A concerned Nigerian Mom on Ebola and resumption of schools

Article below is written by a concerned Nigerian mum named Efe Farinre. It seems a lot of mums are against the resumption of primary and secondary schools on September 22nd despite the Minister of Health saying there's currently no single case of Ebola in Nigeria. Anyway read this mum's concern below and tell us what you think.
I just received a mail confirming that schools will re-open on Monday 22nd September, 2014. After reading it, I felt compelled to put on paper my thoughts since the announcement of same by the Federal Government. One thing that struck me is that I am yet to receive information about confirmed (not advised/suggested) nationwide measures that have been put in place to ensure the safety of our children from the Ebola virus upon resumption at school in two weeks." Continue...
The reason for moving the resumption date forward by three weeks was given as “containment of the Ebola virus in Nigeria”. How does that statement stand in view of the present situation in Port Harcourt?

I returned to Lagos from a week’s trip to Abuja on Friday 5th September, 2014. The first issue I had, which I mentioned to an airport official was that just before boarding the planes (in Lagos and Abuja), passengers (adults and children) are given a rub-down. The officials checking our bodies were wearing gloves. However, the same gloves were worn while touching a good number of people.
The officials were protected, but how about the passengers being touched with the gloves that had been used to touch many others? On arrival at the Abuja airport, the temperature of every passenger was taken before entry was granted into the Federal Capital Territory. Of concern is that on departure from Abuja, this was not the case. Worse still, Lagos State that had the index case of Ebola welcomed us without any precautionary measures of any kind. We simply picked up our bags and walked into the city. With instances where infected people have traveled from one state to another, we should be worried.

It is understandable that we want our children educated, but we need to be reminded that we can only educate the healthy and living. Ebola virus in Nigeria is an unprecedented occurrence that has to be handled as such. “Better safe than sorry” should be the motto here. So far, we have been blessed in the manner that no child has contacted the disease. Children play indiscriminately with one another.
A child of what age can be guaranteed to identify the symptoms of the Ebola and keep away from it? How many times do we have to remind our children not to put their hands in their mouths and cover their mouths when they yawn, cough or sneeze? How do we tell them not to play with their friends as they are used to or not to show concern if one of them gets hurt and is bleeding? How can we really be sure that our 3 to 16 year olds would be safe from Ebola in a place where we cannot control who they come in contact with; a place where they share toilets, eat and play with others. How about our babies at crèche who we can’t even attempt to explain this to and who cannot verbalize their day at “school”?

I am the typical “Nigerian Mum”….ensuring my kids are on top of their school work, home work and leisure activities. At this time, I must pause and realize that prevention is the only option here as there is no cure! If the children have to stay home a little longer while this epidemic is eradicated or contained NATIONWIDE then so be it. If this implies a shorter Christmas break this year or just four weeks of Summer break next year to make up for the lost education time, so be it.
One thing I am sure no parent wants to deal with is the anxiety if a child comes home with a fever. We all know that at school, children love to share all things with one another from the water in their bottles to the flu. Then again, which parents want to have to take their child to the hospital these days?

If the doctor in Port Harcourt could go to work for some days after being infected with Ebola then we should be more concerned. This was an educated person, in fact someone who knew the consequences of his actions more than most, but he still put others at risk. Worst of all, these were colleagues and patients who could not tell from his demeanor that he was sick. They trusted him and could never have imagined that he would expose them to a deadly virus.

To our leaders, I ask what control measures against Ebola have been put in place in ALL schools, particularly the government and state schools? I visited a private school in Abuja and before we could go in, our temperatures where taken. We should remember that even if private schools are well catered for, the children of our drivers, domestic helps and “junior staff” attend public schools.

How many infrared thermometers have been distributed across these schools in Nigeria? Who would be responsible for taking the temperature of EVERYONE going into ALL schools? Since a symptom of Ebola is sudden fever, how often would the temperatures of students need to be taken in the course of the day? What Ebola emergency responses have been set up by location of ALL schools in Nigeria? What awareness has been carried out in the villages and remote areas of the country, where we have schools too? How will adherence to control measures (if and when they are in place) against Ebola in Nigerian schools be monitored, by whom and how frequently? What steep penalties have been put in place for schools that default?

