PoliticsEl-rufai Accuses Ribadu Of Ordering His Arrest, Claims Nsa’s Phone Tapped by Sodiq3(op): 9:27pm On Feb 13
The former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, ordered his arrest and is behind the alleged attempt to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday.

Speaking on Friday in an interview with Arise Television, the former governor claimed that Mr Ribadu personally ordered his arrest.

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that Mr El-Rufai was involved in a heated verbal exchange with security operatives at the Abuja airport, shortly after his arrival in the country.

According to eyewitness accounts, security officials briefly restrained him and confiscated his international passport before he was escorted out of the airport amid chants from supporters who had gathered to receive him.

Claims NSA’s phone call intercepted

Mr El-Rufai alleged that the NSA’s phone conversation was intercepted, and that he heard the NSA directing security operatives to detain him.

“The NSA’s call was tapped. They do that to our calls too, and we heard him saying they should arrest me,” Mr El-Rufai claimed.

The former governor did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegation, and there has been no official response from Mr Ribadu as of the time of filing this report. However, the NSA has previously denied similar allegations.

On Friday, a presidential aide expressed concern about Mr El-Rufai’s latest claim.

“El-Rufai admitted on a national television that someone tapped the phone of the NSA for him to listen to his conversation. When Charles Aniagolu, the interviewer, interjected that that was an illegal action, El-Rufai agreed to the illegality. By the time he is picked up to produce the person who illegally tapped the NSA’s phone, he would say President Tinubu is a ‘tyrant’ and persecuting him,” Temitope Ajayi, the senior special assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, wrote on Facebook.

Allegations against Kaduna governor, ICPC chairman

Mr El-Rufai also alleged that Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, NSA Ribadu, and the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had conspired to abduct him.

“Let me tell you, Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, the NSA and the ICPC chairman have arranged that I get abducted unfailingly today,” he said during the interview.

These claims come amid rising political tension between Mr El-Rufai and some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), following his consistent public criticism of the Bola Tinubu administration.

Dadiyata’s disappearance

During the interview, Mr El-Rufai was also asked about the disappearance of Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata, a social media commentator who was abducted from his Kaduna residence in 2019 and has not been seen since.

The former governor denied any involvement in the incident and rejected suggestions that his administration played a role in the activist’s disappearance.

According to him, Dadiyata was primarily a critic of political actors in Kano State rather than Kaduna.

“Dadiyata lives in Kaduna; he was not a critic of Kaduna State. We barely knew he resided in Kaduna until his abduction was reported. He was a critic of the Kano government at the time,” he said, suggesting that questions should instead be directed at political figures in Kano.

The case of Dadiyata remains unresolved despite repeated calls from civil society groups for a thorough investigation.

Kwankwaso and US legislative move

Mr El-Rufai also reacted to a bill proposed by some United States lawmakers, demanding sanctions against former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso over alleged links to terrorism in Nigeria.

He described the development as politically motivated, dismissing claims that Mr Kwankwaso was associated with terrorism.

Mr El-Rufai argued that if scrutiny was to be applied to political actors over the introduction of Sharia law in northern Nigeria, attention should instead focus on Zamfara State, where it was first implemented under then-governor Ahmad Yerima.

He also referenced subsequent administrations in Zamfara, suggesting that controversies surrounding the application of Sharia occurred there rather than in Kano under Mr Kwankwaso.

Readiness to appear before EFCC

Despite alleging political persecution, Mr El-Rufai maintained that he is willing to honour lawful invitations from security and anti-corruption agencies.

He confirmed that he would appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday in response to an invitation for questioning.

“I have nothing to hide,” he said, denying any wrongdoing during his eight-year tenure as governor of Kaduna State.

Both the EFCC and ICPC are investigating corruption allegations against Mr El-Rufai.

The former Kaduna governor was a prominent member of the APC and strongly supported the election of President Bola Tinubu. He, however, fell out with the party after the Senate rejected his nomination as minister and his successor as Kaduna governor started probing his administration.

PoliticsMuslims Will Not Recognise Any Election Conducted By Amupitan- Sharia Council by Sodiq3(op): 10:05am On Jan 29
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has renewed its call for the immediate removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that his continued stay in office poses a serious threat to the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process.

The Council said muslims across the country would not recognise or legitimise any election conducted under the leadership of an INEC chairman whose integrity is under such a cloud.

President of the Council, Sheikh Bashir Umar, made the call on Wednesday during the Council’s 2026 Annual Pre-Ramadan Lecture and General Assembly in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme “Nigeria’s Future: Faith, Justice, and Leadership,” Umar said the Council’s demand was anchored on what he said is the INEC chairman’s questionable antecedents, particularly a legal brief he authored which alleged the existence of a Christian genocide in Nigeria.

He said the Federal Government has repeatedly dismissed the claim.

“This is not the first time the Council is taking this position. In the legal brief he personally sent, he sought to establish the existence of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, a position that is in direct conflict with the official stance of the Federal Government, which has categorically stated that no such genocide exists", the cleric said.

Umar said the position taken by the INEC chairman at that time amounted to divisive propaganda and raised serious concerns about his neutrality as the head of Nigeria’s electoral umpire.

“For an umpire in a democratic process, you must have someone whose integrity is not compromised and who is clearly unbiased. As far as we are concerned, his integrity has been compromised. The honourable thing for him to do is to resign. If he does not, the government should dismiss or retire him.

He clarified that while the Council itself is an advocacy body and not directly involved in litigation, it is aware that other groups have approached courts of competent jurisdiction to challenge the chairman’s appointment and continued stay in office.

"The Council must remain resolute in this demand and has clearly stated that the Ummah will not recognise or legitimise any election presided over by a character with questionable integrity, as democratic credibility must never be compromised", he added.

