Career › Re: 11 Things Nurses Don't Like Hearing by slyrone(m): 8:29am On May 19, 2016 |
nairalanddotorg: Nurses are often commended for having ‘the patience of a saint’, for our bottomless supply of kindness and willingness to work all the hours under the sun… of course, it’s never quite as simple as it seems.
Nurses are human too, and just like everyone else, little things we hear every day can get under our skin. When we hear them a few too many times, it starts to itch… So, just what should you never say to a nurse?
1. ‘So why didn’t you become a doctor?’
Never say this to us. Never. Whether you’re trying to imply that we’re smart enough to make it through medical school, or the opposite… it doesn’t matter. Nursing and medicine are two completely different jobs and trust us, we wouldn’t be nurses if we didn’t want to be. We’re definitely not in it for the money, anyway – not when the Government is giving us a 1 per cent pay rise and keeping 10 times as much as that for themselves…
2. ‘Nurses just help the doctors out, right?’
No, not quite. Doctors make decisions based on the information we give them because we’re around our patients the whole time, monitoring them, talking to them, observing them, whereas doctors nearly always have somewhere else to be and something else to do. It isn’t that we help the doctors, it’s that we make it possible for the doctors to do their jobs at all. When something goes wrong… who do you think is going to be next to you first?
3. ‘What’s happening to…?’
Think about it for a moment. Would you want us to go telling your neighbour all about your medical care? I doubt it. Please don’t ask us: we can’t possibly explain, and having to tell you that is slightly embarrassing… if not for you, then definitely for us.
4. ‘Can you score me…?’
Just because you’ve seen Gregory House mainlining vicodin like it’s water, and Nurse Jackie slipping oxycodone into her scrubs pockets… doesn’t mean that’s what healthcare professionals can actually get away with. Not to mention the fact that it’s more than just a little bit illegal. (Yes, we watch those shows too. Apparently, we just can’t get enough of it…)
5. ‘Anyone can be a nurse.’
Yep, anyone can make it through a numeracy exam and a formal interview before even being offered a place at university. And anyone can to get through three years of university education, spending 50 per cent of their course doing the job of a nurse, while collecting a bursary that might barely add up to a third of a qualified nurse’s salary. 16 things only student nurses will understand And anyone can do that while also writing essays and revising for exams, before getting character references to prove they are in fact a good enough person to enter this workforce that’s being cut left, right and centre despite the opposite being needed.
6. ‘I mean, all you do is empty urine bags and bring dinner, right?’
Well, no – there’s also the handling of controlled drugs, measuring what your vital organs are up to, looking out for things going wrong. And if they do, knowing what to do about it if there’s no doctor around. Someone will be watching over you 24/7, making notes, ensuring that everything is documented so that no matter who’s in charge of the next shift, everybody knows how well you’ve been, how well they should expect you to be, and how quickly to react if something seems to be changing. If there was one right thing said on Nurse Jackie, it was this: ‘Doctors diagnose. Nurses save lives.’ Sure, the doctors do a lot of hard work. But they make their decisions based on what we tell them.
7. ‘What’s taking so long?!’
Any number of things: the other patients that you’re here on the ward with. A phonecall from a concerned family member. A visitor asking if they can take their relative off the ward for some fresh air and a coffee. Making notes about your care. Concentrating on making sure I don’t give someone the wrong kind of drug or the wrong amount. Again, our job is far more complicated than it probably looks!
8. ‘Hellooooo, nurse!’
Yes, yes, the sexy nurse trope. We know. But really? Our uniform looks like pyjamas, and we’ve just been cleaning your urinary catheter. Even if it wasn’t gross professional misconduct to have a fling with a patient who thinks we’re hot… we probably don’t feel terribly attractive in scrubs, and it’s very unlikely we’ve got a thing for someone who we’ve seen in that situation…
9. ‘Do you only date doctors?’
Whilst I’m sure it’s true that some nurses get into relationships with co- workers, those nurses who do feel they’ve got the time and energy for a relationship almost certainly don’t want to be going home to someone they see at work… Who wants to hear about medicine over breakfast, lunch AND dinner?
