Thank you for understanding where I'm coming from
.... Do you know how many people hate maths or fail maths.. It's not because they are so daft.... It's because they lost the interest when they were in primary school or in junior classes.. All because they can't understand the maths in English language.. Now imagine they were thought in their everyday language.. How simple it will be for them.. Don't tell me we cant translate maths into our local language.... Most of our teachers sef.. Don't think they know what they are teaching o.. They all cram from the book and download to the pupils.. Few of them can explain in simplest language

This is such a basic thing that I wonder how people fail to see it. For as long as education is delinked from the environment and culture of the people, it becomes ineffective

Our fathers before us grew up with vernacular, studied(english) in school and excelled. Education will be simplified when the society agrees to do so, not when the method of standard communication is lowered.

How many of our fathers went to school and excelled? Colonial education was meant for a few people who could work for white folks. Succesive African governments have adopted the same attitude. It was not meant to create inventors. It was not meant for the masses and the peasants. Education should be for the MAJORITY not the MINORITY.

If the pidgin language is underdeveloped, then use local languages of the nigerian people.

Then, there are a lot we have to let go. We have to let go of our foreign religions as well. In short, we need to revert to traditions. I do not believe that English alone underdeveloped us. What about our attitudes too? What about pervasive corruption and personal greed? When we talk about African underdevelopment, foreign language is just only one factor. China began to progress, not ordinarily because they speak Chinese but because they got their acts right. They voted zero tolerance for corruption and invested heavily in technology. You shouldn't also forget that they kept their indigenous religions as well. Have you kept the religion of your forefathers?

Why should we Kick out foreign religions? You seem not to be getting the point. The point is this: TEACH A CHILD IN A LANGUAGE THAT HE UNDERSTANDS. There are millions of Nigeria children who just feel education is a pain because they are being taught very useless things in English. Things that they would really grasp fast if it were taught in Yoruba or Igbo or Hausa. Download the Book "Decolonizing The Mind" By Ngugi Wa Thiongo and Moving The Center By The Same Author.

All over British Africa, there are two evil legacies of Colonial education :

1. The worship of boarding schools
2. The use of English as a medium of Instruction.

Tanzania uses Swahili from Grade 1 - 7. They were however afraid to use it beyond that because Kenya didn't follow suit. They felt that they would be alone. If Kenya - which has a national language - Swahili were to use it for Education, Tanzania will follow suit.

Finnish and Swedish are the official languages.

Also, you must understand that Nigeria is different from Finland. Nigeria is a multi ethnic state. Which of the indigenous languages would you pick?

If you pick Hausa language, the rest would shout Sharia or islamization.

If you pick Yoruba language, Igbos and Hausas would kick.

If you pick Igbo language, Hausas and Yorubas would be uncomfortable.

It just can't work in Nigeria without it generating into tribal conflicts. Nigeria's political and ethnic setup is far different from that of Finland.

Why would you teach in Hausa in Igboland? Why would you teach in Igbo in Yorubaland? Use Hausa to teach Hausas, Use Igbo to Teach Igbo. If an Igbo man thinks that he can go to interior Hausaland to make money, then He MUST learn hausa or choose to Homeschool. Individuals can set up private schools to present English medium content. Bigger public schools in Urban areas can go with Bilingualism.

All I'm saying is this all subject can be simplified and explained better in our local language if it can be explain in Chinese and Spanish etc.. Our education system needs to be reformed.. We cant go further as a continent if we refuse to develop with local languages..if you understand something you should be able to explain in your local language

You are talking to people who can't grasp a very basic concept. Iceland has a population of 350,000 people - that's less than the number of teachers in Nigeria. They use Icelandic from pre-primary to university level. The people are just giving excuses because they think that Education must be in English.

Yes. Its called schools in the catchment area. Those who don't want, can go to private schools which will teach in English. A few schools schools should pursue Bilingualism. What is going now in Kenya and Nigeria (I'm Kenyan) is one of the reasons for underdevelopment.

Excuses excuse Excuses. Finalnd has got only 5.4% of its population as Swedes and yet Swedish is used as a medium of instruction up to University level. Why can't you start by adding another language to english? Start with elementary school, then secondary school then state universities and polytechnics

Witchcraft is real.

