Do you mind dropping some telegram links for Product design(ui/ux) and ofcourse other jobs if you know.. on telegram

Im not aware of specific telegram links for UI/UX jobs, I just know there are a few telegram links for all forms of remote jobs and you can scroll through all the daily postings to find the ones your skill-sets match and apply to them.
From within telegram, just use the search box and search for "Remote Jobs" or other similar keywords and you will find existing groups you can join where remote jobs are advertised daily and most times they don't care about your geographical location.

Below is a screenshot of what one of them looks like.

Hello bruv. thanks for this info. I’ve been into DevOps for a while now and I’m looking for a place to start practicing, even if its an internship just to get industry experience. Can you suggest options, can I contact you via email
DevOPs is actually in high demand globally bro. Why limit yourself to doing just internship when you can practice professionally for many firms globally?

If you have Telegram or Telegram X installed on your phone, just search for "Remote Jobs", you will find a few groups for finding remote jobs from anywhere in the world.
Definitely some of the jobs you will find will need your skills, just go ahead and follow the application procedures.

Note: You may want to refine your resume to match standards used in the country you're applying to. For example, US firms won't take your resume seriously if it looks like those you use in Nigeria, they'll just laugh at you if you list crazy contents like religion, date of birth, local government area, marital status etc on your resume, nobody cares about all that in the countries I've been to, its only Nigeria that things are done weird. So, you may want to Google up sample resumes for the countries you're looking into.

Goodluck bro.

This is the first biased post I've seen from Explorers. You can't just name one bad road by the city or state its located in. Does it make any sense to take a picture of one bad road in Oshodi and tag it " Bad Roads in Lagos"? One bad road in Atlanta and tag it "Bad road in Georgia"?

If you're out of ideas of what to post, stay quiet. If you can't afford to build any road yourself, don't criticise those that did .

Lets see the picture of the roads to your hometown before you start criticizing what serves some communities regardless of its shortcomings .

Hello Sir,

Thanks for your words of motivation, I'm currently jobless and looking to learn a skill to join the digital world, I know it's not a 1day stuff but I'm willing to commit to it, my regret was searching for employment not knowing such could have made me a better person since after graduating 2015, joined banking and later left.

Hello bro I tried joining meet-up but I can't access it with the error showing email is blocked, that's the 4th email I have created and tried same error.

Any tips how to join, and please can I get your email or so I'd like to connect with you please.

Since I'm totally new I'd need a good niche to join that will still be relevant in decades to come.

Thanks.
I didnt know meetup had such restrictions from Nigeria, I guess some Nigerians may have messed it up with their scam tactics - especially since you can meet people from all over the world there and join any meeting you want with similar minds.
Have you tried registering with a VPN? That can give you a different country's IP in case you are being blocked because of your current location. You can also try downloading the meetup app and registering through it.

Meetup is just a place to meet people and not necessarily a place to start learning your skills from because most of the meetings will assume you already have a background and understanding of whatever is being discussed. So, to avoid looking confused while ure on those calls, I'd suggest you take your time to build upon the skills you are interested in first and expand your knowledge or get motivation by joining others on meetup or other similar sites.

You can find some alternatives to meetup here

Bro, I actually think you have done a lot for yourself learning to code in HTML and CSS and kinda wonder about why you decided to "dropout". I guess the answer isn't that difficult to understand - passion and motivation.
If you have passion for something, you tend to put in put in all your efforts to accomplish it. When you feel motivated as well, you tend to put in more. I think you can actually create that motivation for yourself if you surround yourself with folks in same line as you are.

Im not outrightly saying you need to go back to programming. If you don't have a passion for it, you will just be doing what you dont like and may give up again. But we designs and programming is actually a surefire way to get working remotely. Your understanding of programming again will open many doors, especially now that every organization is looking for blockchain programmers.

Most blockchain programmers switched from their original programming skills to languages specific to blockchain programming like solidity. For me, I dont really like programming and would rather hire a programmer to do the work versus investing time in it.

If you already have all you need to master this area, why not just set out a goal to master as much of that area as possible within a short time, say before the end of the year, while you occasionally assess yourself to measure your progress? While you're doing that, be sure whatever projects you're working on can translate to a portfolio that potential clients can see about you, which replaces resume most times for techy jobs...

Regarding the motivation you need, you may find www.meetup.com as a valuable site. There are apps for it as well. If programming is what you like, you can join groups of both local and international programmers there and yall can link up. There are countless meet-ups for any thing you like and you can connect there in no time.

If you are in Nigeria, I would think programming will give you more remote opportunities than cybersecurity as most cybersecurity roles require you making changes in secure environments and background checks etc are often required.

