PoliticsAbba Kyari's Burial: Why I Was Barred From Aso Rock; Garba Shehu Explains by solaugo1(op): 1:39pm On Apr 19, 2020
Abba Kyari's Burial: Why I Was Barred From Aso Rock; Garba Shehu Explains (Read Tweets)

https://i2.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Malam-Garba-Shehu.jpg?w=653&ssl=1

Some top aides of President Muhammadu Buhari have been denied access into the Presidential Villa in Abuja after returning from the burial of the late Chief of Staff to Buhari, Abba Kyari, today.

The burial at Gudu Cemetery was attended by a large crowd – most of whom had no nose mask or hand gloves on them for protection against Coronavirus.

This development violated the social distancing rule put in place by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and exposed attendees including the Presidential aides to the risk of contracting the highly contagious and deadly disease, which claimed the life of Kyari.

Information reaching us is that some of the President's aides refused access into Aso Villa after returning from the burial include State House Chief Protocol Officer, Ambassador Lawal Kazaure, Special Assistant to the President, Yusuf Sabiu, a nephew to the President, Musa Haro Daura, and Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the, Garba Shehu.

Others are National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, Director-General of National Intelligence Agency, Mr Ahmad Rufai, and Personal Assistant on New Media to President Buhari, Bashir Ahmed, among several more persons.

In a swift reaction, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the, Garba Shehu took to twitter to explain his side of the story.....

He said;

There is nothing extraordinary about those of us who attend Abba Kyari’s funeral being advised to distance ourselves from the Villa.

This is in line with the standard rules put in place by the National Center for Disease Control, @NCDCgov
and the Federal Ministry of Health. You do these things to stop the spread of #Coronavirus.

For the most part, the Villa has operated digitally in the last few weeks so there is really nothing new to this.

https://i2.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Garba-Shehu.png?w=602&ssl=1

Our reporter gathered that security personnel at the Villa turned back the aides of President Muhammadu Buhari after attending the burial ceremony of Mallam Kyari and coming in contact with several persons against the rule of the NCDC.

“President Buhari is not happy that the aides decided to violate clear protocols and guidelines of the NCDC and he directs that they should keep off the Presidential Villa to undergo self-isolation,” a Presidency official says.

HealthPresident Buhari Dispel Rumors Of #whereisbuhari; Approves 10bn Grant For Lagos by solaugo1(op): 9:30pm On Mar 26, 2020
COVID-19: President Buhari Dispel Rumors of #WhereIsBuhari; Approves 10bn Grant To Lagos State (Read Full Speech)

https://i1.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/president-muhammadu-buhari-meets-with-nigerians-in-diaspora1810777337..jpg?w=625&ssl=1

Over the last few days I have received extensive briefings on the state of the nation as it relates to the Covid-19 pandemic, from the relevant Federal Government agencies as well as the Lagos State Government.

Accordingly, I approved the following:

The immediate release of a 10 billion Naira grant to Lagos State, which remains the epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak in Nigeria. This grant will enable Lagos increase its capacity to control and contain the outbreak, while also supporting other States with capacity-building.

The immediate release of a 5 billion Naira special intervention fund to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) to equip, expand and provide personnel to its facilities and laboratories across the country.

The Nigerian Air Force is already making its fleet available to the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, to enable a better coordinated and more effective response across the country.

To protect our homeland from external exposure, I directed the immediate closure of our International Airports and Land Borders for four weeks in the first instance, to enable us put up the appropriate policies, processes and infrastructure to cope with suspected and confirmed cases at home, without risking a compounding of the situation with more imported cases.

The inconvenience caused by these flight and travel restrictions to our fellow citizens abroad who want to return home is regrettable, but it is necessary for the greater good, and I thank you all for your understanding and cooperation.

I have also directed that only cargo vessels that have been at sea for more than 14 days be allowed to dock in our ports, after the crew have been tested and confirmed disease-free by the Port Health Authorities.

This 14-day restriction however does not apply to vessels carrying oil and gas products as by their nature, there is minimal human contact.

We have also suspended the movement of commuter trains to limit the spread of the virus to other parts of the country.

I have directed the NCDC to draft all its recent retirees back into service to beef up our manpower as we respond to the pandemic.

