You are right though but there are other personal issues apart from financial status that most people won't like those they deemed 'not close enough' to know.
Actually being honest will earn you trust, but being honest and being open are two different thing. You can be honest without being open.
The bottomline is that both partners need to give each other chance (for understanding) at the early stage of the relationship.

I think you shouldn't tell a 'stranger' much about you. In as much as I will advise you not to lie (lies destroy relationship) it is advisable to change some conversation when you think you are given out more than you should at that particular level.

You must be comfortable whenever you are saying the truth or else don't say it.