10. ‘Why don’t you just smile?’
We work long hours, we listen to the things on this list every day, constantly feeling like our profession isn’t respected at all, and it’s been days since we properly sat down with our families. We’re overworked and short-staffed, and sometimes, we just want to sit down and cry. But we keep on keeping on…
11. And lastly… ‘I’m just a nurse…’
Yeah, that’s right. This one goes out to all the other nurses out there. If there’s one thing I hate hearing more than anything else, it’s nurses putting themselves down. Exhausted nurse sums up what many NHS workers think of Jeremy Hunt We slog all hours of the day, we do the seven-day-service that the government is trying to ‘introduce’, we work hard for our patients and their families and carers, and we work weird shift patterns that interfere with our social lives. It’s very possible that, in order to ensure other people have the best lives they can, we miss our own kids growing up. We are never ‘just a nurse’. We are amazing!

holmez: Nonsense school! if i hadn't schooled in the school, i wouldn't have known how substandard the school is. The Academy is just overrated. lack of basic facilities and poor hostel conditions(jam packed cabins) coupled with substandard lecturers and lack of basic teaching aids and technology(no training vessel). A maritime school where you are not even taught how to swim(except you register and pay for STCW courses). You are subjected to harsh military training and left with little or no time for your books. i wouldnt wish my enemy to study there. In conclusion, at OP, i don't think you made a mistake studying there, you were obviously just misinformed about the credibility of the institution I rep oceanography, we may not know drills like you guyz. but academically we d best |
Education › Re: Did I Do Wrong To Study In Maritime Academy Of Nigeria?? by slyrone(m): 11:08pm On May 17, 2016 |
Emexix: The maritime academy of Nigeria oron is the only federal marine school is Nigeria.
The school which boasts of 4300+ trained Nigerian merchant Navy officers and over 65,000 other workers in the maritime industry since 1983 to 2015 and at this point is still below par in its academic excellence.
I enrolled for a short course which ran all through 2015, it was a 10months course of 2 semesters which I completed November last year.
Fast forward to may 2016, No result, No certificate to forge ahead in my career.
Like everyother professional career which requires both theoretical and practical experience to excel, the marine industry both deck and engine requires more practical experience. But for my 2 semesters in the school, the lecturers could only teach u on the white marker board since the school lack basic equipments to take u practicals. Well since I already work onboard ships, I have knowledge of the practicals so I wasn't really bothered but how about those who haven't?
Having completed the course, paid in full and having no issue whatsoever, not even the first semester result have been released, we where only 30 candidates for the session so I see no reason why they should withhold it. We contacted the H. O. D who confirmed that the results are ready but the school have to setup a board meeting to deliberate on it before it could be released, (this was since mid February). Now the pain here is, the new session for 2016 will be starting first semester exams Monday may 23rd, without the results of the previous session released. Having made the calculations, if they should go ahead to write the exams, and they eventually release the result, anyone having any issue like carry over will have to wait till 2017 to rewrite it and then wait again to same time 2018 to get your certificate. This is like running a programme of 1 year for 4 years due to negligence on the part of the scrappy institution.
A colleague who ran the same short course in a private institution same time last year and paid far less to what I paid to a federal institution as tuition already got his certificate and he will be rounding up his officers course by June this year while am still here with year half spent still waiting for a result which is probably sitting on the desk of someone covered in dust.
Fynestboi, Richiez, olawalebabs lalasticlala.. Mods help. oga let me correct an impression MAN oron is not the only federal maritime institution in Nigeria. I went to fcfmt oceanography, I m 5months into my cadetship I studied nautical science and I can boldly tell you I ve my certificate with me. I guess you enrolled for coxuaine, or some sort those who enroll for such short courses never have carry over I ve friends at oron who ve their certificate with em 3 months after graduation. this is surprising. I ve never heard such a negative or derogatory comment abt man oron. so I ll advice you to run some checks. I greet every ahoy |
