MATCH PREVIEW Louis van Gaal must contend with a selection headache for his side's trip to Watford on Saturday after revealing that Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney will miss the match though injury and illness respectively. The Manchester United manager's plans for the trip to Vicarage Road had been disrupted by an ankle injury sustained by Michael Carrick while on duty with England and because Marouane Fellaini, who has been deployed as a forward, has still not recovered from a knock sustained in the UEFA Champions League victory over CSKA Moscow. Van Gaal has hinted that James Wilson, who has made one league appearance this season, as a late substitute in the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal, is in line to play some part against Watford. Jesse Lingard and Memphis Depay are also in the frame to go up front. "He can play but he cannot play a whole match because he doesn't have the rhythm of the game," he told MUTV. Lingard will be hopeful of a third start for United, after scoring his first BPL goal against West Bromwich Albion last time out, while Depay has watched United's last three league matches from the bench. If United win they will leapfrog Manchester City, Arsenal and Leicester City, who are not in action until later on Saturday, into top spot. But a new-look United attack will have their work cut out as Watford's solid start to their top-flight return has been forged around a miserly defence breached only 12 times in as many matches. Watford have no new injury worries and captain Troy Deeney says Man Utd's visit to Vicarage Road will be a great occasion for the promoted side. "Now it's a different manager, a different style of football, but it's still Man United," Deeney told Premier League TV. "It's still one of the biggest clubs of the world coming to little, old Watford. "So it's going to be a great occasion for the fans, and for someone like myself. Not too long ago I was paid £10 a week to play, so if I'm now playing against Man United I'm just going to enjoy it." Match Appointments Referee: Robert Madley Assistants: M McDonough, M Perry Fourth Official: A Taylor Match Facts - Manchester United have won the last nine matches in all competitions against Watford, with the Hornets’ last win coming back in September 1986, 1-0 at home in the league. - Wayne Rooney has scored three goals in two appearances against Watford in all competitions. - The Hornets have suffered just two defeats in their last nine league outings at Vicarage Road, winning four and drawing three. - Man Utd have lost one of their last eight Barclays Premier League matches (W5 D2). - Louis van Gaal’s side have now gone five matches in all competitions without conceding a goal (555 mins). They last enjoyed a longer run of clean sheets between the end of 2004/05 and start of 2005/06 (six matches in total). - Wayne Rooney needs one more goal to become Manchester United’s outright second- highest-scorer in all competitions. He is currently tied with Denis Law on 237, 12 behind Bobby Charlton. - Man Utd have the best chance conversion rate of any team in the BPL this season (20%). 1 Like |

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Manchester United Vs West Bromwich Albion (2 - 0) On 7th November 2015 by seydam21(m): 8:10am On Nov 04, 2015 |
MATCH PREVIEW Chris Smalling wants Manchester United to prove their attacking prowess against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday. Louis van Gaal's side have scored two goals in their last five matches in all competitions, with their previous two Barclays Premier League outings against Manchester City and Crystal Palace ending goalless. As Van Gaal has been quick to point out, United have made progress in defence - keeping more clean sheets (7) than any other team in the league this season - but are lacking a cutting edge at the opposite end of the pitch while Tony Pulis' West Brom side have not conceded in four of their five BPL away matches in 2015/16. Smalling acknowledges it will be difficult to break Albion down but he still feels United have the creative players needed to make an impact in the final third. "Tony Pulis has made them very solid and they don't concede many goals, so we're going to have to break them down," he told www.manutd.com . "If we can get an early goal, I think you may see the floodgates open." Wayne Rooney was on target in United's 1-0 UEFA Champions League win over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, the England captain now level with Denis Law on 237 goals for the club. That header also ended a barren run that had seen Van Gaal's team go 404 