Nairaland / General / Why Does ISIS Keep Making Enemies? by SEYIKP(m): 12:10am On Feb 18, 2015
(CNN)— Whenever ISIS carries out a new atrocity, whether it's beheading a
group of Egyptian Christians or enslaving Yazidi women in Iraq or burning its
victims alive, the big question most people have is: Why on Earth is ISIS doing
this? What could possibly be the point?
Adding to your list of enemies is never a sound strategy, yet ISIS' ferocious
campaign against the Shia, Kurds, Yazidis, Christians, and Muslims who don't
precisely share its views has united every ethnic and religious group in Syria
and Iraq against them.
ISIS is even at war with
its most natural ally, al
Qaeda in Syria.
The Nazis and the
Khmer Rouge went to
great lengths to hide
their crimes against
humanity. Instead, ISIS
posts its many crimes
on social media for
global distribution with
seemingly no thoughts
for the consequences.
ISIS' beheading of the
American journalist
James Foley in mid-
August galvanized much
of the Western world
against the group and
led to an intensified
U.S.-led air campaign
against ISIS, which,
according to U.S.
military officials, has
killed at least 6,000 of
its fighters.
The burning to death by ISIS of the Jordanian pilot, Muath al-Kaseasbeh,
galvanized much of the Arab world against the group and has brought Jordan
into the U.S.-led campaign against ISIS in a much more aggressive manner.
The beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya by an ISIS affiliate led
Egypt's air force on Monday to drop bombs on ISIS positions in eastern Libya.
Former CIA director Robert Gates is reported to have kept a maxim on his desk
that read, "As a general rule, the way to achieve complete strategic surprise is
to commit an act that makes no sense or is even self-destructive."
ISIS keeps surprising the world and its actions do indeed seem to make no
sense or are self-destructive.
So what is going on here?
A key window into understanding ISIS is its English language "in-flight
magazine" Dabiq. Last week the seventh issue of Dabiq was released, and a
close reading of it helps explains ISIS' world view.
The mistake some make when viewing ISIS is to see it as a rational actor.
Instead, as the magazine documents, its ideology is that of an apocalyptic cult
that believes that we are living in the end times and that ISIS' actions are
hastening the moment when this will happen.
The name of the Dabiq
magazine itself helps us
understand ISIS'
worldview. The Syrian
town of Dabiq is where
the Prophet Mohammed
is supposed to have
predicted that the
armies of Islam and
"Rome" would meet for
the final battle that will
precede the end of time
and the triumph of true
Islam.
In the recent issue of
Dabiq it states: "As the
world progresses
towards al-Malhamah
al-Kubrā, ('the Great Battle' to be held at Dabiq) the option to stand on the
sidelines as a mere observer is being lost." In other words, in its logic, you are
either on the side of ISIS or you are on the side of the Crusaders and infidels.
When American aid worker Peter Kassig was murdered by ISIS in November,
"Jihadi John" -- the masked British murderer who has appeared in so many
ISIS videos -- said of Kassig: "We bury the first crusader in Dabiq, eagerly
waiting for the rest of your armies to arrive."
In other words, ISIS wants a Western ground force to invade Syria, as that will
confirm the prophecy about Dabiq.
We live in an increasingly secularized world, so it's sometimes difficult to take
seriously the deeply held religious beliefs of others. For many of us the idea
that the end of times will come with a battle between "Rome" and Islam at the
obscure Syrian town of Dabiq is as absurd as the belief that the Mayans had
that their human sacrifices could influence future events.
But for ISIS, the Dabiq prophecy is deadly serious. Members of ISIS believe that
they are the vanguard fighting a religious war, which Allah has determined will
be won by the forces of true Islam.
This is the conclusion of an important forthcoming new book about ISIS by
terrorism experts J.M. Berger and Jessica Stern who write that ISIS, like many
other "violent apocalyptic groups, tend to see themselves as participating in a
cosmic war between good and evil, in which moral rules do not apply."
This also similar to the conclusion of an excellent new cover story about ISIS in
the Atlantic magazine by Graeme Wood who writes, "Virtually every major
decision and law promulgated by the Islamic State (another name for ISIS)
adheres to what it calls, in its press and pronouncements, and on its billboards,
license plates, stationery, and coins, 'the Prophetic methodology,' which means
following the prophecy and example of Muhammad, in punctilious detail.
Muslims can reject the Islamic State; nearly all do. But pretending that it isn't
actually a religious, millenarian group, with theology that must be understood to
be combated, has already led the United States to underestimate it." Amen to
that.
ISIS members devoutly believe that they are fighting in a cosmic war in which
they are on the side of good, which allows them to kill anyone they perceive to
be standing in their way with no compunction. This is, of course, a serious
delusion, but serious it is.