So bro, please first ask yourself if you have a passion for coding and if you do, set goals for yourself and get the motivation you need by connecting with folks that share same or similar thoughts with you. Dont let the learning curve be a barrier, rather it should be a motivation to stick to your set goals. It will be all smiles after you've paid that due - putting in the extra effort.

I guarantee you you'd be getting many programming gigs from everywhere once you've established a formidable portfolio for yourself.

Goodluck bro

Hello, bro

Thanks for your response. I wonder why they banned you, because everything you've said on this thread has been very very helpful and inspiring. I've read your posts on the thread and have a good idea of the kind of mind that could produce those thoughts

Yes, I was learning how to code using an e-book and practicing on my laptop. I had covered HTML5 and CSS3 to a very good extent, and was at the beginning part of JavaScript, when I somehow 'dropped out' and abandoned the thing. I was worried that it would take a long time before I became proficient as a programmer and start getting jobs. I'm in my early 30s so I felt the thing would demand another 2 years or more from me.

So, I tried to get something else doing that I felt would not require a long time to learn. And around August last year, I began writing for someone I met here on Nairaland. It's a third-party kind of arrangement where he gets certain jobs and send them to me to execute for him. Although those jobs haven't been consistent and the pay isn't great, it is what I presently do to keep body and soul together. And I feel there's a need for me to make progress and do more with my time and life.

Honestly, I'm sometimes confused and perplexed as to what to do next. But one thing I'm clear about is that the idea of working remotely/freelancing is one that fits my personality. I enjoy staying indoor for days working on the computer and being productive. I would say I really don't have an 'area' right now. I'm trying to see if Cybersecurity is something I can also try.

And I'm not trying to be flatter you, bro, but I just feel I need to connect more with people like you who can help fire me up and give me a push

Sorry for my long epistle...

Wow! I fell in love with your mind reading this!! I'm not so much of a tech person. I tried learning JavaScript around last year but stopped midway when I saw the ground I would have to cover as age isn't very much on my side and there's the pressure to start 'delivering' in life. Then I moved to writing, but getting clients to work with hasn't been funny. Sometimes I'm even confused as to what to do next. But one thing I'm very sure of is that remote working fits my kind of person and would make me even more productive that the traditional 8-5. I just need some fire.

If you don't mind, please, I would like to connect with you. I won't be a trouble. I honestly just feel talking and being connected with you will help me get things right. I need this kind of networking in my life, even if it's just for a push in the right direction. I've sent you an email already.

You really inspired me, thank you so much.

SmartMugu...bro, you are responding to everyone, please don't leave me out. Thanks
Sorry bro, I didnt mean to ignore your post. For some reasons, NL banned me after my posts on this topic. Not sure why. But yeah, we all need some type of push sometimes, I think thats why forums exist - to learn from one another.

You mentioned that you were into Javascript and then moved into writing. Do you consider yourself a developer? Thats not my area though. I have some knowledge of coding, but dont do that on a daily basis, and I dislike writing or too much talking as well. I prefer solving business problems with COTS applications and devices. Not sure if thats related to your area at all.

The India part is true but their reputation is still better than that of Nigerians cheesy

Okay, will send a PM
Well, the poor reputation may be an advantage in regards to cybersecurity roles. The reason is that it takes someone that can think like a criminal to apprehend a criminal. Its all based on the concepts of black hat vs white hat.
So, if a firm thinks Nigerians are behind its repeated cyber attacks, it may prefer to hire a "white hat" Nigerian that will help them permanently resolve that threat.

Same way firms queue up for imprisoned hackers to be released so they can quickly hire them. To neutralize a hacker, they need a better hacker.

Can i get Cybersecurity jobs remotely from Nigeria? Any idea?
I cant tell much about Cybersecurity jobs from Nigeria because I dont live there and don't know much happening there after being here for almost two decades now, but I think there are strong possibilities, especially now that the world is dealing with covid-19 and everyone is working remotely.
If Indians living in India still get cybersecurity jobs with major firms in different parts of the world, then Nigerians in Nigeria should not be left out. Like I said, I had friends in Nigeria working in the IT space for firms all around the world, but not in the Cybersecurity line, but most of them have now left Nigeria.

Thanks

I understand not wanting PMs.

Currently working with Azure (Gotten all the certs I need in Azure / M365) and i have booked my first AWS cert for end of this month. Looking to write up to AWS Security and then move on to S+/CysA+ and then CISSP

Majorly looking at Cloud Security / SoC Analysis and with a bit of experience, Enterprise Governance

You did mention networking and it looks like something I can't run from.. Cos i started from there but i have forgotten most stuff

Might take a refresher courses and then take it from there
You have done a lot already! Thats great. Yeah, networking comes in handy even if you don't have to do most parts of it, but an understanding of routing, switching, subnetting etc comes in handy and a refresher course could help.

