***CONTINUATION*** I looked around. The place was beyond my wildest dreams. A single individual certainly could never own a place like this. There was nothing for me to do than to sit down. A minute later the butler was back with assorted drinks on a tray and snacks and asked me to help myself. I now believed the government had a hand in all these arrangements. And why this interest in me, a poor unknown graduate to play a role in this mighty edifice? I sat down with all those delicacies in front of me but unable to touch even one of them. In my mind I said maybe they were trying to poison me. Good luck doesn't come so easily. Besides, how they had got to know my name, trace me to my school, the politeness on the part of the policeman.......... It just didn't makes sense. There had to be a catch in it somewhere. Is it my ex-girlfriend? No, it can't be her. Besides, I am the one to be after her death not her to be after mine. She cheated on me!. Is it my haters, I have none. Or so i thought. A beep from my pocket jostled me back to reality. The service provider network here was full to its maximum.A message from my mother, one from Daniel and the other from my ex-girlfriend. Perhaps, she is trying to begged. Who knows? I placed a call to my mother telling her I am okay and she should extend my greetings to my father. I called Daniel, told him not to pick my ex-girlfriend calls. We chatted a little and i hung up. Back to the matters at hand, someone not very well disposed towards my welfare was trying to do me in, and he was employing the politest and nicest of procedures to eliminate me. I had to be on my guard. The butler told me it would be a minute before Madam -whoever she was- came down. It took fourty five minutes. By then, I was a nervous wreck. When she came in, I had no doubt that she was the Madam of the house. A very old lady of about seventy and above, but with such a massive personality and authoritative way of carrying herself. Nobody needed to be told that this woman wielded authority. I was at once on my feet but she imperiously waved me to sit down on my chair. I meekly obliged while she took a high chair directly opposite me. For two minutes, she didn't speak. Was she deaf?. She just sat there watching me. I could not stand the tension any longer so i spoke up. "Madam, I came here because I understand you needed a teacher to teach your................." "I know why you are here." she answered in a heavy voice that compounded her authoritative nature. She spoke again. "I know the reason you were given before you came here, and I have to tell that was an ostensible reason. The real reason why i wanted you here was to ask you why you are interested in this my house and the people within!" **************************** Good morning famz. CHAPTER SIX Did luck ran this way or was i being lured into some kind of danger? Had someone known of how curious i was of the goings on in that house and was trying to eliminate me so that i would not set a train of curious people who would want to know about the house on the hill top?. Or was it true that the occupier of the place actually needed a teacher for his or her child or ward and thought since i was close enough, i could occupy that position? But, from the story i heard. Only a woman was living in the magnificient building up there. Well, the woman must have a child. She probably can't live alone their. All what i have been hearing about the buildings must be plain fallacy or so i thought. Whatever it was, i could not get all the answer by standing there, so i excused myself for a minute and went in search for my friend John Agabus. I met him outside meting out punishments to latecomers. I called him aside and quickly narrated all what happened to him. I also gave him my parents address and everything about me to contact them in case i was not heard of again. I then went in to joined the policeman and the driver in the air conditioned Toyota Landcruiser to the mansion on top of the hill. Inside the car i laughed silently in my head. This was the house i had risked snake bites through the dangerous paths to get to. And now unexpectedly, i was having the smoothest of drives to the place. How strange the ways of the world were! When we got there, the massive gates were opened for the car as if they were being remotely controlled. Our car entered into the most spacious compound i have ever set my eyes on. The walls were high, different canopies were pitched outside in case one need to relax outside. I also sighted a swimming pool towards the rear end of the house. The policeman went and rang a bell on the heavy metal doors of the house. A man in a butler's clothes appeared. When he saw us he ushered me in as if he was expecting me. The policeman having done his job, turned back, to his post in the house maybe, and i was ushered again into a mighty opulent house i had never before been in. I walked on very soft carpets to a mighty hall where i was asked to sit down. I looked in surprise at the mighty hall with it big TV's, esoteric sound systems, split air conditioners, and what have you. A large portrait of a woman was hung on the wall. In short it was not a house to be found in Ilogbo town at all. It was at this point that i believed the story my teacher friend had told me about the building having been put up by the government as an intended presidential retreat. When the butler asked me to sit down, i could swear he was giggling, and although his face remained blank, i knew why i thought he was giggling. I felt totally out of place there. "Madam will be with you in a minute." He said, take a curtsy bow and went out. |
Like i said earlier. I noticed your attention. muhamadnur:@bolded. What a boring way to criticise? If you want to criticise do so by pointing out my flaws. And not by "poor updates and go and learn ish." |

***CONTINUATION*** I would never bother myself about the mysterious inhabitants of the hill top mansion again, i told myself. I had even learnt my lesson. Moreover,John had been right. After a short time of not having your curiosity about the hill people satisfied, you tended to forget about them. I had decided to forget about the people on the hill top of Ilogbo town, but i was never to know that, what i had set in motion by my rash action to go on foot to the house on the hill top would trail me. I was in school a week later when i had a strange visitor. A four wheeler Toyota Landcruiser with a small flag of NIgeria on a pole on the bonnet, came to the school. It had the Nigerian Police Force plate number. In the front seat was a police man and the driver. I wonder how the Landcruiser got here, with no pliable road. Probably, they must have brought it in by air. Or so i thought. Almost shaking in his pants the headmaster invited the visitors to the office. I would never blame him as the story of the man who was beaten by the police still lingered on. Apparently he thought they were high government education officials. I never suspected that it had anything to do with me. But in a short time, the school's prefect came to call me that i was wanted in the principal's office. When i entered, the principal spoke first. "These gentlemen have a letter for you, Mr Richard." "I, sir?" My surprise showed. "I don't know them." i was afraid it was a trick to kidnap me or something. The policeman who had brought the letter spoke. And his voice contained a note of deference not that of command. "Sir, this letter is for you. It is from the Ministry of Education." "Wha- What have i done?" I stammered. "Nothing wrong, i suspect, sir," said the policeman more politely. "If i were you I would read it first." I took the letter, it was addressed to me and on top of the envelope a Federal Republic Of Nigeria logo was embossed on it and also the coat of arms of Nigeria. My curiosity was activated again, as it grew at this strange message. I tore the envelope and read it. Dear Mr Richard, A very important person who lives where you teach has asked us to give him a qualified graduate teacher to teach her grandchild privately at her residence at Ilogbo town. Since you are the most qualified of the teachers there, having had your education at the country's University, i recommended you. If you will go with the messengers of this note, they would take you to see the lady, and discussions on remuneration would be made. I suggest you take advantage of this offer, since it could open the doors of opportunity for you. The Secretary to the Minister Ministry of Education. After reading the letter, i turned to the policeman-messenger: "Who is this person who wants to engage my services?" "I don't know of the contents of the letter, sir", the policeman replied, "but i am to take you to the residence on top of the hill." And he pointed to the house which had aroused my curiosity from the first day i arrived at Ilogbo town. |
