Though former President Barack Obama has said he isn't retiring yet, he's already set to receive a healthy governmental pension.
The Former Presidents Act lays out the benefits past presidents receive after they leave office, including a pension and additional funds for travel, office space, staff, and other requirements needed to "maintain the dignity" of the presidency.
Per the statute, Obama's annual presidential pension is $205,700—the same amount as former presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Jimmy Carter. The amount is linked to Cabinet Secretary pay, which is set at Executive Level I pay.
While the presidential pensions are all fixed at the same rate, the current president requests funding from Congress for additional expenses related to former presidents. Those expenses vary widely, mainly because of differences in office space rental costs, per a report from the Congressional Research Service. For example, Jimmy Carter was appropriated $430,000 in fiscal year 2015, while George W. Bush received $1,098,000. Bush received $434,000 for office space that year, while Carter received $112,000.
Upon leaving office, Obama is set to receive less money in FPA funds than any other living president. While he did request an increase of $588,000 in FPA funding for 2017, only $359,000 of it was earmarked for himself—which includes his $205,700 pension, staff salaries, office space, etc.—and the other $229,000 will be distributed between the other four presidents.


Additional appropriations to help the president and his family "transition" to their new life and pay for Secret Service protection are provided through different statutes. For example, Obama requested $9.5 million for the U.S. General Services Administration to carry out the Presidential Transition Act this year (that's for both his transition and Vice President Biden's), including $1 million to brief incoming president Donald Trump's administration.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, on the other hand, receives his retirement income based on his role as President of the Senate. Rules for Senate pensions are much more complicated than presidential pensions, but assuming he has been covered under the Civil Service Retirement System for the past 43 years, Biden's pension could be around $248,670 per year. Former vice presidents do not receive Secret Service protection.
The FPA does not cover health benefits, but former federal employees who were enrolled in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program for five years can receive benefits after their time in office is over. (Carter, who served one term as president and held no other federal role, therefore doesn't qualify.)The Huffington Post reports that Obama will also receive "$383,535 from the Illinois state pension he earned in eight years as a state lawmaker" once he retires.

While a popular story claims he caught it while giving his long inauguration speech in poor weather, there is little evidence to support this theory.
Grover Cleveland (1885-1889 and 1893-1897)

Grover Cleveland is the only man in history to serve a term as president, only to return to the job a few years later.
After his second presidential term, he played the stock market in order to support his family, making a considerable amount of money.
(*This is why, while Barack Obama is the 44th president, there are 42, as opposed to 43, men who have preceded him.)
Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909)

Theodore Roosevelt tried to become president for a third time in 1912 but lost to Woodrow Wilson (before 1951 there was no limit on how many terms presidents could serve).
Afterwards he took his son Kermit to explore the River of Doubt in Brazil.
Battling malaria and dealing with a leg injury in a hostile environment, the trip nearly killed him.
Some people in the US though didn't believe he'd managed to navigate the river while injured and ill.
Richard Nixon (1969-1974)

The Watergate scandal forced Republican Richard Nixon to resign.
His administration had been involved in a cover-up, after a break-in at the Democratic National Congress revealed his opponents had been secretly recorded.
Nixon faced health and financial problems during the fallout, but later sold his memoirs, carried out paid interviews and returned to the world stage.
Jimmy Carter (1977-1981)

He's often held up as the best example of what to do after your time as US president comes to an end.
Jimmy Carter, whose foreign policy problems tainted his presidency, has since worked for humanitarian causes, as well as working in international diplomacy and writing several books.
In 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and at the age of 92 he is still involved in charitable projects such as building homes for disadvantaged people.

(CNN)In case you've ever wondered what connects your intestine to your abdomen, there's a word -- and now, a single organ -- for that: the mesentery. But don't worry; you haven't grown a new organ. It's always been there, performing important functions that affect systems throughout the body, from cardiovascular to immunological.

