We scored 38 goals less than City and conceded just 1 goal more. We were 5th in goal scoring and 2nd in goals conceded, but somehow our defence is the problem.

The topic is not even worth discussing. I have said it before that is pure idiocy to attribute our woes on the defense.

The whole of last season, we were labouring to piece attacks together and Mourinho has not fixed that yet judging from the pre-season games and yet, defense is the problem.

Actually this is wrong. It is just something that has been repeated so much without verification that people now just recite it as truth.

The fact is more often than not the team that has scored the most goals wins the league. You can check back over the last 10yrs, 20yrs or even from the start of the EPL. Attack has led to more champions than defence.

I didn't even want to get involved in that argument because I have realised some people here can actually come up with pure falsehood just to defend Mourinho.

In Championship Manager you can just press a button, in football you need time to work and players on the pitch to work, which we didn't have until now. During pre-season it looked as though I was saying something out of order or crazy. Pre-season is difficult when you don't have your players.

Man city and Spurs were greatly affected too but watch them play this weekend and enjoy their football.

If we have someone like Bravo instead of DDG last season we could have finished 6th or 7th. We are porous at the back. You really want to play high line with our CBs? No matter how good a manager you are, you can’t turn average joes into world beater. Why didn’t Pep stick with Mangala, Sagna, Kolarov, Zabaleta last season? Why did Pep had to buy Laporte when Stones started getting injured last season?

Yes we play drab football sometimes but that doesn’t excuse the joke or CBs that we have. You made mention of Evra and Vidic, the difference is that while Evra and Vidic pick up after some time, Smalling, Jones, Darmain, Rojo have been with us for couple of years and they keep serving us shit every year, there’s no magic wand anywhere that will turn our average defenders into above average ones.

Zabaleta, Kolarov and Sagna were past their best before they left.
smailing and Jones at a time under SAF were regarded as the future of our defense. and hey, Evra and Vidic were just average players when they joined just like Shaw and lindelof.
So let your special one develop those potentials and stop looking for mercenaries.

I remember when we bought Evra and Vidic, we nearly killed them both after their first couple of matches. Did SAF let them rot on the bench and signed world class defenders? Hell no!
SAF improved those 2 players and turned them into world class players.
Those 2 I mentioned reminds me of Shaw and Lindelof. Mourinho has proved right the theory that he only works with mercenaries and can never develop players.
We are blaming the board? Was it not the same Mourinho that convinced the board to shell out £30m on Lindelof making them believe that would solve his problem. What has the scam done with Lindelof? Nothing!
Rather he wants a blank cheque to keep on wasting the club's finances on fantasies.

I disagree that it's unfair to PARTIALLY blame a board that was too FOOLISH to give Mourinho a new contract despite the fact that he's serving us useless negative football. It's not unfair to PARTIALLY blame a dumb board that collected Mourinho's targets list and didn't tell Mourinho ab initio that they won't "continue throwing money away without any ROI." They'd have spelt it out to Mourinho that he won't be getting the kinda support he was getting in the past two seasons. 1. Managers don't always get all the players they ask for.
2. The board has backed Mourinho adequately since he became UTD's manager.
3. The difference between what both Manchester clubs have spent under their current managers is not significant.

@emboldened, go through my post again, I wrote "SOME of his transfer targets" not "ALL". Mourinho or anybody is not stupid enough to request for all his targets to be acquired. He has said it sometime back in the past. Last summer, we went from Griezmann to Morata to Ukaku. We went from Dier to Matic. There are always other options for his targets.

Since he became our manager, the board has always tried to get 'some' of the players requested. It is always like that for all clubs. All managers have at least 3 players on their wishlist for same role just incase. It is not peculiar to Mourinho and that should never be an excuse for failure. Liverpool wanted Fekir and got Shaqiri. Have you seen Kloop crying about?.

It would be totally unfair to blame the board for his failure as he has been backed adequately. The only window I feel he was let down a bit would be this current window.
But then, who would blame the board? The man seems to be losing the plot and no sane board will continue throwing money away without any ROI.

I am sure he will get plenty games at Chelsea. I see this as a good deal for both Chelsea and Kovacic. Chelsea can assess him for a year before deciding on making the deal permanent.

I think I disagree with some of your points. I am not sure signing all his requested players was part of the contract extension offer.
The club has books to balance and can't keep shelling out money to fulfill Mourinho's fantasy. The difference between what both Manchester clubs have spent on players under both current managers is not quite significant.
I am sure the club believes we signed one of the best managers in the world and the best managers do not really need 'mercenaries' to perform.
We can as well sign Tony Pulls and get him all the world class players available and I am sure he will win trophies.
The club has backed Mourinho enough and this is time for him to show ROI. simple.
