Ecstasy154: The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has barred its members from participating in the 2019 general elections processes.
It also said the offer from the Federal Government in the efforts to meet its demands as contained in the 2017 Memorandum of Action (MoA) is still fluid and far from expectations.
It, however, allows members to voluntarily participate but without using any material that bears ASUU or insignia that relates to the union.
In a strike Bulletin 8 issued and signed by the union’s President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, a copy of which was obtained by the University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU, asked members to await further developments on the strike which are ‘rapidly unfolding.’
According to Ogunyemi, the proposal from government towards resolving the demands of ASUU as contained in the 2017 MoA is still fluid and far from expectations
The bulletin read: “Though some progress has been made with respect to discussion with Government agents (The Minister of Labour and Employment as well as Minister of Education), at the moment, the proposal from Government towards resolving the demand of ASUU as contained in 2017 MoA and Strike Bulletin 1 is still too fluid and far from expectations. Hence, it is the view of the NSCC that members should await further developments which are rapidly unfolding.
“In accordance with the ASUU’s long standing position, ASUU as a union will not participate in the conduct of 2019 general elections, although members may voluntarily participate in the conduct of the elections. However, members are prohibited from participating in the election processes using any material that bears ASUU or relates to the union”

Can you imagine this government that find it difficult to pay the lecturers so that the students will go back to classroom to make their future more better is the same government asking ASUU to release the students so that they can use them to run the election in order to help the politicians achieve their goals.
Are they even thinking of the things the students are losing or are they only thinking of what they will lose if ASUU did not release the students for their silly elections?
How I wish our students will unanimously reject working for the election until the strike is called off. After using them for the election, they will still not settle with the lecturers so that the students will go back to classroom.

Education › Re: The Illegality Of NANS And Why They Don't Speak For Nigerian Students by Sman37(m): 7:26am On Jan 04, 2019 |
chieyine: NANS as we all know means National Association of Nigerian Students and according to Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, A student is a person who is studying at a university or other place of higher education. As such, we expect NANS leadership to come from students currently studying but what we have are people who delay going for the compulsory National Youth Service to as much as 5years in order to occupy NANS leadership position and as such preventing current students from occupying such positions "According to NANS charter of demand, for undergraduates, you are a student until you go for your NYSC" but according to general meaning of students, their definition is as faulty as can be imagined. I was shocked when I heard NANS writing to the Federal Government to be part of the negotiation between The FG and ASUU and I had to scrutinize the leadership of NANS. It was shocking that all Major Exco in NANS are not students but one is tempted to ask
1. Why are all the excos of NANS not students still in school? 2. Since this people are not students, who gave non students the authority to speak for students? 3. Can a labourer negotiate wages for a banker? Why are they negotiating with the government? 4. I haven't read anywhere of NANS leadership meeting with ASUU to chart a way forward concerning the strike but they are more interested in meeting the FG. Is the purported meeting for students or for themselves 5. They claim to fight for students but the last time I heard about NANS standing on their feet and making their demands known was during the military regime. But this current crop, adorn their cars with NANS plate number. One is left perplexed trying to decipher the source of livelihood of graduated students who have neither gone for NYSC nor are working. I am a member of University of Nigeria Medical Students Association(UNMSA) and we have our National body called Nigeria Medical Students Association(NiMSA) and the members of these associations are strictly students who are still in school and does not include those who are looking for placement for their housemanship, you cannot go for NYSC without doing your housemanship.
Then why is that of NANS different?
I plead with President Buhari that this current crop of NANS do not represent The Nigerian Students and as such shouldn't be negotiated with or called to the Negotiation table. And if our cars should get spoilt and we take it to the mechanic workshop, we do not negotiate with the apprentice without the Express approval of the main mechanic. The FG should go back to the meeting table with ASUU and iron out their differences.
Chieyine Nelson 500 level Med/Surg University of Nigeria The problem is well identified but how can we dissolve it and make it students in school for students in school NANS! We must do something as a students and it should be done now as a patriotism of Nigerian students! |