The council used the forum to express concerns over worsening insecurity, economic hardship, poor budget implementation, alleged imbalance in federal appointments, and attempts to undermine Muslims’ constitutional right to practise Shari’ah in Muslim-majority states.

It also rejected narratives of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, adding that such claims fuel division and threaten national cohesion.

Also speaking, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Ecological funds and member representing Kaura-Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, Aminu Sani Jaji, said the timing of the Pre-Ramadan lecture was critical given the country’s security and socio-political challenges.

Jaji said Ramadan remained a period of deep spiritual reflection for Muslims, adding that guidance from religious scholars was essential at a time when Nigeria was facing insecurity and heightened religious and political tensions.

He warned that unverified claims and divisive narratives, including allegations of religious persecution, could worsen national cohesion if not responsibly addressed.

Referring to Nigeria’s designation by the United States as a country of particular concern, Jaji described claims of a “Christian genocide” as misleading, stressing that Nigeria remained a secular state.

On his part, the Madakin Zazzau, Mal. Muhammadu Munir Ja’afaru, said since its establishment of the council, it has served as a credible, principled, and courageous voice of the Nigerian Muslim Ummah.

“It has consistently demonstrated concern not only for religious matters but also for the broader wellbeing, unity, and development of our nation.

"The Council has distinguished itself through strategic engagements, providing guidance rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah, defending constitutional rights, promoting peaceful coexistence, advocating justice, and constructively engaging government and society on critical national issues", he said.

PoliticsTinubu allocates ₦1.01 trillion to INEC in 2026 Appropriation Bill by Sodiq3(op): 5:27pm On Jan 09
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been allocated a staggering N1,013,778,401,602 in the 2026 budget presented to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The allocation, one of the largest in the commission’s history, comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

This is contained in the details of the 2026 Appropriation Bill released by the Budget Office of the Federation.

President Tinubu had presented a 2026 Appropriation Bill of N58.18 trillion to the National Assembly.

The proposed budget, tagged, “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” projected total revenue of N34.33 trillion and total expenditure of N58.18 trillion, including N15.52 trillion for debt service.

While INEC has consistently cited the need for adequate funding to ensure credible elections, observers noted that the new allocation will be tested by logistical demands, including procurement of technology, voter education, and nationwide staff deployment.

Section 3(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 requires election funds to be released at least one year before the polls.

"The election funds due to the Commission for any general elections are to be released to the Commission not later than one year before the next general election", the section said.

In 2025, the National Assembly approved an upward review of the budget for INEC, increasing it to N140 billion from N40 billion initially proposed by the Federal Government.

The commission spent N313.4 billion for the conduct of the 2023 general elections.

But the commission in its 2023 General Election Report, said that out of the N355 billion approved for the conduct of the elections, the sum of N313.4 billion was only released as of September 2023.

For the 2019 election, the National Assembly approved N143 billion for the commission.

Furthermore, checks revealed that Nigeria spent about N108.8 billion to conduct the 2015 general elections.

The Guardian reports that Professor Bolade Eyinla, immediate past Chief Technical Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu had in October projected that the commission may spend about N870 billion ($600 million) to conduct the 2027 general election.

Speaking at a Yiaga Africa 2027 Elections Scenarios and Election Manipulation Risk Index (EMRI) Retreat in Abuja, Eyinla noted that Nigeria’s elections are among the largest civil operations in peacetime, requiring significant financial, technological, and logistical resources.

According to him, the projected costs reflect the demands of a country with over 93 million registered voters, 176,846 polling units, and 1,558 electoral constituencies.

Eyinla said the projected amount is informed by previous election costs, saying that the 2015 elections cost N109 billion (US$662 million), 2019 elections N189 billion (US$619 million) and N355 billion (US$628 million) was spent on the 2023 elections.

According to him, after accounting for inflation, currency fluctuations, and operational expansion, the N870 billion projection for 2027 is realistic.

He added that on a per-voter basis, the cost is approximately US$6.72 per voter, which is within international norms for transitional democracies.

His words: "In comparative terms, the cost of conducting a general election in Nigeria is among the lowest in Africa. For instance, in Kenya, the cost per voter was US$25.9 in 2017 and US$14.9 in 2022; in Ghana, US$13.1 in 2016 and US$7.7 in 2020; in South Africa, US$5.1 in 2019 and US$7.1 in 2024; in the Democratic Republic of Congo, US$22 and US$14.37 per voter in 2023; and in Liberia, US$22 per voter in 2023. This comparison is no less striking with India, the world’s largest democracy, where the cost was US$8.5 per voter in 2019.

"Based on the prevailing US$ to Naira exchange rate at the time of each election, the cost of Nigeria’s previous three general elections was: N109 billion (US$662 million) in 2015, N189 billion (US$619 million) in 2019, and N355 billion (US$628 million) in 2023.

"Considering the current state of the economy, inflation, and the consumer price index from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), it is estimated that conducting the 2027 general election will require about US$600 million (approximately N870 billion), assuming INEC manages its resources prudently.

PoliticsBoko Haram Members Found In Army Recruitment List - Ahmed Idris Wase by Sodiq3(op): 1:51pm On Nov 26, 2025
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Idris Wase, on Wednesday alleged that names of Boko Haram members were once discovered on the Nigerian Army recruitment list, warning that such infiltration is undermining the country’s security architecture.

Speaking during a special plenary session of the House convened to review the national security situation, Wase said former Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Muktar Betara, could confirm the incident.

He said the development reflects the deep flaws in Nigeria’s recruitment processes, which have allowed individuals with criminal backgrounds to enter sensitive security institutions.