At least that is what two suspected car thieves found out in Mombasa after they were caught by suspected evil powers.

The two allegedly stole a Nissan Fuga and were driving it towards Bamburi Mtambo from Bamburi Mwisho.

They would later mysteriously stop the car, park it outside a clinic, got out, undressed and started bathing in a nearby pool of muddy water.

"They were saying it was so hot and they needed a bath," said an eyewitness.

A snake was allegedly following them.

The two suspected car thieves, however, picked up the snake and started speaking to it.

They danced with it as if they were having a conversation, according to residents.

They took turns carrying the snake around their neck.

Some said they recognized the car, which they said belonged to a man living near Anwarali, in Kisauni constituency.

Some eyewitnesses said the two will only be "released" after the car owner arrives at the scene.

Hundreds of curious onlookers milled around them.

Police, who arrived later, had a hard time controlling the crowd.

The incident caused a massive traffic snarl-up as onlookers tried to get a glimpse of the two.

Occasionally, the two caused near stampedes as they threatened to throw the snake into the crowd.

All the while, the live snake never left their hands.

Incidences of people using witchcraft to capture thieves are common in Mombasa and other parts of the country.

In January, a suspected thief was found lying outside a house from where he had stolen a goat in Majaoni area of Kisauni constituency.

The suspected thief had tied the goat with a rope and used it as a pillow.

He was stark naked

The ruling by the courts was pathetic. It based it's argument on the transmission of results. As you know, not every part of the Nation has proper network. Since some text results didn't come to the portal with images of the forms, thats where the problem was. But even more disgusting is that these are not the results taht were used to declare the president. The results used were tallied manually. We are still waiting the judgement to be written.

This time, Uhuru will win with 65% + 1. This is a very pathetic ruling

Crime / How Kenyan Police Caught Bird That Flew All The Way From Russia by SmallSimba: 3:47pm On Aug 04, 2017

Titus Imboma an Ornithologist and Research scientist at National Museum of Kenya

For the past two years, Corporal Gladys Gathogo has taken keen interest in birds. This was never the case before, but her experience with a strange bird believed to have come from Russia changed all this. At around 6pm on January 22, 2015, a Steppe Eagle landed right at the gate of Makongeni Police Station, along Jogoo Road.

One of the two people passing nearby picked the bird and handed it over to Corporal Gladys Gathogo, who was on duty at the station. Gathogo says the bird was totally exhausted and was picked with ease. It did not attempt to fly, as it would under normal circumstances. The bird, however, occurred strange to the officer: “It had a metal ring on its leg and white tags on both wings, which made me suspect it was under some kind of research. I resolved to call and inform Kenya Wildlife Service about it.”

As she notified KWS, Gathogo locked the Steppe Eagle in one of the rooms. At 7.30pm, Peter Mutoro, a ranger from Problem Animal Control (PAC) department, arrived at the station and picked the bird. Mutoro says KWS headquarters called and instructed him to go pick the bird. “I visited the police station and picked the bird,” he confirms. Corporal Gathogo booked the incident in the Occurrence Book (OB).

He adds many people would easily have left the bird to die or wait for its own fate. Foreign birds An ornithologist and research scientist NMK with the Zoology department, Titus Imboma, received the Steppe Eagle. Imboma says the Steppe Eagle, whose origin is Russia, must have got tired after travelling long distance and landed at the station. “Luckily, it was saved by the officer, courtesy of the ring and white tags,” he said. Gladys didn’t believe the bird came all the way from Russia. “I have always thought all birds belonged to this country. It has never occurred to me there are foreign birds that come and go.”

The information on the bird’s ring read, ‘AA 22 17 MOSKVA’ and was ringed in Russia. Imboma explains they later sent the ring number, species of the bird and its location to bird rangers in Russia. Russia confirms He reveals: “The Russians responded the Steppe eagle was tagged on July 5, 2014 in the Volgograd region (Russia): N 49.62 E 46.47, by a scientist called Valery Pimenov. The bird had travelled 5,719 km, in about three months.”

