SportsLeicester City Manager Puel Hails Goal Hero Iheanacho by solbase10(op): 11:28am On Aug 02, 2018
Leicester City manager, Claude Puel has heaped plaudits on Nigeria forward, Kelechi Iheanacho after he hit the back of the net in the club’s 1-1 pre-season friendly draw against Spanish club, Valencia on Wednesday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Iheanacho opened scoring for the Foxes in the 11th minute before Daniel Parejo levelled scores for the visitors few minutes later.

It was his second pre-season goal for the former Premier League champions after he netted in the club’s 2-1 defeat against Italian outfit, Udinese last week.

Puel was pleased with the way his players acquitted themselves against Valencia, not least Iheanacho, who struggled for regular playing time at the club last season.

“I think he (Kelechi Iheanacho) came back with a good mentality, of course he cannot play for a long time at the moment with good fitness levels,” Puel told the club’s official website.

“I’m happy about the mentality of the players. They’ve come back with a good spirt and with a fighting spirit.

“I’m happy about this, but we needed to make attention and protect them with rotation and to work on their fitness step by step. We will see what’s happened. I was happy also, for example about Demarai Gray.

“He played as striker in the last friendly games, he made fantastic things. We have good players, good quality, good young players, good balance between experienced players and young players. I hope we can continue this good work and keep the good togetherness.”

SportsTyson Fury Labels Anthony Joshua A Disgrace For Deciding Not To Fight Wilder by solbase10(op): 3:02pm On Jul 25, 2018
Tyson Fury has labelled Anthony Joshua a disgrace for not reaching an agreement to fight Deontay Wilder in the United States.

Joshua holds the International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) heavyweight titles, but failed to reach a deal with WBC champion Wilder for a fight which would have unified the divisions’ belts.

Instead Joshua will take on Russia’s Alexander Povetkin, a mandatory challenger, on September 22 at Wembley as his next opponent after defeating Joseph Parker recently.

And Fury thinks Joshua is scared of fighting the American and believes the heavyweight division deserves better from their champion.

“I think it’s such a sad time for heavyweight boxing because you’ve got the so-called super champion and golden boy, Anthony Joshua, and he is avoiding Deontay Wilder and will not fight him at any cost,” Fury said in a video posted to Twitter.

“If you’re not going to fight someone for £40million, you’re not going to fight him for anything. It’s a disgrace and he’s a disgrace to boxing.

“And I think it needs somebody good enough to step up and take on the challenges and not be afraid – not be afraid to take risks and go to people’s backyards and do it.”

He also claimed that he never asked the reporters for money and that it was just offered to him. The coach also clarified that he received $750 not the $1000 claimed in the report.

He also claimed that he viewed the money as a trivial and symbolic value which falls within the gifts FIFA code allows for and that his influence over the players’ selection was never affected.

He also believes that he was never in breach of FIFA or NFF ethics code.

SportsDalung: President Buhari Can’t Defile Court Orders On NFF Crisis, DSS Excesses W by solbase10(op): 2:44pm On Jul 24, 2018
Sports Minister Solomon Dalung has maintained that President Muhammadu Buhari will not disregard court rulings as it concerns the NFF leadership tussle.

The Department of State Security (DSS) re-instated the Amaju Pinnick led board back to the NFF office in Abuja on Monday after Chris Giwa had taken over the reins of the federation ten days ago following a Supreme Court ruling and orders of the Federal High Court in Jos on the Nigeria Football Federation on April 27, 2018.

Dalung described the action of the DSS as “an invasion” by security operatives of the Nigeria Football Federation offices.

In a statement signed by Dalung and made available to Completesportsnigeria.com Dalung insisted that nothing has changed.

“What happened in the NFF is security excesses, but it will be sorted out,” Dalung said.

“As far as I am concerned, nothing has changed. There is no development after the Supreme Court ruling of April 27, 2018 and the Federal High Court Order of 5th June 2018 because the court has not vacated the order,” the minister said.

“Those who are presently trying to instigate confusion, using the name of the President must be aware that the President cannot go against the rule of law.

“The order issued by the court has not been vacated and the President cannot vacate a court order because there are clear cut processes of doing that.”

“We want to assure Nigerians that Government is sorting out the grey areas but nobody should drag the name of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria into this.

“The President is an advocate of the rule of law and he cannot be associated with the security excesses of a breach of the rule of law.”

“The federal government is urging members of the public to remain calm as it is doing its best to resolve the crises in the Nigeria Football Federation.”

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has already initiated a process of trying to bring the stakeholders together, to work out a road map out of this quagmire.”

“The stakeholders’ meeting billed for Tuesday July 24, 2018 will still go ahead as planned.”

SportsIwobi: Eagles Must Make 2018 World Cup Lessons Count In AFCON 2019 Campaign by solbase10(op): 12:02pm On Jul 20, 2018
Alex Iwobi hopes that the Super Eagles can learn from their early exit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and build on it for a better future.

Gernot Rohr’s men finished third in Group D after defeats to Croatia and Argentina, on either side of a 2-0 win over Iceland.

“The squad is young and we picked important lessons that will hopefully help us going forward,” the Arsenal winger told BBC Sport.

“Attention will soon shift to the Nations Cup and we must make our World Cup lessons count.”

Against Argentina in their final Group D match, the Super Eagles were four minutes away from booking a place in the knockout stages, but Marcos Rojo struck late to break their hearts.

“We had a lot of hopes and believed that we could do well. We are very proud of ourselves and are going to take the positives of course,” Iwobi added.

“We are just unfortunate about the last minute goal that came against Argentina which led to a defeat that knocked us out of the group. We are taking positives but we are very happy with what we did.”

The Nigerian fans had hoped that Iwobi would play a key role in Russia, but were left disappointed that the Arsenal player was only given a half against Croatia and late substitute appearances against Iceland and Argentina.

“It’s not just me or my tournament, it’s Nigeria’s tournament,” he remarked.

“The coach did put me in that position because he wanted to try something new, try something else, so I had no problems because at the end of the day it is what the manager decides is what goes.”

Next up for Nigeria is a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles in September.

SportsTevez Urges Messi Not To Retire From International Football by solbase10(op): 4:09pm On Jul 19, 2018
Former Argentina forward, Carlos Tevez, has urged Lionel Messi not to retire from international football, but advises that the country should do more to support their star player in the future.

The Barcelona man once again came under intense scrutiny after Argentina crashed out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup to France in the second round.

He scored just one goal in La Albiceleste’s four games in the competition.

“I think Leo has to think about himself,” Tevez told ESPN.

“He has to think that, if there is not a project that makes him happy and in which he feels comfortable, it is very difficult to take the responsibility of leading Argentina to become champions by himself.

“We are wasting a lot of time not having him happy and not being able to give him a hand to achieve that target. I think we are wrong in not being able to help him feel comfortable.

“As a player and as an Argentine, I tell him that we need him, that he tries to rest, that he keeps a cool head and that we need him. We need him because he is the soul of Argentina and, as long as he continues playing football, it has to be that way because he is Argentina’s biggest idol and he has to take that responsibility.

“Now [I tell him] to rest, keep a cool head and try to be well, then we need him to take charge and on the pitch.”