Wase, who revealed that he lost both a brother and a cousin to terrorists, said the infiltration of the system helps explain why criminal groups continue to operate freely in many parts of the country.

He added that insecurity has become so overwhelming that his surviving younger brother begged him to help secure a transfer out of their community.

He said: "My brother, former chairman of defense, and my very good friend, Betara, will bear with me that we have moments in when in the process of recruitment, we found in the list names of criminals. Boko Haram members were found in the list of Army.

"There has to be a thorough way of ensuring that when we are recruiting, those of us who are politicians should recommend people of good character and integrity. That's the only way we can solve this problem. You find a criminal in the system, and before you know it, whatever you do, you cannot have the problem resolved. So we must change the system and way of our recruitment.

Yes, as politicians, it's good to recommend. This is what we are here for. But when you are recommending, please recommend people of integrity, people that will meet standards and ensure that they give the best access to our country."

The former deputy speaker warned that Nigeria’s security crisis persists partly because some individuals benefit from the chaos, enabling criminals to move in convoys and operate with impunity.

Wase further lamented the politicisation of indigeneship and citizenship, describing it as one of the key issues dividing the country and calling for constitutional reforms to address the problem.

He noted that kidnapping has become routine, with about N5 billion reportedly paid as ransom in one year, while more than 30,000 people have been killed in Boko Haram-related attacks over time.

Wase urged lawmakers to take a holistic approach to the crisis, stressing that the scale of insecurity facing the country is more dangerous than many realise and requires urgent, coordinated action.

PoliticsI Won’t Negotiate Election Integrity, My Coming To INEC Is Divine – Amupitan by Sodiq3(op): 4:50pm On Oct 23, 2025
The newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, Thursday formally assumed office at the headqiarters of the commission in Abuja, describing his appointment as a divine call to service.

Amupitan, who was sworn in earlier by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, took over from May Agbamuche-Mbu, who had been serving as Acting Chairman of the Commission since the exit of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

Speaking during an interactive meeting with INEC directors at shortly after taking over, Amupitan expressed gratitude to God for a "divine assignment,” and vowed to uphold integrity, transparency, and discipline in the management of Nigeria’s electoral process.

“I am here for a purpose. Maybe if I had a choice, I would have said I would not come here. But from all indications, I can see that God is moving this country, and my coming is divine. With God saying go, who am I to say no? I am here because I have a role to play to ensure that a new Nigeria is birthed,” he said.

Amupitan, who was accompanied by his wife, children, vice chancellor of the University of Jos, Tanko Ishaya and other top officials from the institution, where he previously served, assured the Commission’s staff that his leadership would prioritise their welfare and professional development.

The new INEC Chairman said teamwork, accountability, and commitment to credible elections was important, noting that the success of the Commission depends on synergy among its departments and staff.

He stressed the need of restoring public confidence in the electoral process, adding that Nigerians must trust that their votes will count.

He said: "Our mandate is very clear. That is to deliver free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the people. The integrity of our elections is not negotiable. Every voter must feel confident that their vote counts.

“For me, staff welfare is going to be a priority. We will expect a lot from you, and because of that, you also deserve to be well equipped and supported to deliver. We will work assiduously to ensure that your working conditions are conducive and that you have the necessary resources to excel,” he stated.

Amupitan who also acknowledged the task ahead, particularly the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, stated that the exercise would serve as a test of INEC’s resolve to uphold credibility and transparency.

"Together, let us uphold the values of democracy and work tirelessly for the credibility of our elections. The facts may be challenging, but if we stand united, there is nothing we cannot achieve.

“The eyes of the nation are upon us. We must rise to the occasion and demonstrate that we are capable of conducting elections that meet the expectations of Nigerians.

"I want to thank you for your commitment, your service, and I look forward to working closely with all of you as we embark on this very, very important mission.

He commended Agbamuche-Mbu for her stewardship in the interim period and thanked INEC staff for their dedication to duty.

Amupitan urged the staff to work in unity, break silos, and commit to strengthening democratic values through credible elections.

PoliticsBuhari Govt Practiced Voodoo Economics, Printed N22.7 Trillion - Dogara by Sodiq3(op):
N22.7tn printed under Buhari, 'voodoo' economic policies crashed Naira - Dogara

By Sodiq Omolaoye, Abuja

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has attributed the decline of the value of naira to economic policies of the previous administration, which he said saw N22.7 trillion printed and injected into the economy.

Dogara also described the foreign loan and crude oil–tied measures that sustained it as nothing short of voodoo economics.

Noting that the policy under late President Muhammadu Buhari undermined the currency’s value, Dogara argued that the massive liquidity injection, coupled with dual exchange rates and unproductive forex allocations, left the nation’s economy teetering on the brink of collapse by the time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office.

Dogara stated this on Tuesday while delivering the maiden distinguished parliamentarian lecture organised by the House of Representatives Press Corps at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

His lecture, titled “Navigating Tax Reform in Nigeria: Insights on President Tinubu’s Policies”, examined the origins, scope, and expected impact of the tax reforms encapsulated in the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025 and related legislation.

The former Speaker, who now chairs the board of National Credit Guarantee Company, said President Tinubu inherited a troubled economy riddled with economic debris, including excessive deficit financing through Ways and Means, dual exchange rates that enriched a few at the expense of many.

"By the time President Tinubu took office, the economic debris of the nation had become too conspicuous to be ignored, N22.7 trillion had been printed and injected into the economy in the name of ways and means thereby destroying the value of the Naira in our pockets.

"Also the dual exchange rate meant that some anointed people were making hundreds of millions of Naira off forex allocations from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) without producing any goods or offering any services whatsoever and tying our crude sales to foreign loans in the name of forward sales of crude was fast becoming the order of the day. Some of the foreign loans had been procured in order to help strengthen the Naira, a measure that could only be sustained by voodoo economics", he stated.

