Sports / South Korea In Talks To Host 2030 World Cup With North Korea by soccerblitz: 5:32pm On Jun 12, 2017
The FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea Republic came to a close on Sunday with England taking the championship title following a thrilling 1-0 final against Venezuela at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.

After congratulating the winning English team and Venezuelan runners-up on Sunday, the FIFA President Gianni Infantino travelled to Seoul, the capital of Korea Republic, to meet with the staff of the Korean Football Association at their headquarters.

There he congratulated them on what he called a “fantastic competition” and thanked them for their support and commitment in staging the men’s youth tournament.

He then travelled to the Offices of the President of Korea Republic in Seoul where he was received by the recently-elected President Moon Jae-in.

During talks with Gianni Infantino, the Korean President expressed his love of football, emphasising that it is the most popular and favourite sport of South Koreans, and a sport he believes is one of the most equal and democratic.

He also referred to it being a game that both rich and poor countries can enjoy equally and which has also been used to contribute to inter-Korean relations. Additionally, he explained how football could be used to help developing countries in Africa and Asia.

President Moon-Jae-in spoke to the FIFA President about the possibility of the two Koreas – the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (also known as North Korea) and the Korea Republic (also known as South Korea), co-hosting a FIFA competition along with other neighbouring countries, stressing his belief in the power of football as a tool that can help bring about stabilisation in the region.

Gianni Infantino welcomed President Moon-Jae-in’s suggestions, and after congratulating him on the country’s successful hosting of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, as well as commending the hard work of the Korean Football Association in organising the event, he told the Korean President that both FIFA and the international football community would be happy to provide any assistance that could be helpful to inter-Korean relations, as well as in the Korea Republic’s efforts to help developing countries through football in Africa and Asia.

Sports / The Story Behind The Glory Of Kanu Nwankwo A.k.a Papilo by soccerblitz: 5:40pm On May 22, 2017
Welcome the inaugural edition of “The Story Behind The Glory.”

They say charity begins at home. So it wouldn’t be proper if we don’t start with one of Our own.

We are going to begin this series with Nigeria’s best player of all-time who goes by the name Nwankwo Kanu a.k.a Papilo.

The Brief

Nwankwo Kanu, OON (born 1 August 1976), or simply Kanu, is a retired Nigerian footballer who played as a forward. He was a member of and later captained the Nigerian national team for 16 years from 1994 until 2010. Kanu is a member of the Igbo ethnic group; his name, Nwankwo, means Child born on Nkwo market day in the Igbo languague.

Kanu has won a UEFA Champions League medal, a UEFA Cup medal, three FA Cup Winners Medals and two African Player of the Year awards amongst others. He is also one of few players to have won the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal. He made the third-most substitute appearances in Premier League history, appearing from the bench 118 times.
He is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Club career

Born in Owerri, Nigeria, Kanu began his career at Nigerian league club Federation Works, before moving to Iwuanyanwu Nationale. After a notable performance at the U-17 World Championships he was signed by Dutch Eredivisie in 1993 for €207,047. He made his Ajax debut the following year and went on to score 25 goals in 54 appearances. Kanu also came on as a sub in Ajax’s 1995 Champions League final win over AC Milan. In 1996, Ajax sold Kanu to Serie A side Inter Milan for around $4.7 million. That summer he captained the Nigerian team that won gold at the Olympics, and scored two late goals in the semi-finals against powerhouses Brazil to overturn a 2–3 scoreline into a 4–3 win in extra time. Kanu was also named African Footballer of the Year for that year.

However, soon after returning from the Olympics, Kanu underwent a medical examination at Inter, which revealed a serious heart defect; he underwent surgery in November 1996 to replace an aortic valve and did not return to his club until April 1997. In interviews, Kanu frequently cites his faith as a Christian, and has often mentioned this trying time of his career as an occasion when he prayed to God. Kanu’s experience also led to his founding the Kanu Heart Foundation, an organisation that helps predominantly young African children who suffer heart defects and whose work was expanded to provide aid for homeless children in 2008.

Arsenal

In February 1999, after just twelve games and one goal for Inter, Kanu was signed by Arsenal for approximately £4.15 million. He made his debut for Arsenal, against Sheffield United in the FA Cup. With the score 1–1 and ten minutes to go, the Sheffield United goalkeeper Alan Kelly kicked the ball out of touch so that treatment could be given to Lee Morris. When the ball was thrown back into play by Ray Parlour, although it was intended for Kelly, Kanu chased the throw-in down the right wing unchallenged and centered the ball for Marc Overmars, who scored to make the match 2–1. After the match, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger accepted that it was not right sport-wise and offered to re-play the match which was again won by Arsenal.

Despite the events overshadowing his debut, Kanu’s career was quickly revived at Arsenal. He scored his first goal for the club in the next round of the cup against Derby County, coming off the bench to net the only goal of the game. He quickly became known for his goalscoring prowess from the bench, scoring important goals against Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa as a substitute. He became very popular among the fans for his two-fingered salute which started in 1999 against Middlesbrough – something that he later explained was based on the team’s nickname, The Gunners.

