It’s still a few days before Samuel Peter and Wladimir Klitschko meet head-on in their much anticipated world title fight. Peter predicted last week a knockout victory over Klitschko, He departed for Germany from his California, USA, base where he has been training for the past two months in the company of his manager Ivaylo Gotsev and trainer Abel Sanchez.

Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, alerted residents along the Lekki and Victoria Island corridor that there might be rise in the water level of the Atlantic Ocean.



The state Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructural Development, Mr. Segun Oniru, said the persistent rise in water level in the Atlantic Ocean, which, he said, might have triggered excessive flooding in countries such as Pakistan, India and the Caribbean, was likely to repeat itself at the Lagos water front.



He, therefore, cautioned residents along the Lekki and Victoria Island corridor to reduce their activities along the Lagoon and ocean at this period in order to stay off danger.



While Oniru ruled out any imminent danger, he, however, warned against what he referred to as ‘spring high tide’ which usually occurred in June and mid- November.



He said, “When strong wind activities happen in the Atlantic, we get ripple effect or direct effect passing our shorelines and such happened about a year ago. But it was not as bad as what happened earlier this year.



“This wind effect in the Atlantic actually blew some vessel anchored within our shore line about 5 kilometres to the beach front, around lighthouse area. We had about 13 vessels along the waterway and from Badagry to Epe about seven or eight were affected during that time of wind activities.”



Oniru explained that the information was not to create panic, but to enlighten Lagosians on what is going on around them and also to make sure that they are careful around the Atlantic Ocean and Lagoon.



He said his ministry recently engaged the service of a consultant to carry out a study on the entire shoreline in Lagos, from Badagry to Epe. He said the study was, among other functions, geared towards informing the government on areas where there might be problems in future and how such would be prevented and also to give warning signs of when this problem will occur.



He said, “What we have done with developer of Eko Atlantic city was to keep testing that wall that they use to protect the city as it develops, the latest test was carried out about two weeks ago and all the test that they carry out, the state government is carried along NPA and NEMASA representative were always invited to come.”

FIFTY-FOUR days after his emergence as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Okwesilieze Nwodo was yesterday described as “a mistake” by governors elected on the party’s platform.

They resolved at a three-hour emergency meeting at the Kwara State Governor’s Lodge, Abuja, that Nwodo must prove that he is “a national chairman and not a factional chairman” or he should be ready to leave the party.

Nwodo succeeded Prince Vincent Ogbulafor on June 17, 2010 at the 51stst National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the ruling party after the latter was forced to resign.

At yesterday’s meeting were the host and Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, Bukola Saraki (Kwara); Ikedi Ohakim (Imo); Aliyu Shinkafi (Zamfara); Martin Elechi (Ebonyi); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); Akwe Doma (Nasarawa); Saidu Dakingari (Kebbi); Ibrahim Shema (Katsina); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Danjuma Goje (Gombe); Sullivan Chime (Enugu) and Segun Oni (Ekiti).

Others included Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Gbenga Daniel (Ogun); Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa); Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom); Isa Yuguda (Bauchi); Murtala Nyako (Adamawa); Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun) and Adebayo Alao-Akala (Oyo).

The meeting, which ended at 8 p.m., agreed that Nwodo’s conduct was unbecoming of a national chairman.

He was quoted to have declared that he was going to embarrass any governor who comes to his house to lobby him.

Already, the state executive committees in Abia has been dissolved. That of Ogun was ordered to fuse into another group and excos in states, such as, Delta, Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, Adamawa, Zamfara, Niger, Bauchi and a few others are under threat of the National Working Committee (NWC’s) dissolution.

Reporters who waited till the end of the meeting were disappointed as the governors, wearing long faces, refused to speak with them.

But, Saraki, when cornered, said it was “a family meeting.” He refused to speak further.

A South-South source, whose state exco is about to be affected because of the influence of a former minister in Abuja, said the governors may ask for Nwodo’s resignation very soon.

“They resolved that the on-line registration should be discarded with and all the excos tampered with should be reversed and the rest should be left intact. They also discussed the planned convention and resolved that it must be dropped.

“On zoning, they could not agree. They, however, decided to leave it till Thursday’s NEC meeting,” he said.

A presidency source disclosed yesterday that President Goodluck Jonathan will meet with the governors today at a dinner to declare his intention to run or not.
