Politics / PDP Affirms Garba Umar As Taraba Acting-Governor… by SherlockHolmes1(m): 6:30pm On Sep 03, 2013
The Senator Hope Uzodinma committee empanelled by the Peoples Democratic Party to mediate in the state’s political imbroglio has asked the state’s deputy governor to continue in office as acting governor but should take instructions directly from ailing Governor Danbaba Suntai.

The decisions, spokesperson to the Acting Governor, Kefas Sule, told PREMIUM TIMES, were reached Tuesday afternoon after the committee met with Governor Suntai and Deputy Governor Garba Umar.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Mr. Uzodinma said Mr. Umar should continue to rule Taraba based on instructions he receives directly from Mr. Suntai.
More details later ….
See below our earlier report on the committee’s visit to Taraba

The presidency and the headquarters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will send a high-powered delegation to visit Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, on Tuesday to try to resolve the political crisis in the state, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

The spokesperson of Acting Governor Garba Umar, Kefas Sule, said the state government had concluded arrangements to receive the delegation.

“We are aware of the visit, and we have been told they are coming to mediate on the political crisis in the state,” Mr. Sule told PREMIUM TIMES.

He also said the delegation is expected to arrive Jalingo by 11 a.m., adding, however, that no venue had been announced for the meeting. He also did not confirm if the team would be meeting both the Acting Governor and Mr. Suntai separately or together.

Efforts to reach two of the president’s aides, Doyin Okupe and Ahmed Gulak, were unsuccessful as they did not answer calls made to their mobile telephones.

Sources however said the two delegations might be led by the National Chairman of the PDP, Bamanga Tukur.
However, one of Mr. Suntai’s confidant, Emmanuel Bwacha, who is also a serving Senator had informed the BBC Hausa service on Monday that the governor’s camp did not have confidence in Mr. Tukur wading into the crisis as a neutral person.

Mr. Bwacha said it was wrong of Mr. Tukur to declare that the leadership of the party could not allow ‘governing by proxy’ in the state, without first conducting a proper investigation.

Also, Mr. Tukur had earlier raised a Taraba fact-finding committee under the leadership of another Senator, Hope Uzodinma, to investigate the true state of Mr. Suntai’s health while he was still in the hospital in the U.S.
But as soon as the committee was set to start its assignment, two members of the PDP in the state, Jude Garba from Sardauna Local Government Area and Sale Audu from Takum Local Government Area, approached a state High Court under Justice Nuhu Adi, asking for an interim order restraining the PDP and the Uzodinma committee from acting pending the determination of the substantive suit.

In spite of the court order, the Uzodinma committee paid a ‘solidarity visit’ to the ailing governor on his hospital bed in the U.S.
While in the U.S., Mr. Uzodinma told the media, “We are impressed with what we have seen and we thank God for that. We will take back home what we have seen and we will inform the leadership of the party”.

Politics / Fire Shuts Kenya’s International Airport In Nairobi by SherlockHolmes1(m): 2:49pm On Aug 07, 2013
Fire engulfed Kenya’s main airport on Wednesday, choking a vital travel and trade gateway to east Africa, witnesses and officials said.

Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, the region’s busiest, that started early in the morning in the immigration section of the departure lounge and spread to the international arrivals area, officials said.

Huge plumes of black smoke billowed from the airport buildings, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The cause of the fire was not yet known.

“We are still fighting to contain the fire. Investigations will start immediately after,” Michael Kamau, cabinet secretary for transport, told reporters at the airport.

Politics / Nigeria Will Not Disintegrate - Gulak by SherlockHolmes1(m): 12:52pm On Jul 31, 2013
The special adviser to the President on political matters, Barr. Ahmed Gulak, has said Nigeria will not disintegrate, but will continue to grow stronger in spite of the myriad of challenges facing it.

Speaking at a break-of-fast organised by the Goodluck Support Group at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers in Abuja on Tuesday, Gulak said that Nigeria fought a civil war and came out of it stronger, saying no test could be greater or worst than that.

