For Blessing Nwafor, 17, from Nwaezeko, Abakiliki in Ebonyi State life has become a misery as her family members and others she had run to have abandoned her. Now, the doctors say her life is in danger as she is discharging yellowish fluid mixed with blood.

The travails of the vulnerable young girl started when on April 16, this year her lesson teacher whose name she could only remember as Stanley E. raped and impregnated her in the process.

According to Blessing, an SS3 student of St. Jude Secondary School, Nwaezeko, Abakiliki, she had gone to Stanley’s house to collect her Mathematics textbook she would use to do a test the next day in school when the lesson teacher started preaching to her about love.

“He told me that he loves me and that he would want us to make love. I told him no, that he is too old for my age and that I am his student, but he grabbed me and locked his door. He raised the volume of his radio as I started shouting. He tore my shirt and pants and raped me as I was crying and begging him to leave me alone.

After making love to me he told me sorry and I left his house crying. People in the neighbourhood were asking me what happened, but I could not tell them because I was ashamed,” she said.
After she was raped by Stanley who also told her that he works with the Ebonyi State government, Blessing missed her monthly period in April, making her return to Stanley ’s house to tell him of the development.

She told me that Stanley only gave her 16 tablets. She could not say their names and brand and asked her to take eight in the morning and another eight in the evening.
She said after taking the drugs, she became uncomfortable for the whole day, but nothing happened and she did not tell her parents of what transpired.
But after four months, she became very sick and as this was persistent and regular she told her elder sister what had happened to her.

Her elder sister then told their mother who told their father. Unfortunately for her, her no nonesense father swore that she would not bear a bastard in his house.
Thus her father, Mr Chinedu Nwafor, took her to Stanley’s house, but they were shocked to see that he had packed out from the house and vamoosed into the thin air.
Those living in the neighbourhood told them that Stanley had packed out in the dead of the night soon after Blessing came to tell him that she was pregnant.
Her father also took her to the Ebonyi State Government house, but the government workers said they knew nobody with named Stanley E.

Last month, Blessing’s father chased her away, telling her never to come home again.
As she was wandering on the street, a Good Samaritan doctor saw her and took her to his house, but the doctor’s wife did not like the idea of her husband bringing home a strange pregnant teenager.
According to Blessing, she stayed in the house of the doctor for one month. When he contacted her elder sister and she was taken to St. Jude’s Hospital in Abakiliki.

“ At St. Jude, they did scan for me and said that they saw a baby boy, but that part of the body of the baby is damaged already. So, they told my sister that they would need N150,000 to carry out an operation on me for me to survive. This made my sister to abandon me there and run away.

“This was happening around 7p.m. so the doctor there said I should be allowed to pass the night there and to leave in the morning. I pleaded with the doctor to carry out the operation as I pledged that after it I will be working for his hospital to defray the bill, but he refused and instead gave me N500 to go home.
“I used the N500 to go back to the first doctor that took me to his hospital; when I explained to him what happened he said there was nothing he could do again, he gave me N300 to go back to my house.
“But when I got home, my father disowned me completely, saying that his daughter who bears Blessing had long died. I cried and cried, but he chased me away.

“This happened on a Sunday and I left and was wandering until Tuesday when I decided to go to Father Mbaka in Enugu for Adoration Worship. After Adoration, I wanted to see Father Mbaka, but the security men did not allow me and on Thursday the security men chased me away. I stayed outside the Adoration centre gate.

“It was at the gate that two boys and two girls saw me and bought me food after which they paid my fare to St Mary Catholic Church, Trans-Ekulu, Enugu last Thursday. At the church one of the reverend fathers gave me N300 to go home, but I remained in the church because I had no place to go to,” Blessing explained.

At the close of church service on Sunday, Blessing began another walk into the unknown when she now met the President of Global Society for Anti-Corruption, Mr Frank Ezeona by the side of St Mary Catholic Church who bought her food.
After eating, she said that Ezeona also gave her some tissue papers from his car with which she changed her pad and later brought her to my office in Enugu where Blessing who was sobbing profusely asked other Nigerians to come to her rescue.
Moved by her plight, Ezeona, therefore, called on public-spirited individuals, as well as the Ebonyi and Enugu State Governments to come to the aid of Blessing before she dies.