minutes without scoring. Rooney will have fond memories of coming up against West Brom in the BPL, having played a role in 11 goals (seven scored by him, four assists) in his past seven starts against them. But Pulis has seen his side defeated only twice in their last nine top-flight fixtures on the road. Chris Brunt, who should recover from a knock in time to feature against United, praised the role of team spirit in guiding them down that path. "Over the last few weeks we've found a bit of form together but obviously the result was disappointing on Saturday [a 3-2 defeat against Leicester City]," he told the Birmingham Mail. "We can trust each other to do the jobs to the best of our ability and that's all you can ask for anywhere on the pitch." West Brom, who were 1-0 winners at Old Trafford in last season's corresponding fixture, will be without former United goalkeeper Ben Foster (knee), but Jonny Evans and Darren Fletcher are expected to play. Antonio Valencia (foot), James Wilson (knock) and Paddy McNair (abdomen) are doubts, while long-term absentee Luke Shaw will not feature. Matteo Darmian will also be unavailable as he is suspended. Manchester United (from): De Gea, Romero, Johnstone, Valdes, Jones, McNair, Rojo, Smalling, Valencia, Varela, Blind, Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera, Lingard, Mata, Pereira, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Young, Depay, Martial, Rooney, Wilson. Match Appointments Referee: Mike Dean Assistants: H Lennard, M McDonough Fourth Official: N Swarbrick Match Facts - Wayne Rooney has scored seven goals and assisted four more in his last seven Barclays Premier League starts against West Bromwich Albion. - West Brom have lost just one of their last five league matches against Manchester United W2 D2 L1. Those two victories have come in their last two trips to Old Trafford. - Manchester United have lost just one of their last 13 BPL matches at Old Trafford (W9 D3 L1), but that defeat was against West Brom. - The Baggies have won five and lost just two of their last nine league matches on the road. - Man Utd have kept more clean sheets than any other side in the BPL this term (seven). - Only one team has managed to score against West Brom in the Baggies’ five league away trips this season (Crystal Palace). 1 Like |

MANCHESTER UNITED - CSKA MOSCOW PREVIEW: VAN GAAL DEMANDS END TO GOAL DROUGHT The Red Devils have not impressed in front of goal recently, and the Dutch manager wants the side to improve ahead of the visit of Russian side Louis van Gaal wants Manchester United to use Tuesday's home Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow as a turning point for their season. United secured a 1-1 draw in Russia thanks to Anthony Martial's header in their most recent European outing on October 21 but have since recorded three 0-0 draws in a row, results which have seen them lose ground to Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table and exit the League Cup on penalties to Middlesbrough. With his side again struggling in attack in a stalemate with Crystal Palace on Saturday, Van Gaal wants to see a reaction when the Russian Premier League leaders visit Old Trafford. "When I see their characters, I don't think they have doubts about that quality," Van Gaal said of his attacking players. "It can change in one match - let that be CSKA, because we need victory. "I have to hope we score against Moscow again because then we are talking in a different way." CSKA, meanwhile, secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ufa on Saturday to equal the Russian top-flight record of 36 points from 14 matches. Nigeria international Ahmed Musa is himself looking to end a three-game goal drought and, with only goal difference currently separating his side and United in Group B, he hopes to do so this week. "The most important thing is the three points. It's football - sometimes you score, sometimes you don't," Musa said. "I'm sure I'll score again soon. I hope it'll be in the Manchester United game." United expect to be without Antonio Valencia (foot) for the game, while Memphis Depay is still struggling to shake off a knock suffered against Middlesbrough. Bibras Natcho (head) and Vasiliy Berezutsky (thigh) are both doubts for CSKA boss Leonid Slutsky, who was confirmed as Russia's coach for the Euro 2016 finals this week. United are still looking for a first ever home victory against Russian opposition and only a second in nine matches against any side from the country. Their last home clash with CSKA came in the 2009-10 group stages, when Valencia scored an injury-time equaliser to secure a 3-3 draw.

