The former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, ordered his arrest and is behind the alleged attempt to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday. Speaking on Friday in an interview with Arise Television, the former governor claimed that Mr Ribadu personally ordered his arrest. PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that Mr El-Rufai was involved in a heated verbal exchange with security operatives at the Abuja airport, shortly after his arrival in the country. According to eyewitness accounts, security officials briefly restrained him and confiscated his international passport before he was escorted out of the airport amid chants from supporters who had gathered to receive him. Claims NSA’s phone call intercepted Mr El-Rufai alleged that the NSA’s phone conversation was intercepted, and that he heard the NSA directing security operatives to detain him. “The NSA’s call was tapped. They do that to our calls too, and we heard him saying they should arrest me,” Mr El-Rufai claimed. The former governor did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegation, and there has been no official response from Mr Ribadu as of the time of filing this report. However, the NSA has previously denied similar allegations. On Friday, a presidential aide expressed concern about Mr El-Rufai’s latest claim. “El-Rufai admitted on a national television that someone tapped the phone of the NSA for him to listen to his conversation. When Charles Aniagolu, the interviewer, interjected that that was an illegal action, El-Rufai agreed to the illegality. By the time he is picked up to produce the person who illegally tapped the NSA’s phone, he would say President Tinubu is a ‘tyrant’ and persecuting him,” Temitope Ajayi, the senior special assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, wrote on Facebook. Allegations against Kaduna governor, ICPC chairman Mr El-Rufai also alleged that Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, NSA Ribadu, and the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had conspired to abduct him. “Let me tell you, Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, the NSA and the ICPC chairman have arranged that I get abducted unfailingly today,” he said during the interview. These claims come amid rising political tension between Mr El-Rufai and some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), following his consistent public criticism of the Bola Tinubu administration. Dadiyata’s disappearance During the interview, Mr El-Rufai was also asked about the disappearance of Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata, a social media commentator who was abducted from his Kaduna residence in 2019 and has not been seen since. The former governor denied any involvement in the incident and rejected suggestions that his administration played a role in the activist’s disappearance. According to him, Dadiyata was primarily a critic of political actors in Kano State rather than Kaduna. “Dadiyata lives in Kaduna; he was not a critic of Kaduna State. We barely knew he resided in Kaduna until his abduction was reported. He was a critic of the Kano government at the time,” he said, suggesting that questions should instead be directed at political figures in Kano. The case of Dadiyata remains unresolved despite repeated calls from civil society groups for a thorough investigation. Kwankwaso and US legislative move Mr El-Rufai also reacted to a bill proposed by some United States lawmakers, demanding sanctions against former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso over alleged links to terrorism in Nigeria. He described the development as politically motivated, dismissing claims that Mr Kwankwaso was associated with terrorism. Mr El-Rufai argued that if scrutiny was to be applied to political actors over the introduction of Sharia law in northern Nigeria, attention should instead focus on Zamfara State, where it was first implemented under then-governor Ahmad Yerima. He also referenced subsequent administrations in Zamfara, suggesting that controversies surrounding the application of Sharia occurred there rather than in Kano under Mr Kwankwaso. Readiness to appear before EFCC Despite alleging political persecution, Mr El-Rufai maintained that he is willing to honour lawful invitations from security and anti-corruption agencies. He confirmed that he would appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday in response to an invitation for questioning. “I have nothing to hide,” he said, denying any wrongdoing during his eight-year tenure as governor of Kaduna State. Both the EFCC and ICPC are investigating corruption allegations against Mr El-Rufai. The former Kaduna governor was a prominent member of the APC and strongly supported the election of President Bola Tinubu. He, however, fell out with the party after the Senate rejected his nomination as minister and his successor as Kaduna governor started probing his administration. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/856479-el-rufai-accuses-ribadu-of-ordering-his-arrest-claims-nsas-phone-tapped.html |
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has renewed its call for the immediate removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that his continued stay in office poses a serious threat to the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process. The Council said muslims across the country would not recognise or legitimise any election conducted under the leadership of an INEC chairman whose integrity is under such a cloud. President of the Council, Sheikh Bashir Umar, made the call on Wednesday during the Council’s 2026 Annual Pre-Ramadan Lecture and General Assembly in Abuja. Speaking on the theme “Nigeria’s Future: Faith, Justice, and Leadership,” Umar said the Council’s demand was anchored on what he said is the INEC chairman’s questionable antecedents, particularly a legal brief he authored which alleged the existence of a Christian genocide in Nigeria. He said the Federal Government has repeatedly