It's been a nice conversation. I wish you the best as you find peace and purpose. Have a great week cool

tctrills:
So, some sisters may own cars and others may not right?
How about things like designer handbags?
Christianity EtcRe: What Is Actually The Work Of Reverend Sisters? by Shikena(m): 12:24pm On Apr 12
Depending on the religious congregation. Keep in mind that not all orders have vow of poverty.

Also, you may not have full details of actual ownership. Vehicle may belong to the church or the religious congregation. In addition, some of these nuns are from rich background. If the superior permits, a car gift from family may be accepted for community use.

The details and facts is often the missing link when things don't add up.

tctrills:
So the reverend sisters that own cars have broken their vow right?
Christianity EtcRe: What Is Actually The Work Of Reverend Sisters? by Shikena(m): 12:06pm On Apr 12
If a nun who is part of a congregation requiring a vow of poverty acquires personal property for exclusive use them that's a violation of her vow.
Even Jesus had a Judas when he assembled his team.

Most modern reverend sisters definitely abide by this vow. Though negative news is more attractive to people.

However, to be open-minded, I don't know where you live so cultural influence might be a factor but it's not the norm everywhere. I have lived in 3 different continents and that's my observation.

tctrills:
renunciation as a member of a religious order of the right as an individual to own property.

I guess this is what you mean.

But then if reverend sisters are still able to own property which that are, this definition doesn't fit.

Again, the Morden reverend sister or father do not met this definition.

Meriam-Webster.com:

poverty
noun
pov·er·ty ˈpä-vər-tē

1a
: the state of one who lacks a sufficient amount of money or material possessions : the state of being poor
specifically : the state of one whose income is below the poverty line
living in poverty
b
: renunciation as a member of a religious order of the right as an individual to own property

2
: scarcity, dearth
a poverty of information about the disease
a poverty of imagination

3a
: debility due to malnutrition
b
: lack of fertility

tctrills:
You are right, let me look at the dictionary.

Poverty is defined by more than just a lack of money; it is categorized by the severity and the standard of living relative to a specific society.

Poverty is the state of lacking sufficient money, resources, or material comforts to meet basic needs, including food, clean water, shelter, and clothing. It extends beyond mere financial scarcity to include limited access to education, healthcare, and social participation. Common synonyms include destitution, indigence, penury, and want.

tctrills:
Haba, I am open minded but if you are trying to sell a new definition to poverty, you need to do better.
Words have meanings. One day, I could just claim that good means evil.
When we change the meaning of a thing, it could be deceitful
Have you checked your dictionary? Webster.com may help on definitions of poverty.

Yes but not the only definition. A simple look at a dictionary would help.
Christianity EtcRe: What Is Actually The Work Of Reverend Sisters? by Shikena(m): 11:40am On Apr 12
Well summarized.

Mindlog:
The below captures it better.

"Reverend sisters and nuns often receive stipends or salaries if they work in secular or church-affiliated roles (such as teaching, nursing, or administration), but these funds typically go directly to their religious congregation. Due to a vow of poverty, they receive a small allowance for personal necessities rather than retaining personal wealth, with the congregation covering all living expenses, housing, and healthcare".

tctrills:
Poverty from the Nigerian sense. You mean there was an era where the word poverty meant a different thing?
Please educate me about that. When was that?
An average Nigerian thinks of poverty strictly in terms of economics or finance or essentially, struggling to survive.
Christianity EtcRe: What Is Actually The Work Of Reverend Sisters? by Shikena(m): 11:36am On Apr 12
tctrills:
I have no problem with the chastity and obedience but the poverty vow, that's a bit dishonest since like you say, it has nothing to do with actual poverty.
This is not a good approach to learning.

Poverty in this context is not restricted to economic state. A vital component of research and knowledge is an open mind. Don't force your quest for knowledge into a pre-defined box.

I schooled in a Catholic university, that also runs a convent.

Either they're in dalliance with co sisters, other reverend brothers and fathers, or they're looking for young fresh male students to oil their engines.

Some even scheme to get into juicy offices like the accounts departments or the school microfinance bank, after a while that they've earned the trust of the chancellor, they disappear with the schools treasury and go and marry.
The cultural influence cannot be isolated from most human undertakings.

The behavioral pattern you just described is definitely alien to many people but may be the norm in some parts of the world.
Christianity EtcRe: What Is Actually The Work Of Reverend Sisters? by Shikena(m): 11:25am On Apr 12
tctrills:
You can do all these without being a reverend sister. Lastly, why take vows of poverty? Is that even of God?
Terminology from a totally different era. It's not poverty in the "Nigerian" sense as we know it. It's more of detachment from property acquisition. They are well taken care of and whatever gifts, donations or payment received from jobs belong to the community.

This is what Sowore is always addressing but as real Nigerians, you are incapable of knowing your true friends.

Ordering an arrest is illegal and judges incarcerating people for prolonged periods prior to final judgment is unethical, unless it impacts national security. Let's fight wrong processes together instead of brainless bandwagoning.

This is coming from me, a fan of Wike, Mr Projects.

Where is Wike's performance report card in FCT between January and March 2026? We are not hearing about projects anymore. That should be the priority, beer parlour talks should be secondary but trust our simpleton journalists.

An average hardworking and honest Nigerian is already outside working diligently. Most of them are not celebrities. No one notices them as they are not newsworthy, they keep moving in spite of daily challenges.

BusinessRe: Nigerian States Return To Borrowing Despite FAAC Windfall by Shikena(m): 2:47pm On Apr 03
Oyo State is shocking to me.

A Seyi Makinde that was widely supported actually led the battle against the independence of local governments. In general, he started on the right track but started deviating with some head-scratching decisions especially in terms of developmental projects. He has done a great job with many roads in Ibadan metro, and some key link roads in Oyo, Iseyin, Ogbomoso etc.

The sour tastes are his actions with regards to the funds meant for local governments, which he has unrepentantly cornered, shady acquisition of lands and properties in Ibadan, mismanagement of issues around federal government intervention fund for Bodija explosion victims, among others.

This is not just for you at individual level, it is also critical for the economic well-being of families in a country where majority are relying on their children as retirement plan. Please have mercy on the younger generation, and younger generation should please have mercy on your unborn children.

The global population is much larger and competition is higher, cost of healthcare is a huge burden and should only be for unavoidable health conditions. Self-inflicted or avoidable health issues should be avoided via healthy habits. Above all, the pain is not desirable.

Reduce the sugar indulgence, stop inhaling filth in the name of smoking, and stop drinking undiluted ogogoro if you must drink. Be disciplined!

CelebritiesRe: “Yoruba People Beg A Lot” — Peller Faces Backlash Over Controversial Remarks by Shikena(m): 3:28pm On Mar 28
I am Yoruba and I totally agree with him. We have totally pooped on our value system with shameless begging and many of our people today even mock those working diligently.

The truth is bitter by nature and design. Atelewo eni ki tan ni je.
Ise loogun is.
Oruko rere o San ju wura ati fadaka lo.
We have rubbished all these Omoluabi sayings over the years.

Peller himself is a prime example of this decadence, he is a beggar. Yet, it was shocking to see video clips of a young boy harassing him for money in a core traditional Yoruba city like Oyo. Someone like that will have no problem switching to kidnapping and armed robbery.

It is not too late for Yorubas but we should not allow the dishonest ones destroy our values. Unfortunately, most of our palaces are now in the hands of fraudsters and people of weak character with zero integrity.