kirajustice: @POLITICSNGR
The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has said that if elected president, he would appoint a minister of youth who will not be more than 30 years old.
PoliticsNGR learned that the PDP presidential flag-bearer made the pledge at a Town Hall meeting with youths in Lagos on Monday.
According to him, it is incumbent on the present crop of leaders in Nigeria to mentor the younger generation and the best way to achieve that objective is to appoint youth who are brilliant into top government positions and allow them to learn the ropes.
“I have pledged that 40 percent of my government will be youth. Let me assure you that it’s a promise and I won’t break it. My minister of youth is going to be less than 30 years.”
The former Vice President further remarked during the question and answer session at the event that if elected as president he would give top priority to education investment, saying that “President Buhari has confessed that the economy is in bad shape under his watch and it is clear that the President is short of ideas about how to fix the broken economy. There is no single economist in his administration and that is why we are in this mess. “I know how to fix a broken economy. I know how to create jobs and I also know how to empower the youth. That’s the reason I’m here today - to give hope to you the youth that together we can get Nigeria working again.”
Also speaking at the event, the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, extols the Nigeria youth for their resilience despite all chastisement and uncooperative attitude from the incumbent government.
“All you have to do is to vote for Atiku as president but be very assured that under the Atiku administration, every Nigerian will be accommodated and included.”
The Town Hall meeting attracted a large number of young people from all walks of live across the country, and it is in continuation of interactive session that Atiku has been having with different stakeholders since the commencement of political campaigns for the 2019 election.

Agriculture › Re: Farmers Want FG To Ban Maize Importation by Sman37(m): 6:27am On Nov 19, 2018 |
Adieza: Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) has called on the Federal Government to ban the importation of maize into the country to encourage local production. Alhaji Bello Abubakar, the National President of the association, made the call while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Sunday. Abubakar was reacting to a recent publication by the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) on a request by Grand Cereals Limited to import maize into the country. He said the move was `unpatriotic’ and targeted at thwarting the efforts of farmers and the government toward achieving self-sufficiency in maize production. According to him, farmers produce enough and better maize to feed the country than what is being imported. “Our last year’s production was 15 million tonnes and this year, we produced 20 million tonnes of maize and the required quantity for all maize processors in Nigeria is about eight million tonnes. “Government intervention in the agricultural sector has put in place the Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP) to encourage local production of agricultural commodities including maize. “MAAN is executing the ABP in 19 states which has empowered about 100,000 on and off farm employment. “This contribution of MAAN, if complemented by other large scale maize grain users, will create more than one million on and off farm employment in the maize value chain. “Therefore, we request that the importation of maize grain in any form is considered counter-productive to agricultural development in Nigeria and should be discouraged in its entirety,’’ he said. On armyworm devastation of maize farms, Abubakar said that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), had put in place measures to address the disease. “Members of MAAN were trained and pesticides, fertiliser, seeds were given to them by the Federal Government and FAO to manage the pest. “ This year, there is no infestation of armyworm like last year,’’ he said. He however, appealed to companies who involved in maize importation to provide their preferred maize seedlings to local farmers to grow, to encourage production of improved varieties. Mr Rufus Ebegba, the Director General of NBMA, said the agency had received a request by Grand Cereals Limited to import maize into the country. Ebegba, however, disclosed that the permit had not been granted for the maize import. “It is true but the permit has not been granted,’’ he said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MAAN was established to provide research on maize production, quality input to farmers, coordinate between farmers and the government. MAAN is made up of maize scientists and researchers, input suppliers, service providers, farmers, marketers, maize suppliers and processors. The association, which has its presence in the 36 states and FCT, has over 10 million registered farmers and members.

