence by EFCC lawyer, Mr Ekele Iheanacho, Matilda who is the fourth witness in the trial explained in detail how the anti-graft agency waded into the matter and found a mouth boggling alleged fraud.

“We went ahead to investigate the first defendant, (Emmanuella Eteta Ita), she denied receiving any money from Peter Hena.

“She however admitted that Peter Hena gave her a bag to give to the then EFCC chairman, Mr. Tunde Fowler, the contents of which she said she did not know.

“We further investigated the first defendant’s United Bank for Africa (UBA) salary account, where we discovered various payments from FIRS, for various reasons. We also found out that between 2015 and 2017, she had received a total sum of N277.5m.

“She received another N173, 346,219.50 for DTA and entertainment expenses.

“From the above sum, we discovered that she transferred N145.8m between 2015 and 2017, to the account of the second defendant (Surestart School Limited).”

The witness further disclosed that the first defendant could only account for N32. 4m during reconciliation of her account.

“We also verified some of the receipts, belonging to Lomein Express Ltd and discovered that 26 of the documents amounting to N76.4m were forged as confirmed by the owner of the company.”

Also testifying, the 5th prosecution witness, Mr. Ibom Uche, a Director of Accounts with the FIRS told the court that sometimes in October 2020, the EFCC sent a letter addressed to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, which was minuted to him to certify some documents, which he carried out.

He narrated to the court the procedure for funds approval, processing, and disbursement from his office.

Under cross-examination by Benjamin Ogbayi, counsel to the first defendant and Andrew Hassien, counsel to the second defendant, the witness pointed out that he only worked based on the instructions.

Justice Ogunbajo has however adjourned further hearing to November 26, 2021.

Losing weight while in the spotlight has many perks. Celebrities have the best trainers, chefs, and nutritionists at their disposal. Not only that, but they also have the means to pay for any treatment they may need, no matter the price.

However, not everything is so peachy. Aside from having all these advantages, they also have to put up with the media following and scrutinizing every part of their journey. The media’s takes are often unforgiving and crass, and it seems like every decision celebrities make is somehow the wrong one.

Knowing how to balance between the good and the bad side of losing weight in the spotlight is, it seems, the key to success. It is not an easy journey, but making it is indeed possible, and these twenty celebrities are proof of that. Read on to see their amazing transformations.

1. Jonah Hill
We all remember Hill’s breakout role in Superbad. His portrayal of the sweet teenager Seth made the cinema world fall in love with him, and his chubbiness became his trademark. That is why his appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival turned heads left and right.

He appeared on the red carpet in a dashing black suit and, more importantly, weighing forty pounds less. The entire world was shocked by his abrupt transformation. However, they recovered soon, and they only had words of praise for Hill’s weight loss journey.

Although Hill was obviously happy and flattered by the reactions, he opened up about another aspect of it all. He was shocked at how many more offers and roles he was getting after he lost weight. It wasn’t something he had expected, and it made him think about how superficial Hollywood really is.

2. Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin is surely one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. His career spans three decades, and he has already been proclaimed a legend. For the longest time, it seemed as though nothing could ever get in the way of him enjoying life to the fullest.

But everything changed after a routine checkup. His doctor told him he was pre-diabetic and that diet and habit changes were in order. He took this advice seriously and lost almost 30 pounds in record time. Now he is healthy, he looks great, and his weight loss journey is seen as one of the most inspiring in Hollywood.

3. Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks started modeling when she was just fifteen years old. Even at such a young age, she started breaking barriers for African American models. She was the first black woman to grace the covers of GQ and Sports Illustrated.

However, as soon as the paparazzi caught sight of Tyra being a few pounds heavier than usual, the media’s scrutiny became too much. She hit the gym immediately, and now she is looking fitter than ever. However, her experience made her speak up about the inequality and unfairness of the industry toward women, something she is vocal about even today.

4. John Goodman

A businessman, Sylvanus Ukpong, has sued telecommunication giant, MTN, for barring his line.

Mr Ukpong, in the writ of summons filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja,on March 12, 2021, noted that MTN, by its action, blocked him from accessing partners and potential customers.

In the court documents exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, the claimant told the court that his Civil Construction and Agro-Allied Company based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, relied largely on telephone calls to stay in touch with business partners and solve business-related challenges.

He said the action of the network provider, had therefore, cost him millions of naira in the last four months.

He prayed for, among others, in his suit, an order directing the defendant, MTN, to unblock his line with immediate effect.

He also urged the court to award general damages of N50 million in his favour and against MTN, and another N5 million to cover for filing and prosecution of the suit.

‘How it happened’
He stated he had been using the MTN postpaid line 0803-746-6663 since 2008 and, was enjoying his “solemn relationship” with the network provider until early November 2020 when he was barred from making calls.

He was initially paying up to N100,000 as his monthly call credit to MTN Nigeria, and later reduced it N40,000, Mr Ukpong said while recalling his long-standing patronage of the network provider.

