Match Preview

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson does not believe his side's thrilling victory over Manchester United earlier in the season will have any bearing on this weekend's return fixture at Old Trafford.

Pearson's men stunned United when they recorded a 5-3 win in their Barclays Premier League encounter at the King Power Stadium in September.

United opened up a 3-1 lead in that fixture, before Leicester clawed their way back to claim a memorable three points.

Leicester's season hit a downward curve after that triumph, as they went 13 matches without a win.

Recent victories against Hull City and Aston Villa, together with progression to the fifth round of the FA Cup, have helped raise the Foxes’ spirits, although Leicester suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City last time out in the league.

Pearson is confident his players will not be distracted on Saturday by fond memories of their triumph against United.

"I think we've spent so long putting that behind us," he said. "It's long gone.

"We're looking at this game from the perspective of where we are now, and that's it.
"We just want to concentrate on how we prepare for this game, knowing full well that a lot has changed since then in terms of ourselves and our opponents.

"They've had a very good run of results, played different formations. "It's always a difficult place to go, but our players are looking forward to it and we need to look forward to games like this.

"Big stadiums, big teams we're playing against and it's important we go there and do what we can.

" Fourth-placed United, meanwhile, are out to avenge that unexpected defeat. Writing in his blog earlier this week, United midfielder Juan Mata said: "The previous match with them left us with a bad taste; we want to change that and offer a good game to our crowd.
" United are without Ashley Young (hamstring), while Leicester could welcome back Liam Moore (ankle) and Matthew Upson (foot), but Chris Wood (ankle) has been ruled out for three weeks and Riyad Mahrez remains on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Algeria.

Match Facts

Richard Money has called for the Cambridge Untied crowd to savour every moment when Manchester United come to town on Friday night.

The eleven-time FA Cup winners travel to the Abbey Stadium in The FA Cup Fourth Round Proper, and Cambridge boss Money says it is important everybody shows the belief that they can make the impossible possible. "I hope they come to the game full of optimism," he said.

"I hope they come to the game with some belief that Friday can be the one in one-hundred days that we can cause an upset.

"We want everyone to embrace the evening and an opportunity to showcase not just the football club, but the city."

League Two outfit Cambridge are the lowest ranked team still in this season's Cup, and sit 76 places behind their illustrious visitors. However, they remain unbeaten so far in 2015 and Money’s men will go into the game full of confidence after dispatching Newport County 4-0 in their last outing.

And Money says his side can only concentrate on getting their own performance right, before worrying about the superstar names in the opposition line-up.

"I don't think you can think too much about who the individuals are going to be, because they have a plethora of incredible talent, any of whom could play this Friday," he added.

"The only thing you can plan for is how you think they're going to play and that's what we'll be focusing on, and, in the main, focusing on what we can do."

Cambridge have big-match experience within the past 12 months, having twice won at Wembley in The FA Trophy and a Conference play- off final which secured their return to the Football League following a nine-year absence.

The two sides have met twice previously, in a two-legged League
Cup tie in 1991. The Us drew the home leg, before going down 3-0 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

MATCH PREVIEW

The League One side are hoping
to pull off a huge FA Cup shock
against Premier League opposition on Sunday, but go into the game having lost in their last three outings.

By contrast, United stretched their unbeaten run to ten games with a 1-1 draw against Stoke on New Year's Day that kept them in third place in the top flight and on course for a Champions League return.

However, Johnson does not want his squad to show too much respect to the high-flying Reds.

"Being starstruck by Manchester United is a concern and you can't
stop human nature," he said.

"This is a one-off game, which some of the lads aren't going to have again. I'm sure they will think: 'Can I get Wayne Rooney's boots?' You know that's going to happen.

"But we need to make sure we get
into game mode. I don't mind it after the final whistle, but I will have the raging hump if my players swap shirts before then.

"I don't want the lads having selfies with Wayne Rooney. We are going into battle and trying to stop one of the best teams in the world. So there won't be any selfies while I'm around.

" The two clubs have previously met in the FA Cup on two occasions, with United winning both games.

Old Trafford hosted the 1938 and 1949 fixtures in which the Reds racked up 3-0 and 8-0 victories to extend their cup run.

But Johnson is out to attack United in the latest edition of this fixture and ensure they don't make it three wins on the bounce.