Education › Re: 7 Things Students Can Do During The ASUU Strike by Sman37(m): 3:03pm On Nov 15, 2018 |
mykwaba: Just at the time, we thought the era of students having to stay some extra years in school due to unnecessary strikes championed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was over, they strike again.
This is really a sad tale as this could cause major disruptions in the school calendar. But we are here to give you things students can do during the ASUU strike.
Unfortunately, it is easy for affected students to get into a lazy mode, where they sit around doing nothing or just whiling away valuable time that can never be gotten back.
Some students will eventually spend time on frivolities that have no positive impact on their lives all through the period of the strike.
But on the bright side of things, since you are here and you may be wondering how you could possibly make this “indefinite” time worth your while, we ask you to take the time to read through these things students can do during the ASUU strike that will help you benefit from your stay away from school.
Start a Business
As an undergraduate who is willing to become self-reliant, there is no better time to start a small business than now. The strike period is the perfect period to go out there, launch out that business idea you’ve been nursing. There is no age too young for becoming an entrepreneur and it’s easier to stert a business now than ever before due to the presence of technology that eases alot of things.
Use this period at home to start a small business. You could either sell products or render a service. The good thing is that you do not necessarily need a large capital to get yourself started. You can also use social media as a tool to leverage your business.
Most importantly, carry out a market research and survey in the type of business you are going into before you actually start. You could start a home cleaning service or food delivery service…there are so many options.
Managing a business gives you a lot of opportunities to gain a lot of experience such as people skills, teamwork, etc which will be beneficial when you eventually conclude your studies.
Learn a new skill
You finally have the time to learn a new skill. It could be photography, jewelry making, learning to play an instrument, baking, writing and producing music or playing a sport.
Take the time to learn it and get really good at it. Not only does it give you an edge and provide opportunities for a side hustle, it will help build your self-confidence and give you value for time invested.
In our world today, certifications would help you in diverse ways, but, having a skill that meets the demands of the world economy and the demands of people on daily basis would rather take you farther in your career.
The world is ruled by people who have armed themselves with skills that are useful in our world today. There are several skills that one could actually learn, depending on your interest.
After learning the skill of your choice, don’t hesitate to put it into practice even when school resumes again. This will further enhance the skill thereby making you perfect in it.
Enrol for a Professional Certification Course
The university might be closed but there are other avenues for learning. You can enrol in short courses online or for professional classes that will grant you certain qualifications that may become relevant in future.
Even if you do not have the money to pay for these courses, you can go for free ones on portals like Coursera or Edx.
You don’t necessarily have to get a certificate; the idea is to acquire new knowledge that will be relevant to your career goals or aspirations. Like the old saying goes “No knowledge is a waste.”
Get a job
While you are at home, you might as well make a little money. Get a job as an intern or assistant in an office or company preferably close to you so you don’t spend too much on transport fares.
You can even get a job as a paid apprentice at a salon or creative studio. Even more, you may decide to go for something freelance like writing or blogging.
In the course of finding a place to work, the basic thing to do is to find any industry or company that is related to your course of study in school, get enrolled and learn the ropes in that field.
By so doing, you’d gain more experience that will give you an edge in your profession.
The beauty of the internet is that you can get connected to so many job opportunities without necessarily breaking a sweat.
The money made may not be the kind that will set you up for life, but it may be enough to take care of some needs. Moreover, working would be fun and educational.
You learn the value of time and money and attain the essence of work ethic and work culture. Which no one would teach you within the four walls of a school.
Volunteer
Volunteering is a great way to give back to society or just do some good with your time. You can volunteer at NGOs or religious organizations, where the aim is to help others and better the society.
You could also get involved in a number of empowerment programs tailored for young people where certain skill sets you possess may be needed and you can acquire new ones also.
There is a measure of accomplishment and sense of fulfilment that comes with serving humanity. It also exposes you to great opportunities like training, travel e.t.c.
Travel
There is never a bad time to travel. As a student, you may not have a lot of resources available for long leisurely trips, but you can visit another state within the country or just other cities within your state.
Travelling can be fun and educational at the same time for students.
It is also a great way for students to learn more about the world around you and open yourself to alternative cultures tradition and lifestyles.
You could travel to other African cities or continents if you can afford it or you have a sponsor as well. The important thing though, is that you keep your ear on the ground while on your travels, so you are well informed when the strike is called off.
Attend Seminars and Personal Development Events The period at home offers a great opportunity to improve your social skills. Attend conferences and seminars as well as events.
It does not have to be professional or vocational seminars or events. It could be events that offer opportunities to explore your hobbies or just enjoy yourself.
Also, this offers opportunities for networking and exposes you to new connections. It could be book readings, slam poetry competitions, meetups, concerts e.t.c
BONUS TIP Student Ambassador
The best way to earn even as school is on strike is to become a Student Ambassador with Kwaba. This is a new property listing website that caters to the accommodation needs of students.
This opportunity is open to everyone who can refer other students to pick an accommodation through you.
All you have to do is make out to engage with students who are looking for off-campus accommodation especially the new students in school.
You get to earn commissions on every successful referral and can even have your next rent paid by Kwaba.
Conclusion
The truth is that being on an “indefinite” strike sucks; however, being positive about how you spin it, could make the time really worth your while.
Can you think of other ways students can engage themselves pending when ASUU calls off the strike.