Leonardo da Vinci depicted it as one contiguous organ, and it remained that way for centuries until 1885, when Sir Frederick Treves' findings presented the mesentery as fragmented amongst the small intestine, transverse colon and sigmoid colon.
The research of Dr. J. Calvin Coffey, foundation chair of surgery at the University of Limerick, is reclassifying this part of the digestive system as a contiguous organ. In a new study, Coffey has established the anatomy and structure of the mesentery, using images and compiling research to show that the organ's continuity can be seen only when it's exposed in a certain way.
The current findings resonate with those of Carl Toldt, who accurately described the presence of the mesentery in 1878. But his research was largely overlooked. At the time, Treves' findings supported the statements of Henry Gray, who mentioned multiple mesenteries in the 1858 first edition of his book "Gray's Anatomy," the go-to medical textbook for students around the world.
Coffey's research has already prompted the latest edition of "Gray's Anatomy" to refer to the mesentery as a continuous organ.

What does it do?
Linking your gut to the rest of your body is an important task, and the mesentery performs it well.
Among its functions, it carries blood and lymphatic fluid between the intestine and the rest of the body. It also maintains the position of the intestine so that it's connected with the abdominal wall without being in direct contact.
That connection is key.
"Without a mesentery to keep the intestine connected, the intestine would have to attach directly to the body wall," Coffey said. "It is unlikely that it would be able to contract and relax along its entire length if it were directly in contact. It maintains the intestine in a particular conformation, 'hitched up,' so that when you stand up or walk about, it doesn't collapse into the pelvis and not function."
Although researchers know that the mesentery plays an important role in the intestinal, vascular, endocrine, cardiovascular and immunological systems, more research is needed to determine the extent of those roles.
But they do have evidence that the mesentery takes environmental signals from the intestine and orchestrates the body's response, Coffey said. One example is how bacteria are sampled in the lymph glands in the mesentery. In response, the glands then coordinate immune responses.
Why has it been misunderstood?
To look at the shape of the membrane, which Coffey calls remarkable, it's easy to see why the mesentery has been depicted differently. It has a spiral formation in the abdomen and is packaged along a spinal trajectory, starting in the upper abdomen and ending in the pelvis.
"In between, it fans out, like a Chinese fan, to span the length of the intestine from the upper small intestine to the end of the large bowel," Coffey said.
The latest anatomy and structure clarifications aid not only doctors, but medical students as well.
"For students, it greatly simplifies the matter of the mesentery," Coffey said. "This was traditionally regarded as a complex field. The current anatomic model is elegant and simple and will help students understand this structure. It will also provide them with a new perspective from which to view other organs in the abdomen. (CNN)Christmas carols aren't supposed to have lyrics like "revenge is like the sweetest joy, next to getting p***y."

But that's exactly what churchgoers in Sri Lanka saw in booklets at a carol service on December 11.
What they expected was the words to the Hail Mary, a common Christian prayer. What they got instead was the profanity-laced lyrics to rap legend Tupac Shakur's Hail Mary.
Andrew Choksy, who attended the Joy to the World service where the lyrics were distributed, said he recognized the Tupac song straight away.

"A lot of people were in shock as whether it was a joke or someone would actually rap the song," he told CNN. "A few of the older ladies in front of us could not stop looking at the printed booklet."
The rap version of Hail Mary contains lyrics about explicit violence, references to female Instruments and the N-word.
Instead of the traditional "Hail Mary full of grace, the lord is with thee," Tupac's version asks Mary, "Do you want to ride or die?"
The event was advertised as "a festival of music for peace and harmony."

Priest apologizes for mistake
The Sri Lanka event, which was held in the capital Colombo, was organized by the Archdiocese of Colombo and the Joseph Vaz Trust.
Father Da Silva, from the archdiocese, told CNN once organizers realized the mistake they asked for the books back.
"The page was in the middle of the booklet. When people looked at this page, they saw it before the start of the show. Two people saw it and alerted us to it," he said.
Father Da Silva said the printer had been a "young boy" who had simply downloaded the wrong version of the song.