Match Preview Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew is set to be boosted by the return of Yohan Cabaye and Jason Puncheon when Manchester United visit Selhurst Park in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday. The Eagles lost their third successive match in all competitions when they were beaten 5-1 by Manchester City on Wednesday, with Cabaye and Puncheon both absent from the League Cup tie. Pardew also hopes to have more striking options back for United’s visit, and he told www.cpfc.co.uk : "We now get ourselves focused on the game on Saturday and need to make sure we get a few bodies back for the game. We need to put our strongest team out against them. "We have some problems with a few as Jason Puncheon has been ill and Yohan Cabaye has a knock but fingers crossed they will be back for the weekend. "Connor Wickham and Marouane Chamakh are training plus we have our fingers crossed for Pape Souare being back on Saturday." Man Utd have won 10 and drawn two of their 12 BPL meetings with Crystal Palace, the longest unbeaten run from one current top-flight team against a single opponent in the competition (level with Southampton’s unbeaten run against Palace). The Red Devils also exited the League Cup in midweek, suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat to Middlesbrough at Old Trafford, but they are just two points off BPL leaders Man City. Defender Chris Smalling has called for a response from the League Cup exit. "We had quite a lot of chances but it just didn't break our way," he told MUTV. "I think we'll take the disappointment but we need to turn our attentions immediately to Saturday, because it's another big game, an away game, and we need a response." United are still without Paddy McNair (abdomen) and Luke Shaw (broken leg). Crystal Palace (from): Hennessey, McCarthy, Speroni, Dann, Delaney, Hangeland, Kelly, Mariappa, Souare, Ward, Bolasie, Cabaye, Guedioura, Jedinak, Ledley, Lee, McArthur, Mutch, Puncheon, Sako, Zaha, Bamford, Campbell, Chamakh, Gayle, Wickham. Manchester United (from): De Gea, Romero, Johnstone, Valdes, Darmian, Jones, Rojo, Smalling, Valencia, Varela, Blind, Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera, Lingard, Mata, Pereira, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Young, Depay, Martial, Rooney, Wilson. MANCHESTER UNITED - MIDDLESBROUGH PREVIEW: The England Under-21 international came close to scoring the only goal against Manchester City, and the former Blackburn defender has been impressed by the youngster Jesse Lingard might have been entering Manchester United's League Cup fourth- round tie against Middlesbrough as a derby-day hero. The 22-year-old came on for only his fourth senior United appearance during Sunday's 0-0 Premier League draw against rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford and was closest to breaking the deadlock, volleying Anthony Martial's lofted pass against the crossbar with five minutes remaining. Lingard started United's 1-1 draw against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League last week, and team-mate Phil Jones was impressive with the midfielder's contribution against City. "It looked like it [Lingard's effort] was in but that is the luck you need sometimes," Jones told United's official website. "Maybe it could have hit the bar, it could have come down and there could have been somebody there to tap it in. "But I thought he did great when he came on and it would have been a contender for goal of the season if it had gone in." Marcos Rojo could be in line for further action when Middlesbrough visit the north west - the Argentina international having returned, like Jones, from fitness problems to start the past three matches for Louis van Gaal's team. "I thought Marcos was terrific [in the derby]," Jones added. "His passing was great, he was a threat going forward and he was solid defensively as well. It was a top performance." United may find themselves tangling with another Manchester City man on Wednesday night in the form of Bruno Zucuilni - the Argentine midfielder having completed a loan switch from the Etihad Stadium to Teeside on Monday. The 22-year-old, who spent time on loan with Valencia and Cordoba in La Liga last season, offers a welcome boost to Boro boss Aitor Karanka's midfield options. Adam Forshaw sat out the 3-1 weekend win at Wolves with a minor injury, while Grant Leadbitter and Adam Clayton are both a solitary booking away from triggering a suspension. Stewart Downing and Albert Adomah are likely to come into Karanka's thoughts for starting places at Old Trafford after they came off the bench in Middlesbrough's comeback at Molineux. Former England winger