SportsMikel Named Super Eagles Captain by smile11s(op): 6:20pm On Apr 01, 2010
Lars Lagerback has named John Mikel Obi as Nigeria’s captain, saying he needs a ‘fresh young face’ to guide the troops for the long term.

The Chelsea starlet replaces Nwankwo Kanu, whose place in the squad must now come into question.

“He is a young player, a good player with a great future, and I think already he shows great promise,” Lagerback said in Lagos on Wednesday. “As we go into the future, it is important to get a fresh, young face to be the team leader.”

Lagerback dismissed doubts about Mikel's ability to handle the responsibility, saying leadership cannot be learned.

“I speak to him and he knows it is a big responsibility. I am sure he will have no problems with the rest of the team.”

On former skipper Kanu, Lagerback refused to be drawn. “I have made my decision. It is important that every member of the team respect and work with the new captain. It is more important to be selected to play for your country than to be captain.”

PoliticsSouth South Threatens To Break Away by smile11s(op): 3:34am On Feb 26, 2010
Specifically, the South –South Elders and Leaders Forum at the end of an emergency meeting in Abuja said they were aware of attempts being made on the life of Jonathan “as part of the sinister and heinous agenda of the cabal.”

Addressing the press at the end of the meeting attended by 26 leaders from the zone, Dr. Mike Oberabor said the people of the South-South believed in the unity of the country, but would not accept being treated as second class citizens.
“We believe in the oneness and unity of Nigeria. We have fought for it and we trust in it. The Nigerian Constitution is what binds all of us together. If it is subverted, then there is no basis of our continued mutual existence.

Therefore, the people of the South-South will have no other option than to break away from Nigeria. We cannot remain in a country where we are regarded as second class citizens,” the group warned. At the meeting, presided over by Chief Edwin Clark, according to a statement read by Dr Oberabor, were Admiral Mike Okhai-Akhigbe, Professor Lawrence Ekpebu, Alabo Tonye Graham-Douglas, Olorogun Felix Ibru, Chief Ephraim Faloughi-Spiff, Hon. Bolere Ketebu, Mrs Helen Esuene and Chief Jackson Sunny Udoh.

Others were Senator Fred Brume, Air. Commodore Idongesit Nkangha, Senator Tari Sekibo, Chief Ewa Ita Henshaw, Chief Francis Doukpolagha, Dr B.K Adasen and Dr M.P Okonny.
Others were Chief P.Y Biakpara, Lady Anne Yougha, Dame Ambrose Akpanika, Rev. Grace Ekanem, Hon Denyanbofa Dimro, Hon Chibudom Nwuche, Lady Ime Udom and Chief Ayakeme Whisky.

The South-South leaders said that they watched in utter dismay and disbelief, the purported and stage-managed arrival of Alhaji Yar’Adua, which was allegedly orchestrated to cause destabilisation in the country.

“The secrecy surrounding the way and manner in which Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua arrived the counry is suspect. The Acting President was not briefed before and after the arrival of Yar’Adua. Ordinarily, the Acting President should receive the President on his arrival from an overseas trip.
“The Press was not allowed to cover the arrival. The coincidental power outage at the time the aircraft arrived is suspicious. The evacuation of President Yar’Adua from an aircraft into an ambulance in the dark is questionable.

“The Acting President and members of the Executive Council of the Federation and indeed the Nigerian public have not seen Alhaji Yar’Adua since his purported arrival,” the group queried.
What angered the South-South leaders more was the deployment of soldiers in the airport ahead of Yar’Adua’s arrival without the knowledge of the Acting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

To the South –South Elders, this was an aberration and tantamount to treason, which must be probed. The group also alleged that there was massive movement of troops from various military formations and an attempt to transfer power to the military.

“This is grossly unconstitutional. We are also aware that attempts are being made on the life of the Acting President as part of the sinister and heinous agenda of the cabal,” it was alleged.
Acting President Goodluck Jonathan was warned never to take order from Turai, wife of the president, as he remained the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

“Nigeria is a democratic republic and not a monarch and an allusion that the Acting President is taking brief from Turai Yar’Adua is insulting to the Acting President and indeed, to the Nigerian people,” the elders declared.

SportsKanu Is 55 Years Old! by smile11s(op): 10:18pm On Dec 06, 2009
Nwankwo Kanu's contribution to Portsmouth's win over Burnley in the English Premiership on Saturday has been hailed by his club's director of football Avram Grant.

Kanu came off the bench in the 59th minute to help Portsmouth record a 2-0 victory.

The 33-year-old's clever pass set up Hermann Hreidarsson to score the first goal for Pompey.

And he continued to torment the Burnley defence with his deft touches.

Kanu has started just twice for the Premier League strugglers this season but has a growing reputation as an impact substitute which has seen him called into action from the bench 13 times.

