Aare Ona Kakanfo was a title given to the generalissimo, the war general during the old Oyo Empire. An Aare Ona Kakanfo would lead battles, fight wars, mobilise and train “soldiers” and conquer the enemies. The title of Aare Ona Kakanfo was introduced hundreds of years ago to the Yoruba country by King Ajagbo, who ruled over 700 years ago. The introduction of the title was informed by the need to fortify the ancient, pre-colonial army of the old Oyo Empire which at one time could boast of over 100,000 horsemen. In recent times, the selection seem to have been informed by other considerations the chief of which is the acceptability of the leader among a large section of the people of the South West and such a leader being accepted as worthy Yoruba leadership by other nationalities in Nigeria. The selection involves several rituals and there have been speculations that the last two Kakanfos did not complete the ritual circles. Samuel Johnson in his book treatise on the Kakanfo stated that the Kakanfos are always shaved, but the hair on the inoculated part is allowed to grow long, and when plaited, forms a tuft or sort of pigtail, adding that Kakanfos are generally ‘very stubborn and obstinate. They have been more or less troublesome, due to the effect of the ingredients they were inoculated with. In war they carry no weapon but a weapon known as the King’s invincible staff.’ It is generally understood that they are to give way to no one not even to the King, their master. Hence, Kakanfos are never created in the capital but in any other town in the Kingdom. Kakanfo is akin to a field marshal and is conferred upon the greatest soldier and tactician of the day. ‘By virtue of his office he is to go to war once in 3 years to whatever place the King named, and dead or alive, to return home a victor, or be brought home a corpse within three months. Kakanfo usually has certain ensigns: The Ojijiko, and a cap made of the red feathers of the parrots tail, with a projection behind reaching as far down as the waist, an apron of leopards skin, and a leopard skin to sit on always the Asiso or pigtail and the Staff invincible. the following are the list of the past Fourteen Aare Ona Kakanfo (from archive) that had been: Kokoro igangan of Iwoye-Ketu, Oyatope of Iwoye, Oyabi of Ajase, Adeta of Jabata, Oku of Jabata, Afonja l’aiya l’oko of ilorin, Toyeje of Ogbomoso, Edun of Gbogan, Amepo of Abemo, Kurumi of Ijaye, Ojo Aburumaku of Ogbomoso (son of Toyeje) Latoosa of Ibadan Ladoke Akintola of Ogbomosho (the premier of western region during the first republic. MKO Abiola of Abeokuta Gani Adams of Arigidi-Akoko BRIEF HISTORY Kakanfo Ojo Aburumaku had no war to fight. He fomented a civil war in his native Ogbomoso which he then had a good sport of putting down with severity. Afterall, he was Aare Onakakanfo, the Supreme head of the Esos, the 70 military commanders who make the Yoruba warrior caste. Eso Ikoyi won kii gbofa leyin iwaju ni won fii gbota. Agba Ikoyi to gbojo iku toree gbalu. Ikoyi Eso, arogun yo. Kakanfo Kurumi was even more spectacular. He insisted that the Aremo must die with the Alaafin according to tradition. The truth was that he had been part of an earlier conference in which that convention was abolished. To enforce his desire, he made war on the rest of Oyo kingdom from his garrison city in Ijaye. His reputation as a warrior was legendary. He is portrayed in art as a no-nonsense nimble wit with a commanding presence. Aare Kurumi npe o, o londifa. Bifa ba fore ti Aare o ba fore nko? There was no excuse for refusing a call from the generalissimo. In a surgical commando strike, Ibadan special forces attacked at night his troops in Iseyin and wiped out the entire rear brigade. All of Kurumi’s five children who were company commanders died in that attack. Like his name, Aare Kurumi was ruined by death, indeed. I-k –u-r-u-m-i. It must be acknowledged though that a few of the kakanfos had glorious tenures. Oyabi was based in the garrison town of Jabata. He kept off the internal strife of the kingdom with the wily Osorun Gaa killing the Alaafins in quick succession until the reign of Adegoolu who linked up with the military to destroy the prime minister. The Eso were lead into the city like Caesar did across the Rubicon River and Basorun Gaa was killed by Oyabi. In Ibadan, the new city full of promise where Kakanfo Obadoke Latoosa had taken up residence, the scourge of the notorious