On why he wants to join the NFF board, Okocha said he wants to give back to Nigerians what the country gave to him during his playing days. He also said that his experience as a player in at least four European countries would be of great benefit to the country if he gets on the board. Okocha, who started his professional career with Eintrecht Frankfurt in Germany and later played for PSG in France, Fanabache in Turkey and Bolton Wanderers in England, said he would want to show Nigerians how football is run in those places. “I am pissed off by comments by some ignorant people who say that we the ex-internationals are aspiring to get to the NFF board just to make money. I have made money and name both in Nigeria and abroad. I am not poor and I don’t think there is money in NFF for me to pinch from. Those who say we are scrambling to be there for financial benefit, perhaps, do not know my worth,” he said. Okocha also spoke on the likely appointment of Samson Siasia as chief coach of Super Eagles, pointing out that Siasia had done well with age grade teams and that he deserved to move up the rung. He added that what Siasia needed at this point is encouragement for him to get results. “Siasia has paid his dues in football in this country and I think he would do well as the Super Eagles’ coach if properly encouraged. With his achievement at the World Youth Championship and the Olympics, where he won silver as coach, I think he can take us far if the atmosphere is good and conducive for him. “I also feel that Siasia should be paid good salary to do the job well. I don’t see anything wrong in what he demanded for, although it is left for the NFF to agree on what to pay based on what it has in its vault,” he submitted. http://sunnewsonline.com/webpages/sports/2010/aug/25/sports-25-08-2010-001.htm |

Nigeria, according to him, has come a long way in experimenting with democracy and therefore should strive to entrench democratic culture rather than embarking on acts capable of subverting the system of government. He added that democracy is the smoothest form of government in the world. “We also need to follow the activities and programmes of the government most especially those of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) closely since we are about entering into a new age where the votes of every electorate will count, and when the government of the day has been taking conscious efforts to give Nigeria the most transparent elections in history,” Mr Babangida said. “This is why I call on our supporters both in Nigeria and in the Diaspora to be conscious of what they do, what they say and where to be and not to be at every necessary period as we prepare for the elections to come. “If anyone is seen to be breaking the rules, let it not be seen that any of our supporter is involved. If pejorative political statements are to be made, let it not be known that such is coming from any of our supporters and if the idea of political rabble-rousing is going to be on the table, let it not be traced to anything IBB or his supporters.” Mr Babangida explained that his decision to play politics by the rules is mainly why he is keeping his campaign strategies under wraps, stressing that he believed nothing should be done when the PDP, which he referred as a very vibrant, most experienced and robust party, has not unfolded its agenda for the elections. The presidential aspirant, however, said he would not mind if his supporters begin to make comments in the media, especially on ideological issues meant to reshape the future of the country and help democracy grow. He said: “However, I will not mind if we begin to hit the news as great facilitators of unassailable political ideas and ideologies meant to shape the future of our country. I will be glad if the best thesis, theories and sermons on how to change the face of this country will be coming from our camp from now till the date of election. That is how to help democracy grow in the country.” |
Let all the misinformed people in our mist continue with vague criticisms. If they don’t really, the coast will too clear and it would seem we never crossed any hurdle before getting to our destination… Aso Rock 2011. Let them spend their whole time discussing irrelevancies while we spend just little of our time educating them. Jut little of our time. We will reserve the rest energy propagating the gospel according to IBB, Chapter Aso Rock, Verses qualitative education, good infrastructures, social amenities, strong and viable economy, and resuscitation of our industries, good governance; general growth and development. We shall never be deterred until we achieve our objective… getting IBB into Aso Rock come 2011. That is our goal; that is our dream. |

The work of Nigeria is not complete for as long as there is any one Nigerian who goes to bed on empty stomach. The work is not complete for as long as our people remain divided by avoidable mutual suspicions, distrust and ancient fears. There is still work to be done for as long as our youth roam the streets without food with meal tickets that cannot buy a meal. We all have work to do for as long as factories we have lie in waste or idle, our utilities remain undependable and outsiders who wish us well are reluctant to invest in our economy. We have a variety of ill-health afflictions, ignorance, and lack the ability to domesticate our environment for the service of our people. We are yet to benefit maximally from research and development, and from science and technology. Recent events have shown that we cannot take the unity of our country for granted. We see a new challenge in conquering new suspicions and demolishing the barriers of injustice and mutual distrust and antagonism. We must now replace clashes among faiths with faith in our nation. We must now ---------- Ibrahim Babangida |
'But no nation can base its survival and development on luck and prayers alone while its leadership fritters away every available opportunity for success and concrete achievement. ' -----Ibrahim Babangida 'The average Nigerian person has come to reconcile himself with the fact that his or her social progress remain essentially in his or her hands in collaboration with other fellow Nigerians and not merely relying on what government alone could provide for him or her.' -----Ibrahim Babangida word! |