Downing curled home a wonderful free-kick to complete the scoring, although he is still nursing a rib injury. "I took a whack in the ribs at Cardiff; I'm not sure if there is a break there or not, but I'm told there is nothing you can do so I just decided to get on with it," Downing told Boro's official website. "Sod's law, I took a whack soon after I came on against Wolves, but I'm glad to have played my part. It was the perfect time to score." Head To Head The teams last meet in the 2008-09 campaign and the Red Devils won all three of the meetings over the course of the season, including the League Cup. Goals from Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-Sung fired United to a 2-0 win at the Riverside, while a goal from Dimitar Berbatov decided the contest at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Giggs won the third round League Cup match 3-1 at Old Trafford in their first clash of the season. Over the course of history, United have dominated the fixture winning 62 of the matches, compared to Middlesbrough's 33, while 28 of the encounters have ended in draws. |

Man Utd v Man City: Schweinsteiger excited by derby German looking forward to first Manchester derby and facing ex- Wolfsburg star Kevin De Bruyne Man Utd v Man City | #MUNMCI | Preview and stats >> Two former Bundesliga stars are relishing the opportunity to make their mark on the Manchester derby when third-placed Man Utd welcome their city neighbours to Old Trafford on Sunday. Bastian Schweinsteiger ended a 17-year association with Bayern Munich to join United in July, while Kevin De Bruyne has continued the form that made him the German top flight’s player of the year last term while at Wolfsburg since becoming City's record signing. Despite his lengthy spell with Bayern, Schweinsteiger rarely got a taste of cross- town rivalry due to the ailing fortunes of 1860 Munich, who share a ground with the Bundesliga champions, but have not competed in Germany's top flight since 2003-04. "I am definitely looking forward to the derby against City," the Germany captain told United Review. "I think it is something very special and we should be very happy that we have two big clubs in one city that are also playing in the Champions League. "I remember when I was in Munich we were always looking for that, but the other team at 1860 Munich didn't play so well. "We were always looking for a derby but it was sadly not possible. Here, we can play lots of derbies and I am very happy about that." Schweinsteiger faces an anxious wait to see whether he will be selected in Louis van Gaal's customary central midfield two having been substituted at half-time in Wednesday's 1-1 UEFA Champions League draw against CSKA Moscow. Schweinsteiger is looking forward to his first experience of a cross-city derby By contrast, De Bruyne is set to be central to Manuel Pellegrini's plans to avenge City's 4-2 defeat at Old Trafford in August, having scored five times in seven starts for a team without the considerable attacking firepower provided by Sergio Aguero (hamstring) and David Silva (ankle). The 24-year-old Belgium international is keen to pile the pressure onto United with a victory that would open up a five-point gap between the two, while bringing further cheer to supporters who have instantly warmed to him. "In the end it is just three points, so if you win or lose there it doesn't change a lot," he said. "But if we can win there we will put a little bit of pressure on them. "For the fans it is one of the biggest games. If we can win there, you know how it goes, our supporters will talk to them for half the season until the next game. "Hopefully, we can win this one because it is a big deal for them." Despite his free-scoring exploits, De Bruyne insists he has not allowed himself to daydream about being a potential derby day hero. "Not for a moment," he said. "It doesn't matter really, in the end. "If I am involved in the game I will be happy. It doesn't matter if you score or do nothing; the most important thing is to get the three points." Samir Nasri, Fabian Delph (both hamstring) and Gael Clichy (ankle) remain unavailable to Pellegrini, who must ponder whether to restore captain Vincent Kompany to the starting line-up and make a call between Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna at right- back. Luke Shaw (broken leg) and Paddy McNair (liver) are the only remaining injuries for Van Gaal to deal with, although the 170th Manchester derby comes too soon for Ashley Young (calf). |