He commended the current government for implementing urgent reforms to avert economic collapse, particularly the 2025 tax reform package.

The reforms, he said, consolidate 16 federal tax laws into four principal Acts, expand the tax base to include digital services, virtual currencies, and FX gains, and introduce minimum tax rates for large companies.

Dogara stressed that the reforms aim to protect vulnerable Nigerians, encourage investment, enhance competitiveness, and provide the government with resources for infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security.

Addressing concerns over the five per cent fuel surcharge, Dogara clarified that it is not a new tax, adding that it will exempt household energy products like kerosene and LPG, and will only take effect under ministerial approval published in the official gazette.

Despite applauding the boldness of the reforms, Dogara noted the challenges around uncertainty in interpretation, technological readiness, skilled manpower, and short-term compliance costs.

He said businesses must invest in systems and training to adapt, adding that successful tax reform requires public trust.

He urged the government to ensure revenues raised are transparently deployed to build roads, power industries, and improve hospitals and schools.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, said Tinubu’s tax reforms was a decisive step toward simplifying compliance, broadening the tax net, and easing the burden on ordinary Nigerians.

Abbas who was represented by the House Spokesperson and Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi said the establishment of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms and the harmonisation of tax collection processes set to take effect in January 2026, represent a significant intervention that promises to re-engineer the nation's tax administration architecture for greater efficiency, fairness, and transparency.

PoliticsCVR: S'west Leads 1.3m Voter Pre-registration As S'east Records Lowest by Sodiq3(op): 8:20pm On Aug 25, 2025
The South West has recorded the highest figures in the first week of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) online voter pre-registration exercise, accounting for more than 61 per cent of the 1,379,342 applications received between August 18 and 24, 2025.

This was revealed as the commission commenced the physical registration stage on Monday, August 25, 2025.

According to figures released by the commission on Monday, Osun State recorded the highest number of pre-registrations with 393,269, followed by Lagos (222,205) and Ogun (132,823).

Oyo recorded 66,951, while Ekiti registered 29,685 and Ondo had 3,426. Collectively, the South West accounted for 848,359 pre-registrations.

The South South came a distant second with 169,377 applications, while the South East recorded 64,696, the lowest among the six geo-political zones.

The document revealed that South East’s tally was heavily skewed by Anambra’s 62,698 registrations, while other states in the region; Abia (772), Ebonyi (261), Enugu (484) and Imo (481) recorded extremely low numbers.

These figures are among the lowest nationwide, in contrast with the massive turnout in Osun, Lagos, and Ogun.

In the North, the North Central zone, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led with 243,768 pre-registrations, driven largely by the FCT’s 107,682 and Kogi’s 58,546.

The North West recorded 145,490, while the North East emerged as the least-performing zone in the region with 77,652 pre-registrations, representing just 5.6 per cent of the national total.

The data indicated that southern Nigeria accounted for 66.2 per cent (912,432) of the registrations, while the North recorded 33.8 per cent (466,910).

The demographic breakdown shows that youths aged 18–34 years made up the majority with 62.37 per cent (860,286) of pre-registrants.

Middle-aged voters (35–49 years) followed with 24.76 per cent, while elderly (50–69 years) accounted for 11.41 per cent, and those aged 70 and above represented only 1.46 per cent.

Gender distribution revealed that women slightly outnumbered men at 52.04 per cent (717,856) compared to 47.96 per cent (661,486).

Students were the single largest occupational group with 27.15 per cent (374,534), followed by business persons at 24.82 per cent (342,363) and traders at 11.68 per cent (161,137).

Artisans accounted for 10.12 per cent, while farmers and fishers represented 9.23 per cent. Civil servants and public servants collectively made up less than five per cent.

The current figures however reflected online and initial registrations only as applicants are required to complete their registration at designated INEC physical registration centres before they can be added to the official voter register.

INEC said the physical CVR is taking place at 811 centres across the country, including all 774 Local Government Area offices and State offices, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday.

PoliticsTinubu Did Nothing For Southeast, Can’t Secure 25% Vote - Igbo Elders by Sodiq3(op): 6:19am On Jun 11, 2025
The Igbo Elders Consultative Forum has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration has failed to deliver any tangible development to the Southeast.

The elders warned that, given the current state of affairs, the All Progressives Congress (APC) may struggle to secure even 25 per cent of the votes in the Southeast come 2027.

Secretary General of the forum, Prof. Charles Nwekeaku, made the declaration in an exclusive interview with The Guardian on Monday.

He said the current APC administration has neglected the region's infrastructural and economic needs.

The don was responding to the argument by some Southeast politicians that President Tinubu has done enough for the region to deserve re-election.

For instance, during the 2025 Sallah celebration with the Ebonyi Muslim community in Abakaliki, capital of the state, Minister of Works David Umahi hailed the impact of President Tinubu in the Southeast and the entire country in general

Umahi credited Tinubu with reversing years of federal neglect in the Southeast.

"Before now, many Southeast states had no federal projects. But today, the federal presence is visible across the region. That is true national integration,” Umahi said.

But Nwekeaku dismissed such claims as dishonest and unrepresentative of the people’s sentiment.

The don insisted that in 2027, the Southeast will vote for merit, accountability, and good governance and not party loyalty.

He said: These politicians saying all that represent themselves. They are selfish. They don't represent the people. Now, I ask you, go to southeast. I just came back yesterday. I missed my flight.

"I came back by road. Every 100 meters, police checkpoint or military checkpoint.
Not one kilometer now. I'm saying 100 meters in the southeast. And the road is terrible.

"The road that would take one hour would take you four hours in the southeast. So, tell me the one that the government has reconstructed. Tell me any major project they have done.