The reason is that most times, the organization already have architectural diagrams you need to reference and it will appear like Greek to someone that doesn't understand networking concepts.

Since you already have Security+, adding Network+ or CCNA to it shows your understanding of Networking, and its not really difficult to refresh since you have some existing knowledge. Your understanding of on-prem networking can easily contribute to your understanding of cloud networking, so I'd add that to my skillets too if I were you.

Also, pls dont forget to focus on letting your resume tell a story. Its easy to get overwhelmed by all these certifications, just stick to the ones that will eventually tell a story about your career journey. An organization may choose someone with just 2 or 3 certifications that align with what they need over someone with 20 certifications that makes them feel he's confused.

No you don't. You can take online courses from some Indians that will teach you one aspect of cybersecurity. I wouldn't take a course from someone that says he will teach you everything about Cybersecurity because that's likely to be a lie - Cybersecurity is too broad and is continuously evolving, like now organizations are looking for Cybersecurity experts for IoT (Internet of Things), that area is relatively new and comes with its new brand of threats and defensive measures.
So, just choose one existing area and get someone to train you on it. Master it as much as you can and back it up with certifications.

Bro, can I send a PM? Your exact area is what im looking into - Cybersec
We can discuss here bro. How long have you been considering Cybersec and what area are you interested in. Cybersec itself is very broad and you need to know where you passion lies, EndPoint Security, Application Security, Network Security, Cloud Security etc, you just have to choose one or two areas and have faint knowledge of other areas.
For me, I majored in Network Security and Cloud Security. For Network Security, you have to have a decent knowledge of Cisco Networking - Routing and Switching , and decent understanding of major IDS/IPS and Firewalls like Check Point, Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA / Firepower. For Cloud Security, you can easily pick up udemy courses on AWS Networking/Security or Azure Networking / Security.

Like I mentioned, the areas of cybersecurity are many, so what works for one person may be boring to another.

Sorry I had to turn down the request for PM. I prefer we all learn from.one another here. Plus, I've been burnt in the past by others via PMs.
Cheers.

Thank you.

In your opinion, do you think there is an unfair bias for Nigerians if there are candidates from other countries with the same skill level for a remote role? Why do you think this bias exist and what can an individual do to mitigate it?

I actually don't know about the bias side of things you mentioned. I know racism affects most of us climbing up the career ladder as fast as we would like to, but we still keep on aiming.

If you think external firms won't hire you because you are a Nigerian, most time thats not true. It depends on the area of IT you work and the regulations the organization has to comply with. My current remote job is with a US Bank, and I work around Cybersecurity, dealing with sensitive information for the bank. They obviously will not allow me log into their network from Nigeria since they have no business there and everyone knows Nigeria when it comes to cybercrime. So such organizations will definitely not want to come to Nigeria to hire you unless you bring yourself closer to them.

I had friends that were based in Nigeria and were working for firms in Ghana, South Africa, Canada etc while working from Nigeria. Most of them eventually relocated to Canada but still work remotely. So, I think its still very possible that not every organization will be biased against Nigerians at the same time. Some have worked with dependable and hardworking Nigerians in the past and will just love to work with another Nigerian. All you have to do is just try and watch things gradually unfold.

Please how do i learn this cybersecurity sir?
For me, I had formal trainings on it. After my HND in Elect/Elect in a polytechnic in Nigeria, I proceeded for Bachelors in Information Technology in a US university and a Masters In Cybersecurity in another US University, so it was easy relating to the concepts for me.

Not everyone takes that route though as our backgrounds are likely going to be different. Just understand that Cybersecurity is very broad as well and you just have to choose an area that you like. There are areas like Network Security, Application Security, Endpoint Security, Infrastructure Security, Identity and Access Management, Cloud Security etc. You may only be able to master one or two of these areas, otherwise your resume appears like that of a confused person.

Some people just decide to take remote trainings from one of the numerous Indians that train remotely and back that knowledge up with certifications and it helps them grow, irrespective of their background, because IT actually cuts across multiple disciplines, so anyone from any background can switch to it.

I have seen Nigerian lawyers who switched into IT here in the US as they find it more lucrative, and they began by just taking online trainings from some Indians.

So let's say you're interested in the Application Security aspect of Cybersecurity, you can just do a Google search for "Application Security Training in India" and you will be presented with a bunch of trainers that can train you remotely. Some will even help you build out your resume and give you interview tips.

Goodluck bro.

I would like to find out though;

1. Where you in Nigeria when you got your first remote job?
2. How long since when you started searching for a remote job did it take you to get one?
3. How did you get your first remote job?

I never worked in Nigeria. I moved to the US immediately after college in Nigeria. The remote jobs came after consulting for firms in the US. If you consult for major consulting firms in Nigeria too, that exposes you to international experience and getting remote jobs wouldn't be so hard.

