President Muhammadu Buhari has declined the request of governors elected on the platform of the ruling party to allow the old and new naira banknotes co-exist until the former are phased out.
The governors under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) met with Mr Buhari on Friday at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The Nation Newspapers, quoting Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State, reported that the state helmsmen appealed to the Nigerian leader to allow the old and new banknotes to co-exist as legal tender.
Mr El-rufai who said the president did not oblique their request during the meeting noted that Atiku Bagudu, his Kebbi counterpart and chairman of the PGF has gone back to convince the president.
But in a statement released by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, the president promised to tackle the cash crunch in the country within the next one week which is the deadline for the collection of old banknotes by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The statement indicates that while there might be changes in the policies, the extended deadline remains sacrosanct.
“Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves”, said the president, “even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away.
“I will revert to the CBN and the Minting Company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension,” Mr Buhari assured his visitors. https://todaypoliticsng.com/buhari-declines-apc-govs-request-to-allow-old-and-new-naira-notes-co-exist/ |

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has again attacked the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The latest attack from the former Lagos governor on Thursday while campaigning in Osun State comes a week after he alleged that officials of the Buhari regime were out to frustrate him from succeeding the president.
He cited the increasing scarcity of petrol and the recoloured naira notes to buttress his point but Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, debunked the insinuations that agents of the federal government were out to frustrate the political ambition of their party’s flag bearer.
Boasting in Osogbo, the APC candidate claimed to have installed the Nigerian leader who unsuccessfully sought the office thrice and clinched it at the fourth attempt in 2015.
“We are the ones that installed them (Buhari regime),” Mr Tinubu who spoke using local language claimed. “We are the ones that will succeed them. They want to cause us discomfort.”
Mr Tinubu’s wailing have been re-echoed by Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State who refused to name the saboteur, saying they will be defeated before being publicly named.
Mr Buhari, who said he was not going back on his resolve to conduct a free, fair and credible elections, was visibly absent in some of the APC campaign rallies where he is expected to be present. Politics › Buhari Absent Again From Tinubu’s Campaign Rallies by sharpden(op): 6:54am On Feb 01, 2023 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has again distanced himself from the presidential campaign rallies of Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the February 25 exercise.
After the kickoff of the presidential campaign in Jos last November, Mr Buhari isolated himself from the campaign of the former Lagos governor, prompting political analysts to opine he was not in support of his party’s flag bearer.
Last month, the president was billed to attend ten campaign rallies of his party but TODAY POLITICS has observed that after appearing and addressing supporters in Adamawa and Yobe respectively, the Nigerian leader has again distanced himself.
Aside the two rallies he attended, Mr Buhari was scheduled to campaign in Sokoto on 16 January, Kwara on 17 January and Ogun on 25 January.
The President, according campaign spokesperson who doubles as junior labour minister, Festus Keyamo, would also be physically present at the rallies in Cross River on 30 January, Nasarawa on 4 February, Katsina on 6 February and Imo on 14 February.
Mr Buhari will also participate in the grand finale of the APC presidential campaign in Lagos on February 18 ahead of the election on 25 February, the campaign spokesperson said.
On January 23, the president appeared in Bauchi campaign rally but hurriedly left after the sound system at the venue broke down.
Although the Sokoto rally is yet to take place, the president was absent from that of Kwara, Ogun and Cross River.
In Ogun, the former Lagos governor came down hard on his party, accusing government officials of sabotaging his chances at the polls by instigating the increasing scarcity of petrol and the recoloured new Naira notes.
His campaign team later denied he directly attacked the president’s administration.
Campaigning in Calabar on Monday in the absence of Buhari, Mr Tinubu said the economic team of the president was incompetent for overseeing the incessant fall of Naira at the foreign exchange.
“They moved the exchange rate from N200 to N800,” the APC candidate who spearheaded the coming of the present regime in 2015 lamented. “If they have repaired it, if they have arrested this, we won’t be where we are today. We will have been greater.”
Meanwhile a member of the Public Affairs Directorate APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Mariya Ibrahim Baba has explained why the president has been absent at the rallies he was billed to attend.
Appearing on Arise TV on Friday, Ms Baba explained that the Nigerian leader was too busy to attend political rallies but would soon join the campaign train in his home state of Katsina.
“Buhari is still the president of Nigeria and he has work to do,” she explained. “If you notice he has outlined the places he will accompany the presidential candidate to campaign and he has been to other places even when we flagged off our campaign in Jos he was there and he’s going to be in Katsina very soon.
“But he is the sitting president and you don’t expect him to leave office for the whole campaign period to go out to campaign when he has work to do. It doesn’t make sense.
“He has to divide his time into these two very important areas. As the president he has to attend to his duties too.” https://todaypoliticsng.com/buhari-absent-again-from-tinubus-campaign-rallies/ |

