Wide Jubilation Across Constituency, streets, campaign venue

There was wide jubilation from Koton karfe to Egbe in Yagba West LGA of Kogi West Constituency following the release of Senator Dino Melaye as ordered by an Abuja High Court.

The news of the release of Senator Dino Melaye who has been held captive by the police filtered into Koton karfe when Hon. Shaba Ibrahim was on a campaign tour of Wards, his supporters were thrown into a frenzy mood.
In Lokoja, several beer parlors had the Senator’s supporters pumping champagne, while Okada riders were seen in a procession along cemetery and cinema junctions all in jubilation.

The Dino Melaye campaign organization holding its rally in Bunu district turned the campaign into a dancing and singing, with the people of Bunu describing the court verdict as victory for the Senator ahead of the February election.

In Ayetoro gbede, home town of Senator Melaye, women came out in celebration and described the verdict as a vindication that God has crowned their prayers, promising to deliver massively for the PDP in all the elections.

Our reporter who was in Yagba federal constituency said the streets were filled with people dancing and asked that the Senator in or out of police custody, will win convincingly in the February election.

In a telephone conversation, Chief Shola Ojo, assured that efforts to incarcerate the Senator has further swell his support, promising to deliver the senatorial candidate in the February election.

The Kogi State Government has alleged there are “covert plans by Senator Dino Melaye to cause mayhem and bloodshed in Kogi State . ”
A statement issued on Monday in Lokoja by the spokesman for the governor, Kingsley Fanwo , stated that the office of the State Security Adviser had uncovered “ orchestrated plan to destabilise the state .
He said Melaye , senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District , was set to disturb the peace of the state through violence in the name of political campaigns .

“ According to the highly credible report , the senator is planning to visit the Kupa area in the Lokoja Local Government Area to launch campaign of calumny against the government of Kogi State . The choice of Kupa was informed by the solid support of the APC in the area .

“ It is expected that the people will resist the use of ‘ Dino language ’ on the government , which will lead to attack on the defenceless people by the armed thugs which Dino is planning to convey to the place.
“ The intelligence also revealed that the thugs to be imported from a neighbouring state where a political godfather just lost a House of Reps election, are to wear black T- Shirts with the inscription , ‘ DSS ’ to create an impression that they are security operatives. The thugs are to be conveyed in a white Hilux vehicle. A notorious thug from Lokoja has also been co- opted into the Satanic plan . ”

Fanwo said Melaye , like every other candidate , had the right to campaign for votes but urged the senator to honour the “ process for peaceful campaigns ” by dealing with constituted authorities charged with the responsibility of ensuring peaceful campaigns .

“ A lawmaker cannot continue to be a law - breaker . We are not stopping anyone from peaceful campaigns but government will not tolerate plans that will threaten the lives of the citizens in the name of politics. Kogi State Government values life more than politics . ”

Efforts to get Melaye to react to the allegations through phone calls proved abortive . He also did not respond to a message sent via WhatsApp as of the time of filing this report .

The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kogi State chapter, Dr. Kabiru Zubair, has revealed that 79 medical doctors employed by the state government have resigned their appointments.

Zubair said they resigned in reaction to irregular payment of salaries.

Zubair noted that doctors, who were at the forefront of the struggle for better welfare for health workers, had lost the zeal to fight due to the non-chalant attitude of the government. He said the only available option left was to leave the state civil service.

He said: “As at today, a total of 79 doctors have left Kogi State civil service.

“In the last nine months alone, 27 doctors have resigned from the Kogi State Specialist Hospital (KSSH), Lokoja, including two consultants.

“Forty four have resigned from the state’s Hospitals Management Board (HMB) and eight from the Kogi State University Teaching Hospital, Anyigba.
“More doctors are just waiting for the next available opportunity to leave. The consequences are worsening healthcare indices in the state.

“The vacuum created will ultimately be filled by medical quacks to the detriment of our people and no level of policing can stop it,” he explained.

He said the Kogi NMA had threatened and embarked on several industrial actions in the last one year.
“Even though NMA has dropped the idea of plunging the Kogi health sector into another round of industrial action, NMA is not happy that the government has not reciprocated the gesture by ensuring the regular payment of the salaries of doctors and other healthcare workers in the state.

“We call on the state government to prioritise the payment of doctors and other healthcare workers to abate the current low morale and untold hardship in the health work force,” Zubair said.

He also said the Kogi NMA would not hesitate to ask her members and their stakeholders in 2019 general election to withdraw their support and campaign against any government or individuals that refused to genuinely prioritise healthcare delivery.

He, therefore, urged the government to implement the Universal Healthcare Coverage and ensure the regular payment of the salaries of doctors and other healthcare workers.
