BREAKING: Jamb Reduces UTME Registration Fee

JAMB has drastically reduced the UTME Registration Fee for foreign candidates. This was made known by the Jamb Registrar at the on-going 2018 POLICY MEETING on admission in Osun State.

https://i2.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/jamb-logo.png?w=450&ssl=1

The UTME Registration fee was reduced from $150 to $30.

The 2018 POLICY MEETING of JAMB, which decides the cut-off marks for various courses in Nigeria Universities, Polytechnics, Monotechnics and Colleges of Education is on-going at the moment.

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, however, said that the policy meeting would continue to be the forum where the agenda, guidelines, modalities, and timelines would be set for the purpose of admissions to universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria.

“Therefore, no admission to any tertiary institutions should be announced before the policy meeting. ” It is appreciated that the meeting is being held early enough for the commencement of the new session.

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board should ensure that the policy meeting is now held not later than June every year”, Adamu said. In his remarks, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, said UTME scores were not the cut off marks to gain admission into universities.

WebmastersWebmaster: GDPR Compliance – Everything You Need To Know by solaugo1(op): 10:48am On May 27, 2018
Are you confused by GDPR, and how it will impact your WordPress site? GDPR, short for General Data Protection Regulation, is an European Union law that you have likely heard about. We have received dozens of emails from users asking us to explain GDPR in plain English and share tips on how to make your WordPress site GDPR compliant. In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about GDPR and WordPress (without the complex legal stuff).

https://wordpress.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/learning-wordpress-1.jpg

What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union (EU) law taking effect on May 25, 2018. The goal of GDPR is to give EU citizens control over their personal data and change the data privacy approach of organizations across the world. You’ve likely gotten dozens of emails from companies like Google and others regarding GDPR, their new privacy policy, and bunch of other legal stuff. That’s because the EU has put in hefty penalties for those who are not in compliance.

Fines
Basically after May 25th, 2018, businesses that are not in compliance with GDPR’s requirement can face large fines up to 4% of a company’s annual global revenue OR €20 million (whichever is greater). This is enough reason to cause wide-spread panic among businesses around the world.

This brings us to the big question that you might be thinking about: Does GDPR apply to my WordPress site? The answer is YES. It applies to every business, large and small, around the world (not just in the European Union).

If your website has visitors from European Union countries, then this law applies to you. But don’t panic, this isn’t the end of the world.

While GDPR has the potential to escalate to those high level of fines, it will start with a warning, then a reprimand, then a suspension of data processing, and if you continue to violate the law, then the large fines will hit.

GDPR Fines and Penalties
The EU isn’t some evil government that is out to get you. Their goal is to protect consumers, average people like you and me from reckless handling of data / breaches because it’s getting out of control.

The maximum fine part in our opinion is largely to get the attention of large companies like Facebook and Google, so this regulation is NOT ignored. Furthermore, this encourage companies to actually put more emphasis on protecting the rights of people.

Once you understand what is required by GDPR and the spirit of the law, then you will realize that none of this is too crazy. We will also share tools / tips to make your WordPress site GDPR compliant.

What is required under GDPR?
The goal of GDPR is to protect user’s personally identifying information (PII) and hold businesses to a higher standard when it comes to how they collect, store, and use this data. The personal data includes: name, emails, physical address, IP address, health information, income, etc.

GDPR Personal Data
While the GDPR regulation is 200 pages long, here are the most important pillars that you need to know:

Explicit Consent – if you’re collecting personal data from an EU resident, then you must obtain explicit consent that’s specific and unambiguous. In other words, you can’t just send unsolicited emails to people who gave you their business card or filled out your website contact form because they DID NOT opt-in for your marketing newsletter (that’s called SPAM by the way, and you shouldn’t be doing that anyways). For it to be considered explicit consent, you must require a positive opt-in (i.e no pre-ticked checkbox), contain clear wording (no legalese), and be separate from other terms & conditions.

