KANO—It was a tragic end for a 78-year-old man,
identified by police as Hassan Chiroma, when he slit his
own throat at the city abattoir, Kano, yesterday.
The incident which sent shock waves across city dwellers,
had set tongues wagging over what could have led the
septuagenarian to take his life.
Eyewitness said the man was earlier sighted at blacksmith
section of the market around midday where he allegedly
purchased a knife which he used to commit suicide.
The eyewitness said: “We mistook him as one of the
numerous butchers plying their trade, but we were
shocked soon as he turned the same knife against
himself.”
The witness, who preferred anonymity, stated that the
desperate cry of a man in danger triggered pandemonium
among traders who didn’t have the courage to watch the
horror.
But the police authorities which suspected foul play over
the development, has taken into custody four persons in
connection with the tragic incident.
The police spokesman in Kano, ASP Magaji Musa Majia,
told Vanguard on phone: “We rushed to the scene and
met the septuagenarian in his pool of blood, rushed him
to the nearest medical facility where he gave up the ghost.
“We are working on two leads and the likely outcome of
our investigation would certainly reveal whether it is
suicide or otherwise.”
The police spokesman said the command had requested
the hospital authorities to carry out autopsy to ascertain
factors that led to his death, adding that the corpse would
only be released for burial after investigation was
completed.
The police scribe, however, pledged to keep the general
public abreast of developments has they unfolded. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/78-year-old-man-commits-suicide-in-kano/ |

The Presidency has reacted swiftly to the allegation made by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. On the allegation of witch- hunting its members, the President’s Adviser on Media, Mr Femi Adesina, said that ordinarily he would not want to comment on such because they were comments coming from a political party and response are better from the APC leadership. He, however, said that concerning the President, it was untrue for Mr Olisa Metuh to claim that the President’s anti- corruption war was one-sided. According to him, “Mr Olisa Metuh is sounding like a broken record. It’s the same thing that he says all the time. But let me assure Nigerians that the President has always maintained that even when it affects APC members, the person concerned must go and defend himself.” The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Olisa Metuh, had said at a news conference in Abuja, that unfolding events have confirmed the party’s position that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is only using the anti-corruption posture as a tool to witch-hunt PDP members and perceived political opponents of the APC government. He stated that no member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite the public petitions of corruption and squandering of state funds, has been invited, questioned or arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). But Mr Adesina wondered why the issue was not whether the people facing the EFCC actually committed the crime but Mr Metuh is saying that it is one-sided. “I think what is of interest to Nigerians is ‘did this people commit the crime?’ not whether it is one-sided,” he said. www.channelstv.com/2015/10/18/one-sided-anti-corruption-war-presidency-dismisses-metuhs-allegations/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

The group championing the secession of Biafra from Nigeria,
Indigenous People of Biafra Worldwide, which owns Radio
Biafra on Sunday, wrote an open letter to world leaders over
the plight of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested
yesterday by the Directorate of State Service, DSS.
In the letter written by one Ifeanyi Chijioke on behalf of the
group, the members said that with the arrest of Kanu,
freedom of speech had received a knock of death.
The letter reads: “The world leaders must stand up to its
integrity, pride, and in defense of the law they made,” the
group said adding that the UN chatter on the rights of
indigenous people had become endangered with the arrest
of this “leader of indigenous people of Biafra.
“It’s in record that Nnamdi kanu is a law abiding leader who
has disciplined indigenous people of Biafra to strictly abide
by local and international law.
“The gut for his arrest is nothing but slap on the face of
United Nations.
“Meanwhile, this is a gross provocation of indigenous people
of Biafra and, as endangered people, would only wait
shortly for due process and immediate release of her
leader.
“The world should know that arrest of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is
the making of monster in indigenous people of Biafra and to
prevent and save lives must world leaders stand up to their
responsibility.
“Biafrans, as endangered species of terror, genocide,
murder and unlawful detentions, must be sorted or laws will
be taken into their hands.
“Biafrans call on world leaders to prevail on Buhari to with
immediate effect release the leader of the people as he is
charged with no crime.
