I have a family friend who lives in America,she used to teach her children her native language,they were born there.One day,the authorities there told her that she had kidnapped those kids,and wanted to take them away from her.She insisted that they were her kids.They asked her to prove it,she spoke her language and they responded.That was her saving grace.You now see whay you should teach your children your native language?

Really,I am not happy about all these hating and stuff going on here.It's making me sick,and I am sure I speak for others.This is the internet for crying out loud,don't take things personal,also don't because of the fact that this is internet,insult anybody.We are all human beings made by one God,NL is supposed to be a unifying place for Nigerians and friends of Nigeria ,not a wrestling ring,where you want to test your swearing skills on people you can't see.Please,I beg you all in the name of God,stop all these hating.You don't have to reply to every insult,be wise,ignore them,that way,the other person will look like a fool and stop it.I will advice you guys to make peace however you want to do it,though I would have liked it to be on this thread,for posterity's sake.You never know where you will meet yourseves in future.I rest my case.

I speak as a linguist on this one;the fault lies mostly on the parents.Most parents think it is "bush"to teach their kids their language,not just abroad,even here at home.They take pride in the fact that their kids speak English fluently and can't speak their mother tongue.This is evident in the way the parents tell friends about it.They are so proud to tell friends"ahh,my children don't speak Igbo(or any other language),I speak English with them o".Isn't it a shame?Also,it reflects on the names they also give their children.Where are all the names like Udeme,Emem,Imaobong and other beautiful local names?Now,they give-Gift,Promise,Jack and other English names.I am not against foreign names,but I believe they could be added to the local ones to give one an identity.Some parents even go as far as changing their own local names to outlandish names that have no meaning.I want to advice future mothers and fathers to please stop this slow extinction of our culture by giving local names to our children yet unborn because

and a lost culture is a lost generation
Speak your language
Its all you have for identification
Don't let it DIE!!!
