Arsenal are close to reaching a total agreement for the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon.

The Gunners are expected to pay a fixed fee of £55m while add-ons are still being finalised and could reach up to £8.6M.

It is understood there was a breakthrough in negotiations when Gyokeres’ agent agreed to waive a commission he was due from the deal.

This lowered the asking price for Arsenal on the guaranteed money without Sporting receiving less than they wanted.

Bringing in a striker has been a primary focus for Arsenal in this transfer window – they have explored conditions for a number of players, including RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Madueke, 23, has emerged as a surprise target for the Gunners, as Mikel Arteta bids to reshape his attack.

French club Montpellier have announced the signing of Nigerian striker Victor Orakpo on loan from OGC Nice.

Orakpo only linked up with Nice in January after impressing for Nigeria’s U-20 side at the 2022 FC Bayern Youth Cup.

The youngster was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the competition. Orakpo also finished as scorer with six goals.

The 19-year-old made five appearances across all competitions for Nice last season.

Former Arsenal and Netherlands captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been appointed assistant coach at Premier League champions Liverpool.

The Reds confirmed Van Bronckhorst’s appointment in a statement on their website on Wednesday.

The appointment of the 50-year-old former left-back comes as the Premier League champions reshuffle their senior men’s coaching crew.

“Liverpool FC can confirm a number of new appointments and departures within Arne Slot’s coaching staff ahead of 2025-26.

“Former Netherlands international and captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst joins the Premier League champions in the position of assistant coach, subject to receiving a visa.

“Van Bronckhorst won a host of major honours during a playing career that included spells with Feyenoord, Glasgow Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona, and since retiring as a player in 2010 after reaching the World Cup final that year with his country, he has moved into the dugout, starting out in an assistant role at Feyenoord.

“He advanced to take charge of the Eredivisie club himself from 2015 to 2019, and his time at the helm of Feyenoord featured a Dutch league title in 2016-17 and two KNVB Beker successes.

Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel says he’s optimistic Nigeria will win all their remaining games and qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

The three-time African champions currently find themselves in a precarious position in their qualifying group, sitting in fourth place and trailing leaders South Africa by six points.

Arsenal have reportedly submitted an offer to Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, who could exit Stamford Bridge this summer amid another wave of new arrivals at Stamford Bridge.

It is believed talks have started and Madueke is among the players being considered to strengthen the Gunners’ attack.

Madueke was a regular under Enzo Maresca last season as Chelsea secured a return to the Champions League and also won the UEFA Conference League title.

Inter Milan midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has disclosed that the Nerazzurri will be his last club in Europe.

Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana has announced his retirement from professional football.

Lallana’s retirement was confirmed by Liverpool in a statement on their website on Wednesday.

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu is upbeat his side can win the title at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The West Africans will be gunning for a record-extending 10th title in Morocco.

Madugu declared that the Super Falcons are battle ready for the task ahead.

Nigeria’s head coach to the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil, Samson Siasia, has dismissed claims by John Obi Mikel that he paid the flight tickets of the U-23 Eagles to Brazil for the games.

In a recent podcast hosted by former England international Peter Crouch, Mikel had claimed that those in charge of football in Nigeria have refused to refund him the money he spent on flight for the team to the Rio Olympics.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner explained that although the logistics were already included in the 2016 budget, top officials diverted the allocated funds meant for the team.

Even though the development happened in 2016, the 2012 UEFA Champions League winner with Chelsea said he is yet to be refunded.

“There is a story where you paid for everyone’s flight,” Crouch asked Mikel.

The former Super Eagles captain replied: “Yeah, for the Olympics, again we talk about the corruption. There was no money to pay for the flight, for most of these players, it is their first time going for a major tournament.

“So I thought, why not?, we got there and to this day, I still have not received reimbursement.”

Mikel said; “Nope”.

“We only had issues with hotel bills. I think, he did pay for some of the hotel bills, but that of the flight from United States to Brazil, Mikel did not pay for that.

Paul Onuachu is on the verge of completing a permanent transfer to Turkish Super Lig giants Trabzonspor.

