PoliticsOby Ezekwesili Officially Declares for 2019 Presidency (See Campaign Poster) by solaugo1(op): 6:05am On Oct 08, 2018
https://i1.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Oby-Ezekwesili-Officially-Declares-for-2019-Presidency-See-Campaign-Poster.jpg?w=842&ssl=1

LAGOS, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Former Nigerian minister Obiageli Ezekwesili, co-founder of a group to raise awareness about more than 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014, on Sunday announced that she will run for president next year.

Ezekwesili, a former vice president for Africa at the World Bank, issued a statement announcing her intention to run. Nigeria’s presidential election is scheduled to take place in February 2019. Ezekwesili, 55, served in Nigeria’s government between 2000 and 2007, first as minerals minister and later education minister.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who took office in 2015, has been selected by the ruling party as its candidate. The main opposition People’s Democratic Party plans to select his opponent at its convention on Sunday.

“I want to run for, and win, the 2019 presidential election to serve and put the citizens first by mobilizing and taking decisive actions on a number of big ideas that will help all of us build an exceptional nation,” Ezekwesili said in a statement.

Africa’s most populous country, which is also the continent’s top oil producer, emerged from recession early last year. But growth remains sluggish and inflation has remained high, above the central bank’s single-digit target range.

Ezekwesili’s emailed statement made no reference to affiliations to a political party and did not provide details of specific policies she would support. She said she planned to tour the country. “Governance keeps worsening. So we the citizens have decided to get into the political arena to make things right,” she said.

Ezekwesili, one of the founders of civil society organization Transparency International, was considered for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her anti-corruption work.

She is known more recently for her work as co-founder of Bring Back Our Girls, a campaign which seeks to raise awareness about some 270 girls who were kidnapped from their school in the northeast Nigerian town of Chibok in April 2014 by Islamist group Boko Haram. The campaign brought international attention to the girls’ plight.

Many of the Chibok girls managed to escape in the hours following their abduction or were released in the last few years, including 82 who were released in an exchange deal that included several imprisoned Islamist insurgents. About 100 of the girls are still missing and their condition is unknown.

PoliticsThe 12 PDP Aspirants Who Want To Chase Buhari Out Of Aso Rock (In Brief) by solaugo1(op): 9:23am On Oct 06, 2018
https://i0.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/PDP-Presidential-Candidates-Unities-Ahead-of-Convention-See-Photos.jpg?w=935&ssl=1

It's just a vew hours before leading members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) converge on the Adokiye Amasiemeka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to determine the man to oppose President Muhammadu Buhari for the right to sit down in Aso Rock from May 2019.

Here's a quick rundown of the aspirants:
BUKOLA SARAKI: He is a two-time former Governor of Kwara State and he is the current Senate President. He defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the PDP in the buildup to the 2015 election. He is now back in the PDP.

ATIKU ABUBAKAR: He served two terms as Vice-President to Olusegun Obasanjo. He is a perennial defector. But the defection in recent memory is when he moved from PDP to APC in the buildup to the 2015 general election. He contested for the presidential ticket with Buhari and lost. He is now back in the PDP. The former Vice-President is from Adamawa State.\

RABIU KWANKWASO : He is a two-term former Governor of Kano State. He defected from APC back to PDP because of his rift with his former deputy Ganduje who is now the Governor of Kano State. He leads a cult-like group known as Kwankwassiya movement.

SULE LAMIDO : He is a two-term Governor of Jigawa. He served as Foreign Minister in the first term of Obasanjo-led administration.

AMINU TAMBUWAL : He is a former Speaker of House of Representatives and the sitting Governor of Sokoto State. He defected from APC to PDP in 2014 and is now back in the PDP. He is the favourite to clinch the ticket — because he enjoys the support of Nyesom Wike, who is currently the party's biggest financier.

AHMED MAKARFI: He is a two-term former Governor of Kaduna State and former senator. He also served as a National Caretaker Committee Chairman of the PDP.

DAVID MARK : He is a former Senate President and a kind of denizen of the House of Senate because he has been in the red chamber since the country’s return to civil rule in 1999. He is from Benue State.