Gulak, who is the national coordinator of the group, noted that group was formed in 2010 in order to foster the peace and unity of the country, adding that the essence of the event was for youths to come together to share love, irrespective of religion, tribe or tongue.

He observed that youths were the worst hit in terms of unemployment, illiteracy and violence, and urged them to shun act capable of undermining the peace and unity of the country.

The special adviser said there could never be any meaningful development in the absence of peace, adding that the task of developing Nigeria rested squarely on the shoulders of the youth.

He further urged youths in the country to support the transformation of President Goodluck Jonathan, which he said, was all encompassing to put Nigeria on the fast-track of development.

The break-of-fast was attended by youths drawn from various youth groups across the country.

Politics / Indigenes Repels Attacks, Kill Five Gunmen In Southern Kaduna by SherlockHolmes1(m): 5:18pm On Jul 21, 2013
A senior security source has confirmed to SaharaReporters that about three gunmen suspected to be members of an unknown militant Islamist group, were killed by local residents in southern Kaduna in the early hours of today. The fierce fight happened in an area known as Fadan Kaje, close to Zonkwa in Zangon Kataf local government.

The source added that the gunmen had specialized in carrying out night attacks in the volatile southern Kaduna area of Kaduna State. According to our source, some of the locals who repelled the attacks suffered some injuries.

Several residents told SaharaReporters that the whole area was agog with gunshots throughout the night.
Our security source said,“We are still gathering information from the scene, but the fact is that about five of the gunmen who attacked the village have been killed by the indigenes of the area.”

He added that this was the first time gunmen menacing the area suffered casualties since they commenced their guerrilla attacks in the area.

Sports / Can A Team Win 79-0? Police Probe Fantasy Football Scores by SherlockHolmes1(m): 5:04pm On Jul 21, 2013
(CNN) -- It's not every day that just two football matches produce a cricket score -- in this case an incredible 146 goals -- and Nigerian football authorities are so suspicious of the games in question that they have been referred to the police as a "criminal matter."
As both Plateau United Feeders and Police Machine FC battled to reach the fifth tier of the Nigerian football league on Monday, the amateur sides racked up 79-0 and 67-0 wins respectively.
At half-time, the teams had managed a relatively meager 13 goals between them -- only for the avalanche to begin as the teams tried to outdo one another on goal difference.
Read: Nigeria win 2013 Africa Cup of Nations
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) indefinitely suspended the winning sides and their beaten opponents as it launched an investigation into an incident it termed "a mind-boggling show of shame never previously witnessed in Nigerian football."
Nigerians out in force for Africa Cup How Abedi Pele became a football pioneer Grooming Ghana's next football stars Tour Brazilian football's spiritual home
The scores were the biggest seen in African football since Madagascar's AS Adema won 149-0 in a 2002 match where losing side Stade Olympique l'Emyrne scored numerous own goals in protest at a refereeing decision.
"We have reported the matter to police as it is a criminal matter," the NFF's Assistant Media Director Ademola Olajire, told CNN.
"They will do their due diligence, and we will also do our own investigation. The results of our investigation are likely to result in very, very severe penalties for all involved. The clubs may be banned for life."
One of the losing sides, Bubayaro, has already been disbanded by its president following their thrashing by Police Machine FC, while Akurba FC were the side who shipped 79 goals.
Like the NFF, Bubayaro owner Shuaibu-Gara Ahmed Gombe also referred the incident to police in Bauchi State, which is where the playoff matches took place.
But those associated with the club cannot wash their hands of the matter by simply closing Bubayaro down, says Olajire.
"We still have details of their officials," he explained. "They still exist as people and they will have to answer to the police."
Read: South African soccer chief suspended in match-fixing scandal
In its initial statement, the NFF described the results as "scandalous".
The material benefit for whichever side won promotion was minimal, says Olajire, and the players themselves would gain little by stepping up a division. Even wages for those playing in Nigeria's elite Premier League rarely top $200 per month.
"Getting into the (fifth) division is no great shakes financially," the NFF media spokesman said.
"Even clubs in the second division struggle to make ends meet. There is sponsorship for teams in the Premier League but very little compared to what they pay to play games around the country."
Football's world governing body FIFA is also interested in what action the NFF takes.
Italian football clubs raided by police Turkey's football fans join protest World Sport Presents: Racism in Football FIFA pass racism reforms
"The matter is firstly the responsibility of the Nigerian Football [Federation]," FIFA told CNN in a statement. "Therefore FIFA is currently monitoring the situation and waiting for action taken by the Nigerian [federation]."
As they entered the third and final round of matches to determine which team would gain promotion to the Nationwide League Division 3, Plateau United and Police Machine were level on points, goal difference and goals scored.
Both sides had managed a total of just two goals in their previous two games but at halftime in the decisive matches, Plateau United were 7-0 up and holding the advantage as their opponents had scored one fewer.
The second half witnessed a tsunami of goals, with United netting on 72 occasions and Police Machine plundering 61 strikes themselves.
Police Matter
One thorny issue for those leading the inquiry is that Yola-based Police Machine are a side that represent Nigeria's police force.
"This will be a very dispassionate job," the NFF's Olajire added. "We believe the police will do a fair job, no matter that a police team is involved.
"I want to assure you that this matter will interest the Director General of police, Mohammed Abubakar, who is a former member of the NFF board."
CNN tried to contact police authorities in Nigeria but they were not immediately available for comment. Neither were officials from clubs that traditionally lack presence both domestically and online.
News of what leading NFF official Mike Umeh has called a "scandal of huge proportions" come in a year when Nigerian football has been on the up.
Earlier this year, the West African country won the Africa Cup of Nations when beating Burkina Faso in the final, the Super Eagles' first continental title since 1994 and their third overall.
However, Olajire does not believe the playoff farce will be of any detriment to the standing of Nigerian football around the world.
"You have people who try to break the law everywhere. What matters are the steps that are taken next. We want to assure you that the NFF is on top of this."