According to reports emanating from Turkey, talks between the Black Sea Storm and Trabzonspor is at an advanced stage.

Trabzonspor have offered to pay €5 for the player, who cost Southampton’s €18m when he arrived from Belgian Pro League outfit, KRC Genk in January, 2023.

Barcelona have reached a preliminary agreement with Nico Williams with the Athletic Club winger expected to sign a contract that will keep him in Catalonia for the next six years.

This is according to an exclusive report from Foot Mercato.

The French outlet also writes that Williams will likely earn €12 million a season if his move to Barcelona is completed.

The Confederation of African Football,CAF, has named Nigerian referee Yemisi Eunice Akintoye among 18 officials that will officiate at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Akintoye, who was bagged by the Federation of International Football Association, FIFA, in 2020 is a member of the Lagos State Football Referees Council.

The 30-year-old impressed at the preparatory course held in Cairo, Egypt last week.

The course involved extensive technical assessments, physical fitness tests, and decision-making evaluations under match-like conditions.

Akintoye has officiated in several high profile tournaments including the CAF Women’s Champions League, WAFU B U-20 Championship and WAFU B Women’s Champions League.

Morocco will host the WAFCON 2024 finals from Saturday ,5 July to Saturday, 26 July 2025.

The Banyana Banyana of South Africa are the defending champions of the competition.

Atalanta head coach Ivan Juric is keen to keep Ademola Lookman at the club, reports Completesports.com.

Lookman has one-year left on his contract, and has been tipped to leave La Dea this summer.

The 27-year-old was close to joining European champions Paris Saint-Germain at the start of last campaign.

The Nigeria international has been linked with a move to Juventus, Napoli and Arsenal.

“It’s going to be a very tough season in the league, with many fierce competitors,” Juric was quoted by Calcio Napoli.

“The club’s idea is to keep both Ederson and Lookman. Even though the club already has a clear transfer strategy, I haven’t made any specific requests for players — not even for the ones already here.”The winger was one of the top performers for La Dea during the 2024/2025 season.

He registered 22 goals and five assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for the Bergamo club.

First Premier League Black Referee Rennie Dies Uriah Rennie, the Premier League’s first black referee, has died aged 65.

Rennie officiated more than 300 games between 1997 and 2008, including 175 Premier League matches.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former chair and trailblazing referee, Uriah Rennie,” said a Sheffield & Hallamshire County Football Association statement.

“Uriah made history as the Premier League’s first Black referee, officiating over 300 top-flight matches between 1997 and 2008. He broke down barriers, shaped our football community and inspired generations to come.”

Rennie recently revealed he was learning to walk again after a rare condition left him paralysed from the waist down.

Born in Jamaica, he moved to Sheffield as a child and grew up in the Wybourn area of the city. He started refereeing in local football in 1979 before making history in 1997 when he oversaw the top-flight match between Derby County and Wimbledon.

“Incredibly sad news about the passing of Uriah Rennie. A Black pioneering referee and leader in the game,” said Leon Mann, co-founder of the Football Black List.

“We owe so much to those who push open the doors. Uriah should never, ever be forgotten. “Thoughts and prayers with Uriah’s family and close friends.”

Rennie had been a magistrate in Sheffield since 1996 and campaigned on issues including improving equality and inclusion in sport, mental health and tackling deprivation.

He had a master’s degree in business administration and law and, in November 2023, was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sheffield Hallam University for his distinguished contributions to sport and his work with South Yorkshire communities.

In May, Rennie was installed as the new chancellor of the university.

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has expressed doubt on his chances of winning this year’s Ballon d’Or award.

Recall that Yamal played a key role in helping Barcelona secure a domestic treble in the 2024–25 season, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de Espana.

Speaking with El Partizado de COPE, the Spanish international stated that he can only win the Ballon d’Or award if he lifts the Champions League and World Cup.

“I don’t think about it. You’ll be in trouble if you think about winning the Ballon d’Or. You think about playing, winning, and it will come,” Yamal told El Partizado de COPE.

“If I win the Champions League and the World Cup next year, it will come. It’s about enjoying it and letting it come when it has to.”