"Is it the gas project they are doing? They marginalised the southeast. Nothing in the southeast. Is it the railway? Tell me, what are they doing that warrants these governors to say that the president is doing well? Instead of telling Mr. President the truth

"The igbos will vote for merit, accountability and good governance. If things continue like this I don't think the APC will get 25 per cent in South east come 2027. We are going to retire most of these politicians.

Nwekeaku also criticised politicians defecting to the ruling APC, saying their actions was self-serving and devoid of any genuine interest in the people they claim to represent.

He further criticised the worsening economic conditions under the APC-led government.

The don added: "Why are politicians defecting? Already two or three governors from PDP have defected to APC. Why are they defecting? Were they elected under APC? What are their reasons? Because they failed to put their house in order. And because a number of them have soiled their hands.

"That's why they are trying to escape any form of investigation and that's why they are defecting. It's not that they have any major plans for the people.

"Why are they defecting to APC? I want to ask you. What has the federal government done? What is the exchange rate of the Naira now? About 1,500 and something. If you go to the parallel market, N1,600, N1,000, almost N1,700. That is the exchange rate.

"This has made the Nigerian laborer the cheapest in the world. Whether you are a professor in Nigeria, a graduate assistant abroad, earns by far more than myself and any other professor. They tell you that the governors have more money now.

"The federal government said that they have increased the minimum wage to N70,000. Now, when the minimum wage was N30,000, N8,000 or N7,500 could buy you a bag of rice. Is that not true? Today, what they say they have increased, it cannot buy a bag of rice for you."

I suspect that the fear of a backlash caused the Zamfara State government to panic and stage a huge cover up.

I blame the saharareporters journalist for not scanning copies of court documents relating to the case and uploading them on social media. That would have made it harder for them to lie about the case as they are doing now.
No serious journalist will write such report without having a scanned copies of the said case. If you follow Saharareporters well, you will know that if there was such evidence, it will be an accompanying picture with the story. It is more than three days the Zamfara government denied the report, yet Saharareporters is yet to come back with evidence. Instead, they stylishly deleted the report without any corrigendum or apology. That story alone can set the state or the country on fire. Yet nobody has been held responsible. We need press freedom but that also comes with responsibility on the press. Social responsibility is good when it comes to media freedom.
PoliticsBill To Jail Eligible Nigerians Who Fail To Vote Scales Second Reading At Reps by Sodiq3(op): 5:19pm On May 15, 2025
A bill seeking to make voting compulsory for Nigerians of voting age on Thursday scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

Titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Electoral Act 2022 to Make It Mandatory for All Nigerians of Majority Age to Vote in All National and State Elections and for Related Matters,” the proposed legislation seeks to introduce compulsory voting for eligible Nigerians.

The bill which was first introduced by Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen in February proposes imposing a maximum of six months imprisonment or a fine of no more than N100,000 for Nigerians of voting age who fail to vote during elections.

Presenting the bill during Thursday's plenary session, co-sponsor of the bill and member representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, Daniel Asama, argued that compulsory voting would deepen democracy, strengthen civic engagement, and reduce voter apathy.

According to him, democracy thrives when citizens are actively engaged in the process of selecting their leaders and shaping the direction of governance.

He lamented Nigeria’s persistently low voter turnout, stating that it undermines electoral legitimacy and weakens democratic institutions.

"Voting is not only the right, but a civic responsibility. For global precedents, several democracies including Australia, Belgium and Brazil, for instance, have adopted mandatory voting for the positive outcomes in terms of political participation and public accountability. For electoral apathy and voter inducement, mandatory voting can significantly reduce the influence of vote buying as more citizens vote", the lawmaker argued.

In his contribution, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu supported the bill, saying it a good proposition and a step towards entrenching civic responsibility.

According to him, Nigerians are quick to condemn administrations, but slow to fulfil their civic obligations.

Kalu said: "In other climes that we have travelled to or lived, personally in Australia, it is actually an offence for you not to vote during elections. So it is a good proposition coming out from you and the person that partnered with you to sponsor this bill".

But the member representing Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency, Awaji-Inombek Abiante questioned the bill’s practicality and enforceability.

According to him, “It is not just enough to legislate compulsory voting. How will it be enforced?

"There are people who register in this country and they are in Ghana, they are in the US, they are in Australia, they are in London. Who will provide the logistics for them to come? If you say it is compulsory, probably you will deny them a renewal of their passports. So how will they get to my village for instance", Abiante queried.

He warned against imposing penalties in a system still suffering with infrastructural deficits and questioned whether it would be fair to punish citizens who are unable to access polling units due to systemic challenges.

But Kalu, raising a point of order, cautioned
Abiante against irrelevant submissions, stressing that members must confine their arguments to the principle of the bill, not its implementation challenges.

"What we are discussing is whether or not it should be mandatory for citizens to participate in elections. When it is time for debate on the budget or economic policies of the country, we can go into all that. What we are talking regards to our electoral laws.

"It is good for Nigeria to show patriotism, that spirit of nationalism, participating in what is going on in your country, not just criticizing", the deputy speaker stated.

Abbas however clarified that there is no law without exemption, assuring that there could be exemption in certain cases.

Another lawmaker, Esset Udo representing Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Asutan/Ibesikpo Federal Constituency supported the spirit of the bill but expressed skepticism about citizens’ confidence in the electoral process.

He said: "It is a good and wonderful bill. Mandating citizens to vote is not the problem but a situation where citizens have lost confidence in the system. We should also make a law that will make vote count. The last election, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and his officials gave all sorts of promises but we saw all what happened.

But Kalu shut him againt.

Again, Kalu shut down the comment, saying it as against the rules of the House.