Brick & Lace is a Jamaican R&B and Dancehall duo; Nyanda & Nailah Thourborne, real life sisters signed to Akon's Konvict Muzik/Kon Live Distribution label, 180 Entertainment, and Geffen Records. The name "Brick & Lace," is a represents feminine strength; dual sides of a woman in which can be felt in the fusion of Dancehall & R&B, both sides are seen through the music. "Lace," was the name suggested by their mother, and Nyanda added "Brick," to form "Brick & Lace" which helped define their sound.
Both women primarily encompass one side of their "Brick & Lace," analogy as noted in a March 2007 Yo! Raps interview. "Her voice, tone and stylizing and the way she spits her lyrics is edgy. She loves to push the envelope," Nailah said referring to Nyanda. Nyanda on the other hand views Nailah's voice as "versatile with a more R&B slant. The group however was not always a duo: their sister Tasha Thorbourne was once part of Brick & Lace. "It has been scary and at first it was like we couldn't move on. ABUJA—The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Mrs Farida Waziri, yesterday pleaded with an Abuja high court to dismiss the legal actions instituted by Chief Gani Fawehinmi challenging her appointment on the account that only her predecessor, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has the locus standi to challenge his replacement before the court.
She dismissed the radical Lagos lawyer who brought the suit as a meddlesome interloper who should not be heard.

Addressing the court yesterday, counsel to the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Chile Okoroma, said that it would be synonymous to crying more than the bereaved for Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) to be concerned about the issue of re-appointment than Mallam Nuhu Ribadu himself.

He maintained that Chief Gani Fawehinmi had not only failed to establish his locus but that he had also failed to prove before the court that he was interested in occupying the office of the EFCC chairman or how the appointment of Waziri as EFCC boss affected him as a person.

Okoroma submitted that being a Senior Advocate of Nigeria was not sufficient enough to cloth Chief Fawehinmi with the locus standi to maintain the suit.

According to him, “Being a Senior Advocate, tax payer or even a presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party, does not place him on a higher pedestal over and above an average tax payer, any other SAN, or party aspirants.

“I therefore submit that this action is a waste of court’s time as the plaintiff has no civil right and obligation to be protected by this court by virtue of this suit,” he added.
Earlier, counsel to President Yar’Adua, Mr. Simon Egede had submitted yesterday, that it was evident that Nuhu Ribadu was never re-appointed by the president for a second four-year term after his tenure expired in 2003.

Down! Down! Down! That seems to be the only music the price of crude oil is responding to in the international market; from $147 a few weeks ago, it has suddenly plummeted to an abysmal $58 and there are indications that the freefall is not over yet.

There is no hiding the fact that oil-exporting countries like Nigeria and their constituent states have been gripped by the fear of budget deficits.

Akwa Ibom State as a major oil producing state is not immune to this global shock. In fact, at its executive council meeting last Wednesday, Gov. Godswill Akpabio was said to have told his cabinet members to tighten their belts and be ready to mop up all available sources of internally generated revenue.
But in an attempt to avoid the possible gloomy days he approved a whopping N12 billion to be sunk into agricultural sector.

This ‘Operation go-back-to-farm’ is to cover mainly chicken, fish and other animal productions. It is codenamed Accelerated Livestock and Fish Production Programme (ALFIPP).
The state commissioners for information and agriculture, Mr Aniekan Umanah and Prof. Etok Ekanem, respectively while conveying the outcome of the exco meeting to the press on Thursday, said the three-year programme commerce next year with the establishment of three commercial fish farms each in the three senatorial districts of the state, believing the t such would guide the production of livestock and fishery sub-sector.

But to fast track the chicken production aspect of the programme, Umanah said another N33.5 million was equally approved, for the commencement of poultry hatchery at Mbiaya Uruan. The poultry hatchery was a Federal Government project started and abandoned more than 30 years ago. But Umanah said the Federal Ministry of Agriculture was happy to hand over the project to the state government.

Akwa Ibom State needs an average of 45,000 day-old chicks per week whereas what it is actually getting was in the region of 3000 only from the state-run hatchery at Use Offot, Uyo.
To make this multi-billion naira projects successful, Umanah said the state exco has approved “the opening of discussion with technical partners in agriculture who have expressed interest to work with the state. Council took this decision in reaction to the scarcity or unavailability of livestock and fisheries development in the entire South-South region.”

But who are these technical partners? Prof. Ekanem said they are Israelis who are willing to put in 40 percent of the cost while the state would contribute the remaining 60 percent of the project: “This is the first most serious intervention by government in agriculture since the creation of this state. We lacked the framework to implement agric programmes when we came in 2007, so we spent far less than was budgeted. This year we have improved to about N1.6 billion. We know that Akwa Ibom does not have a lot of land mass, that is why we are going into fishery and poultry production.

“We shall also ensure that we give 50 farmers three goats – one male and two females- in each of the local government areas so as to reverse the current trend where goats consumed in the state are brought in from outside. We want to rather export goats to other states.”

When all these begin to yield the expected dividends, Ekanem said the stake would rake in not less than N10 billion annually while at least 100,000 direct or indirect new jobs would be created.
“We are doing this because we know that whether the price falls or rises, Nigeria’s oil would finish some, maybe, in the next forty years. Mexico had the largest oil field 90 years ago, now it has shrunk. So even if we don’t have oil again, we wont suffer now that we have made a giant and serious effort to go back to agriculture.”

Umanah added: “We are aware of the oil price fall. But it will not affect any of our projects. His Excellency is determined to complete all the project he has started.”