dismissed the claim. “This is not the first time the Council is taking this position. In the legal brief he personally sent, he sought to establish the existence of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, a position that is in direct conflict with the official stance of the Federal Government, which has categorically stated that no such genocide exists", the cleric said. Umar said the position taken by the INEC chairman at that time amounted to divisive propaganda and raised serious concerns about his neutrality as the head of Nigeria’s electoral umpire. “For an umpire in a democratic process, you must have someone whose integrity is not compromised and who is clearly unbiased. As far as we are concerned, his integrity has been compromised. The honourable thing for him to do is to resign. If he does not, the government should dismiss or retire him. He clarified that while the Council itself is an advocacy body and not directly involved in litigation, it is aware that other groups have approached courts of competent jurisdiction to challenge the chairman’s appointment and continued stay in office. "The Council must remain resolute in this demand and has clearly stated that the Ummah will not recognise or legitimise any election presided over by a character with questionable integrity, as democratic credibility must never be compromised", he added. The council used the forum to express concerns over worsening insecurity, economic hardship, poor budget implementation, alleged imbalance in federal appointments, and attempts to undermine Muslims’ constitutional right to practise Shari’ah in Muslim-majority states. It also rejected narratives of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, adding that such claims fuel division and threaten national cohesion. Also speaking, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Ecological funds and member representing Kaura-Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, Aminu Sani Jaji, said the timing of the Pre-Ramadan lecture was critical given the country’s security and socio-political challenges. Jaji said Ramadan remained a period of deep spiritual reflection for Muslims, adding that guidance from religious scholars was essential at a time when Nigeria was facing insecurity and heightened religious and political tensions. He warned that unverified claims and divisive narratives, including allegations of religious persecution, could worsen national cohesion if not responsibly addressed. Referring to Nigeria’s designation by the United States as a country of particular concern, Jaji described claims of a “Christian genocide” as misleading, stressing that Nigeria remained a secular state. On his part, the Madakin Zazzau, Mal. Muhammadu Munir Ja’afaru, said since its establishment of the council, it has served as a credible, principled, and courageous voice of the Nigerian Muslim Ummah. “It has consistently demonstrated concern not only for religious matters but also for the broader wellbeing, unity, and development of our nation. "The Council has distinguished itself through strategic engagements, providing guidance rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah, defending constitutional rights, promoting peaceful coexistence, advocating justice, and constructively engaging government and society on critical national issues", he said. https://guardian.ng/news/muslims-will-not-recognise-any-election-conducted-by-amupitan-sharia-council/?utm_source=auto-read-also&utm_medium=web |

The newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, Thursday formally assumed office at the headqiarters of the commission in Abuja, describing his appointment as a divine call to service. Amupitan, who was sworn in earlier by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, took over from May Agbamuche-Mbu, who had been serving as Acting Chairman of the Commission since the exit of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. Speaking during an interactive meeting with INEC directors at shortly after taking over, Amupitan expressed gratitude to God for a "divine assignment,” and vowed to uphold integrity, transparency, and discipline in the management of Nigeria’s electoral process. “I am here for a purpose. Maybe if I had a choice, I would have said I would not come here. But from all indications, I can see that God is moving this country, and my coming is divine. With God saying go, who am I to say no? I am here because I have a role to play to ensure that a new Nigeria is birthed,” he said. Amupitan, who was accompanied by his wife, children, vice chancellor of the University of Jos, Tanko Ishaya and other top officials from the institution, where he previously served, assured the Commission’s staff that his leadership would prioritise their welfare and professional development. The new INEC Chairman said teamwork, accountability, and commitment to credible elections was important, noting that the success of the Commission depends on synergy among its departments and staff. He stressed the need of restoring public confidence in the electoral process, adding that Nigerians must trust that their votes will count. He said: "Our mandate is very clear. That is to deliver free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the people. The integrity of our elections is not negotiable. Every voter must feel confident that their vote counts. “For me, staff welfare is going to be a priority. We will expect a lot from you, and because of that, you also deserve to be well equipped and supported to deliver. We will work assiduously to ensure that your working conditions are conducive and that you have the necessary resources to excel,” he stated. Amupitan who also acknowledged the task ahead, particularly the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, stated that the exercise would serve as a test of INEC’s resolve to uphold credibility and transparency. "Together, let us uphold the values of democracy and work tirelessly for the credibility of our elections. The facts may be challenging, but if we stand united, there is nothing we cannot achieve. “The eyes of the nation are upon us. We must rise to the occasion and demonstrate that we are capable of conducting elections that meet the expectations of Nigerians. "I want to thank you for your commitment, your service, and I look forward to working closely with all of you as we embark on this very, very important mission. He commended Agbamuche-Mbu for her stewardship in the interim period and thanked INEC staff for their dedication to duty. Amupitan urged the staff to work in unity, break silos, and commit to strengthening democratic values through credible elections. https://guardian.ng/featured/i-wont-negotiate-election-integrity-my-coming-to-inec-is-divine-amupitan/ |