Sports / Fans Cries FOUL As Barcelona Complete The Biggest Comeback Ever by soccerblitz: 10:03am On Mar 09, 2017
Barcelona came from a 4 goal deficit to trash PSG 6-5, and football fans across the globe are not taking it lightly, claiming the Catalans cheated to win the match.

We will be highlighting three incidents that proves what the fans are claiming might be true.

Three key incidents in the game went Barcelona’s way, as many believed Luis Enrique’s benefitted from biased refereeing decisions in the game.

Barcelona’s first penalty

Early in the second half, Leo Messi scored from the spot to put the Catalans 3-0 up.

The spot-kick was awarded after Neymar went down after a collision with the head of falling PSG right-back Thomas Meunier.

Was the penalty a fair call? Many thought Neymar conned the ref running into the PSG defender.

Mascheran should have been sent off

How in god’s name did Javier Mascherano not give away a second half penalty?

The Barcelona defender took out Angel di Maria in the Catalan box just as the PSG forward was aiming at goal from a breakaway attack.

Incredibly, Mascherano added he fouled Di Maria after the game, and yet the referee didn’t see it.

Insane.

Luis Suarez’s mega dive

Barcelona’s fifth goal of the night was also a joke.

Without question, Luis Suarez flung himself to the turf to win a penalty in injury time.

It was never, ever a penalty. However the ref got conned once more.

Sports / OPINION: Why Wenger Is The Perfect Manager For Arsenal by soccerblitz: 4:08pm On Feb 23, 2017
Arsenal has won 13 League titles, 12 FA Cups, two League Cups, 14 FA Community Shields, out of which Wenger won 3 league titles, 6 FA Cups, 6 Community Shields.

So, you should know I am on track if I say he is their most successful manager, I can also say he is the perfect manager for the club, you will come to understand why as this article progress.

Most of Arsene Wenger successful years was from 1997-2005, do you know why?

Historically, the club has been owned by descendants of the Bracewell-Smith and Hill-Wood families, but since 2007 the largest shareholder on the Arsenal board is American sports tycoon Stan Kroenke.

Kroenke first launched a bid for the club in April 2007, and faced competition for shares from Red and White Securities, which acquired its first shares off David Dein in August 2007.

Red & White Securities was co-owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov and Iranian London-based financier Farhad Moshiri, though Usmanov bought Moshiri’s stake in 2016.

Kroenke came close to the 30% takeover threshold in November 2009, when he increased his holding to 18,594 shares (29.9%).

In April 2011, Kroenke achieved a full takeover by purchasing the shareholdings of Nina Bracewell-Smith and Danny Fiszman, taking his shareholding to 62.89%.

As of June 2015, Kroenke owns 41,698 shares (67.02%) and Red & White Securities own 18,695 shares (30.04%).

Sports / 5 Things You Never Knew About New Barcelona Signing Ezekiel Bassey by soccerblitz: 6:34pm On Feb 01, 2017
On deadline day, Nigerians were blindsided by news that Enyimba winger Ezekiel Bassey had signed with Spanish giants Barcelona on an initial six-month loan, with an option for a two-year contract after.

Here are five things you need to know about the transfer and the player himself.

1. Spotted on NPFL’s tour of spain

Bassey was spotted by Barcelona while on a tour of Spain with the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) All-Star team last August.

The tour was part of a bilateral agreement signed between the NPFL and La Liga last year which includes technical partnerships between the league’s and their member clubs.

Officials tracked him after that, and also analysed videos of his previous games provided by former Nigeria international Haruna Babangida, who spent seven years with the club between 1997 and 2004.

A final decision to sign him was made on Thursday, and the deal was agreed and completed within 48 hours and the player flew out on Monday night after securing a special, emergency visa.
Gbenga Okunowo
Gbenga Okunowo is one of three Nigerian players to have plied his trade at the Nou Camp.

2. Fourth Nigerian to don Barca colours

Bassey becomes the fourth Nigerian to play for Barcelona, joining a very short list headed by Emmanuel Amunike, Gbenga Okunowo and Babangida.

He also becomes only the second Nigerian, after Okunowo in 1995, to join the Catalans direct from the Nigerian domestic league.

The 20-year-old will hope to make a bigger impact than Okunowo, who took a full year to break into the first team from the B side, and only managed to make 21 appearances before he was farmed out on loan and eventually traded.

3. Bassey plays like Bayern Munich’s Costa

A very talented winger, whose ball game has been likened to Bayern Munich’s Douglas Costa, Bassey combines intelligence with skill and balance.

Enyimba chairman Felix Anyansi Agwu, who signed him for the club, says Barcelona have picked up a real bargain.

“He is a fantastic player and his running, especially off the ball, is second to none,” Agwu said. “Barcelona will not regret getting him.”