Politics › Vowing To Deal With Those Who Vote Against APC Is Motivation Not Threat – Reps by sharpden(op): 1:09pm On Dec 14, 2022 |
Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the majority leader of the House of Representatives, has described his recent remarks of vowing to unleash violence on electorates who fail to vote his political party as motivation.
The Doguwa/Tudun Wada representative stated this on Tuesday when he appeared on Channels Television, denying he threatened dissent voters while campaigning somewhere in Kano.
Last week, a video clip captured the moment the lawmaker made the threat, promising to deal with voters who fail to vote for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
His comments came weeks after the chairman of the APC in Kano vowed to ensure his party wins the state either by hook or crook.
Nigerians, particularly on social media, lampooned the majority leader of the House of Representatives for his remarks.
Defending himself, Mr Doguwa explained that the comments were meant to motivate electorates rather than threaten them. He said that has been the practice in the Northwest state during electioneering season.
“That is not a threat,” he explained. “I would never threaten our electorates. What you don’t know about Kano State (is that) Kano State is one very special political space. We have our special semantics in politics.
“We have the shenanigans we use during electioneering campaigns. Kano State is an aggressive state in terms of politics of ideology. In Kano State, we have our own way or approaches when it comes to campaigns. You must employ and use what will ginger your people.
“We have inherited this from time immemorial. Asking people to vote for APC or we deal with them simply means – like what you can call shenanigans, political brouhaha which we make simply to ‘ginger’ our supporters, to let them feel that we are on the ground and we will get it right.
“I never meant to intimidate, I never meant to threaten any of my voters. I’m a reasonable person. I have been in election processes for the past 32 years and I’ve never used threats or intimidation to win my elections.
“But you cannot take away political shenanigans, brouhaha, and sloganeering in Nigeria’s politics. Nigerians should not take this as a threat. It’s part of our political shenanigans and brouhaha. This is what we call the highlights of democracy in Kano politics and you cannot rule that out,” he added. https://todaypoliticsng.com/vowing-to-deal-with-those-who-vote-against-apc-is-motivation-not-threat-reps-leader/

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has revealed the source of his stupendous wealth.
Aside his known investments in the media, other sources of his wealth have largely been unknown. At the eve of the 2019 general election, two bullion vans used in conveying large sums of money arrived at his Lagos residence.
At a later date, the former Lagos governor who left office in 2007 defended the funds, claiming they were all his, having been out of government for a long time.
His critics describe him as a drug peddler, having forfeited $460,000 to the government of the United States three decades ago in what is now claimed to be tax deductions from one of his campaign spokesman, Festus Keyamo.
In an interview aired on Tuesday by the BBC, the ruling party’s candidate said he inherited real estate which he has continued to deal on.
“Are they (critics) enemies of wealth?” he queried, retorting, “If they are not enemies of wealth, investments do yield.”
He cited an example of Warren Buffett, an American business magnate, investor, and philanthropist who he claimed started from stock buying and brokerages.
“I inherited great real estate, I turned the values around, I am not denying my wealth,” Mr Tinubu added, claiming he is the most probed opposition former governor and “since I left the office, I have not taken any government appointment, no government contract.”
He also denied receiving shares from the Lagos State treasury as insinuated in some quarters, saying the purveyors of the allegations were envious of him.
“Hey, excuse me, share, what? Have they proven it? The World Bank, (and) the International Monetary Fund have investigated the records in Lagos. What’s wrong with them? It’s envy,” the APC candidate added. https://todaypoliticsng.com/tinubu-reveals-source-of-stupendous-wealth/ |