Politics / Amnesty International, human Rights Watch,8 Others Ask GEJ To Veto Anti-gay Bill by SherlockHolmes1(m): 6:25pm On Jun 05, 2013
The groups stated their position in a statement on Wednesday.
A group of 10 local and international human rights organisations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately veto the recently passed ant-gay bill by the National Assembly describing the bill as “draconian” and a “throwback to the past decades under military rule when civil rights were treated with contempt.”
The House of representative, taking a cue from the Senate, on May 30 passed the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill. The bill imposes a prison sentence of 14 years on anyone found guilty of engaging in same sex relationship and a 10 years prison sentence to anyone who witnesses, aid and abet, or “registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organizations” or “makes a direct or indirect public show of same sex amorous relationship.”
In a joint statement released Wednesday, the organisations said the “new bill that would formalize discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people and have wide-ranging effects on civil liberties in the country.”
The organisations said if Mr. Jonathan signs the bill into law, it would “criminalize freedom of speech, association, and assembly.”
“It would provide for prison sentences for anyone who speaks out in support of, meets with, or forms a group advocating for the rights of LGBTI people. It criminalizes the lives of LGBTI people, but the damage it would cause extends to every single Nigerian,” said Lucy Freeman, Deputy Director of the African Programme of Amnesty International.
“It undermines basic freedoms that Nigeria’s civil society has long fought to defend. The civil rights of Nigerians cannot simply be legislated away. “It undermines basic freedoms that Nigeria’s civil society has long fought to defend. The civil rights of Nigerians cannot simply be legislated away,” she said.
“The loosely defined terms of the law mean that a large number of people will be under suspicion of cohabiting as same-sex couples or supporting same-sex relationships,” said Adebisi Alimi, a Nigerian gay and civil rights activist., quoted by Amnesty International.
The organisations also said, if signed into law, the bill will have far reaching effect such as hampering the work of health workers helping to roll back the scourge of HIV/AIDS in the country. According to The National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, 3.4 million Nigerians lives with HIV/AIDS making the country the second largest country with people living with the disease.
“The proposed law would hinder such efforts by criminalizing those who conduct outreach to LGBTI groups. It would drive some groups affected by the epidemic further underground for fear of imprisonment,” they said.

