It's like Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi will tussle for the ADC presidential flagbearer if Atiku decides to let it go this time around. Amaechi is now fully in ADC as a member after resigning from APC but Obi still has one leg in LP as he doesn't seem to be sure of his fate in the coalition.

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has vowed to serve for only one term in office if he gets the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amaechi stated this while making an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday.

When asked if he would consider the balance of power if given the ticket, the ex-governor of Rivers insisted it was an unwritten rule in Nigerian politics.

He replied: “Of course. For now, the way Nigeria is, you must keep to that unwritten agreement that says North eight years and South eight years.

“I led the fight against the PDP government. Why? Because there was an agreement that the government at the time would serve four years.

“And after four years, that government reneged. And I said no, that would be unfair.

“That will be instability at its peak because the North will react. So the best thing to do, is to support the Northern candidate to continue the balance of power.

“This time around, the South must be allowed to complete their tenure.”

A chieftain of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and a key member of the opposition coalition, Nasir El-Rufai, has said a new political party would be registered as a back-up for the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

El-Rufai said the new party would be registered as an alternative option to counter potential infiltration by the All Progressives Congress, APC, into the ADC.

The opposition coalition adopted the ADC as its platform on Wednesday.

However, El-Rufai said there is a tendency that the APC might instigate crisis within the ADC by inciting old members against the new leadership.

He disclosed this in an interview with Radio France International (RFI) Hausa Service on Wednesday night.

“Those who refuse to join the APC face threats of investigations by agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), or Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

“The opposition parties’ alliance in the ADC is temporary, and we may register a new party as a second option, which we will move to should the ADC be instigated into crisis by the government,” the former Kaduna governor said.

ABUJA- THE 2023 Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has taken a swipe at Coalition leaders who took over control of the party as the platform to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027, challenging the promoters to be courageous enough to announce that the party will field a Southern presidential candidate in the next election.

Addressing Journalists on Thursday in Abuja, Dumebi Kachikwu who described the opposition figures, led by former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and taking over the ADC, as ‘enemies of Nigeria., said that from the beginning, the coalition was tailored towards producing Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the party in 2027, just as he said that Nigerians are all victims of unjust system.

He said, “These people are being sponsored against us Nigerians, they are all friends, they attend the same meetings, weddings, parties, they are all old friends. We are all victims of an unjust system. Atiku and Tinubu are not my problem, their generation is my problem.”

Amidst the present political crisis rocking the party, Kachikwu has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to inform Nigerians who the current National Chairman of the ADC.

According to the ex-presidential candidate, said that the opposition politicians — some of whom have held political offices in the past — are not going to take the country forward, stressing that Nigerian youths, who form the largest demographic, are not part of the coalition, adding, “the same people who put our country on its knees are the same people who claim they are fire brigade and they want to put out fire. And you think these people are out to rescue Nigeria? They are political jobbers.”

Kachikwu said, “There are also those who believe that by way of force, people can come in and take over the party. I just want to say before I start taking questions from journalists here present, I am not one who is easily cowed. For those who have been threatening me since yesterday, for those who on social media believe that I can be bullied, for people like People Gazette who have sent messages threatening that they are publishing a story about tax evasion, the same story they published 2 or 3 years ago in America, I will say to them very clearly now that at least I will assess taxes that they are claiming $2.7 million in America.

“The people that they are promoting, they should show you where they pay taxes, the business they do and their means of livelihood. To those who continue to believe that politics in Nigeria should continue by way of bullying, threats and aggressive forms of behavior, I want to tell you that we need to move away from this style and this brand of politics in Nigeria. You cannot continue to cow people on social media.

“You are the vocal minority and the silent majority will continue to have their way in Nigeria. You cannot bully people into going your way. As a party, I have here William, who is chairman of Benue State, Musa, the state chairman of Niger State, William from Nasarawa State here, I have Mohamed, who is also the national PRO of Etibok, chairman of Akwa Ibom, Mohamed Bono, and Zaradine Jigawa.

“These people you see here are people they call ordinary Nigerians, common men, who are the people who have been the guardians, custodians of this party. They are the people you saw yesterday when Mosu said that all their offices have been dissolved so that these new people can take over the party. Just imagine the situation.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023 election, Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and ex-Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, had on Wednesday taken over control of African Democratic Party, ADC, as the platform to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

By law, you cannot operate from, or belong to, two or multiple political parties, so it is safe to say that their open declaration for ADC today is a clear abandonment of their previous parties. In fact, belonging to two political parties is a ground for disqualification in an election.

