…Says I rather drop dead than submit to intimidation From ISMAIL OMIPIDAN and MUKAILA ABDULLAHI TSOHO, in Dutse Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State has said that the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is a threat to the country’s democracy. Similarly, he described the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, as the biggest political virus threatening the country’s fledgling democracy, saying that unless all democrats come together to salvage the situation, it may also lead to the collapse of the country’s democracy. This is even as he declared that he would rather drop dead than succumb to blackmail and intimidation. Specifically, the Jigawa governor, a foundation member of the PDP, who was playing host to the former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd) on Thursday, called on people of conscience like him (Abubakar), to rise up and save the country’s democracy, insisting that PDP’s crisis was Nigeria’s crisis and that it is capable of derailing the country’s democracy. Abubakar, who was in the state, to commission the state Judiciary complex, paid him a courtesy visit. While explaining that his colleagues who left the party last Tuesday, loved the party, and had worked for it, but had to leave out of “pain and frustration,” however, declared that defecting to the All Progressives Congress, APC, was not the solution to the crisis bedeviling the country’s democracy, saying PDP’s crisis was dangerous to the country’s democracy. “I know how you feel, seeing the democracy you nurtured being cannibalised by people who now regard government as their personal entity and personal industry, and subject people to their whims and caprices, where a governor of a state, is being held hostage. This is a very dangerous development to our democracy. Therefore, all democrats should unite to salvage this democracy. “Those of my colleagues who left the PDP, loved the party. They have worked for the party. But had to leave out of pain and frustration. Nigerians must unite and say no to PDP’s impunity, otherwise we will be destroying the democracy General Abubakar built. The PDP’s crisis is a Nigeria’s crisis, and it has the potential of truncating our democracy. Therefore, people like you with conscience should speak up and say ‘enough is enough,’ because if the PDP collapses, the entire system will collapse. “Bamanga Tukur is today the biggest political virus threatening Nigeria’s democracy. PDP, APC, APGA and all other parties must unite to save our democracy. But going to APC is not the solution. The solution is in uniting and saying ‘no’ to PDP’s impunity. Democracy is in danger, so it has to be defended. So, people like you (Abubakar) and other nationalists should be able to say ‘no.’ “Justice is the foundation of human dignity, because it restores the human virtue. But today, the veil, blind folding the woman that symbolises the judge is blind and cannot see the parties in dispute, appears to now have a hole through which it can now see the parties, and therefore can no longer be just and fair. “But rather than succumb to the antics of the misinformation, blackmail and intimidation, I will rather drop dead,” Lamido added. Responding, the former Head of State, who was visiting Jigawa State, on a state visit, for the first time since its creation, called on Nigerians to give peace a chance, saying that no meaningful development could take place in an atmosphere of violence. “Without peace, there will be no nation. People cannot go about to look for their daily bread when there is no peace. Whatever we are doing, we must make peace. We have to do the right thing. “Every Nigerian, including people like you, who were in the gulag, for fighting for democracy, should take credit for the return of democracy in 1999. “I commend the effort of the governor to the sustenance of democracy. Even if you win wars, you must sit down and discuss. Therefore, I am appealing to everyone in Nigeria to give peace a chance,” Abubakar said. SOURCE |
A former military Head of State, retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has said that he has no anointed candidate for any political position in the country. Buhari, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, said this on Saturday in Kano at a sensitisation workshop, organised by the Kano APC Forum for Peace and Equity. The former head of state said that he had no candidate and urged anybody who wanted to aspire to any post to feel free to do so. ‘’Buhari has not anointed anybody as a candidate, so whoever people want is his candidate. ‘’Whoever emerges for the party as the people’s candidate at the local, state or presidential level is Buhari’s candidate. So Buhari’s candidate is the people’s candidate,’’ he said. According to him, the APC as a party is not concerned about Buhari as a person or anybody but about the future of Nigeria and Nigerians. He urged members of the parties which merged to close ranks so as to ensure the success of the APC in future elections. Buhari was represented by a former member of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Faruk Aliyu. Earlier, the former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, who was also represented, stressed the importance of unity among the APC’s members. ‘’ APC has a history of unity because it came into being following the decision of three parties to merge.’’ Also speaking, the chairman of the forum, Alhaji Umar El- Yakub, urged the party’s leaders to avoid politics of hate, deceit and selfish interest in order to achieve its objectives. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that five of the seven governors in the splinter group of the People’s Democratic Party formally announced their merger with the APC on Tuesday. SOURCE |
