5. Kingsley Michael (Bologna)

Kingsley Michael is one of the Nigeria U17 squad that won the tournament in Chile.

the 17 year old has signed a pre-contract with the Italian Serie A club and will sign a professional deal when he is 18 on August 26, 2017.

4. Chidozie Awaziem (FC Porto)

Chidozie Awaziem is the only defender to appear on the list and one just as well-known for his rapid rise to stardom as his performances for FC Porto this season has been superb.

Spotted from El-Kanemi Warriors last season, Portuguese giants Porto took a punt on bringing the defender to Europe.

Now a regular starter at the Stadio Dragao, the 19-year-old has much room for improvement but has incredible potential and the physicality to have a strong career. He has made nine appearances this season, scoring once in Porto’s 2-0 win over Gil Vicente in the Taça da Liga competition.

Sports / Nigeria 2009 Fifa U17 World Cup Squad: Where Are They Now? by soccerblitz: 2:12pm On Jan 07, 2017
Dami Paul – Goalkeeper

The agile Paul was top choice when Nigeria hosted the 2009 U17 World Cup.

He will thereafter feature for the Flying Eagles as they won the 2011 African Youth Championship in South Africa, after that it seems things never really worked out for him except for now when he just joined newly promoted NPFL side Katsina United.

Let’s hope he re-ignites his once promising career.

Aigbe Oliha – Defender

Things didn’t really change for him as he still plays for his Tunisian club outfit ES Zarzis, he has been with them since 2011. Asides playing in the 2009 U17 World Cup, he also represented Nigeria at the 2013 African U-20 Championship, nothing was heard of him since then.

Mohammed Aliyu – Defender

After the World cup in 2009, Aliyu’s career looks bright after he signed for Villarreal in 2010, he spent a year without making any appearances then left in 2011 to join Ukranian side,Tavriya. making 4 appearances in his 3 years spell with the Ukranian Premier League side. He last played for Saxan in Moldova and also represented Nigeria at the 2011 African youth champinship.

Ogenyi Onazi – Midfielder

Very much one of the most successful out of the then U17 squad.

Onazi joined Lazio in 2011, alongside his teammate, Sani Emmanuel. The pair trialed in England, Greece and Italy following appearances at the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, in which Nigeria reached the final on home soil, losing to Switzerland.

Onazi was first promoted to the Lazio first team during the 2011–12 season after appearing at youth level. He made his Serie A debut as a substitute in the penultimate match of the season, replacing Senad Lulić in the 90th minute. Lazio recorded a 2–0 victory over Atalanta at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo.

He has been capped by Nigeria 28 times, scoring twice. He currently plays for Trabzonspor, featuring 10 times and scoring twice.

Fortune Chukwudi – Defender

Dubbed “captain fantastic”, he played a key role in the team’s road to the final, but things went bad for him after the tournament after evidence was released that he is actually 25 not 16 as he claimed. Nothing was heard of him since then until this year when he joined Ifeanyi Ubah.

Sports / Why Kelechi Iheanacho Has To Leave Manchester City And Guardiola by soccerblitz: 8:57am On Jan 04, 2017
I must say i have been thinking about the future of our Golden Boy Iheanacho and
how Guardiola failed to use him when Aguero was out injured.
Permit me to say am of the school of thought that thinks Guardiola doesn’t see
anything good in African players. History has told us how he treated Samuel Eto’o
who despite been Barcelona’s highest goal scorer in the Spainish la liga
2008/2009 season was included in the deal that brought Zlatan Ibrahimovic to
Spain the following season. (A slap on the face on the then three time African
Footballer of the Year). How Pep also preferred a Sergio Busquets to Yaya Toure
then raises questions as to why he is not a fan of black footballers.
When Kelechi decided to forfeit the Rio Olympic Eagles for Manchester City, I was
one of the people who supported his decision and hoped the 20-year old does
well enough to win Guardiola’s heart.
Its no news Iheanacho is the most prolific striker in the premier league with the
best goal to match ratio, the young lad has proven himself but i still do not think
Pep has faith in him by opting to sign Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus for
£27million.