But he said in early November 2020, he was barred from making calls over an alleged N31,560 airtime bill incurred in October, a bill he said had been off-set by his recharge card vendor, Ime Esema, whom he made electronic bank transfer to.

He said, prior to the incident, he had submitted a type-written letter to the MTN Nigeria branch office at 40, Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, requesting that his line 0803-746-6663 be migrated from postpaid to prepaid.

He said his request was rejected on the grounds of the company’s claim that it could only accept handwritten letters.

“On that same October 15, 2020, I submitted a hand-written letter to the MTN office, but they also rejected the letter, saying that there was no internet network for them to process my request.

“On November 2, 2020, at 6.37p.m., I received the following text message from MTN, ‘Dear Customer, your Oct 2020 bill is N31,560. Please pay on or before Nov. 5, 2020 to keep enjoying our services. Thank you.’

“On November 3, 2020, I recharged my MTN line 0803-746-6663 with N15,000 and on November 4, 2020, I recharged the line again with N30,000, thereby bringing my total recharge to N45,000. I expected this amount (N45,000) to clear up my N31,560 and for the MTN line to be left with N13,440 to enable the process of the migration from postpaid to prepaid,” the claimant stated.

Mr Ukpong said his letter requesting migration from postpaid to prepaid “was accepted later but not granted.”

He added that his follow-up call to the MTN customer care line 180 at 7.36 a.m. on November 5, 2020, yielded no result, as the official who answered the call told him that “there is nothing we can do here, you have to go to the Uyo office” before hanging up on him.

According to him, this was followed by a call from another official of the company who introduced himself as his account officer and persuaded him not to migrate from postpaid to prepaid.

“But I insisted that I needed to migrate the line for proper management of my personal finances. He promised that the matter was going to be treated that same day,” he added.

‘Line barred’
Mr Ukpong said he realised his line had been barred two hours after speaking with the MTN official.

“Two hours after speaking with the MTN official on November 6, 2020, I noticed that I was unable to make calls with my MTN line 0803-746-66630. I was able to receive calls, however. It was obvious to me then that my line had been barred by MTN.

“I immediately called the MTN customer care line 180 to make a fresh complaint that I have been barred from making calls. The official who picked the call told me that I was indebted to MTN and that was why they barred me from making calls.

“I explained to her that my October bill from MTN was N31,560 and that I had recharged the line with N45,000 vouchers which was enough to clear the bill, she then said it must have been a “technical error” and that it would be corrected between 15 to 24 hours. I told her that my business was going to be so negatively affected if I could not make calls for that length of time,” Mr Ukpong explained to PREMIUM TIMES

He said all his efforts to get MTN to resolve what its official called “technical error” had been futile while his businesses had continued to suffer many losses.

“I have sent two emails to MTN requesting that they should furnish me with information regarding how much I have recharged my line between November 1 to November 6, 2020, but up till now MTN is yet to respond to it,” he said.

‘Line unbarred’
Mr Ukpong said he engaged the services of two law firms, who equally wrote to the defendant on the subject, but got no response from the telecom company.

MTN, in its first reaction to PREMIUM TIMES through its spokesperson, Funsho Aina, last Saturday, asked this reporter to send an email through the official channel.

Mr Aina acknowledged the email and promised to “review and revert ASAP” but there has been no official reaction from MTN so far.

In another interview with this reporter on Tuesday morning, Mr Ukpong said his barred line had been unbarred, a development which reportedly came two days after this newspaper reached out to MTN and chronicled the complainant’s struggle to get the latter to do the needful.

This reporter again reached out to Mr Aina on whether MTN was willing to compensate the complainant or not.

Responding, Mr Aina said the company “was still in talks with the complainant.”

“Did he also tell you that he can now use his line? So, we are making progress. We have made progress from what we used to have and we are still having series of conversations with him.

“This ‘thing’ is building blocks,” Mr Aina said.

Politics / Court jails Professor for manipulating election result in favour of Akpabio by SeunOluwafemi: 3:13pm On Mar 25, 2021
A High Court in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State on Thursday, sentenced a professor of the University of Calabar, Peter Ogban, to three years in prison for announcing false election result during the 2019 general elections.

The professor of science who served as the returning officer in the senatorial election in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District in 2019, was said to have manipulated results from Oruk Anam and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas.

The prosecutor, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, told the court that Prof Ogban altered the results of the election to favour the All Progressives Congress, APC, against its main rival, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The result was manipulated in favour of the APC candidate, Godswill Akpabio who was seeking reelection to the Senate.

Daily Trust reports that in a previous court session, Ogban had told the court how the results of the election were falsified to give the APC an unfair advantage over PDP.

The PDP’s candidate, Chris Ekpenyong, a former deputy governor in Akwa Ibom State, defeated Mr Akpabio in the election which was gripped by pockets of violence.

Akpabio was subsequently appointed as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs by President Muhammadu Buhari.