N22.7tn printed under Buhari, 'voodoo' economic policies crashed Naira - Dogara By Sodiq Omolaoye, Abuja Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has attributed the decline of the value of naira to economic policies of the previous administration, which he said saw N22.7 trillion printed and injected into the economy. Dogara also described the foreign loan and crude oil–tied measures that sustained it as nothing short of voodoo economics. Noting that the policy under late President Muhammadu Buhari undermined the currency’s value, Dogara argued that the massive liquidity injection, coupled with dual exchange rates and unproductive forex allocations, left the nation’s economy teetering on the brink of collapse by the time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office. Dogara stated this on Tuesday while delivering the maiden distinguished parliamentarian lecture organised by the House of Representatives Press Corps at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja. His lecture, titled “Navigating Tax Reform in Nigeria: Insights on President Tinubu’s Policies”, examined the origins, scope, and expected impact of the tax reforms encapsulated in the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025 and related legislation. The former Speaker, who now chairs the board of National Credit Guarantee Company, said President Tinubu inherited a troubled economy riddled with economic debris, including excessive deficit financing through Ways and Means, dual exchange rates that enriched a few at the expense of many. "By the time President Tinubu took office, the economic debris of the nation had become too conspicuous to be ignored, N22.7 trillion had been printed and injected into the economy in the name of ways and means thereby destroying the value of the Naira in our pockets. "Also the dual exchange rate meant that some anointed people were making hundreds of millions of Naira off forex allocations from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) without producing any goods or offering any services whatsoever and tying our crude sales to foreign loans in the name of forward sales of crude was fast becoming the order of the day. Some of the foreign loans had been procured in order to help strengthen the Naira, a measure that could only be sustained by voodoo economics", he stated. He commended the current government for implementing urgent reforms to avert economic collapse, particularly the 2025 tax reform package. The reforms, he said, consolidate 16 federal tax laws into four principal Acts, expand the tax base to include digital services, virtual currencies, and FX gains, and introduce minimum tax rates for large companies. Dogara stressed that the reforms aim to protect vulnerable Nigerians, encourage investment, enhance competitiveness, and provide the government with resources for infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security. Addressing concerns over the five per cent fuel surcharge, Dogara clarified that it is not a new tax, adding that it will exempt household energy products like kerosene and LPG, and will only take effect under ministerial approval published in the official gazette. Despite applauding the boldness of the reforms, Dogara noted the challenges around uncertainty in interpretation, technological readiness, skilled manpower, and short-term compliance costs. He said businesses must invest in systems and training to adapt, adding that successful tax reform requires public trust. He urged the government to ensure revenues raised are transparently deployed to build roads, power industries, and improve hospitals and schools. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, said Tinubu’s tax reforms was a decisive step toward simplifying compliance, broadening the tax net, and easing the burden on ordinary Nigerians. Abbas who was represented by the House Spokesperson and Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi said the establishment of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms and the harmonisation of tax collection processes set to take effect in January 2026, represent a significant intervention that promises to re-engineer the nation's tax administration architecture for greater efficiency, fairness, and transparency. https://guardian.ng/featured/n22-7tr-printed-under-buhari-voodoo-economic-policies-crashed-naira-dogara/ |

The South West has recorded the highest figures in the first week of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) online voter pre-registration exercise, accounting for more than 61 per cent of the 1,379,342 applications received between August 18 and 24, 2025. This was revealed as the commission commenced the physical registration stage on Monday, August 25, 2025. According to figures released by the commission on Monday, Osun State recorded the highest number of pre-registrations with 393,269, followed by Lagos (222,205) and Ogun (132,823). Oyo recorded 66,951, while Ekiti registered 29,685 and Ondo had 3,426. Collectively, the South West accounted for 848,359 pre-registrations. The South South came a distant second with 169,377 applications, while the South East recorded 64,696, the lowest among the six geo-political zones. The document revealed that South East’s tally was heavily skewed by Anambra’s 62,698 registrations, while