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) on Monday dropped another gaffe at the Chatham House in the United Kingdom.
Since the former Lagos governor began his presidential campaign, it has been from one gaffe to another whenever he addresses his supporters at the podium.
Series of his goofs are often mimicked by comedians and skit makers in the country for comic relief.
Addressing his audience at the UK think-tank, Mr Tinubu blew another blunder while saying, “I hereby urged all my fellow ‘consentensants’ in this election to do the same.”
A twelve seconds video clip trending on social media captured the moment he meant to say his fellow contestants.

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) says they have lost confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free and fair election during next year’s general election with the introduction of electronics accreditation and transmission of results.
Mr Tinubu stated this on Monday while addressing the audience at the Chatham House, frontline UK think-tank in London as part of a strategy to expound on his plans for security, economy and foreign policy.
He said the electoral body was yet to assure him and his party that the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV) into the system are reliable.
His comments comes weeks after the national chairman of the ruling party, Adamu Adamu casted doubt at the adoption of the new initiative.
“We are still losing confidence in our democratic and voting system,” the former Lagos governor said. “INEC is still yet to assure us during this election that electronic transmission, the technology being used for the accreditation and the total votes counts is reliable, dependable and assuring in our democratic process before we introduce a complicated element of…ballot.”

Politics › Buhari Lists 9 Oil Producing States Given N625bn by sharpden(op): 3:29pm On Dec 02, 2022 |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday confirmed approving the payments of the 13 per cent derivation funds to nine oil producing states in the country.
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State revealed last month that Mr Buhari approved the payments of the funds which previous Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administrations failed to.
Mr Wike said the 13 per cent proceeds from the oil funds accruing to the state is the source of some funds he is using to erect infrastructures in his domain.
After the remarks of the governor nicknamed Mr Project, some oil producing states denied receiving the funds.
Confirming that about N625 billion have been disbursed so far, the president in a tweet said that what was left of the total N1.7 trillion will be paid in the fullness of time
He said he approved the payments not minding the political parties in charges of the states, listing Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers as beneficiaries.
He said aside from the 13 percent oil derivation, his regime also paid for Subsidy and SURE-P, covering the period between 1999 and 2021.
“I have approved payments totalling 1.7 Trillion Naira to 9 oil-producing States,as refunds owed them by @NigeriaGov,” the Nigerian leader tweeted. “As a matter of honour, all debts owed States must be paid, regardless of political affiliation. N625B has been paid so far; the balance will be paid in due course.
“The benefiting States are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, Rivers; and the payments are refunds for 13 percent oil derivation, Subsidy and SURE-P, covering the period between 1999 and 2021.”

Mr Baba-Ahmed, who stated this on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja, accused the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of peddling falsehoods as campaign strategies.
The former Kaduna North senator lamented that despite the noble objective of the recently signed Peace Accord by all political parties ahead of the 2023 general elections, the APC and the PDP which he described as “erstwhile major political parties” have resorted to the adoption of falsehoods against Peter Obi, the LP flag-bearer, including the false narratives recently being spread nationwide that Obi is against the production of oil in the northern region.

In another series of gaffes, Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has released blunder while urging his supporters to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) which will enable them to vote.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the last batch of the PVCs will be ready at the end of the month for collection.

“Do you love me?” a trending video clip showed the APC candidate asking his supporters who chorused in the affirmative. “Go and take your APV…APC and you must vote.”
The latest misspeak comes a day after he declared that outgoing Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, will be the governor of Niger Delta state, a geo-political zone with six states therein.