Speaker Abbas, however, acknowledged Udo’s concerns and suggested that compulsory voting could actually help restore public confidence in leadership and governance.

Also speaking, member representing Albasu/Gaya/Ajingi Federal Constituency, Dr. Ghali Mustapha Tijjani described the bill as one of the best and most unique introduced this year.

After an exhaustive debate, the Speaker put the question to a voice vote. Though a section of the chamber shouted “nay” more loudly, Abbas ruled in favour of the “ayes.”

The bill was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Electoral Matters for further legislative action.

We should cut this man some slack. He should continue his good works in JAMB. I like when people admit to mistakes and take full responsibility for their actions. It is left for him and the President to decide on the next step. If he resigns, fine. If the president decides to sack him, still fine. And if the president believes the work he has done in JAMB outweigh the present mistakes and decides to leave him, still fine. But at least, there is some form of accountability and transparency from his end.
PoliticsReps Postpone Special Session On Tinubu’s Tax Bills Indefinitely by Sodiq3(op): 8:06pm On Nov 30, 2024
The House of Representatives has postponed the scheduled special Session on Tax Reform Bills slated for Tuesday, December 3, 2024 indefinitely.

The lower chamber said the decision is to allow for wider consultations on the proposed legislations.

This is contained in an internal memo sent to members of the House, signed by the House Clerk, Dr Yahaya Danzaria on Saturday.

Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu had after a long closed-door session on Thursday announced that the lower chamber would
special session on Tuesday to deliberate on the tax bills.

The House held a long closed-door session on Thursday that lasted over one hour before resuming plenary session.

"We will have a special session over the tax bill on Tuesday. This conversation is going to continue from now till Tuesday when we will invite these resource persons to be here to engage us. Thereafter we will decide which way to go,” Kalu said.

The four tax bills; Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, are currently before the two chambers of the National Assembly.

However, the bills have met stiff opposition from the 36 state governors and northern stakeholders who called for their withdrawal to allow room for more consultation.

The memo by the House clerk reads, “I am directed by the House Leadership to inform all Honourable Members that the Special Session, initially scheduled for Tuesday, 3rd December, 2024, to discuss all the Tax Reform Bills, has been postponed to a later date.

“This rescheduling is due to the need for further and broader consultations with all relevant stakeholders.

“A new date and venue for the session will be communicated in due course. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding”.

PoliticsAll Nigerian Presidents Were Unprepared, Except Tinubu, Says Kukah by Sodiq3(op): 7:23am On Nov 25, 2024
Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto Matthew Kukah has said that Nigeria’s presidents since independence, except President Bola Tinubu, assumed office by accident. Nevertheless, he lamented that the country still suffers despite Tinubu’s preparedness to govern.

Given the bishop’s history of sharp critiques of Nigerian governments, his nuanced stance on the Tinubu administration—acknowledging its preparedness while lamenting the nation’s struggles—may perplex many Nigerians who view past administrations more favourably amid current economic challenges.

Kukah spoke while delivering his keynote address at the 4th Amaka Ndoma-Egba Memorial Lecture, which was held in Abuja yesterday on the theme “Leaders of Tomorrow: Creating Lasting Change In A Complex World.”

The deceased, who was wife to the former Senate Leader Ndoma Egba, died in an auto crash in Ondo State in 2020. The event, held at Start-Rite Schools, Abuja, saw Cross River Governor Bassey Otu commission a legacy building in honour of the deceased.

Kukah lamented that Nigeria’s leadership crisis was caused by its leaders’ lack of knowledge, capacity, and preparedness.Tracing the history of Nigeria’s leadership, the cleric observed that none of the country’s past leaders, including former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari, Goodluck Jonathan, Umaru Yar’adua, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Shonekan, and Sani Abacha, among others, came to power prepared.

He said, “I don’t want to bore you, but run through, from the beginning, you’ll find that almost everybody who came to power in Nigeria was the result of one accident or the other. President Tinubu, well, he prepared for it. However, we’re still trying to get off the ground. But he took over from Buhari, who had already given up.

“Buhari took over from Jonathan, who was thinking that after finishing being deputy governor, he would go somewhere else, and then something happened. Jonathan took over from Yar’adua, who had actually said he was going to teach at Ahmadu Bello University as he was finishing his term as governor.

“Yar’adua took over from Obasanjo, who was in prison and was not expecting to come out. But he somehow found himself out of prison. Obasanjo took over from Abacha, who, sadly, even though the five political parties had said he would rule forever, nature took him. Abacha took over from Ernest Shonekan, who was busy at the United African Company of Nigeria, and then they told him to come and be head of state. We can go all the way down but fundamental to governance is knowledge.”

The bishop also argued that democracy’s benefits go beyond physical infrastructure, roads, railways, and other projects. If democracy were solely about infrastructure, people would still be praising authoritarian regimes like Adolf Hitler and apartheid South Africa, which, he said, built impressive infrastructure during their times.

“Democracy’s benefits are often not necessarily measurable. They are largely intangible. It is understanding how to expand the frontiers of human imagination,” he explained.

The bishop also decried the country’s culture of nepotism, saying ministerial appointments were often based on personal relationships rather than merit.

He observed that Nigerians are impatient with the country’s current state of democracy, which he noted is hardly working. Kukah said despite the country’s little progress, Nigerians are never satisfied, adding that the nation will never be a perfect place because such places do not exist.

He said, “We have made a choice to live with democracy as it is, we know that our democracy is hardly working, hardly functioning, although I’d make quick to say that we are very impatient with ourselves, very, very impatient.

“Nigerians are surprised when I say we have done pretty well. We are absolutely not happy, and we will probably never be happy because that’s not how the world is. You’ve got this, you want this, you want that. We are insatiable.