"I've never parked the bus as a manager and we don't want to be doing that against Man United," he continued. "We need our fair share of
possession and we need to create chances.

"We don't want to play for a draw against them and get beat and wish we'd gone for it. We need to be trying to win. We aren't going to put 11 men in the box because United would find space anyway.

" United's defensive injury crisis looked to be easing in recent weeks, but they suffered yet another blow against Stoke.

Ashley Young limped off with a hamstring issue at the Britannia Stadium and is set to miss out on the clash with Yeovil as a result.

Marcos Rojo (thigh), Daley Blind (knee) and Marouane Fellaini (illness) are also unlikely to feature, but Angel Di Maria could return.

Match Preview

Louis van Gaal has warned Manchester United to heed lessons from their last encounter with Stoke City when the sides meet on New Year’s Day.

United are halfway through Van Gaal's debut season as manager and a nine-match unbeaten run has helped them rise to third in the Barclays Premier League table.

One of United's recent victories came against Stoke at Old Trafford at the beginning of December, Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata scoring either side of Steven N'Zonzi's equaliser.

However, Van Gaal's men had to withstand late pressure from Mark Hughes' side on that occasion, with goalkeeper David de Gea pulling off a string of impressive saves.

Van Gaal is confident that United can continue to adapt to his methods as the Barclays Premier League welcomes in 2015, but is wary of the challenge Stoke will pose at the Britannia Stadium.

"I remember that match when we played Stoke at home and we were very weak at the end," he said.

"Maybe you remember what I said at the time that I have to look in the balance of my team and the balance of my team was not as good as it is now.

"Everyone can see that we are improving every week in spite of a lot of injuries, and that's because of the philosophy, but we can improve more when we have all the players available.

"When I say every week we are improving, then we have to show that against Stoke City.

" United have welcomed back the defensive trio of Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Rafael Da Silva back from injury over the Christmas period.
Van Gaal's options have been further boosted by the return to training of Ander Herrera and Adnan Januzaj from an ankle injury and illness respectively, but they appear unlikely to feature this week.

Angel di Maria (pelvis) and Fellaini (rib) are also expected to miss out once more, while Marcos Rojo (thigh) and Daley Blind (knee) remain absent.

Stoke may have lost to United this month, but they can take confidence from a 2-1 win in last season's corresponding fixture in February, their only Barclays Premier League win over United.

Hughes, who enjoyed two spells as a player at Old Trafford, has also seen his team beat Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur this term and is sure Stoke can be a threat on New Year's Day.

"We know that we can go up against the top teams and give them a game," he said. "We beat Chelsea last year, ran United close at their place and beat them here last season, we've beaten Arsenal too. "We're looking up. We're just out of the top 10 but we're in shouting distance.

" Stoke, whose 2-0 win over West Brom on Sunday secured back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, could be without in-form forward Bojan Krkic, who has gone for a scan on a hamstring injury, but Jonathan Walters is fit to play despite a recent illness.

Hughes is also likely to be without the trio of Steve Sidwell (knee), Phil Bardsley (ankle) and Stephen Ireland (knee).

Manchester United have lost only one of 20 Barclays Premier League matches they have played on Boxing Day (W17 D2 L1).

Man Utd played Newcastle United on Boxing Day two seasons ago and won 4-3.

Robin van Persie has scored six goals and assisted three more in his last eight BPL starts against Newcastle.

The Magpies are the only team in the BPL yet to score in the opening 30 minutes of a match this season.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Real Madrid Win Club World Cup, Fourth Title Of 2014 by seydam21(m): 5:17am On Dec 21, 2014
Marrakech (Morocco) (AFP) - Real Madrid defeated San Lorenzo of Argentina 2-0 on Saturday to win
the Club World Cup and secure their
fourth trophy of 2014.

The Spanish giants dominated the final with Sergio Ramos, who had been an injury doubt because of a hamstring strain, and Gareth Bale getting on the scoresheet.

Real added the year-ending trophy to the Champions League, Copa del Rey and European Super Cup titles they had already secured in 2014.

They will also end the year on top of La Liga. Saturday's triumph was also their 22nd consecutive win in all
competitions, and they now have in
their sights the mark of 26 straight
wins achieved by Johan Cruyff's
Ajax side in 1971-72.

