Did you know that it takes three days for meat to digest in the stomach? I am sure many lovers of the delicacy are not aware of the effect that red meat consumption may have on their digestive system. Yet, food experts say it is not only your digestive system that suffers when you eat meat regularly, as many do in these climes where a meal without it is seen as a poor diet. Consultant cardiologist, Dr. James Adetayo, says many do not know that eating meat regularly, which he says can be as much as three times a week, can predispose them to heart disease, a condition that is responsible for the highest mortality in the world. Adetayo notes that red meats such as beef, pork and lamb have more cholesterol and saturated fats than what you can find in white meats such as chicken and fish. The danger that lies in eating red meat as often as people do these days, according to the experts, is that the cholesterol levels in meat raise fatty acids levels in the body, thus provoking heart disease. He says,“We have all heard it a million times: Red meat isn’t exactly a friend to your heart given the high amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol. But many people ignore it and keep eating it every day. “ As much as you can, reduce the pieces of meat you eat. It is the simplest dietary precaution you can take to reduce your chances of developing heart diseases.” Still on our dear hearts, Adetayo states that meat contains a compound called carnitin, which hardens the blood vessels in the body, disrupting blood circulation and supply to the heart. He adds, “The body naturally produces enough carnitine, so we don’t need extra from food. However, red meat has a high concentration of carnitine and when there is an excess of this compound in the body, some intestinal bacteria use it as food, and this leads to an artery-clogging and blood vessel hardening effect. “Blood vessels are vital in circulating blood throughout the body. When they are hardened, blood cannot flow through to the heart. At the end of the day, the whole body pays for this poor blood circulation. Scientists have seen a strong link between high carnitine contents in the body through meats and an individual’s risk for heart attack, stroke and sudden death.” Apart from heart diseases, eating red meat can also increase one’s risk for type 2 diabetes, a disease that has been declared an epidemic by doctors in Nigeria. Food expert and Consultant on the popular Halleluyah Diet, Mr. Mike Okonkwo, says that a major reason why the population of Nigerians living with diabetes continues to rise is the people’s love for red meat. Okonkwo says it contains a lot of calories that do not get digested until 72 hours after they have been ingested. He states, “Sugar is not the cause of diabetes. That you stop taking sugar doesn’t mean you won’t have diabetes. Meat consumption is responsible for the alarming prevalence of diabetes in Nigeria. “ “It takes 72 hours for a piece of meat to digest. That means that the body does not receive nutrients from meat till three days after. By that time, it is useless, so it is stored as calories which are eventually converted to blood glucose – hence, the diabetes.” A study conducted by US scientists establishes the link between regular eating meat and type 2 diabetes. According to the physicians, eating 3.5 ounces of red meat or 1.8 ounces of processed meat a day (two pieces of meat) daily leads to a 19 per cent and 51 per cent increase in diabetes risk for the consumer. The Medical Director, Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Centre at Hoag Hospital, where the study was conducted in California, Dr. Dan Nadeau, notes that diets rich in animal foods such as red meat contribute to the increasing incidence of obesity as well as type 2 diabetes because of their fat content. This warning is for the womenfolk, red meat contains harmful chemicals and hormones that increase a meat eater’s risk of developing breast cancer by another 50 per cent. Researchers believe that the hormones or hormone-like compounds in red meat increase cancer risk by attaching to specific hormone receptors in the breast. According to a study of more than 90,000 women, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, women who eat more than two pieces of red meat per day have a double risk of developing hormone-sensitive breast cancer than women who eat meat just thrice a month. Nadeau notes, “Meat contains a lot of hormones passed down from the chemically enhanced feeds given to the cattle’s by their rearers. “Many livestock are fattened up by hormones that have been illegally mixed into the livestock feed for profit sake. Such meats, when consumed, will increase the hormones in the body. This makes cells reproduce at a faster rate that is unusual for the body.” This is not to say one should not eat meat at all as it is a rich source of protein. The experts only suggest that it is high time you reduced your meat intake and embraced healthier protein sources such as fish, chicken and white meat in general. However, if you must eat meat all, Okonkwo says, it is best to chew it 50 times before swallowing it for easy digestion. If not, you might as well leave it as it only constitutes a nuisance to the digestive system http://www.punchng.com/health/healthwise/red-meat-causes-diabetes-cut-your-intake/