MATCH PREVIEWS Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has selected 20 players in his squad Manchester United head to Russia in good form with five wins from their last six games, but they face a CSKA Moscow side that is yet to suffer defeat at home this season. Louis van Gaal has taken 20 players to Moscow with Champions League Group B delicately poised - all four teams in the group are on three points after two games. Wednesday night's match marks the start of four games in 10 days for Manchester United, as they welcome Middlesbrough to Old Trafford in the Capital One Cup either side of Manchester City (home) and Crystal Palace (away) in the Premier League. CSKA Moscow are five points clear at the top of the Russian Premier League after their 3-2 win over mid-table FC Ural on Saturday. They are yet to suffer defeat in their domestic league so far this season, and got back to winning ways in the Champions League with a 3-2 win over PSV Eindhoven at the Arena Khimki after opening their campaign with a 1-0 away defeat to Wolfsburg. Team news Manchester United will be without James Wilson, Ashley Young and Paddy McNair for the fixture. Young (calf) was injured against Arsenal before the international break while McNair is still recovering from the abdominal injury he suffered while playing for Northern Ireland. Paddy McNair is still recovering from an abdominal injury and is not available on Wednesday Striker Wilson (illness) trained on Tuesday but has been left at home by manager Louis van Gaal, while Luke Shaw (ankle) is a long-term absentee. CSKA Moscow do not have any injury concerns. Opta stats Leonid Slutsky's side are top of the Russian League with 32 points from 12 games - the only dropped points came in draws with Zenit St Petersburg and Lokomotiv Moscow, but they have only won three of their last 14 Champions League matches. CSKA Moscow winger Zoran Tosic had a spell at Manchester United in the 2009/10 season, making five appearances. Wayne Rooney's hat-trick against Club Brugge was his first European hat-trick since his Manchester United debut against Fenerbahce in 2004. Rooney has scored 36 European goals for United - two behind Ruud van Nistelrooy's club record. Antonio Valencia was in training for Manchester United ahead of their Champions League tie against CSKA Moscow Manchester United have lost three of their last five away games in all competitions. Going further back, they have won just nine of last 26 Premier League games on the road. Anthony Martial has scored four goals in eight appearances for United, including three in five in the Premier League, but he has not scored in his last four in all competitions. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Everton Vs Manchester United (0 - 3) On 17th October 2015 by seydam21(m): 12:42am On Oct 17, 2015 |
MATCH PREVIEW Everton manager Roberto Martinez is a keen admirer of Wayne Rooney but hopes he falls short in his bid to be fit for Manchester United's visit on Saturday. Rooney missed England's final two UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania after receiving a knock to the ankle in United's 3-0 Barclays Premier League defeat to Arsenal at the start of the month. The United and England captain remains doubtful for this weekend's trip to his former club as United seek to arrest a poor run of form at Everton. Everton have won the last three meetings between the sides at Goodison Park without conceding a goal and Martinez's hopes of maintaining that record have been bolstered by the likely return of defender John Stones. No new injuries have surfaced for Martinez following the international break, although Leighton Baines remains around two weeks away following an ankle problem. When asked about Rooney's return of one BPL goal this season, Martinez told reporters: "His contribution is a bit more than scoring goals. "If you want my thoughts, I would prefer it if Wayne Rooney doesn't play. From an opposition point of view, I think Manchester United are a better team when Wayne Rooney plays. "He brings a lot more to his performance that just hitting the back of the net." Louis van Gaal's United went into the international break off the back of the loss at Emirates Stadium, as Arsenal scored all three goals inside the opening 20 minutes. Morgan Schneiderlin will hope to regain a starting place in midfield, with Bastian Schweinsteiger having hurt his thigh while away with Germany. United were beaten 3-0 at Goodison Park in April, but Martinez is not paying much attention to previous meetings. "I think records and previous results mean very little - what's important is that we respect immensely this Manchester United side," he added. "A couple of weeks ago when they went top of the league, that was a real statement of intent. "Manchester United have a settled side now and have become really strong in what they do."