Rights to Data – you must inform individuals where, why, and how their data is processed / stored. An individual has the right to download their personal data and an individual also has the right to be forgotten meaning they can ask for their data to be deleted. This will make sure that when you hit Unsubscribe or ask companies to delete your profile, then they actually do that (hmm, go figure). I’m looking at you Zenefits, still waiting for my account to be deleted for 2 years and hoping that you stop sending me spam emails just because I made the mistake of trying out your service.

Breach Notification – organizations must report certain types of data breaches to relevant authorities within 72 hours, unless the breach is considered harmless and poses no risk to individual data. However if a breach is high-risk, then the company MUST also inform individuals who’re impacted right away. This will hopefully prevent cover-ups like Yahoo that was not revealed until the acquisition.

Data Protection Officers – if you are a public company or process large amounts of personal information, then you must appoint a data protection officer. Again this is not required for small businesses. Consult an attorney if you’re in doubt.

GDPR Data Protection Officer - To put it in plain English, GDPR makes sure that businesses can’t go around spamming people by sending emails they didn’t ask for. Businesses can’t sell people’s data without their explicit consent (good luck getting this consent). Businesses have to delete user’s account and unsubscribe them from email lists if the user ask you to do that. Businesses have to report data breaches and overall be better about data protection.

As of WordPress 4.9.6, the WordPress core software is GDPR compliant. WordPress core team has added several GDPR enhancements to make sure that WordPress is GDPR compliant. It’s important to note that when we talk about WordPress, we’re talking about self-hosted WordPress.org (see the difference: vs WordPress.org).

Having said that, due to the dynamic nature of websites, no single platform, plugin or solution can offer 100% GDPR compliance. The GDPR compliance process will vary based on the type of website you have, what data you store, and how you process data on your site.

By default WordPress 4.9.6 now comes with the following GDPR enhancement tools:

Comments Consent - WordPress Comments Opt-in for GDPR
By default, WordPress used to store the commenters name, email and website as a cookie on the user’s browser. This made it easier for users to leave comments on their favorite blogs because those fields were pre-populated.

Due to GDPR’s consent requirement, WordPress has added the comment consent checkbox. The user can leave a comment without checking this box. All it would mean is that they would have to manually enter their name, email, and website every time they leave a comment.

Update: If your theme is not showing the comment privacy checkbox, then please make sure that you have updated to WordPress 4.9.6 and are using the latest version of your theme. Also please make sure that you are logged-out when testing to see if the checkbox is there.

If the checkbox is still not showing, then your theme is likely overriding the default WordPress comment form. Here’s a step by step guide on how to add a GDPR comment privacy checkbox in your WordPress theme.

Data Export and Erase Feature - WordPress Data Handling - GDPR
WordPress offers site owners the ability to comply with GDPR’s data handling requirements and honor user’s request for exporting personal data as well as removal of user’s personal data.

WordPress Privacy Policy Generator for GDPR
WordPress now comes with a built-in privacy policy generator. It offers a pre-made privacy policy template and offer you guidance in terms of what else to add, so you can be more transparent with users in terms of what data you store and how you handle their data.

These three things are enough to make a default WordPress blog GDPR compliant. However it is very likely that your website has additional features that will also need to be in compliance.

Areas on Your Website that are Impacted by GDPR
As a website owner, you might be using various WordPress plugins that store or process data like contact forms, analytics, email marketing, online store, membership sites, etc. Depending on which which WordPress plugins you are using on your website, you would need to act accordingly to make sure that your website is GDPR compliant. A lot of the best WordPress plugins have already gone ahead and added GDPR enhancement features.