"We deserved to win the title -- we can say that Real Madrid are the best team in the world," said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"We have done really well this year,
it's been unforgettable. We are a team and a family." Real are also guaranteed to finish the year as La Liga leaders and Ancelotti was already setting his sights on similar achievements in 2015.

"We'd be happy with a repeat. We'll continue forward like this in all competitions and will face the new year with excitement and enthusiasm.

" Meanwhile, Bale tweeted: "Couldn't think of a better Christmas present, FIFA World Club Champions 2014!! #HalaMadrid.

" Ramos opened the scoring after 37minutes when he rose above the San Lorenzo defence to send a thumping header past goalkeeper Sebastian Torrico from a Toni Kroos corner.

Bale made it 2-0 six minutes into the
second half when he collected a pass
from Isco and fired the ball straight at Torrico.

But the Argentine 'keeper made a terrible hash of the Welshman's tame shot and fumbled the ball over the line.

Real 'keeper Iker Casillas was relatively untroubled, called into serious action for the first time well
after the hour mark to keep out an Emmanuel Mas drive.

At the other end, Karim Benzema went close to a third Real goal but his touch went wide of the post.

Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet night and failed to get on the end of a Benzema cross in the 80th minute.

In the last minute, San Lorenzo's Juan Mercier unleashed a powerful, long distance drive which was saved by a diving Casillas.

"Madrid won fairly. But for us it was an honour to have finished the year playing in the final of the World Cup.

We are very proud despite the grief of losing," said San Lorenzo coach Edgardo Bauza.

"It's been a wonderful year for the club and for the fans -- we won the Copa Libertadores.

" Earlier, New zealand's Auckland City claimed third place after defeating Cruz Azul 4-2 in a penalty
shoot-out to become the first Oceania
team to win a medal at the tournament.

The two sides were locked 1-1 at the end of normal time with defender Ryan de Vries' goal in first-half injury time equalised by Joao Rojas' close-range effort just before the hour mark for the Mexican side.

In the shoot-out, Sanni Issa scored the eventual winner for the semi- professionals from Auckland.

The Kiwis had made the third-place play-off by beating Moroccan side Moghreb Tetouan 1-0 and then seeing off African champions Setif of Algeria by the same score.

They narrowly missed out on a place in the final when they conceded an extra-time goal in a 2-1 loss to San Lorenzo. "Half of my players are amateurs.

We deserve to finish where we have because we’ve been brilliant from beginning to end," said Auckland coach Ramon Tribulietx. "I hope this performance will have a positive impact on football in New Zealand. No one expected us to come third, and it’s a real honour."

MATCH PREVIEW

Michael Carrick expects Manchester United's burgeoning Barclays Premier League title push to be put to the test at his former club Tottenham Hotspur.
Following a comprehensive 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, Man Utd have now taken 22 points from their last eight top-flight outings and sit third in the table.

The form being shown by Louis van Gaal's team is fast making a difficult 2013-14 campaign a distant memory, and has even led to suggestions that they could challenge Chelsea and Manchester City for the title.

Indeed, despite the fact they remain some 10 points adrift of Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea, Carrick feels United are capable of upsetting the odds.

However, the in-form playmaker knows Sunday's trip to Spurs, who he left to join United in 2006, will provide his side's title-winning credentials with a stern examination.

"The signs have been good in recent weeks," Carrick told manutd.com.

"We were bitterly disappointed not to win last week [United drew 1-1 at Aston Villa] but we beat Newcastle and now have two big away games [at Spurs and Stoke City].

They will be a good test for us to see where we are at. "We're continuing to look up and will continue to try to catch them [City and Chelsea].

"We're not satisfied with third - it's obviously an improvement and we're getting better, but we want to keep looking up.

"Going to Spurs is always a tough game and to go there two days after the Newcastle match at 12 noon makes it very tough.

"But we have to get ourselves ready for that and it's the same for them as well. It's a game we look forward to and we go there confident."

Spurs will also approach Sunday's clash in high spirits after they recorded a third straight BPL victory with a 2-1 win at Leicester City on Boxing Day.

That result moved Mauricio Pochettino's team to within two points of a place in the top four and, in Harry Kane, Spurs have one of the top flight's in-form forwards.

Kane opened the scoring with his fourth goal in as many matches in the very first minute at the King Power Stadium on Friday, and has seemingly overtaken Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado in Pochettino's striking pecking order.