“Now, we are not in a perfect place because perfect places don’t exist, and we shouldn’t be looking for leaders who will take us to a place of perfection because nobody has found that kind of place. However, there are minimum conditions that we require in a leader, and I think we need to use them to measure the whole concept of leadership.

The bishop stressed the need for leaders to set goals and be bold, courageous, and patriotic, adding that true leadership is about influencing citizens, not just holding office.

Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Buba Marwa, charged the students to shun drug abuse. Describing drug abuse as the number one challenge facing the country today, he called on stakeholders to invest in the advancement of youth to ensure that their potential is properly harnessed.

He described the late Amaka Ndoma-Egba as a visionary agent who established Start-Rite Schools to ensure that students learn and imbibe the necessary life skills to navigate an ever-challenging world.

PoliticsSunday Dare Likens Tinubu's Reforms To Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew by Sodiq3(op): 6:07pm On Nov 04, 2024
Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare, has compared President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms to the transformative leadership of Singapore's founding father, Lee Kuan Yew.

He also dismissed the rumours of cabal in the presidency insisting that President Tinubu is 100 per cent in charge of the governance of the country.

Dare who made the observation while speaking at Politics on Sunday program on TVC, noted that though Yew's three major decisions were contentious, they significantly improved Singaporeans' quality of life.

Lee Kuan Yew was the first and longest-serving Prime Minister of Singapore
from 1959 to 1990.

Widely regarded as the founding father of modern Singapore, Lee transformed the city-state from a small, resource-deficient British colony with high rates of illiteracy into the most prosperous country in Southeast Asia.

Under his leadership, Singapore developed a robust economy with one of the highest GDP per capita figures in Asia.

Dare, a former Minister of Sports, said it has come to a time when Nigerians must confront reality, stating that resources and revenue to the government are going down, while the population is increasing.

According to him, President Tinubu has come to change the narrative.

He said: "We have a lot of leakages in our system. And like I said, it must come to a time when you will need a leader to emerge.

"Let me give you Lee Kuan Yew's example, from 1953 to 1990. His story is well-told. When he came in, he took three major decisions that became extremely contentious, yet he stood his ground all through, working with the people, and not explaining, but also making sure that were improvements in the quality of life.

"First, he said let's have English language as a unifier language." He was attacked all through. Second, he said, pay civil servants, public servants, massive salaries which was very important. The third thing he did was to ask that they bring the best people, experts from anywhere around the world, the best expert in energy, power, in education to build the backbone infrastructure needed for Singapore's development.

"Those three decisions were so contentious, but he stayed the course. This president will stay the course because he has seen the data, and he knows that what Nigeria needs now is fixing. I'm sure Nigerians will come to terms with this development and, in no distant future, will start to see the impact. Already, we're seeing it. You look at the CNG.

"You look at NELFUND; it's extremely successful. You look at credit cards; as it is, more than 11,000 civil servants have gotten their money on the lowest interest rate you can ever get, four per cent. This president is at work for this country. This president deals with statistics and data but also understands that, to some extent, there are certain decisions that have to be taken now; if not, this country will suffer for it."

On the issue of Cabal, Dare explained that the idea of cabals are just a few persons who hold key positions that the President needs to meet daily for briefings.

"I think we’ve become so comfortable with the idea of the cabal, and you must understand how the idea of the Cabal, the people they call the Cabal, are the people that are holding the key sectors of the economy.

“These are people who are advisors, who must advise the President on trends, who must put critical data in front of him, and they have access to him. How does access turn you into a member of the cabal? The Minister of Finance, for instance, sees him (Tinubu) on a constant basis to show him all the indicators so that they can see it, they must have constant meetings.

“So what is happening is that this idea of cabal has a negative connotation that we entrench, I think that notion should change, because any government you have 5 to 7 people who are holding key positions and who must brief the President on a constant basis, that access is what people think makes them a cabal.

"The President is 100 per cent in charge and he has always been from day one, and he has shown it when the CBN cybersecurity tax came up, the president canceled it because he dealt with what the facts are.

On the tax reform bill before the National Assembly, the Presidential Aide said the president has acted within the ambits of the law by passing allowing the legislative process to take its course.

He explained that the tax reform bill when signed into law, will be critical for reforms in the various sectors of the economy

Dare noted that developed nations who were at the same level with Nigeria in the past, adopted painful tax reforms which aided them in their economic transformation.

I think it’s absolutely important, because when you look at the four bills right now, at the National Assembly, and they are just bills, they’re not acts yet, that means there’s still an opening to have conversations around the bills, take out some things, readjust certain elements of it, and bring it back.

“I think it’s a remarkable bill and it’s critical for the reforms, the larger reforms in various sectors that the President is working on. When you look at the Nigerian tax bill, the overall bill. You look at the joint tax bill, you look at that for revenue, then you look at the tax administration.

“The President’s preference is to have a de jure approach to it, not a de facto, because even if you do it outside of the legislature, then he must have contravened Nigeria’s constitution. So being a president that understands the law and the Constitution says it’s already there, let’s have the representatives of the people from across the country, let them deliberate on it.

“The people, the governors, Nigerians, can send in whatever comments they have, whatever deviation they have, and then that can be processed, I think that is the best way.

“I think it’s the right way to go, because any other path will bring a crisis, when you look at the tax very well, it targets posterity, not poverty. Look at the revenue tax, for instance, you can keep 100% of the taxes within your domain, that brings about control of your taxes, but also a level of responsibility at the level of state,” he said.

Sports60 Million Nigerians Bet Daily - Lottery Agency by Sodiq3(op): 3:01pm On Oct 05, 2024
From Sodiq Omolaoye, Abuja

The Director-General of the Cross River State Lottery Gaming Agency, Michael Eja, has revealed that about 60 million Nigerians engage in betting activities daily.