Furthermore, all NCDC staff and experts who are away on training or international assignments are to return immediately.

Already the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) are conducting an evacuation mission to bring back some of our specialists in Central Africa, to enable them support the national response.

We are also looking at fiscal measures to minimise the negative impact of this pandemic on the livelihood of millions of Nigerians.

As you are aware we have begun the process of reviewing the federal budget. We shall communicate our fiscal interventions once the budget review process is concluded.

In the meantime, I have directed the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, to work with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), to ensure that all production of essential items such as food, medical and pharmaceutical products continues unhindered.

We are engaging our international friends and partners to share knowledge and to seek their support in our response to the pandemic. We are grateful for the show of support thus far – we have already started receiving goods and supplies intended to help us scale up our efforts.

Let me specially thank and commend all of the hard and heroic work being done by our medical personnel, the NCDC, Port Health Authorities, Security Agencies, State Governments, and all ad-hoc staff and volunteers.

I urge all Nigerians to be mindful of those among us who seek to spread panic and misinformation, and sow confusion at this time.

We must all pay attention only to the relevant government agencies working day and night to make accurate and useful information available to the public.

I will also ask all of us to strictly obey all public health guidelines and instructions issued by the Federal and State health authorities, regarding personal hygiene and social distancing.

These guidelines will be updated from time to time as new information and treatments are obtained.

In the meantime, I want to assure all Nigerians, that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting all Nigerians. We seek your full support and cooperation as we go through this very difficult time. Together we will triumph over this pandemic.

EducationUniversity of Ghana Suspends Lecturers after 'Sex-for-Grades' Expose (Photo) by solaugo1(op): 3:43pm On Feb 18, 2020

Two Ghanaian university lecturers have been suspended without pay after a BBC investigation reported they had sexually harassed undercover reporters posing as students.

The University of Ghana suspended Ransford Gyampo for six months and Paul Butakor for four months. Both deny the allegations made last year in BBC Africa Eye's sex-for-grades documentary.

A Nigerian lecturer was also suspended after it was broadcast in October.

The academics were secretly filmed as part of a year-long investigation. BBC journalists posed as prospective students to expose sexual harassment and misconduct at both the University of Ghana and the University of Lagos.

In the aftermath of the film - which sparked widespread social media outrage in Ghana and Nigeria - the University of Ghana lecturers were suspended on full salary pending an internal investigation.

On Monday, the university's disciplinary committee said it had ruled that Prof Gyampo and Dr Butakor had breached the university's code of conduct rules.

The lecturers would undergo training about the university's sexual harassment and misconduct policy and would resume work only after a positive assessment, their statement said.

The pair would also continue to undergo annual assessments for the next five years, the committee added. The reaction to the lecturers' suspension has been mixed, reports the BBC's Thomas Naadi from the capital, Accra.

Some believe the punishment is too lenient whilst others think the lecturers' actions were not that serious.

On Monday, Nigeria's Senate began debating a bill, initiated after the BBC Africa Eye investigation, that aims to prevent the sexual harassment of university students.

It wants five-year jail terms for lecturers found guilty of sexually harassing students.

Erstwhile Bayelsa State governor-elect David Lyon was at a rehearsal for his swearing-in when Supreme Court sacked him.

Dressed in a multi-coloured shirt and flanked by military personnel, Lyon was seen in pictures having his pre-swearing-in exercise on the parade ground.

Lyon was seen in all-smiles waving at supporters who cheered him.

The Supreme Court on Thursday nullified the election of Bayelsa State governor-elect David Lyon and his deputy-elect Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, a day before their swearing-in on Friday, February 14.

The court said Degi-Eremienyo, who was Lyon’s running mate in the election, forged the certificate he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The court ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate Senator Douye Diri who came second in the election.

Early in the year, Lyon, who was yet to be sworn in as Bayelsa State governor, said he had been awarded Nigeria’s best performing governor for 2019.

Although Lyon did not mention the organisation that awarded him but attributed the award to ‘God’.

“I am not even used to receiving awards,” Lyon said while his supporters celebrated his acclaimed feat with applauses.

“This will not be the first and it will not be the last.”