SportsNigerians React To World Cup 30-Man Provisional Squad by solaugo1(op): 7:59pm On May 15, 2018
‘Unquestionable’, ‘promising’ – More Nigerians react to world cup list (Read Comments)

https://i0.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/%E2%80%98Unquestionable%E2%80%99-%E2%80%98promising%E2%80%99-%E2%80%93-More-Nigerians-react-to-world-cup-list-Read-Comments.jpg?w=1000&ssl=1

It seems the last has not been heard about the list of 30 players released by Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr for the 2018 FIFA world cup scheduled for Russia in June. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had on Monday released Coach Gernot Rohr’s 30-man provisional squad for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup finals.

https://i1.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Screen-Shot-05-15-18-at-07.39-PM.jpg?w=632&ssl=1

Amaraizu, who is NLO’s Director in-charge of the South-East, said that Rohr and his technical team must have taken pains and time to study the list over and over again. “It is the best we have and we are bringing to the table for now,’’ he added.

One striking feauture of the Eagles list is the presence of players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in the list. The NPFL contingent is led by Enyimba first choice goalie Ikechuwu Ezenwa, CHAN 2018 and former U-17 champion Dele Ajiboye, and NPFL top striker Junior Lokosa.

https://i2.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Screen-Shot-05-15-18-at-07.39-PM-002.jpg?w=632&ssl=1

Junior Lokosa is on course to break the NPFL scorer’s chart as he has bagged 18 goals for Kano Pillars. On sunday he scored a brace as Kano Pillars thumped Katsina United 3-1 in a North-Western derby. Amaraizu said the number of NPFL players showed that the Nigerian leagues had grown.

“I must commend Coach Rohr and his technical team for blending quality NPFL players into the team in the provisional list. “It clearly shows that the Nigerian league is growing and producing quality players capable of shouldering international responsibility for the country,’’ he added.

Promising
Former Green Eagles Goalkeeper, Emmanuel Okala said he personally saw the provisional list as a good list “with lots of hope in it’’. He noted that Rohr had taken the bull by the horn by ensuring that dedicated and strong legs were marshalled out to represent Nigeria at the World finals in Russia.

https://i2.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Screen-Shot-05-15-18-at-07.39-PM-001.jpg?w=632&ssl=1

“He (Rohr) is in charge and I know he always do the best for the country. “I have no reservation that the list is a good one and provisionally the best for the country for now,’’ he said. Okala, who is the longest goalkeeper for Nigeria, however, said that he was happy for the new entrants into the squad – Junior Lokosa and Simeon Nwankwo.

He said that he had known Simeon Nwankwo for some years now, even from the time he played in Nnaka League in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra. “I was overwhelmed with joy when I heard that Nwankwo, made the list.

“I have known him years back even in our local Nnaka League to be a great player that will go places. “Today, that forecast I made about the lad then is manifesting. He is simply a great player. “I pray he joins other great and wonderful players in the team to make Nigerians proud,’’ he added.

Ground work
Samuel Ikpea, chairman Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC) described the 30 man provisional list of the Super Eagles released as a good ground work ahead of 2018 FIFA world cup. “I must commend Rohr on the list; it is a sign of his plan to take the nation far in the world forthcoming world cup.

“In spite of our qualification and awareness of our participation in the forthcoming world cup in Russia, fans have been eager to know calibre of players that will make the team. “So with this development, the consciousness is now on the air and I am sure that people are watching and expecting the coach to select the best for the competition,” he said.

PoliticsI Was Invited to the Senate Because of Dino Melaye - IGP Insists (Read Letters) by solaugo1(op): 11:37am On May 14, 2018
Press Release - SENATE SHOULD STOP MISLEADING NIGERIANS

https://i1.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/I-Was-Invited-to-the-Senate-Because-of-Dino-Melaye-IGP-Insists-See-Official-Letters-from-Senate1.jpg?w=871&ssl=1

The NPF attention has been drawn to media publication credited to one Sen. Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs that “IGP should stop holding on to the straw on why he refused to comply with the invitation of the Senate for him to come.

The incidents of killings in some part of the country are being addressed by the Nigeria Police Force and other security and safety agencies in the Nation. While normalcy have been restored in most of the affected areas, hundreds of suspects directly responsible for these dastardly acts have been arrested and are being prosecuted in the affected States.