DATTI BABA-AHMED : A former House of Representatives member under ANPP. He is from Kaduna State.

JONAH JANG: He is a former Governor of Plateau State and a serving senator.

KABIRU TAMINU TURAKI : He is a former Minister and President of the Association of Former Ministers

IBRAHIM DANKWAMBO: He is the currently the Governor of Gombe State, anoffice he has held since 2007

ATTAHIRU BAFARAWA: He is a two-term former Governor of Sokoto State, serving from 1999 to 2007.

Business‘Spray’ Naira and go to jail from party venue; Say CBN (Read Press Statement) by solaugo1(op): 11:19am On Oct 05, 2018
Those who “spray” naira notes at parties risk going to jail, the Bankers Committee warned yesterday. Mobile courts are to try those bastardising the national currency, it said.

Issuing the warning after its meeting in Lagos, the Bankers Committee said the mobile courts would be deployed nationwide to try those mishandling the currency.

Cantral Bank of Nigeria (CBN) spokesman Isaac Okorafor said the police and the Ministry of Justice would be involved in the operation, adding:

“If a celebrant is dancing and you spray him/her, you may go to jail from the party venue because the law enforcement agents will be there, waiting to arrest you.

“It is the duty of law enforcement agencies to catch offenders and take them to court. Our collaboration with the police will intensify as we move to implement the mobile court for offenders.”

Admonishing Nigerians on how to use cash as gift, Okorafor said: “If you want to give, put the money in an envelop, and give it the celebrant. Let’s know that anybody hawking and writing on the naira will face six months in jail or N50,000 or both.”

EducationFG To Sack Unqualified Teachers In Dec. 2019 by solaugo1(op): 8:33am On Oct 05, 2018
https://i0.wp.com/news.assure.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/FG-To-Sack-Unqualified-Teachers-In-Dec.-2019.jpeg?w=750&ssl=1

Prof. Anthony Anwukah, the Minister of State for Education, says the deadline for teachers to acquire their professional license is December, 2019. Anwukah made this known at a news conference to mark the 2018 World Teachers’ Day in Abuja on Thursday.

According to the minister, the license can be obtained from the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). He said that attainment of a global competitive and quality education was through teachers’ adherence to professionalism.

“In order to enhance professionalism in the teaching profession, it is now required of every teacher to register and obtain a professional license from the TRCN. “This is in tandem with international best practices as a means of updating the professionals on issues germane to their growth and development in the profession.

“Also, in line with the philosophy of the National Policy on Education, the Federal Government through the ministry of education has been setting aside annually resources to improve the education sector through budgetary. “However, due to funding constraints arising from the dwindling national revenue and the demand of other equally important sectors, the annual capital outlay for education has not been adequate.’’

He stressed the need for every teacher to register and obtain a professional license, saying improving teachers’ quality was necessary through professsionalisation. The minister of state said that there was the urgent need to address the challenges confronting education as a matter of concern to the federal ministry of education.

He identified funding as a major problem facing the education sector, saying it had been hindering critical needs of the sector. Anwukah further emphasised that the teaching profession had been neglected by many Nigerians due partly to unattractive remuneration teachers.

The minister of state made a reference to Malaysia where the teachers received the highest salary unlike in Nigeria where teachers were poorly paid. He, however, said that the ministry had made efforts to curb some of the challenges by allocating funds for Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme through Universal Basic Education Commission.

He said that a creation of Teacher Education Development Fund Account (TEDFA) had also been done to support teachers across the nation. “For quality education, these teachers who are recruited must be properly trained and not just pushed into the teaching profession since this is where the future of Nigeria lies.

PoliticsPresidency Reacts To Viral Audio Of Leah Sharibu (Read Press Statement) by solaugo1(op):
We are aware of the audio in circulation concerning the unfortunate situation of our daughter, Leah Sharibu.

In dealing with terrorists, nothing is too trivial. The secret service is analyzing the voice. Our reaction will follow the outcome of the investigation.

For President Buhari, nothing will be spared in bringing all our girls home. He will not rest until all of them are freed.