other states in the region; Abia (772), Ebonyi (261), Enugu (484) and Imo (481) recorded extremely low numbers. These figures are among the lowest nationwide, in contrast with the massive turnout in Osun, Lagos, and Ogun. In the North, the North Central zone, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led with 243,768 pre-registrations, driven largely by the FCT’s 107,682 and Kogi’s 58,546. The North West recorded 145,490, while the North East emerged as the least-performing zone in the region with 77,652 pre-registrations, representing just 5.6 per cent of the national total. The data indicated that southern Nigeria accounted for 66.2 per cent (912,432) of the registrations, while the North recorded 33.8 per cent (466,910). The demographic breakdown shows that youths aged 18–34 years made up the majority with 62.37 per cent (860,286) of pre-registrants. Middle-aged voters (35–49 years) followed with 24.76 per cent, while elderly (50–69 years) accounted for 11.41 per cent, and those aged 70 and above represented only 1.46 per cent. Gender distribution revealed that women slightly outnumbered men at 52.04 per cent (717,856) compared to 47.96 per cent (661,486). Students were the single largest occupational group with 27.15 per cent (374,534), followed by business persons at 24.82 per cent (342,363) and traders at 11.68 per cent (161,137). Artisans accounted for 10.12 per cent, while farmers and fishers represented 9.23 per cent. Civil servants and public servants collectively made up less than five per cent. The current figures however reflected online and initial registrations only as applicants are required to complete their registration at designated INEC physical registration centres before they can be added to the official voter register. INEC said the physical CVR is taking place at 811 centres across the country, including all 774 Local Government Area offices and State offices, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday. https://guardian.ng/news/cvr-swest-leads-1-3m-voter-pre-registration-as-seast-records-lowest/#google_vignette |

We should cut this man some slack. He should continue his good works in JAMB. I like when people admit to mistakes and take full responsibility for their actions. It is left for him and the President to decide on the next step. If he resigns, fine. If the president decides to sack him, still fine. And if the president believes the work he has done in JAMB outweigh the present mistakes and decides to leave him, still fine. But at least, there is some form of accountability and transparency from his end. |
The House of Representatives has postponed the scheduled special Session on Tax Reform Bills slated for Tuesday, December 3, 2024 indefinitely. The lower chamber said the decision is to allow for wider consultations on the proposed legislations. This is contained in an internal memo sent to members of the House, signed by the House Clerk, Dr Yahaya Danzaria on Saturday. Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu had after a long closed-door session on Thursday announced that the lower chamber would special session on Tuesday to deliberate on the tax bills. The House held a long closed-door session on Thursday that lasted over one hour before resuming plenary session. "We will have a special session over the tax bill on Tuesday. This conversation is going to continue from now till Tuesday when we will invite these resource persons to be here to engage us. Thereafter we will decide which way to go,” Kalu said. The four tax bills; Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, are currently before the two chambers of the National Assembly. However, the bills have met stiff opposition from the 36 state governors and northern stakeholders who called for their withdrawal to allow room for more consultation. The memo by the House clerk reads, “I am directed by the House Leadership to inform all Honourable Members that the Special Session, initially scheduled for Tuesday, 3rd December, 2024, to discuss all the Tax Reform Bills, has been postponed to a later date. “This rescheduling is due to the need for further and broader consultations with all relevant stakeholders. “A new date and venue for the session will be communicated in due course. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding”. https://guardian.ng/news/reps-postpone-special-session-on-tinubus-tax-bills-indefinitely/ |
Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto Matthew Kukah has said that Nigeria’s presidents since independence, except President Bola Tinubu, assumed office by accident. Nevertheless, he lamented that the country still suffers despite Tinubu’s preparedness to govern. Given the bishop’s history of sharp critiques of Nigerian governments, his nuanced stance on the Tinubu administration—acknowledging its preparedness while lamenting the nation’s struggles—may perplex many Nigerians who view past administrations more favourably amid current economic challenges. Kukah spoke while delivering his keynote address at the 4th Amaka Ndoma-Egba Memorial Lecture, which was held in Abuja yesterday on the theme “Leaders of Tomorrow: Creating Lasting Change In A Complex World.” The deceased, who was wife to the former Senate Leader Ndoma Egba, died in an auto crash in Ondo State in 2020. The event, held at Start-Rite Schools, Abuja, saw Cross River Governor Bassey Otu commission a legacy building in honour of the deceased. Kukah lamented that Nigeria’s leadership crisis was caused by its leaders’ lack of knowledge, capacity, and preparedness.Tracing the history of Nigeria’s leadership, the cleric observed that none of the country’s past leaders, including former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari, Goodluck Jonathan, Umaru Yar’adua, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ernest Shonekan, and Sani Abacha, among others, came to power prepared. He said, “I don’t want to bore you, but run through, from the beginning, you’ll find that almost everybody who came to power in Nigeria was the result of one accident or