Over Five Thousand (5000) prohibited firearms have been recovered from wrong hands across the Federation on the directives of the IGP in the mop-up operations currently ongoing throughout the Country.

These are part of the brief the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Department of Operations was delegated by the IGP to deliver on his behalf to the Senate, but he was not allowed.

The release of the purported list of killings in Nigeria in 2018 by the Office of the Senate President is shocking, unfortunate and capable of worsening the security situation in the Country. It is mischievous and heinous to play politics with people’s lives; even if it is a soul.

The release is speculative and not supported by any fact. Office of the Senate President does not receive or process security report from State commands. The recent claim by the Senate that the reason for inviting the IGP is to brief them on the recent killings in some part of the Country is an afterthought which can be seen from the headings of their invitation letters.

If the Senate is sincerely interested in knowing the strategies adopted by the Police in tackling the killings in the affected States, they would not have invited the IGP to speak on the strategies of the Force on National Television.

The Senate’s action to cover the appearance of the IGP on National Television is against National Security, unconventional and it negates global security practice.

There is nowhere in the world where security matters are discussed on National Television, even the Senate deliberation and Decision on the appearance of the IGP were done in close session. One wonders why security strategies of the Force to tackle the killings in the affected States would be discussed on National Television.

The NPF has severally reiterated that it holds the Nigerian Senate in high esteem and regards, but will not be cowed from ensuring the supremacy of the laws of the land, preservation of law & order & above all the full enforcement of the rule of law throughout the Country.

The Force will also continue to resist any intimidation from any quarter either constituent or otherwise which run contrary to the provisions of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and other extant laws.

By insisting that the Senate abides by the constitutions and provisions in the Police act and regulations, the IGP is not holding on to any straw as asserted by the Senate Spokesperson but to the rule of law to ensure that there is no sacred cow. It is incumbent on the Force to educate Sen. Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi that IGP was represented at the Senate on 26/4/2018 and 2/5/2018 as provided for and in accordance with the extant laws.

“INVITATION TO BRIEF THE SENATE ON THE INHUMAN TREATMENT METED ON SENATOR DINO MELAYE OVER A MATTER THAT IS PENDING BEFORE A COURT OF COMPETENT LAW COURT; AND OTHER KILLINGS ACROSS NIGERIA”. Copies of the two invitation letters are attached for clarity and public information.

The pinch emphasis on security matters in the invitation letters was diversionary to attract undeserved public sympathy in the Senate’s desperate bid to trivialize and water down the crime and criminal liabilities for which Senator Dino Melaye is standing trial.

It is pertinent to let the public be aware that the Inspector General of Police since assumption of duty in June, 2016 has appeared about Ten (10) times before the Senate on different issues of National Importance.

The Nigeria Police Force as a law abiding entity will continue to uphold the rule of law in all its ramifications and also ensure that nobody under any guise, no matter how highly placed is allowed to pervert the course of Justice.

Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West was on Thursday arraigned by the Federal Government on charges of peddling falsehood.
Melaye, according to the police, gave false information over an attempt on his life.

He had reported to the police that some people made attempt to kill him on April 15, 2017, which the police said it turned out to be false. Meanwhile, no fewer than 11 Senators stormed the court to show solidarity with the Senator who is a member of All Progressive Congress. Among the Senators who appeared in court was Andy Uba, Ben Bruce, Phillip Aduda, Shehu Sani, among others.

As at the time of filing this report (7:00pm 1st March, 2018) Senator Dino Melaye has not fulfilled the bail conditions and still being held by the court registrar. All road leading to the court has been cordoned off....no vehicular movement within the premises of the court....

Melaye also stormed the court with a retinue of hired protesters welding placards with inscriptions “istandwithdino if you speak the truth you die”
The police had said Melaye falsely accused the Chief of Staff to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Edward Onoja David, in the said assassination attempt.