As a parent I want to see action and not hear words! In a country where a nurse can flee quarantine and a primary contact with the index case can evade detection, with both of them traveling across state lines, I demand action from government before our children are asked to return to school. It’s not enough to ask “Ministries of Education in the 36 states of Nigeria to appoint desk officers on Ebola before resumption or that they should ensure that at least two staff in each school (public and private) are trained by appropriate health workers on how to handle any suspected case of Ebola, should in case there’s one or workers should embark on immediate sensitization of teaching and non-teaching staff in schools on preventive measures”, ALL STATE MINISTRIES OF EDUCATION and SCHOOLS (PUBLIC & PRIVATE) MUST be MANDATED and SUFFICENTLY EQUIPPED with ALL RESOURCES to ensure Ebola virus does not hit our children.

In Nigeria, it’s just schools that are closed. In some other African countries, communities are closed-in.

Now is the time to speak up, so that never happens to us. In my opinion, there are still too many unanswered questions and too many checks to be put in place before schools can resume. Parents, let’s preserve our lineage. Government, let’s preserve the future of Nigeria. Together, let’s preserve the lives of ALL Nigerian children.

Thewhizzkid1: Nigeria has scored a partial victory against Ebola
as there are now no confirmed cases of the
disease remaining in the country.
This was disclosed by the Health Minister, Onyebuchi
Chukwu yesterday, September 10, 2014.
Professor Chukwu also announced that the wife of the
late Port Harcourt doctor, Iyke Enemuo, had been
successfully treated and discharged.
The minister said via a press statement that the total
number of EVD survivors in Nigeria is now 12 while 7
people died of the disease.
He stated:
“The total number of deaths from EVD in Nigeria
stands at seven, Five of these died in Lagos, one
in a private hospital, the index (first) case Mr.
Sawyer, and the other four in the isolation ward
in Lagos State.
“Two of the seven died in Port Harcourt, the
medical doctor, who died in a private hospital and
the contact, a patient in the hospital at the time
the doctor was also on admission, who died in the
isolation ward in Rivers State, “
“The total number of patients who have been
successfully managed and discharged is now 10.”

Nairaland / General / Re: Keshi Recalls Uche Brothers For South Africa Clash by sidosky(m): 6:11pm On Sep 09, 2014

KESSHI DISMISSES UCHE RUSE

Head coach of the Nigerian national football team, Stephen Keshi has laughed off reports that he handed invitations to Ikechukwu Uche and his brother, Kalu for Wednesday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa.

The “Big Boss” said he was shocked at the reports as it was simply not feasible to call up the duo for the game against the Bafana Bafana.

“I have heard it (the reports) myself and I just laughed because those who should know that we have no time between our last game and the match against Bafana Bafana are the same people misleading Nigerians.

“These players are professional footballers and there are processes for invitation, you don’t just bump into them and say come and play, that is very unprofessional and I never did that,” Keshi explained.

Nigeria go into Wednesday’s clash against Bafana Bafana on the heels of a humiliating 2-3 home loss to Congo last Saturday and Keshi is looking for a quick response from his charges.

“We are the champions of Africa and we must start showing that not only against Bafana but in all our remaining games,” he said.

Goalkeeper and captain, Austin Ejide also moved to voice his sentiments ahead of the game against South Africa insisting that the contest will be a difficult one

“There are no easy games again but we have our backs to the wall now and we must do what we have to do to move on in the chase to qualify for the Nations Cup,” he said.

South Africa have never defeated Nigeria in a competitive game at senior level.

alanjack:

The Uche brothers have been given a late minute call-up by the Nigeria head coach ahead of Wednesday's Africa Nations Cup qualifier against South Africa

Coach Stephen Keshi has recalled Villarreal forward Ikechukwu Uche and Al Rayyan SC of Qatar star Kalu Uche for Super Eagles all important Africa Cup of Nations game against South Africa on Wednesday.

Nigeria lost 3-2 at home on Saturday to Claude Le Roy’s Congo in Calabar, and will be hoping to bounce back towards qualifying for Morocco 2015.

The duo were brought in to replace Uche Nwofor and El Kanemi Warriors goalkeeper David Obiazor who were part of the Eagles that played against the Red Devils.

Keshi last Wednesday revealed the pint-sized player was not invited to be part of the team to play Congo and South Africa in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers because he wanted to be begged.

"He was supposed to be part of the team that is presently in camp but he said we must beg him first to play for Nigeria because he was left out of some competitions but I can’t beg anyone to play for Nigeria, impossible. That’s why he is not here,” said Keshi in a press release by Super Eagles media officer Ben Alaiya.

Uche fell out with the ‘Big Boss’ during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and has been snubbed since, missing the Confederations Cup and 2014 Fifa World Cup despite being Nigeria's highest scoring striker in Europe in that period.