Pochettino will be relieved to have goalkeeper Hugo Lloris available, with the Frenchman fit despite a heavy collision with Jamie Vardy on Friday.

It is unclear whether Van Gaal will be able to call on Angel di Maria at White Hart Lane, though, after the Argentina star missed the win over Newcastle with an injury sustained in training.

Belgian duo Marouane Fellaini and Adnan Januzaj are definitely out due to illness, while Daley Blind (knee) and Marcos Rojo (thigh) also remain sidelined.

Chris Smalling (muscle), Luke Shaw (ankle) and Ander Herrera (knock) could feature.

Match Preview

Louis van Gaal is demanding a dominant display from his Manchester United side when Newcastle United visit Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

United have won seven and drawn one of their eight matches on home soil since losing 2-1 to Swansea City on the Barclays Premier League's opening day.

Six victories in a row helped Van Gaal's side climb into the top four, although their momentum was checked by a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa in their last match.

Newcastle were one of seven away teams to win a Barclays Premier League match at Old Trafford last season and Van Gaal is keen to continue banishing the memories of those home failings.

"We want to build a fortress at Old Trafford," he said. "We have made it that already because we have won a lot, and with great results.

"We have to continue, but there are no easy games in the Premier League.

My record in away matches as a coach is not so bad. Away, teams are more open and want to attack but here they want to defend.

"That is why we have to build up a certain playing style so we can dominate. I'm saying every week that we are dominating for 45 or 60 minutes. We have to dominate for 90 minutes."

Chris Smalling could return from a groin injury but Luke Shaw (ankle), Marcos Rojo (thigh) are still missing from Van Gaal's defence, while the midfield will be without Marouane Fellaini (illness) and Daley Blind (knee).

The festive period gives little time for recovery and although Van Gaal revealed certain members of his squad are excited by the prospect of playing three games in six days, he is not convinced. "For a few players it is fun because they are recovering quickly,” he said.

"You also have players who are not recovering so quickly, so I have to rotate. I have a lot of injured players, this is the problem with these matches."

Newcastle's up-and-down campaign hit another low at the weekend as they went down 1-0 to Sunderland, their fourth consecutive Tyne-Wear derby defeat, as Adam Johnson scored in the 90th minute.

After a testing start to the campaign, six consecutive wins in all competitions eased Tyneside tensions. However, Sunday's defeat was Newcastle's third in succession and manager Alan Pardew is seeking a strong response from his men. "We have good spirit and character in the squad,” he said.

"In terms of how we lost the [Sunderland] game, if we were going to lose a game, I’d rather we lost it like that. "We tried to win it, and that
ambition won't leave this team because we have a good spirit and we never give in.

"We have to move on, it's as simple as that. We can't dwell on it. It was a performance that was pretty good, but it wasn't enough.

" First-choice goalkeepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliot remain injured, but Pardew is optimistic about the pair's recovery, with playmaker Siem de Jong also closing in on a first appearance since his pre- season move from Ajax.

Pardew will have to find a replacement for Chieck Tiote in midfield after the Ivorian picked up his fifth booking of the season against Sunderland.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / League Cup Semi-final Draw - Liverpool To Play Chelsea by seydam21(m): 11:28pm On Dec 17, 2014
Liverpool will play Chelsea in the League Cup semi-finals, with the second leg to be played at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham will host Sheffield Unite at White Hart Lane in the other tie before travelling to Bramall Lane for the return leg. Liverpool beat Bournemouth 3-1 at the Goldsands Stadium on Wednesday night to book their place in the last four, and they have been drawn against Jose Mourinho's rampant Blues, who also won 3-1 against Derby on Tuesday.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers inists he is just pleased to be in the draw after a difficult season to date:

"The most important thing was getting
through, it was obviously going to be a very difficult game for us but our performance was brilliant and it gets us into the semi-finals over two legs," he told Sky Sports.

"It didn't really matter who we got, we just needed to get there. It's Chelsea and we look forward to it."

Spurs reached the semis after beating Newcastle 4-0 in north London on Wednesday, with goals from Nabil Bentaleb, Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado.

They will meet the Blades, who beat Premier League side Southampton 1 - 0 on Tuesday night.

The first legs will take place on the week commencing January 19, with the returns scheduled for the following week.