Sports / DEATHS That Rocked Nigerian Football In 2016 by soccerblitz: 8:21pm On Dec 30, 2016
2016 like every year had its ups and downs, it was a successful year in Nigerian football irrespective of the fact we couldn’t qualify for the 2017 AFCON but we have hopes of a greater and a golden generation Super Eagles in years to come.

The Dream team six led by Samson Siasia won bronze at the rio olympics in August, and the Super Falcons of Nigeria won the African Women Cup of Nations for a record 8th time in Cameroon.

2016 also took away some of our great football icons, though they are dead, their legacies lives on because legends dont die.

1. STEPHEN OKECHUKWU KESHI

From Captain Fantastic to a Super Coach of our National team, very many believed we would not win the 2013 African Cup of Nations, prior to that we didn’t qualify for the 2012 AFCON.
Keshi with a relatively unknown home-based players in the Super Eagles at that time guided Nigeria to a 3rd African Cup of Nations trophy in South Africa.
He had a good time as Nigeria’s coach for four years guiding the Super Eagles to three major competitions, the AFCON in 2013, the FIFA confederations Cup that same year and the 2014 FIFA World Cup where the Super Eagles were eliminated in the round of 16.
He became the second coach to win the African Cup of Nations trophy as a player and a coach. Prior to coaching the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Keshi had successfully coach the Togolese and Malian senior teams. He qualified Togo for its only world Cup appearance in 2006.
Keshi captained Nigeria to a Nations Cup glory in 1994 under Clemen Westerof and was Nigeria’s first Captain to play in a World Cup game in 1994.
Stephen Okechukwu Keshi died in the early hours of Wednesday June 7 2016 in Benin, Edo State few months after his wife Kate passed on. He was reported to have died of Cardiac arrest.

2. SHUAIBU AMODU

Many never saw the death of Shuaibu Amodu coming, the ex-Super Eagles coach also gave up the ghost few days after the death of Stephen Keshi clouded the air.
It was exactly three days after the death of Keshi that the NFF posted on its offical twitter handle that another football legend has kicked the bucket.
The story of Amodu is a tale of one who qualified his home country for two of its four world cup appearances but was not allowed to coach them at the tournament.
Amodu was the architect behind Nigeria qualifying for the 2002 and 2010 world cups but was replaced prior to the tournaments.
Few says after his death, it was revealed in the media Amodu might have died over the frustration of being owed by the Edo state Government and the Nigerian football federation.
“I think he died out of frustration because his financial status was not okay. He was complaining of not being paid and he was having difficulties to maintain himself and his immediate family. I think the purpose of his being in Benin was to put up a bill for his payment. He is being owed by NFF and the Edo state government.” Amodu’s cousin said.

Shuaibu was later laid to rest in his home town Okpella according to Islamic rites. He was survived by his aged mother, a wife and eight children.

3. IZU JOSEPH
The 2016/2017 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League resumes on the 15th of January 2017, Shooting Stars of Ibadan hosts Nassarawa United and will be without their solid left-back Izu Joseph.

Death defeated the energetic defender shortly after the end of the 2015/2016 Nigeria Football League season in his home town Mahuda Local Government of Bayelsa State after he was shot by Nigerian Soldiers of the JTF who taught he was a militant in the area.
The father of the slain defender said the death of his was unfair as he showed the military men his ID Card before he was shot but they didn’t give him a suitable response. So many football pundits believed the death of the promising player could have been avoided.

4. DOUGLAS UZAMA

Uzama, who just turned 18 on the 5th of December met an untimely death on the 29th of December 2016.

Douglas Uzama represented Nigeria at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile and was also part of the NIGERIA U20 team.

The Gombe United player was shot dead by a suspected cultist just two days before the new year.