Crime / A Thief In Kenya Surrenders To Police After Juju Bees Chase Him From Stolen Car by SmallSimba: 9:38am On Jun 27, 2017

Francis Sikadigu who surrendered himself to police after being attacked by a swarm of bees in Bungoma, June 25, 2017. /JOHN NALIANYA

Police in Bungoma are holding a Ugandan national who surrendered himself to police that he had stolen a car.

The man rushed to the station after a swarm of bees attacked him as he attempted to get away with the vehicle.

Francis Sikadigu is said to have been attacked by the bees as he was driving the car which was suspected to have been stolen.

He caused a scene after rushing to Bungoma Police Station with the bees following in tow.

Sikadigu then rushed out of the police station and sought a traditional healer in a bid to be set free from the bees.

John Wafula, the vehicle's owner, said he was approached by the suspect who claimed he wanted five cars for hire on Friday.

He said they met at a hotel in town to discuss the terms for the car hire with Sikadigu who claimed he had a five-day contract.

Wafula claimed that Sikadigu had insisted that he wanted the Toyota Premio and Axio latest models for his clients.

"I gave him a quotation of Sh5,000 per car for each of the five days."

He said that when he came back to the negotiation table, he continued sipping his juice and noticed that he had started feeling dizzy.

Wafula said that he found himself in hospital on Saturday and then noticed that his car keys were missing.

"I approached a traditional doctor who assured me that my car will be found in three days," he said.

"The traditional medicine man assured me that the suspect will not leave Bungoma town and will be attacked by bees."

After he was set free from the bees, the man was arrested and taken to Bungoma police station for interrogation.

Bungoma South OCPD David Kirui said they are still investigating the matter.

MtuMsuper:
SmallSimba, am also a kenyan with quite sometime in Nairaland. I joined this forum mainly to listen to online debates and learn from other Africans. Among the things i know is that there is alot of ethnic violence in Nigeria. Just google "Southern Kaduna" or "Fulani herdsmen " on the nairaland search engine and you will be chastened by what we had to undergo in 2007 in comparison . The inter religious violence also has an ethnic twist to it, and a few weeks ago i asked my pastor who is my ex school mate to pray for the Christians of Nigeria. Along with countries like Sudan, Somalia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia that are extremely intolerant of Christianity, Nigeria is the only Muslim majority country(the Muslim % is slightly over 50), not in the Middle East where Christians are regularly butchered for their faith.

You should also know that there is a nascent movement located in the south east of the country who are agitating for a break up of Nigeria and they call themselves IPOB. They want to reactuate the still born republic of biafra that was the cause of the Nigerian civil war. That war was very destructive and indeed was the bloodiest conflict ever on African soil at any time in history. The wounds of that war may have somewhat subsided, but inevitably there are always embers in the fire place itching for a rematch, sadly. This separatism infact is not confined to that section of Nigeria. Indeed there exist several other secessionist or regionalist movements across all regions like the guys who gave that ultimatum. Large countries tend to be like that - did you know for instance there exist Texas nationalists who want to break away from USA? You do recall the movement by Quebecois to break away from English speaking Canada and create their own French speaking wonderland in the early 2000s? So Nigerians are always on a knife edge with such elements in their population, its ever tense. Sometimes the utterances by important leaders there to other tribes can make one shudder, something that would make you be charged with hate speech ASAP in Kenya. The likes of Moses Kuria for example would be bridesmaids by comparison in Nigeria . Last election a traditional Oba or King of Lagos ordered all igbos to vote for the incumbent party in power or else drown in the Lagos lagoon! Imagine that!

That being said, i pray for peace and prosperity for all afrikans everywhere. The major problem i think in Nigeria is lack of a leader who can forge a bond between her peoples so that nobody feels left out. A Mandela or George Washington type national leader is sorely lacking. From my vantage point, which i confess is not a solid one being electronic media and internet influenced and not practical, i see Buhari not being truly on top of the unifying game. Even Goodluck and Obasanjo had major headaches trying to satisfy the nations competing regional factions. In this regard, its very much like India. If you ever asked me which leader of a large nation i admire most, i would say Vladimir Putin without hesitation. Why? The man has forged a nation under a firm but fair grip. Russians love him like no business. Even his critics concede he is the best devil available to lead the nation. Russians don't like sissified leaders like Yeltsin who made Russia look weak. Putin's rise put an end to sissified leaders and restored the historical image of a tough but fair leader that made Russia great again.