I dont know how working remote from Nigeria really works. I guess most into it are freelancers. But I've been working remotely for over 6 years now and never had any reasons to go to any office.

Sometimes, while I'm in Nigeria I can still work remotely for the parent US firms I work for, and many folks I know here in the IT line are currently working from Nigeria and still get paid in USD. What's the point asking techy guys to come to the office? Thats outdated in this clime, especially with covid fright everywhere.

I think it all starts with choosing a niche within the IT space, for me. I focused on Cybersecurity. Mastered as many areas as I could and got certifications upon certifications added to my bachelor's and master's degrees and let my resume do the talking. It will work same way for anyone, just differentiate yourself from the rest.

You'll be surprised with how many calls for jobs you will get from all around the world and pick which ones u want to mess with. Some firms are even in dire needs of the strengths and smartness in most of us Nigerians and won't even mind relocating you and your family closer to them, as long as you've proven your worth to them.

I dont know if it depends on the companies you have worked for in the past though. For me, all my experiences are for US based firms, none at all in Nigeria. But if you can manage to get yourself into some of the major consulting firms with presence around the globe, like Delloitte, KPMG, E&Y, Accenture, Infosys etc, you're good. Thats how I started my consulting career and later decided to contract for firms than working directly for them as a full time employee - FTE.

Even in cases where your physical presence is needed, these firms will be responsible to get you there, wherever it is in the world. Got tired of that.I prefer those that are entirely remote since I contract now and have decided to cut down on travels.

So, around IT, you can't be wrong with areas like Cybersecurity, Business Intelligence, Data Analysis, Machine learning, Software Engineering /Design, Cloud Computing/Networking/Security etc. There's a huge array of lines for those in other IT areas like programming,, web designs, digital marketing etc.. im just talking about the areas Im familiar with.

Dont jump around, just stick with one area and carve a career around it. Its a common mistake for many to want to include as many unrelated skills on their resume, its wrong. Your resume should tell your audience a story about you, not get them confused about who you really are. Don't let them feel you were a farmer last year, a plumber last month and a tailor today. Choose where ur strengths are and focus on improving on it, highlight your strengths on your resume, then make your resume your tool. One of these areas can keep you employed from your home right there in Nigeria with firms from around the world.

My 2 cents. Goodluck all.

Crime / Re: Baba Ijesha: Nigerians Sign Petition Against Release Of Actor by SmartMugu: 3:44pm On Apr 29, 2021
Yankee101:
How about the law against keeping anyone beyond 48hrs without trial?

Being on bail does not mean he's innocent

He'll have his day in court. Let's be careful how we interprete the law differently for different people

Some folks were just arrested last week before him and are still in jail without trial. We all read about the two guys that harassed a policeman last week and one of them is still in same Panti police station. Why didn't they tell him to go home now because judges are on strike? They won't release that kind of person because he's a nobody and the governor is aware of the case since he rewarded the policeman for being calm. Hasn't it passed 48hrs now? Why isn't the aggressive driver released yet since the judges are still on strike?

The only difference here is that Baba Ijesha is a celebrity with connections. He's probably the favorite actor to some powerful people in Nigeria,, and the others are unknown people that can be kept in same detention center for however long they want without anyone asking any questions.

Even many of those that escaped from detention centers and prisons in Imo and Edo states said they've been there for years without trial. So that 48hr law doesn't work in Nigeria for everyone.

Also, judges on strike may see his release as a reason for their demands to be met and be called back to work since this has gathered national attention already. Who noticed any difference between when they were on strike and when they were not? Now the release of someone like this without trial will definitely gather public outrage and people won't feel comfortable with someone that hasn't been tried around their kids and beg for judges to resume work.. But if they release a nobody under the 48hr pretext, its just a nobody and they don't achieve anything for releasing one Mr Nobody

Isnt it same Nigeria police that said bail is free and boldly post it in stations? Let somebody you know wait for the free bail there and watch him get old there behind bars without any trial.

Why didn't DSS intelligence capture when the bombs made it to Lagos and were cleared at the ports headed by northerners? Suddenly, they are aware the bombs are in trucks on their way to Imo? How many states are there in between Lagos and Imo? Their intelligence didn't say the trucks might stop in any of these states, it must be Imo?

Too many lies. Imo attacks are starting to appear masterminded by the government. Soon when we start hearing of bomblasts in Imo, they will suddenly say they warned about it. They never had this types of intelligence when all the weapons that found their ways into the hands of bandits, terrorists etc made it into the country nor had any idea of their destinations to Boko Haram and co.

These people are creating unnecessary fears in South East that wasn't a war zone and may know the people behind all these and are trying to fool everyone on what they are a part of to create instability in that region.