the other. President Tinubu, well, he prepared for it. However, we’re still trying to get off the ground. But he took over from Buhari, who had already given up. “Buhari took over from Jonathan, who was thinking that after finishing being deputy governor, he would go somewhere else, and then something happened. Jonathan took over from Yar’adua, who had actually said he was going to teach at Ahmadu Bello University as he was finishing his term as governor. “Yar’adua took over from Obasanjo, who was in prison and was not expecting to come out. But he somehow found himself out of prison. Obasanjo took over from Abacha, who, sadly, even though the five political parties had said he would rule forever, nature took him. Abacha took over from Ernest Shonekan, who was busy at the United African Company of Nigeria, and then they told him to come and be head of state. We can go all the way down but fundamental to governance is knowledge.” The bishop also argued that democracy’s benefits go beyond physical infrastructure, roads, railways, and other projects. If democracy were solely about infrastructure, people would still be praising authoritarian regimes like Adolf Hitler and apartheid South Africa, which, he said, built impressive infrastructure during their times. “Democracy’s benefits are often not necessarily measurable. They are largely intangible. It is understanding how to expand the frontiers of human imagination,” he explained. The bishop also decried the country’s culture of nepotism, saying ministerial appointments were often based on personal relationships rather than merit. He observed that Nigerians are impatient with the country’s current state of democracy, which he noted is hardly working. Kukah said despite the country’s little progress, Nigerians are never satisfied, adding that the nation will never be a perfect place because such places do not exist. He said, “We have made a choice to live with democracy as it is, we know that our democracy is hardly working, hardly functioning, although I’d make quick to say that we are very impatient with ourselves, very, very impatient. “Nigerians are surprised when I say we have done pretty well. We are absolutely not happy, and we will probably never be happy because that’s not how the world is. You’ve got this, you want this, you want that. We are insatiable. “Now, we are not in a perfect place because perfect places don’t exist, and we shouldn’t be looking for leaders who will take us to a place of perfection because nobody has found that kind of place. However, there are minimum conditions that we require in a leader, and I think we need to use them to measure the whole concept of leadership. The bishop stressed the need for leaders to set goals and be bold, courageous, and patriotic, adding that true leadership is about influencing citizens, not just holding office. Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Buba Marwa, charged the students to shun drug abuse. Describing drug abuse as the number one challenge facing the country today, he called on stakeholders to invest in the advancement of youth to ensure that their potential is properly harnessed. He described the late Amaka Ndoma-Egba as a visionary agent who established Start-Rite Schools to ensure that students learn and imbibe the necessary life skills to navigate an ever-challenging world. https://guardian.ng/news/nigeria/all-nigerian-presidents-were-unprepared-except-tinubu-says-kukah/#google_vignette |

From Sodiq Omolaoye, Abuja The Director-General of the Cross River State Lottery Gaming Agency, Michael Eja, has revealed that about 60 million Nigerians engage in betting activities daily. He also said Nigeria's gaming industry is presently generating around N500-N600 billion yearly. Eja who disclosed this during the unveiling of Woskybet company yesterday in Abuja, said the Federal government is taking steps with state lottery agencies to bring the gaming industry's operators into the tax net for more revenue. According to him, the betting industry in Africa is now worth a staggering $1 billion, adding that Lagos State accounted for a significant chunk of this revenue, generating $243 million in 2023 alone. He said: "People are beginning to understand the essence of gambling as the gaming industry sells hope and helps in wealth redistribution, creation of jobs and revenue generation. "The government at various levels are doing their best in upgrading their platforms and working very hard to ensure that all operators are brought to the tax net. "Overtime, you are going to see improvement in the revenue that the gambling industry will generate towards nations building. In Nigeria presently, we are doing about N500b to N600b yearly. "Nigeria has a population of about 150 million people and presently from the statistics we have, we know that about 60 million Nigerians gamble on a daily basis. Do the mathematics. We have not even captured 90 per cent of that market" On his part, Director of Operations Interim Woskybelt, Nurudeen Idrees, said the gaming industry is contributing towards job creation for youths in the country. "We are unique which makes us stand out in public in terms of completeness with other companies. “In times of payment, I want to reassure our customers and general public around the country that they should feel free when they win because their money is guaranteed 100 per cent because their wins are their rights.” According to him, gambling is a game of luck, saying "you either lose or win and everything is about taking risk if you want to move forward as players among others. “Woskybet offers an unparalleled betting experience, featuring: Competitive odds and generous bonuses, extensive coverage of international and local sports events, real-time score updates and live betting, secure payment systems and instant payouts and dedicated customer support. “We are committed to providing a safe, secure, and thrilling betting experience for Nigerian sports enthusiasts.” https://guardian.ng/business-services/60-million-nigerians-bet-daily-lottery-agency/ |
