Car TalkRe: How Useful AreCar Navigation Systems On Nigerian Roads? by shockreaction(m):
I use Nokia Maps navigation on my N97 which is actually fairly accurate and works really well. I've only used it in Lagos, however, so I'm not sure about how accurate the maps for other cities are.

You have to update the application to 3.0, and the maps are available to download for free using the Ovi Suite or Nokia Maps downloader. The only thing you need to pay for is the subscription for turn-by-turn navigation and it's also quite affordable. Comes to about 7500 a year or so.

I made a blog post about it here:

Hasn't affected my life in any way, thankfully. Didn't invest any money. Protip: It pays to be skeptical when dealing with anything Nigerian, ALL THE TIME.

GamingWhere Can I Purchase A Chess Board? by shockreaction(op): 7:29pm On May 01, 2009
I'm looking to buy a proper chess board. Preferably magnetic. And no, not from the hawkers on the streets.

Which stores can I find this? Or does anyone have any for sale? I want a new one, nothing fairly used.

Thanks.

Such is life. If you don't take charge, you'll be kicked around like a ball. I lolled at your story.

In any case, life isn't fair. Deal with it, suck it up, do something about it or move on. It's all up to you.

Anyway, the thing I like about it is that it's plenty fast. And very responsive. I'm not too excited about it but I'm pretty impressed so far.

WebmastersRe: Which Is The Fastest Internet Connection In Nigeria by shockreaction(m): 8:51am On Jun 14, 2008
@agboifo: My problem with the Glo platform is the bandwidth limit. Hell, I could easily exceed 10GB of usage in a week. If this bandwidth limit gets removed, then by all means, I'll jump on the platform.

WebmastersRe: Which Is The Fastest Internet Connection In Nigeria by shockreaction(m): 7:52pm On Jun 13, 2008
Visafone EVDO is NOT good. It sucks monkey balls in terms of speed. It's pretty much like the Starcomms EVDO repackaged with a new name.

Now, don't get me wrong, the service is stable and reliable. However, I have a couple of peeves:

1. I paid for the Gold service which has a data rate of 300kbps*. This should give me a max download speed of 37.5KB/s** (300/8; Note: 1 kilobyte = 8 kilobits). I've only ever got a max download speed of about 22KB/s. And attaining this speed during downloads is even rare. On average, I get about 15KB/s. This is just not good enough.

2. NAT. How hard is it for an ISP to purchase IP blocks? Seriously. I want a direct connection to the Internet, and not through some private nework.

Now, the reason I decided to try the Visafone service was because the Starcomms EVDO service went from fast (I was able to get a max download speed of 200KB/s last year) to slow (recently, max download speed was about 20 to 25KB/s), and the NAT thing. However, it turns out they're pretty much about the same service with different names.

Good luck with your choice.

*kbps = kilobits per second
*KB/s = kilobytes per second
TravelFg Refuses Delta Airlines Right To Fly New York-lagos Route (why, Nigeria, Why?) by shockreaction(op): 7:45pm On Jun 13, 2008
http://www.businessdayonline.com/Travel-and-Aviation/9299.html

Of particular interest is this:
Business Day gathered last night that the ministry of transportation did not give any reasons for the decision which some analysts described as another “shakedown.”
But a source in the ministry told Business Day in Abuja that government’s refusal was as a result of “the domineering attitude of Delta Airlines”.
“You know none of our airlines has started operating into the US, despite being designated by the United States government. The US is even asking our airlines to lease aircraft from their own airlines or other airlines that have met their standard.”
The source who pleaded anonymity informed Business Day that government may be tactically protecting interests of the Nigerian designated carriers to the US.
It would be recalled that Delta Air began direct daily flights from Lagos to Atlanta on December 4, 2007 with a promise to look into operating the New York route from June 2008.
In other words, there's really no reason for Delta to be refused the right to fly the route. And I really don't see how this is a reasonable decision.

What are your thoughts on this?

Lol. When are you guys going to get over this issue? Just let it go. There are more important things to be bothered about.

I read through the posts and someone was suggesting that we should stand up for our fellow Nigerians. Seriously, the dude broke the law (effectively committing a crime), and you expect me to stand up for him in such a situation? No way, dude. Not in this lifetime.