Therefore, the emergence of ADC as presently constituted marks the formal dismemberment of the PDP, hitherto Nigeria’s strongest opposition Party. Majority of the old guard in the PDP (who have apparently lost control of the Party) have been pushed out of the party by the Younger Turks within the PDP. That is why the gathering today was a conglomerate of ‘former this’ and ‘former that’ of the PDP. No matter how you look at it, this is just Atiku’s faction of PDP in desperate search for the 2027 Presidential ticket - nothing more, nothing less.

The other addition to the so-called ‘coalition’ is a sprinkling of APC members who actually worked against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the last election and one or two APC leaders who lost their constituencies to opposition parties in 2023. Their movement therefore takes NOTHING away from the APC. It is actually better for the APC because it is just a case of totally extracting the germ that was eating the cola nut from within.

The person who the old, cunning guards want to take for a ride in all of this is Peter Obi. They want his votes, but don’t want to give him their Presidential ticket, because this is Atiku’s show simpliciter. That is why David Mark is the interim Chairman. Those who know politics know what I am saying. But if you do not give Peter Obi the Presidential ticket, you lose his supporters. It is as simple as that. And how can you make someone who won two regions in the last election (South-East and South-South) a running mate to the person who won only one region (North-East)?

Therefore, when the dust settles, you will discover that PDP and the Labour Party have lost something, the ADC have only gained something like a caricature, but the APC has lost ABSOLUTELY nothing.

What this all means is that since the 2023 elections, the APC have become stronger, whilst the opposition parties have been fragmented and have become weaker. Those who have defected to the APC since 2023 (the Governors, Senators, Honourable members, etc) put side-by-side with a small handful who have left the APC, who would you rather have in your ranks? That is where lies the key to the whole analyses.

For now, let us face governance and allow them exercise their constitutional right to associate and assemble.

Dear ADC family and fellow Nigerians,
It is with the greatest amusement that I watched the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar led group announce their takeover of the national leadership of the African Democratic Congress. As is expected I have been inundated with a lot of calls and messages seeking my reaction to the unfolding dramedy.

The facts of the matter are as follows:
The Atiku led group are in some form of alliance with the former leadership of the party led by Ralph Nwosu. The tenure of the Nwosu led executive lapsed on August 21, 2022, and his continued parade of himself as the chairman of the party was the subject of various litigations in different courts across the country.

From the foregoing, I want to then pose the following questions: Can you build something on nothing? Can you shave a man’s hair in his absence? Can you enter a man’s house through the back door and declare yourself the landlord? These yesterday’s men who represent a bad chapter in Nigeria’s past have bought bad market from a man who represents a bad chapter in ADC’s past.
Nigerians have watched in amazement as this group of mostly geriatrics shopped around for a party to prosecute their ‘chopping must continue’ ambition.

This further cements the opinion most hold that political parties in Nigeria stand for nothing and will fall for anything. They have told us that they are fighting for the rights of ordinary Nigerians and that they are on a rescue mission but what is confusing to the Nigerians they want to rescue is that these men made up of a former vice president, former governors, ministers and political office holders are the same people who have presided over the affairs of this nation for the past four decades.

We have nothing to show for their decades of leadership other than being seen as a nation divided by tribe and religion and thriving in mediocrity. We are a nation lacking in the basics whose majority are poor but here we are watching those who set our nation on fire saying they are the fire brigade.

No, you are not; you are a bunch of greedy and selfish old men who believe that political power is your birthright. You stand for nothing other than your interests and will pay any price to hold political office.
Nigerians are tired of your generation and reject everything you have to offer which is nothing. Nigerians yearn for new names, new faces, fresh ideas and progressive ideals.

We yearn for a new Nigeria that thrives on meritocracy and deemphasises tribe and religion. We dream of a nation that works for all Nigerians irrespective of region or religion. We want a nation whose laws and opportunities are equal to all men. We desire inclusiveness for all and social protections for the weak amongst us. Nigerians have never asked for much other than a leadership that truly cares. You have failed us and stand rejected by us.

If you seek to be a part of the ADC, do the proper thing and come through the front door. We are a party of decent and well-behaved people. Our brand of opposition is one that not only opposes but proposes, something that your group is not conversant with.

I strongly suspect that you will be shopping for another party very soon and as you do that, we the members of the African Democratic Congress wish you Bon Voyage. Thank you and God bless.