Nairaland / General / Re: Cools Things You Can Do With Google by sidosky(m): 6:24pm On Aug 29, 2014
DStarrx: 12. Know popular books, movies and works by famous authors, movie makers, actors, artists etc
Are you an inquisitive knowledge grabber like me? Knowing and possibly reading all the major works of your favourite author(s) is now a click away. A compendium of works from the world’s leading authors, movie makers, artists and several others is available on Google if you search for it. Search for terms like this: “Books by Achebe,” “Movies by Spielberg” and “Works by Michelangelo.”

13. Know a movie’s casts
Google something like this: “Casts of the Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Casts of Hercules” and “Casts of Half of A Yellow Sun.”

14. Translate words
Most translation applications available online are unreliable and full of calamitous errors. Google Translate has proven to be one of the most reliable (though it’s not 100% accurate) and it has just been added to the search engine. To translate words into any language of your choice use keywords like “Translate word to French” or simple type “Translate” into search box. For example, google “Translate book to Igbo.”

15. Check a flight status
This is really advanced for most Nigerian airlines because of the lack of an adequate online tracking technology. If you are lucky to be in the diaspora, it is possible to find out the status of a flight by typing in its flight number. For example, type in “Virgin Atlantic 201.”

16. Get local cinema listings
Like checking a flight’s status, this functionality is not really available for Nigeria, but it sure will in the future. Google the name of the city or it’s postal/zip code to know its cinema listings for the weekend just like this: “Movies for Miami.”

17. Extract data online
The work of statisticians and researchers has been made somewhat easier. These data can be economic or demographic. Use search terms like “Population of India” “Unemployment rate of Britain” “GDP growth rate of Nigeria” to get on with it/get this done.

18. Track your package online
To track a package sent through one of the popular delivery agents out there like DHL, type in the tracking number in the serach box. For example, google “1D4678767292920862″

19. Play a game online
Bored? Why not play a game…. on Google? There some arcade games and brain teasers you can play on the Google search engine, one of them is the once popular Pacman. Type in “Play Pacman on Google” and play.

20. Get stock quotes
Get the stock quotes of your favourite listed companies on Google. Use the format “Stock quote Company.” For example, google “Stock quote Apple,” “Stock quote Berkshire Hathaway” or “Stock quote Microsoft.”

21. Discover your IP address
Type “IP address” into the search box to know your device’s public internet protocol address.

22. Highlight and ignore words
To highlight important words that must be displayed in your search results, put them in quote. For example, typing “St. John “apostle” ” (please ignore the first and last quotation marks) will ensure that all results displayed by Google will have the search term “apostle” in them. This helps you to narrow the search down to exactly what you are looking for. In the example above, searching only for St. John will display results about St. John’s church, St. John’s cathedral, the city of St. John, St. John the Baptist and many others while all you are looking for is information about St. John the Apostle. Also, to ignore words that are irrelevant to your search, add the minus sign (-). For example, searching for “Education in developing countries -Nigeria” will remove all the web pages that have the word “Nigeria” when displaying the results.

Note: Most of these tricks only work on high-end smartphones, tablets and personal computers.

Politics / Re: N'delta Army Will Help Boko Haram Finish Nigeria by sidosky(m): 3:45pm On Aug 27, 2014
Songsmith1: I don't believe in the "Federal Government is the Boko" hypothesis being majorly sold by the Opposition camp. However, the Presidency may not have a hand in the initiation and thus, the perpetuation of the Boko Haram insurgency that has brought the Nigerian army to it's knees and finally reduced the so-called "Giant of africa" to "giANT of Africa".I strongly believe the President along with his regional agenda is making a very good use of the insurgency to actualise their current cravings for total independence of the south south.

The billions of Naira budgeted to fight BH remain "abducted" just like the "chibok chicks" it is being disbursed to rescue; Just the same way those allocated to curb the Ebola insurgency get "Quarantined" in some private pockets, the same way the very victims of the Ebola disease are Quarantined!

Dear Nigerian youths, If you don't believe this, just keep it in your memory and please remember to qoute me when it inevitably happens!
The periodic drum beats of war being sounded by the Niger delta millitants and their politically and financially emboldened leaders should never be mistaken to be mere barking of some toothless dogs.