Politics / Boko Haram Gets Sponsorship From Algeria - FG by SherlockHolmes1(m): 3:42pm On May 10, 2013
Federal Government, yesterday, told a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja that investigations revealed that the Islamist sect, Boko Haram, received sponsorship from another terrorist organisation based in Algeria.
The Federal Government, which made the disclosure on a day the high court commenced trial of one of alleged kingpins of the sect, Kabiru Umar, a.k.a Kabiru Sokoto, who allegedly masterminded the Christmas day bomb blast that killed about 44 persons and wounded 75 others at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church at Madalla, Niger State, in 2011, gave the name of the Algerian terrorist group as Muslimiyama.
Witness’ account
A masked witness, who was identified as Mr. XYZ in his testimony, further told the court that the sect not only received funds from the foreign terror network, but also robbed Christians whenever the need for money arose.
He added that the accused person, in a statement he made on January 14, 2012, confessed that it was in the process of sharing a particular fund that was received from Muslimiyama, that the Boko Haram sect became factionalised.
Narrating how Kabiru Sokoto was caught, the witness, who told the court that he was a terrorism expert, said the accused person had confessed that he was inducted into the sect by Hameel Abdulrazak in 2007, noting that prior to that time, the accused worked as a laboratory assistant at a Specialist Hospital in Sokoto State.

State of Emergency Likely in Borno ad Jonathan Cuts Short South Africa Trip to Return Home

President Goodluck Jonathan who was to proceed from South Africa where he has been attending the World Economic Forum, to Namibia on a State Visit, has cut short his trip to return to Nigeria to deal with the worsening security crisis in Borno state where members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, have caused havoc especially in Bama town where they killed tens of security agents and many innocent civilians.

The president's actions have prompted fears in some quarters that he may declare a State of Emergency in Borno state. Some activists have of late been calling for such an action saying that the situation there has edge repeated beyond what the state government can handle.

There has been a gradually increasing insurgency in some parts of the North especially after inciting comments by prominent Northern leaders during the last Nigerian elections where a particularly influential leader said the North was "determined to make Nigeria ungovernable for Jonathan".

Below is the presidency's statement on the president's return;

Politics / Private Jet Owners Can Airlift Friends, Associates – MD NAMA by SherlockHolmes1(m): 8:18am On May 09, 2013
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nnamdi Udoh on Tuesday refuted recent media reports that private jet owners cannot carry their friends and associates in their aircraft.

Mr Udoh, who was a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, said apart from their family members, private jet owners can carry their friends and associate as long as they meet some basic requirements.

He said, “That aircraft owner must have an operations department, who understand what the law of operations means. That aircraft owner must have an airworthiness certificate.”

The other requirements according to the NAMA boss are that the aircraft owner must have an insurance that protect him/her in case of an accident. The jet owner must also submit a manifest.

The long awaited National Civil Aviation Policy, 2013, which took the Federal Government over one year to prepare, was finally unveiled last Friday with severe rules for private jet owners in the country.

The policy barred individuals with private jets from carrying their friends and business associates on board the aircraft, stating that only members of their families are allowed aboard.

It states further that companies with private jets are permitted to carry only their employees or members of the Boards of Directors.

Moreover, the policy also directed that the identities of all passengers on-board any private jet must be made known through a manifest before air traffic control clearance will be sought.