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has blown another gaffe, being the latest of his misspeak series.
Mr Tinubu, a former Lagos governor, occasionally trends on social media due to series of his gaffes since political campaigns began late September.
During his visit to Delta State on Friday, the ruling party’s candidate, while addressing his supporters, said outgoing Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege will be the governor of Niger Delta state next year.
“I equally recognise, today, the deputy senate president currently,” the politician said in a trending video clip which showed him reading from a prepared speech. “And he will be the governor of Niger Delta state.”
Supporters of the APC clapped while their presidential candidate apparently mistook the Niger Delta region comprising of six states for Delta State.
The former governor who is in the state to dialogue with stakeholders of the Gbamaturu Kingdom among others, took a swipe at his rivals, claiming Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is tired, while Peter Obi, the flag-bearer of the Labour Party (LP) is a statistical liar.
The latest clanger comes weeks after another in Plateau, during the flag-off of his campaign, where he prayed God to bless the opposition party before recalling the acronym of his party.
Last month, he commended Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna, for turning the rotten situation of the state to a bad one, a remark his campaign council claimed was a slip of tongue.
He is being reported in some sections of the media of suffering from dementia, a development that probably may have led to him avoiding presidential debates and opting for town hall meetings, most of which he reads from a prepared speech. https://todaypoliticsng.com/in-another-gaffe-tinubu-says-omo-agege-will-be-governor-of-niger-delta-state/ |

The former Lagos State governor bashed opposition candidates, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi, the flag-bearer of the Labour Party (LP) when he addressed a gathering of Niger Delta Stakeholders held in Gbaramatu, Delta State.
Mr Tinubu who was addressing the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oboro-Gbaraun II (Aketekpe, Agadagba) on his plans for the community, said Mr Abubakar, a former vice president who sought the position in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019, is tired while Mr Obi, whom he did not directly reference, peddles false statistics.
The former Anambra governor is notable for divulging statistics which will aid him “in moving the country from consumption to production.”
“You mentioned the issue of the deep sea port, the roads, the bridge, and the university, industrial park at Ogidigben,” he said. “These are the things that came to your mind, Kabiyesi, and all of you here.
“Kabiyesi, Your Royal Highness, as I stand before you, there are few of us left running. One says he is Atiku. How many times has he been running? He’s always on the run and he’s tired. Tell him to go and sit down. Enough is enough.
“The other one, he think na statistic we go chop. He lies with arithmetic that no Indian can ever solve. To mention his name is a disgrace even to me. I won’t mention the name. Wrong arithmetic, wrong statistics, warehouse economics. That’s not what Nigeria needs.

Social media reports said the former Anambra governor on Thursday claimed that he was the classmate of Peter Odili, the former governor of Rivers State, whom he played school football matches with.
Another report said the LP presidential candidate was a six-year-old lad when Mr Odili left Christ the King College in Onitsha.
Clarifying his comment, Mr Obi denied being the classmate of the former Rivers State governor, saying his comment were misconstrued.
“I did not say that former Governor Odili was my classmate, rather I said that he was a great footballer in my school, and we all cherished and had good memories of his football exploits when we got into the school,” the Anambra politician explained in a statement on Saturday. “I was in CKC from 1973 to 1978 and Dr Peter Odili had graduated before I got into the school. “I don’t read social media anymore,” the former governor told the amused audience. “They (users) abuse hell out of me.”

He also said abuses and other negative remarks therein gets him angry, reason he has refrain from using it. He also said he relies on what his children and aides tell him that is ongoing on social media.
“So, if I want to hear anything, my children or any of my workers will tell me, these one said this one. If I’m tired I will please forget it,” he added.
Last year, the Buhari regime banned Twitter, one of the social media platforms in the country while threatening to subjugate others should they fail to meet demands, including access to censor dissenting voices.