The South South has a grand plan to break from Nigeria just the way the Ibos attempted in the 60's.Meanwhile, Where Biafra failed, Niger deltans have learnt a great lesson. They are now using the presidency in the region to do what can be described as "Pre-civil war tactical manouvring of the Nigeria army"

If Jonathan wins 2015 general elections, it will afford the region another four years to completely destroy whatever remains of Nigerian army. The army would continue to be demoralised by the Government purposeful failing in upgrading their armoury and thereby endangering the lives of the soldiers. By then, Nigerian army would have become a complete shadow of her glorious past, being ridiculously vulnerable to a disgraceful defeat by any internal insurrection or external aggression.

You should know that, the Niger Delta is being armed heavily at moment, consignments of weapons keep entering the Niger delta through so many points. Those that come through lagos ports are tagged "not to be open, belongs to the federal government" "For general x,y,z, stay away". These vessels are usually cleared by men in military uniform backed by that nebulous phrase- "Order from Above"

If Jonathan loses the 2015 elections, the secession declaration will begin and the Nigerian army won't be a match for the Deltan army, who will fight to complete the breakage process in case an attempt is made to thwart their agenda militarily. Don't think the best option is to ensure the president does not win, because the result is still the same! Our military today is already weakened.

We can never stand another insurrection even if our President humbles himself now and begs Shekau for forgiveness on behalf of Nigerians. Should President Abubakar Shekau of the Gwoza Emirate, Borno State, Nigeria, decide to call the Gwoza millitary back to barracks, It will take some few years for Nigerian millitary to recover from the current defeat and it's attendant disgrace.

If Jonathan wins 2015, declaration will be delayed till 2019 while Nigerian army will keep being destroyed ahead of the grand breakage plan. So either way, the result is the same.

Ebola is the new reason racists will use to justify their disgusting behaviour!

The Korea Times is reporting that a restaurant in Seoul has instituted a “No Africans allowed” policy for fear of contracting the Ebola virus.

Two signs displayed at JR Pub read, “We apologize, but due to Ebola Virus, we are not accepting Africans at the moment.”

Since the restaurant doesn’t have a sure fire way of identifying Africans, I guess pretty much anyone that is black will not be served and allowed into the restaurant.

This stinks of RACISM! No difference between this and “No Blacks Allowed” in Apartheid South Africa!

As Africa’s largest economy Nigeria should make a move to ban all South Korean businesses operating in the country.

This rubbish needs to stop! The last place someone that is suffering from Ebola will go to is a restaurant, especially as one of the early symptoms of the disease is lack of appetite!

Two weeks ago, a South Korean university rescinded its invite to three Nigerian students , the reason given was that they were coming from an “Ebola region” - See more at: http://netnaij.com/forum2_theme_110640624.xhtml?tema=293#sthash.Q3tvWC4H.dpuf

Politics / Re: Why The Noise About Palestine? by sidosky(m): 2:13pm On Aug 05, 2014
rickkid: For the past few days, I have observed Nigerians online and on the street passionately discussing the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and I have just one question - What in God's name is it to you? How is it your business?
How many of you know that the land they are fighting over was once occupied by Africans who looked just like you, and that invading Arabs (now called 'Palestinians') committed genocide against us while claiming North Africa and the Middle East? Do you know that Israel supported apartheid in South Africa and currently engage in forced sterilisation of female African immigrants to keep their Black population down? Do you know that both Arabs and Israelis despsise Black people equally? That the Arab word for 'Black man' (Abd) is the same word for 'slave'? That the Jews refer to you as 'Goyim' (Gentile)?
Have you heard of a country called Mauritania? Do you know what they do to Blacks there right now? Do you know that Hamas is their ally? Do you know that the people who owned the most African slaves and built business empires from slavery such as Barclays Bank and Lloyds TSB were all Jews?
So why on earth are you taking sides in a conflict between two people who both think you are primitive monkeys? Or you want to prove them right?
We've lost more lives to violence here over the past 3 years than both Israel and Palestine COMBINED. Why aren't we discussing that? 5,000 African children die avoidable deaths everyday. Why does that not stir up our emotions as much as the death of a few dozen Arab children? Do we view our own lives as worth less than Arab or Israeli lives?
Before this current conflict, Gaza had 24/7 electricity, running water and functioning health services. When have we had that here? In fact when the Palestinians ferry the victims of Israeli airstrikes to hospital, they use ambulances, we see that on tv. When Boko Haram bombed a bus station in Abuja, we were busy loading corpses onto open back Toyota Hilux trucks like meat.
Don't we have worse problems than Israel or Palestine? So why are we here crying more than the bereaved? Do you have any idea how ridiculous you look?