It states, “Approval or clearance from the Director-General, NCAA, will not be required from Nigerians operating non-revenue flights with appropriate insurance policies in the following cases: “For private aircraft owned or leased by individuals, only the family members of the owner/lessee of the aircraft will be permitted on board as passengers; “For private aircraft owned or leased by companies or corporate entities, only the employees and members of the Board of Directors of the company will be permitted on board as passengers.

“For aircraft belonging to non-scheduled or scheduled operators, only the employees and members of the Board of Directors of the company or the corporation may be permitted on board as passengers; all operators will declare the identities of all passengers on non-revenue charter flights in the appropriate general declaration forms prior to obtaining ATC clearance.

“Nigerian carriers operating revenue passenger charter flights will be required to have a current non-scheduled or scheduled operator permit with operations manual that contains flight duty time limitations, which will be strictly monitored on regular basis.”

Politics / Buhari To Ibb "Once A Maradona, Always A Maradona" by SherlockHolmes1(m): 2:05pm On May 03, 2013
The maiden edition of Mr Sam Nda-Isaiah Lecture Series in Minna, Nigeeri State,
brought to the fore the atmosphere of friendship between former head of state,
General Muhammadu Buhari, and former military president General Ibrahim
Babangida as the latter conceded the chairmanship of the occasion to
Buhari.

Babangida was reluctant to speak at the occasion as the chairman,
but when pressed upon, got up and stated that he could not be chairman in an
occasion where Buhari was present.

“I can’t be a chairman at this
occasion when General Buhari is here, and this is for two reasons: one he was 5
and I was 6, and those of you in the military understand what I mean; in other
words he is my senior. Secondly, he was the head of state before me, so it is my
pleasure and honour to formally invite General Muhammadu Buhari to declare this
conference open,” IBB said, conceding the chairmanship to Buhari.

Buhari who got up to accept the offer said in the same hilarious mood: “I think that
who is a Maradona is always a Maradona; it is very clear to me that General
Babangida is the chairman, but since I came in here, he said to me he wouldn’t
be the chairman because I was his senior and in the military, things are
considered in terms of seniority”.

He, however, added that Babangida, refused to hand over his prepared speech for the occasion.

Buhari congratulated the Mr Nda Isaiah, chairman of Chairman LEADERSHIP Group, for the
honour done him by the youths, saying that he deserved it due to his courage and
consistency.

According to Buhari, Sam Nda-Isaiah has contributed so much to make sure that truth is told for the best interest of the nation because he has always put government and people in authority in check.

Politics / Violence In Kogi Community As Fulani Herdsmen Kill Farmer by SherlockHolmes1(m): 5:46am On Apr 26, 2013
LOKOJA — Violence erupted, yesterday, in Egbe, the commercial hub of Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State following the killing, Wednesday, of a farmer allegedly by Fulani herdsmen.

According to an eye witness, Mr. Tope Kekereawo, the deceased, whose name was simply given as John, was killed in his farm at about 8 am, just eight days after his wedding.

Kekereawo who disclosed that he shared farm demarcation with the deceased said he had gone to the farm with the late John and when they first sighted the herdsmen in their farms, a brief argument ensued after which they all departed.

He said the deceased had complained about cows eating up his farm products and warned the herdsmen who were two in number to depart.

He said: “However, five minutes after, I was working in my farm when I heard John crying for help. I rushed there only to meet him rolling in the pool of his blood. He must have been cut in the stomach as parts of his bowel was exposed.”

The witness said he immediately called for assistance from nearby roadside and the victim was rushed to ECWA Hospital, Egbe where he was confirmed dead.

Vanguard gathered that the next day after the manhunt for the culprits did not yield fruit, irate youths in town were said to have turned the heat on Hausa/Fulanis living in the community which led to subsequent burning of the popular Sabo Market at Isaba area of the town, forcing the Hausa traders to scamper for safety.

Police spokesman, Umanu Nwaneri, who confirmed the incident said two persons had been arrested in connection with the crisis.

Though he refused to mention the casualty figure, a local source confirmed to Vanguard that four other persons were killed in retaliation, bringing the casualties from the two camps to five.