“He called and asked me about the club and I told him he should come because he would get opportunities to play, just like me. That’s what convinced him to join Enyimba,” Udoh added.
Ezekiel Bassey
Bassey, far left, played a key role in helping Enyimba to the Nigerian league title.

4. Bassey’s injury jinx behind him

After playing a significant part in helping Enyimba to their record seventh title, Bassey was selected by Sunday Oliseh as a member of the Nigeria squad to the African Nations Championship, CAFs tournament for players who play in their domestic leagues.

But injury and a loss of form meant that Oliseh preferred to play Prince Aggreh and Osas Okoro in the wide areas, and even when he was thrown on as a substitute, Bassey failed to light up the competition as Nigeria made an early exit.

His woes continued when he returned to Enyimba with the coach Paul Aigbogun restricting him to substitute appearances. But he recovered enough of his form to be picked for the NPFL All Star trip to Spain. The rest as they say is now history.

5. A man of good fashion

Off the field, teammate and close friend Mfon Udoh says Ezekiel is a scrooge, but one with one weakness for clothes.

“He can spend a fortune on a good outfit, but in everything else, he is very conservative in spending.” Udoh said.

Both players have been friends since they were in academies, with Bassey playing for Emma Ntuk Academy in his native Akwa Ibom State.

Udoh was already at Enyimba when Bassey was recruited, and encouraged his friend to join him

“He called and asked me about the club and I told him he should come because he would get opportunities to play, just like me. That’s what convinced him to join Enyimba,” Udoh added.

Sports / 6 Players You Never Knew Played For Real Madrid And Barcelona by soccerblitz: 1:06pm On Jan 26, 2017
History between Barcelona and Real Madrid will always be surrounded by controversy. One of these topics lands on the players that switched sides and played for both teams.

Legends even tell that one of these transfers fueled the rivalry up to the point we know nowadays. Can you recall all the players that had their time calling both Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabeu Stadiums “home”?

soccerblitz.net will be naming six players that have turned out for both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Luis Figo

Perhaps one of the most controversial transfers ever, the Portuguese superstar and current FIFA presidential candidate became one of Barcelona’s favorite sons since his arrival in 1995, even wearing the captain’s armband on occasion.

His performances against Real Madrid boosted him to a legendary status, but it all ended in the year 2000, when Florentino Perez promised to sign the Ballon D’Or winner if he was elected as Real Madrid’s president.

Figo was angry with Barcelona’s execs, since they did not offer a contract extension with enough money to support it, choosing to leave the Catalunyans and sign for Los Blancos.

Whenever Figo played at Camp Nou with Real Madrid, fans appeared to have a shooting contest, throwing all kinds of items to the pitch to hit Figo, including a pig’s head.

The Portuguese wingman won one UEFA Champions League with Los Blancos, something he could never accomplish with the Catalunyans.

Ronaldo Luiz Nazario de Lima

The Brazilian striker arrived to Cataluña in 1996, and dazzled defenders and fans with his quickness and goalscoring ability. Ronaldo played only one year with Los Blaugranas after a dispute over his contract with Josep Lluis Nuñez, the team’s president back then.

After coming down with serious injuries that put his playing days in jeopardy, El Fenomeno signed with Los Blancos following the 2002 World Cup, and managed to rack up 104 goals in 177 appearances. He left the club during his fifth year, following continuous arguments with coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, and with Ronaldo battling with a glandular disease which caused him to gain weight considerably.

Samuel Eto’o

Joining Real Madrid’s youth teams at the age of 15, Eto’o played one game for Real Madrid before being loaned to Real Mallorca.

There, Eto’o made a habit out of exposing Real Madrid’s defense every time he played against them, forcing fans and media to request his return.

Eto’o chose not to play for Los Blancos after being snubbed for years, and signed with Barcelona in 2004. Eto’o became one of the most beloved players for the team’s fans, who knew where he came from but took him in as one of their own.

Eto’o was heavily criticized after mocking Real Madrid during Barca’s celebrations of their La Liga title in 2005, but remained playing with Los culés until 2009..

The 2009 FIFA U17 World Cup was Hosted in Nigeria and it is a tournament I will never forget in my life, it is not because it is the only FIFA hosted tournament i got to see with my eyes but because of the unforgettable event that happened.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Guardiola OUT Of Uefa’s Top 10 Coaches by soccerblitz: 1:09pm On Jan 14, 2017
UEFA has published its list of the top 10 coaches in the history of football, including Jose Mourinho but leaving out Pep Guardiola.

The Manchester United manager finds himself on the illustrious shortlist after his success in charge of Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid.

The self-dubbed ‘Special One’ led the former to an unlikely Champions League triumph in 2004, before winning a trio of Premier League titles at the Blues across two seperate spells.

Mourinho lifted his second Champions League trophy in charge of Inter, before clinching a La Liga title at Madrid.

However, ex-Barcelona coach Guardiola has not been included despite his success at Camp Nou.