I think Nigeria needs a Putin.

Thanks. Kenya too needs a Putin to really clean up the mess we are in. The difference between us and the Nigerians is that we tend to be very sensitive to violence sentiments unlike in 2007. Back then, we overrated our intelligence. Today, we know that there is no madness beyond us as a people. The Nigerians in my opinion, have overrated their tenacity. That's why i respect Goodluck. If he had won and declared the winner, there would have been violence still. I'm still amazed that there are southerners still living in the North. There was a civil war in Rwanda-Burundi; But it was the death of the presidents that triggered the massacre of the Tutsi. Southernors must know that if Buhari were to pass on, the consequences might be unintended. Different activities in the world set the perfect stage for the exploding of the North's anger.

I am a pan-africanist who loves to learn about other African countries. I've taken a look at your forum and have followed a bit of the "Igbos Must Leave The North Ultimatum". I do not have enough knowledge to comment about matters of Nigeria. I Don't know much about the "real tension" as opposed to the "Online tension" that is in Nigeria. But i'll let you out on some info...

In 2005, a group of missionaries came from 20 different countries for a one-month mission activity in Kenya. One of the guys was a Burundian. While we were watching the news, he saw how people were demonstrating and how much they were being clobbered as the were demonstrating about the constitution making process. When he saw that, he told me "This country is heading for bloodshed. Things are not good in this country."

When i heard him say that, i laughed. I told him that politics in Kenya is very hot, "But we are never stupid enough to kill each other because of politics. We are an intelligent group of people"

The violence of 2007 was TOTALLY UNEXPECTED. It was spontaneous, but it didn't happen by chance. It just happened when the circumstances are just right.

What does this have to do with Nigeria?

Same thing...

Many of you here are chatting online, but i believe very few of you actually understand that the stage for violence is closer than you can imagine. For the southerners living in the North, as much as you can, get out of that place. Forget about the Yoruba, Igbo whatever nonsense. Whereas there are a majority of people who feel that the ultimatums are heading nowhere, the truth is that you only think that way because you forget a very important scenario right now in Nigeria:

BUHARI IS SICK!!!.

What if he dies while you are still bickering? That would be a game changer. The Northerners will be mourning and they may even be angry. The so called "Moderate voices" in the north will change the minute a southerner celebrates the death of Buhari. If a group of ten southerners make a video celebrating the death of Buhari, trust me, that will be enough evidence to make the most "moderate" Northerner to explode. And even though he might not pick a machete and kill his neighbour, he'll just keep quiet and that's enough to let evil prevail.

The Timebomb is just waiting for a trigger, and the death of Buhari (if it happens) is a perfect excuse to slaughter the Southerners. I wish Nigeria the best

If you are Yoruba and you are thinking "This is an Igbo-Hausa" problem, you're very very ignorant. When i was in standard six, my favorite story was called "The Noisy Hornbill". I'm not sure whether there is a Nigerian Equivalent. I'd urge all Non-Igbos to read it. I can't get it online, but here is someone who has retold the story, though not as well:

In a large forest lived the hornbill, and other animals of course! Day in day out the hornbill would make its incessant noises which would be echoed all over the forest. The ladybird however was not indifferent to the hornbill's noise. So she summoned the snail, the mushroom, the hen and other plants and animals that lived in that great forest. To the ladybird's horror however, all the animals and plants dismissed her concerns! The mushroom claimed he did not mind the hornbill's noise since the hornbill had a constitutional right to make as much noise as she loved. The snail retorted that what the hornbill did was none of his business all he cared about was his children and what they would feed on. Everyone gave their excuses and at the end of the day all the ladybird could conclude was what the hen told her, "Everyone for himself, God for us all!!"
However one fateful morning as the hunter was passing by the forest, he was greatly attracted to venture into the forest following the hornbill's quacks, and in he went! Of course the first thing he did was shoot down the hornbill who fell on the mushroom!!! So he picked up the horn bill and the awesome looking mushrooms and ofcourse the snail was well tucked under the mushrooms, so he picked the snail too! When the hen saw what was happening he tried to sound an alarm to the rest of the forest but it was TOO LATE he was captured by the hunter