He also said Nigeria's gaming industry is presently generating around N500-N600 billion yearly.

Eja who disclosed this during the unveiling of Woskybet company yesterday in Abuja, said the Federal government is taking steps with state lottery agencies to bring the gaming industry's operators into the tax net for more revenue.

According to him, the betting industry in Africa is now worth a staggering $1 billion, adding that Lagos State accounted for a significant chunk of this revenue, generating $243 million in 2023 alone.

He said: "People are beginning to understand the essence of gambling as the gaming industry sells hope and helps in wealth redistribution, creation of jobs and revenue generation.

"The government at various levels are doing their best in upgrading their platforms and working very hard to ensure that all operators are brought to the tax net.

"Overtime, you are going to see improvement in the revenue that the gambling industry will generate towards nations building. In Nigeria presently, we are doing about N500b to N600b yearly.

"Nigeria has a population of about 150 million people and presently from the statistics we have, we know that about 60 million Nigerians gamble on a daily basis. Do the mathematics. We have not even captured 90 per cent of that market"

On his part, Director of Operations Interim Woskybelt, Nurudeen Idrees, said the gaming industry is contributing towards job creation for youths in the country.

"We are unique which makes us stand out in public in terms of completeness with other companies.

“In times of payment, I want to reassure our customers and general public around the country that they should feel free when they win because their money is guaranteed 100 per cent because their wins are their rights.”

According to him, gambling is a game of luck, saying "you either lose or win and everything is about taking risk if you want to move forward as players among others.

“Woskybet offers an unparalleled betting experience, featuring: Competitive odds and generous bonuses, extensive coverage of international and local sports events, real-time score updates and live betting, secure payment systems and instant payouts and dedicated customer support.

“We are committed to providing a safe, secure, and thrilling betting experience for Nigerian sports enthusiasts.”

PoliticsWithdraw Your Petition Against Tinubu, Apapa Faction Tells Obi by Sodiq3(op): 5:23pm On Jun 02, 2023
Knocks NLC, TUC for rejecting subsidy removal

The Lamidi Apapa faction of the Labour Party (LP) has asked the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi to step down his case at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT), noting that he (Obi) is not showing any seriousness.

The faction said the call became necessary following the event that happened in the Tribunal on Thursday where the court stepped down hearing the petition filed by Obi and the Labour Party against the election of President Bola Tinubu.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, Factional National Publicity Secretary of the party, Abayomi Arabambi, maintained that Obi has not been able to provide any concrete evidence to back these claims since PEPT began sitting.

He alleged that Obi went to court to challenge the victory of Tinubu because he (Obi) and his co-travellers had different intentions against the wishes of the Nigerian masses who freely offered their support to the Labour Party.

He stated: “We have followed with keen interest the shameful developments and approach by the so-called legal team assembled by Peter Obi challenging the outcome of the February 25 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and we have, like many Nigerians, come to the conclusion that Obi is not only taking Nigerians for a ride but would continue to waste the hard-earned resources donated by Nigerians for this purpose to even enrich himself the more.

“Obi attempt to cage the sense of thinking of Nigerians by trickily obtaining money from them to fund the court process making them believe that there is something for him at the end of the day that must stop now.

“All of you here who have been following this case can recall that the day we had an altercation in court with Abure’s group, INEC announced that Peter Obi could not pay for CTC form EC08 and other documents to be for the election. That now compelled them to only present only thirty per cent of the materials they would need for the hearing at the Election Petition Tribunal.

How would any right-thinking person go to an election tribunal with only thirty per cent of your documents where not of all them would be accepted or agreed to be tendered by other political parties?

“Three days ago, they said two of their counsels were sick and yesterday they could not even file a single process with the array of SAN with Obi. This is what we have been saying that they are just trying to hoodwink the public, deceiving the Obidients and giving them false hope that they have something at the tribunal.

“It’s evident from the attitude displayed by them when they wrote a letter to INEC that Obi could not pay N1.5 million. Who are they deceiving? Counsels were sick? Just two out of how many of them and they stalled a court process when time is already against our party. Yesterday, the court had to give them a stand down of ten minutes to file their process. They came back and they could not do anything. You heard what the court told them. They are wasting the time of the court and they are not serious.”

Arabambi while declaring that the court has confirmed the fear of the Apapa faction, said the faction had raised alarm from the onset and has now been vindicated.

“That’s why we have consistently maintained that Obi is not serious. He came into the party with nothing. He didn’t fund the election, he didn’t fund the party, and he didn’t do anything for the party. He only came to mess of the entire process and to deceive Nigerians that he has something to offer to them.

Labour Party is thereby calling on him to step down his selfish ambition and stop messing up the party if he has nothing serious to present to the tribunal”, he added.

Speaking on fuel subsidy removal, Arabambi knocked the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for rejecting the new pump price of petrol.

He insisted that the position of the Labour Party on the removal of fuel subsidy during the campaign has not changed, saying “We cannot reverse that position because it was not our candidate that won the presidential election.”

He added: “Whatever we have agreed on during our campaign, and as a party that promotes peace, equity and justice in Nigeria, then we can’t be found approbating and reprobating at the same time. Our Position is that, once Obi said he would remove fuel subsidy from his first day in office, the same organized labour who stood in that position must not be seen working in cross purpose on the same thing that Tinubu, Atiku and even Obi said they were going to do.

“Obi said Subsidy was an organized crime that must be stopped. NLC can’t call for any strike. If they do, it is obvious that they are just being mischievous for a reason best known to them or maybe they have something against the President that they should come out open to tell Nigerians. That is our position as Labour Party.”