In the first count charge, the Senator was accused of deliberately giving false information to the police to frame Governor Bello’s chief of staff as the mastermind of the assassination attempt on him at his home town in Ayeroro-Gbede in Kogi State last year April. According to the charges signed by Shaibu Labaran, the police discovered the alleged falsehood in Melaye’s claim while investigating the assassination claim.

In the second count charge, Melaye was accused of making false statement of fact in a telephone conversation with Muhammed Abubakar, son of the late Former Governor for Kogi State with the intention of harming Edward David Onoja.

Shortly after Melaye pleaded not guilty, his lawyer Ricky Tarfa (SAN) urged the court to grant the defendant bail on self recognisance pending hearing of the matter. But the bail application was opposed by the prosecution counsel, Shaibu Labaran.

Labaran also said that if the defendant is granted bail he is likely to use his position as a Senator to intimidate potential witnesses. After dismissing the prosecutor’s opposition, Justice Olasumbo Goodluck granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety. However, the Judge ruled that the surety must be civil servant of at least grade level 14 in any Federal parastatal

The surety must also provide proof of resident at the Federal Capital Territory. Subsequently, Justice Olasumbo adjourned the matter till May 16 and 17 for hearing.

Boko Haram Attack: Secure the Release of Missing School Girls In Yobe - President Buhari Orders Military

https://i1.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/President-Buhari-Meets-Service-Chiefs-At-Home1.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&ssl=1

Three days after a suspected Boko Haram assault on a high school in Yobe State, the police are still trying to ascertain the whereabouts of 30 schoolgirls, officials told NNN Wednesday. Suspected Boko Haram operatives on Monday stormed Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Bursari Local Government Area, Yobe State, carting away foodstuff amongst other valuables.

Reports also emerged that the insurgents seized scores of girls at the school, although official confirmation of this had been difficult. NNN gathered from the police that some of the students have not been found. In tweet released few minutes ago on the official twitter handle of President Buhari, the Nigerian Military has been ordered to secure the release of the missing school girls in Yobe. The Statement read thus:

I have directed the Military and Police to mobilize immediately to ensure that all the missing girls of Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, are found. The Minister of Defence will also lead a Federal Government delegation to Yobe tomorrow, to ascertain the situation.

“The total number of students at the school 906. As at yesterday, we had counted 809. After that, we started locating them in one or two, But the school authorities have not been able to account for 30 students,” Yobe police commissioner, Sunmonu Abdulmaliki, told NNN by telephone Wednesday evening.

But the police chief warned that the public should not take this to mean that they were kidnapped. “It is not impossible that some of them even left for home without telling the school authorities. “As I am talking to you, I have no evidence to say that they were abducted or they were not abducted,” he added.

Mr. Abdulmaliki said the military had taken over the search efforts. He appealed to the media to play down on speculation to enable officials better concentrate on the emergency situation. “I am appealing to the press to please allow the military to continue their work because we’re in an emergency situation and the military is taking the lead

“Now we just heard that they sighted them somewhere and the military is heading to the scene,” he said. The attack comes almost four years after Boko Haram gained worldwide infamy for abducting about 276 girls at Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State. Scores of the girls have been freed in separate deals with the Nigerian government, but more than 100 are still yet to be found.

Although its details were still murky, the Yobe incident has brought back memories and fears of the Chibok girls kidnap, which gained worldwide media attention for several months. The state shares a border with Borno, which is home to the massive Sambisa forest that the Chibok girls were said to have been kept for years after their abduction.

Many of the girls were reported to have fled in different directions after the insurgents entered their school premises on Monday. One of the escaped girls told on Tuesday that she saw their attackers pushing some of her schoolmates in a truck and drove away with them. But Mr. Abdulmaliki said the school is currently on a one-week break to enable the authorities to resolve the crisis but insisted that the police have no confirmation of any kidnap.