And according to Grant, Kanu's contribution on Saturday was very important.

"Football has changed a lot in the last 10 years, it has become more athletic and more aggressive," he said.

"But I think we need to look for intelligent players like Kanu because in one move he can change the game, like he did for the first goal."

Asked why the former Arsenal man did not start against Burnley, Grant joked:

"It's very easy - he's 55 years old. He's 60 next year."

But he added "He's highly intelligent and thinking about the game and he's very good for the team."

PoliticsThe Four Likely Candidates To Replace Yar'dua by smile11s(op): 5:34am On Dec 06, 2009
The north are preparing one of this four candidates to become the vice president to Jonathan.
By the end of the first tenure, he will continue the northern era of ruling Nigeria for the second tenure.

Likely candidates
Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido
Alhaji Sule Lamido is currently the governor of Jigawa state. Before he assumed office, he served as foreign minister from 1999 to 2003.
The 51-year-old politician was is believed to be the choice of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who is said to be desperate to atone for his sins of imposing Yar’Adua on the nation in 2007.
Although political analysts believe Lamido’s candidature might be good, a source warned that his choice may not have the backing of the northern oligarchy. The reason, according to sources, is that Lamido has some radical ideological bent and might not readily pander to the wishes of the oligarchy.

Lamido played a key role in the aborted third republic when he was a national officer of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Bauchi governor, Isa Yuguda
Isa Yuguda is a first-term Governor of Bauchi State. He used to be a member of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, now he is a member of PDP.
Yuguda is a former Aviation Minister and former Managing Director of Inland Bank has four wives; the fourth, and most recent is the daughter of the Nigerian President, Umaru Yar'Adua, Nafisat.
The governor whose defection to the PDP is still a subject of legal challenge by the ANPP, is believed to be the choice of members of the ailing president’s kitchen cabinet. He is said to be preferred above Saidu Dakingari of Kebbi. Although Yuguda might not readily accept it, it was believed that he ditched the ANPP on whose platform he won the Bauchi governorship to brighten his chances of succeeding his father-in-law should Yar’Adua not able to contest in 2011.

Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, Secretary to Government of Federation,
Incumbent secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, is also said to be in contention. He is believed to be the choice of the Northern oligarchy for his trustworthiness and loyalty.
A source said that it was these qualities that made President Yar'Adua to appoint him to the sensitive position of Defence Minister in July 2007 despite the fact that he had no military experience. In September 2008, Yar'Adua again appointed him as the Secretary to The Government of The Federation after firing Alhaji Babagana Kingibe.
A source that claimed to know Ahmed well insists that Ahmed’s steady rise to national prominence can be said to be the product of his dedication and loyalty to northern cause.

The 47-year-old SGF started off as a career civil servant from Bauchi state in 1977
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Ahmed to the position of Head of Civil Service on December 18, 2000.
He holds the titles of Ajiyan Katagum, a Katagum Emirate position, and the Akowonjo of Idanre Kingdom, in Ondo State.
Northern power brokers are said to be angry with former President Obasanjo for imposing a sickly Yar’Adua and are looking for a candidate that knows the workings of the government and that can be trusted. “I think Ahmed fits the bill and with him around you can go and sit back and watch.”

Senate President, David Mark
David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark is the President of the Senate and represents Benue South constituency at the upper chambers of the national assembly. He was born on April 1948. Mark was elected to the position on June 6, 2007 for the third term.
Prior to his political career, Mark had served as military governor of Niger State and as minister of communication. He is an Idoma Christian.

Political pundits say the choice of Mark can only materialize should Jonathan decide to throw in the towel immediately Yar’Adua resigns. Although there is already insinuation that the Vice President was being pressured to consider such a move, it is feared that the choice of the senate president might further worsen the ethno-geographical suspicion in the country.

Christianity EtcTupac Song Selected For Vatican Playlist by smile11s(op): 9:58pm On Dec 05, 2009
-- Music from late rapper Tupac Shakur has been included as part of the Vatican's official MySpace Music playlist.

The seat of the Catholic Church released a list of 12 songs onto the social networking Web site's streaming music service this week when the site launched in the United Kingdom.

Among selections from Mozart, Muse and Dame Shirley Bassey is the slain rapper's song "Changes," which was released two years after his shooting death on a greatest hits album in 1998.

"The genres are very different from each other, but all these artists share the aim to reach the heart of good minded people," the Vatican wrote on its official MySpace Music page.

The lyrics of "Changes" describe Shakur's desire to change a grim life of drugs, crime and violence on the streets.

Lyrics of the song, which is labeled as "explicit," include 'Is life worth living, should I blast myself?" "Give the crack to the kids, who the hell cares, one less hungry mouth on the welfare," and "My stomach hurts, so I'm looking for a purse to snatch."

At another point, Tupac sings: "Cause both black and white are smokin' crack tonight."