No fewer than six students were injured during a clash among some students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Sunday evening. While some of the eyewitnesses described the fight as a power tussle between students who were loyal to the President of the Student Union, Ibikunle Isaac, and those of the Vice-President, Oladejo Olufunmi, others described it as a cult attack. They all, however, agreed that the clash was an aftermath of President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to the institution. It was learnt that the Education Rights Campaign members had just concluded a meeting at the Students’ Union Building when the fight broke out. Among those involved in the fight were some union executive members, suspended students of the university, members of the Security Committee of the SU and ERC members. Some of the students, who suffered varying degrees of injuries, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. One of them, Tedy, was allegedly stabbed with a pointed object suspected to be a screw driver, while another student, David, was dealt a matchete cut on his head. It was gathered that the door to the SU President Office, where some students hid, was broken while the occupants were thoroughly beaten. There are, however, two sides to the cause of the fight. While some of the students said it was as a result of ideological differences, others inferred that it was related to the protest held during Jonathan’s visit. Jonathan, traditional rulers and some politicians were at the OAU for a conference, where Jonathan was endorsed ahead of the 2015 polls. The campus fracas took a dangerous dimension when students of the school engaged one another at the school gate with weapons. Chief Security Officer of the university, Mr. Paul Ogidi, said there was no cult attack in the institution. “It is true that our students fought. There was no cult attack on our campus. We did not witness any attack, but a fight among our students,” he said. But the Vice-President of the Students Union, Funmi Oladejo, insisted that what happened on the campus could be likened to 1999 cult attack that claimed the lives of students. She denied the fight as being factional, but hinted that the controversy that surrounded the presence of Jonathan on the university campus last Friday contributed to the cause of the fight. She said, “I was to have a meeting at the SUB yesterday (Sunday) around 6pm. On getting there, I met a student, Sanyaolu Oluwajuwon, inside the gutter, where he had been seriously beaten and I wondered what happened. After a while, the injured students went to show the injury to others and that enraged many students. “Meanwhile, what started the fight, I heard, was that ERC were having its meeting when the President and the PRO passed through the place and saw them. He then called his boys to come, saying some people were having an opposition meeting at the SUB. “After beating them up, they ran away except Teddy that waited. We later realised that those that ran to town went to hire cult members, who came with machetes. We eventually caught four of them. Two were students and two were non-students. When asked if the fight was connected to Jonathan’s visit, she responded, “As far as I am concern, that is to mess up the whole issue. They want to make it a partisan stuff and that is out of sense. Our unionism is known to be independent and non-partisan. So, the case of Jonathan’s visit was sardonic. They (Ibikunle’s faction) wanted to pay back the opposition that greeted Jonathan’s visit.” It was learnt that the two of the arrested people involved in the fight were taken by students to the Awolowo Hall of the university, while the security officials took another two students involved in the fight. The President of the SU, Isaac Ibikunle, told our correspondent that none of his loyalists were cult members. He promised to call back to give his “full reaction” after a meeting expected to be held between members of the executive and the parliament today (Monday). The Public Relations Officer of the union, Oludare Bamidele, said, “It remains a sardonic issue that suspended students are beating legitimate students on OAU campus right now. Is this intellectual struggle? The act of dragging a security official to be beaten is an affront to law and arrival of the hobbesian state of nature.” Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Sade Odoro, said those involved in the fight were not cultists. She said, “OAU students truly fought and they were taken to the police station. The police counselled and released them after a while.” Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, confirmed that the students fought over Jonathan’s visit to the institution. He said, “There was no cult invasion in OAU. Our campus is too fortified for that to occur. Our security go on regular patrol and we are in collaboration with external security forces. “What happened was just a fight between two groups of students. “Some believe that it was wrong for another to take picture and welcome the President, Jonathan, while others believe it is not, especially when it is done without their consent. “It is just a friendly fight. All that happened was that a group felt they were not carried along http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathans-visit-oau-students-clash-six-injured-2/ |

the man should just let it go.... However, churches should give back to the poor... the tithe is not only meant for the pastors, the poor should have a share of it. Bring all tithes to my house so that there'll be food in my house... the poor should also come and eat there not to use if to buy agbada, ammunition jets, FG rented jets, BLING BLING, Rolex etc |
darlenese:believe it: "many of our fore fathers are still here on earth today". There are Babatundes, Iyabos, Yewandes who are just like the BABAs or MAMAs that died in character, appearance and in everything... If for example Baba made heaven with his characters on earth then, will he make hell if his character as Babatunde is bad? How will his soul be shared between heaven and hell? Now, if he made heaven as BABA, is he certain to make heaven again? If his soul won't be shared between heaven and hell. Does it mean that babatunde is destined to make heaven or hell as a result of BABA's deeds.... Don't we think that's why some children are wicked from day 1 while some are nice? Even, elders will eulogize them, linking them to the Babas and mamas... Now, our fore fathers who didn't hear about Christ or the HG, but followed to the laws of the land, will they go hell? I mean before the advent of the missionaries... Don't forget that many of the laws of the land are a replica of God's commandment which are: don't steal, don't fornicate, don't back bite, don't ruin someone's life etc... They believed that Orunmila is Jehovah... Speak from here to anywhere, without good character its a waste. speaking in tongues is not a guarantee. though I believe the OP wanted to ask something more? |