Religion / 5 Myths (and One Surprising Fact) About Lent by SEYIKP(m): 11:56pm On Feb 17, 2015
Rice Bowl begins on Ash
Wednesday, February
18. The views expressed
in this column belong to
Backe.
(CNN)— Starting on Ash
Wednesday, more than 1 billion Christians around the world will enter the
season of Lent, a time of solemn spiritual preparation for Easter, the culmination
of the church's calendar.
Despite its ancient history (Lent became standardized in the Catholic Church
around the year 325) myths about Lenten traditions abound. Here are five of
the most common, as well as one fact that may surprise you.
Myth 1: Lent is 40 days
Counting from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, there are 46 days.
Then why do we always refer to the 40 days of Lent? The 40 days of fasting
during Lent do not include Sundays.
Every Sunday Christians commemorate the day of Christ's resurrection, thus,
Sunday by its nature is a day of joy and celebration. The Sundays during Lent
are not prescribed days of fasting and abstinence, so meat is permitted.
Myth 2: Lent ends on Easter Sunday
Lent ends on Holy Thursday.
The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18 this year, and ends
on Holy Thursday, April 2, which commemorates Jesus' last supper with his
disciples.
As stated in the Catholic Church's "General Norms for the Liturgical Year and
the Calendar," the Easter triduum (Latin for "three days"wink begins with the
evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, and includes Good Friday and Holy
Saturday. It closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday.
Myth 3: Catholics abstain from meat during Lent
Only on Fridays during Lent are Catholics required to abstain from meat in
remembrance of the sacrifice Jesus made on Good Friday.
According to abstinence laws, meat includes warm-blooded animals and birds.
Fish and other cold-blooded animals are not prohibited.
Local Catholic bishops may determine specific prescripts about what foods are
included in abstinence. This can lead to interesting exceptions. For instance, in
the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, eating muskrat is allowable on Fridays
during Lent. Puffin, beaver and alligator are permissible in some places, too --
provided your local butcher has good connections!
Myth 4: The Pope decides the date of Easter
Thanks in part to astronomers who figured out when all full moons would
occur, for nearly 1,700 years Easter has fallen on the first Sunday after the
Paschal, or Passover, full moon. The earliest possible date of Easter is March
22, and the latest is April 25.This year Easter is on April 5.
The way to calculate the date of Easter was determined at a meeting of church
bishops and others called the Council of Nicea in 325 near Constantinople in
what is now modern day Turkey.
Myth 5: Jesus went into the desert for 40 days before he was put to death
Actually, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert before beginning his public ministry,
several years before he was crucified.
The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke -- individual, yet similar,
interpretations of Christ's message -- each tell of Jesus spending 40 days in
the desert, where he fasted, prayed and was tempted by the devil. After this he
went to Galilee where he called his first disciples and began his public ministry.
The 40 days of Lent are a time to remember and imitate the life and ministry of
Jesus as Christians prepare to commemorate his death and resurrection at
Easter.
Fact : Since 1975, American Catholics have donated $250 million during Lent
to feed the hungry around the world
Catholic Relief Service's Rice Bowl project began in Allentown, Pennsylvania, 40
years ago, when Americans began to take up a collection to help a famine in
West Africa. More than 13,000 faith communities participated in CRS Rice Bowl
last Lent. http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/17/living/catholic-lent/index.html