In contrast, the playlist also contains selections from the album "Music of the Vatican" such as "Advocata Nostra" and "Causa Nostrae Laetitiae."

CultureThe Nigerian Market Place by smile11s(op): 5:44pm On Dec 02, 2009
By Kennedy Ihewuokwu

I recently watched an American football game in a large stadium filled with sport-loving Americans. The excitement and passion I saw on everyone’s face strained me in trying to understand the game. The referee blew his whistle almost every 10 seconds. Either a rough tackle or some other fouls had been committed. I wondered how Americans enjoyed the game with all the regular stops. The females that cheered the team and crowd during the half times were entertaining with their performance. Even though I didn’t enjoy the game because I couldn’t understand the rules on a short time, the American unifying strength I observed during the game unexpectedly entertained me. I began to wonder if these weren’t the individualist Americans. The serious minded people I would see in the street and that cared about pursuing personal goals. At the field of play, they were collective for fun and to win. My American friend that invited me paid for my bottles of beer at the pub. His team won, I know. On usual days, we must individually pay for our beers. I later explained to him about the different Americans I saw during the match. His answers marvelled me and there I began my thoughtful journey back to Nigeria. “The American football is a unifying metaphor in America. It unites all kinds of America no matter your individual pursuit or achievement,” he said.

I began to think of Nigeria, the country I grew up loving. What would I call the Nigerian metaphor? Ask any Nigeria this question; her/his answer would quickly be “soccer”. I can’t forget the lovely Nigerian people on the day we won the Olympic gold in Atlanta. Kanu Nwakwo found a place in every Nigerian’s heart. People, who weren’t interested in the soccer game, couldn’t overlook the celebration of Atlanta 1996. But in determining a metaphor for a country, I would credit football to the British who brought the game to us. Football has a long tradition in Europe. It is more than a century old in the European continent. In the European history, the game brought the idea of a friendly travel from one location to another. Even till today, football clubs and their fans travel from one city or country to another. Is that travelling passion for sports present in Nigeria? My answer will be “no”. Our premier league within the support of Nigerians cannot be compared with that of Americans or their European counterparts. But, the fortitude of traveling is still present in Nigeria. It can be found on the other way, Nigerians travelling in search of money. Travelling to sell or buy goods and products is most common.

Drive through a slow traffic in Lagos, the market will suddenly appear to you. Unexpected products would be displayed by this ‘traffic hawkers.’ If you feel you would not buy from them, you must be deceiving yourself. Arguable, you would see an item that you had planned to buy or a product that had been out of stock at your usual market place.

On my recent visit in Nigeria, this year, I saw a white American hawking sausage rolls at a slow traffic. The sausage roll he hawked was the regular type popularly called Gala. He didn’t fail to attract Nigerians amazingly looking at him and caused monopoly at the fellow Nigerians hawking their daily Gala snacks. The next day, I saw his picture on an evening newspaper. He claimed to had hawked Gala because he needed a better perspective to understand Nigerians for his research. That might sound unnecessary, but there must be a reason why he chose hawking.

The Fulani people carry their stocks and animals travelling from one location to another. This had been a long tradition. I am sure still that the tradition exists today within the conservative Fulani people. Take a trip to an Igbo village in the Southeast; you would hear the four market days of Afo, Nkwo, Eke and Orie. On the Nwko market day in my village, the city square would be filled up with market women. Most of them had travelled from the neighbouring villages to sell their stocks. The same tradition can also be traced to the Southwestern part. The idea by which the Yoruba market women divide their market place in stalls can be traced back to tradition. Some markets had remained in the same location for ages. Many of the same traditional foodstuffs sold in market places, the ancestors of modern Nigerians had sold them at the same location. So too, these practices have some beliefs, attitudes and social norms that endured the onslaught of centuries of colonial and slavery influence.

The marketplace is an appropriate metaphor for understanding the multiculturality of modern Nigeria. For centuries before the arrival of the Europeans, the marketplace was the community centre for a town and the surrounding settlements. It was the centre of commerce, the local town hall, and the main social centre all rolled into one. The characteristics are still true till today. The traditional market place created the today’s Nigerian middle class society. The middle class that own large stalls at Onitsha and Alaba markets. That sells and imports car spare parts and electronics. Many other middle class members also are involved in one trade or the other, and travel from one location to another. The travelling zeal and characteristics in the Nigerian market place includes its diversity, dynamism, and the balance between different traditions and cultures.

I am sure any Nigerian that reads this piece would understand that the Nigerian market place is our unifying metaphor. Although it is something we might overlook, but it has helped in building the country, irrespective of the inconsistencies that exist at the top. There are other factors that can be listed; we all know that they cannot be counted. Apart from crime that the international media projects about the country, the market oriented people are still a big part of what Nigerians are known for.
