According to op, his friend was not allowed to board the plane from Shanghai to Hong-kong because he has no Hong kong VISA. Which, means, he needs to go to the Hong kong embassy or consulate in shanghai to get the VISA

Dear op, you can tell your friend to extend his VISA before it expires he can then comfortably search for another flight that will be cheaper and wouln't require a transit VISA

Are you suggesting that to wait at the airport (transit) to connect/board a different flight from the same airport one would need a visa? (Transit visa)

He needs the transit VISA because he would be passing through the airport immigration to check out his baggages from the arrival hall back to the departure hall.

Some people are here, don't know what is going on, almost all the airlines you mentioned don't have direct access to China at the moment, the few airlines with access are very expensive.
I hope the guy can solve the issues as soon as possible.
I almost make the same mistake. I'm here to learn and find the easiest way out.

You see? one thing many people don't understand is that Immigration laws changs so fast. Things that were tolerated in a country last year might no longer be tolerated this year.


Just like the op, i'm also on this thread to learn cos my sister also missed her flight yesterday due to this same issue

Traveling to India from Nigeria with Turkish airlines: we stayed for more than 12 hours waiting to connect with our next flight. No transit visa needed.

Your was because you patronized one airline company through out your journey. My sister has this same issue so i understand the op

They barely go that route these days. The Covid-19 really affected them. I have a sister who is currently facing the same problem

Many of the commenters have obviously not travelled in a while. Some are even suggesting Ethiopia airline