Politics / Who Is Sponsoring Boko-haram In Nigeria. by SEYIKP(m): 5:45pm On Feb 09, 2015
When the Boko Haram insurgency broke out in northern Nigeria,
specifically Borno state, it was targeting police stations and other
places of work and abode of law enforcement officers following
the killing in police custody of the group’s founder.
But gradually, activities of the group has expanded to taking
control of cities, kidnapping hundreds of girls at a time,
organizing prison breaks, targeting churches and mosques and
most recently deploying female teenage suicide bombers.
A new report by the BBC and King’s College London revealed the
insurgency that Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan once said
was being carried out by “brothers” have made Nigeria the second
most deadly country in the world, just behind Iraq, while the Boko
Haram sect is ranked second in the world in killing the largest
number of people.
Accusing finger have been – and continues to be pointed at
politicians. As recent as last September, the two major political
parties in the country, the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
threatened to mention the names of leaders of the major
opposition party the All Progressives Congress (APC) which it said
are the ones sponsoring the activities of Boko Haram in northern
Nigeria.
But the opposition had said revelations made by Australian
negotiator, Stephen Davies, had exonerated the leadership of the
party from any involvement in the activities of the terrorist
organization since Davis mentioned some PDP members and
political allies of the Nigerian president as the true sponsors of
Boko Haram.
These Nigeria’s neighboring countries have had their fair share of
the spillover of the activities of the terrorist organization
extending beyond the Nigerian borders into their territories,
especially in the Far North Cameroon, near the border with
Nigeria where the country’s army recently killed about 107
members of the group, the attack also resulted in the death of 8
Cameroonian army officers and dozens of citizens.
Apart from engaging the terrorists, the Cameroonian government
especially the military regularly argues with the Nigerian
government specifically the Defense Headquarters.
Group Leader With Nine Lives
One of such instances was the confusion over whether leader of
the group AbubekarShekau is alive or dead with the Cameroonian
Army claiming it killed Shekau while the Nigerian Army insisted
its officers killed Shekau – for the umpteenth time.
Both countries also argued over what really happened when about
300 Nigerian soldiers ran to Cameroun from Mubi town after it
was overran by Boko Haram. Cameroun said Nigerian soldiers
fled while Nigerian Army described the escape as a tactical
maneuver .
Chad, a landlocked country in Central Africa has been strongly
linked with sponsoring Boko Haram. The country shares borders
with Libya, Sudan, Central African Republic, Cameroun, Niger and
Nigeria. Suspicion grew when the Chadian government brokered a
botched ceasefire deal with Boko Haram that misled Nigerian
Army into letting down their guard and was caught unaware by
the terrorist organization.
The Cable quoted a security source saying that Chadians were
serving as foot soldiers for the terrorist organization. A diplomat
told the news media that Chadian president’s involvement could
be regarded as a copycat of the late Libyan leader Muammar
Ghaddafi’s destabilization of West Africa. He added that the
president of Chad Déby was very close to Ghaddafi.
The Cable report suggested that Chad may be interested in gaining
control of the oil deposits in the Chad Basin located in Bornostate,
the hydrocarbon deposit reportedly covers about 3,350 square
meters. If Chad gains control of this resource, it could significantly
boost its economy which currently has former governor of Borno
state Ali Modu Sheriff as one of its major investors. The former
governor is a close ally of the Chadian president and was recently
accused of sponsoring Boko Haram, an allegation he denied.
“In a saner community, Sheriff would be in custody but he is even
among the delegation of the Chadian government that welcomed
President Jonathan when he visited the country. As far as I’m
concerned, he is the prime suspect and number one lead if we are
trying to connect the Nigerian government to the activities of
Boko Haram,” said FunmilayoOguunbiyi, a political analyst.
But Boko Haram continues to have access to state-of-the-art
weapons, surface-to-air missiles, armoured personnel carriers and
other equipment that are only sold to sovereign states. Political
commenters also raised questions about how the terrorist group is
transporting is heavy machineries if it had not received support
from neighboring countries that could easily facilitate acquisition
and transportation.
Speaking in New York at a high level meeting of the United
Nations Security Council, Nigeria’s president said Boko Haram is
getting foreign support, although he didn’t mention any specific
country; he also accused the United States government of not
providing the Nigerian government with sufficient military
assistance that would enable Nigeria to convincingly win the
battle against terrorism.
Recently, the international relations between Nigeria and US
further deteriorated when the Nigerian government cancelled the
military training arrangement it had with the United States to
combat Boko Haram an action that baffled several US security
experts although the Nigerian government gave a number of
reasons for taking the decision.
The France and Russia Connection
A potential French or Russian interest in the Boko Haram
insurgency activities in northern Nigeria was alsomade public this
month when a Russian plane loaded with large amount of arms
and ammunition, bound for neighboring Chad was intercepted by
the Nigerian Army at the Aminu Kano International Airport,
members of the aircraft’s crew were subsequently detained for
questioning. According to the report, the plane was heading for
N’djamena, the capital of Chad.
The plane’s manifest revealed it took off from Bangui, Central
African Republic and had on board 24 military hardware
including a vehicle, helicopters and blades. While confirming the
involvement of the French government, the French ambassador to
Nigeria, Jacques Champagne de Labriolle, however denied claims
that there were arms and ammunition aboard.
In a research note on Boko Haram’s International Reach, Ely
Karmon said although most of Boko Haram’s terrorist activity is
focused, for the moment, on Nigerian territory, the group is
already an important international jihadist organization.
According to Karmon, the bulk of BokoHaram’s membership, the
indiscriminate and cruel characteristic of its attacks, the
complexity of the Nigerian religious and ethnic context, the sheer
weight of the Nigerian state in an instable neighborhood –
Cameroun, Niger, Chad, Mali – and its proximity to the jihadist
battle front in the Sahel convert it into an immediate and
infectious regional threat.
Within Nigeria, citizens are divided over who is to be held
responsible for the actions of Boko Haram. Daniel Olumuyiwa, a
public administrator in Ife southwest Nigeria said he is as
confused as other Nigerians.
“No one can really say who is responsible, only the sponsor and
the terrorist organization could answer that. The rest of us are in
the dark over the crisis,” he told AFKIn

Hong Kong (CNN)—
China has executed a
mining tycoon found

organization, state
media reported Monday.
Liu Han, 48, the former
chairman of Hanlong
Group, was executed
along with his brother,
Liu Wei, and three
associates, official news
agency Xinhua reported.
The men met with their families before they were executed, Xinhua said.
Liu has been linked by state media to former security czar Zhou Yongkang --
the most senior official snared in China's anti-corruption campaign.
Hanlong's interests included mining, real estate, electricity, energy and finance
and the company remains a shareholder in two Australian companies - Moly

Liu was detained in 2013 along with his younger brother. They were sentenced
to death in May 2014.
The Liu brothers started out running gambling dens in their base in Guanghan,
in China's southwestern Sichuan province, in the early 1990s, gathering around
them "a gang of local thugs and vagrants," state media reported around the
time of their trial.
The brothers' empire grew, dèc

Liu Han also developed a reputation as a philanthropist, building a rural school