slave dealer, Efunsetan Aniwura, was ended by the Aare Ona kakanfo. However, even he Latoosa was victim of the mystique of the office of supreme commander. Latoosa was confronted by a palace coup and in very dramatic circumstances, he committed suicide. He had a notorious slave according to history, who grew increasingly disrespectful of the generals. Latoosa did not curb this behaviour until the deputy commander, Balogun Ibikunle was insulted by the slave. Ibikunle could not believe his eyes when Latoosa asked the slave to state his side of the case like two equals squabbling. Ibikunle simply beheaded the idiot there and then. Latoosa then asked Ibikunle if he was ready to take the sceptre of office, to which Ibikunle answered in the affirmative. There was no negative response from the other commanders present. Latoosa had overrated his own popularity. Depicted as an overbearing and brutally magnificent warrior who went about like a masquerade, he was stunned by the turn of events and swallowed poison. He simply laid down and covered himself like one in sleep. Oyabi from Ajase lived very long and he was very loyal to Alaafin and Oyo empire. These and more are the intriguing story of Aare in the then old Oyo Empire. |
KATSINA—A woman identified as Sahura reportedly gave birth to quadruplets, all boys, in her home at Zakara area of Makera village, Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State without any assistance. It was gathered that after giving birth, Saturday evening, Sahura later proceeded to the General Hospital, Dutsinma. A source in the hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said though all the babies survived, they are underweight. The source also said the woman doesn’t have an ante-natal care attendance record and despite an offer to accommodate them for further examination in the hospital, they insisted on going back home to return the following day (yesterday), a promise they did not fulfil. According to the source, “it is true. The woman gave birth at home on Saturday. After the birth, the woman, the babies and the husband proceeded to the hospital on Sunday. “But when they were asked to stay in the hospital for further examination, they insisted on leaving to return the following day (yesterday). But as I speak with you we have not seen them in the hospital. “And upon interrogation, we discovered she did not attend any hospital for ante-natal care. Again, there was no scan before the birth.” Another source has it that the delivery of the quadruplets made it third of Sahura’s delivery. In October last year, one Gaje Zubairu, also without antenatal care, gave birth to quadruplets through caesarean section, but she died four days after. Three of the quadruplets survived, but one died days after delivery before the mother, Gaje, died. source; https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/01/katsina-woman-delivers-self-quadruplets-home/ |
5::Barrow, Alaska Earning the titles as both the northernmost and the coldest city in the United States, the town of Barrow, Alaska just so happens to also be part of the Last Frontier. Located above the Arctic Circle and roughly 1,300 miles south of the North Pole, Barrow has no wind barriers or valleys to protect its nearly 5,000 residents from sub-zero temperatures that occur 160 days of the year. Add in white out conditions and extremely low wind chill that make being outdoors nearly impossible and Barrow brings new meaning to the phrase “bitterly cold.” With July typically the “hottest” month of the year with an average high of 47 degrees, Barrow sees its coldest months in January and February with highs averaging at -8 degrees (yes, you read that right!) and lows plummeting to -20.4. The first snow of the season typically arrives in early October with the sun setting around November 18 and not returning until late January. The polar night, in addition to the frigid temperatures and no roads connecting the city to the rest of Alaska, leave Barrow’s native Eskimos literally secluded in the arctic tundra.

4::Fort Good Hope, Canada Thanks to its incredibly harsh climate, there are only around 43,000 people brave enough to live in the entire Northwest Territories province of Canada. Out of the Territories’ 33 communities, Fort Good Hope is one of the least populated towns with just over 500 people, the majority of whom are North American Indians. Reached only by air and nestled on a route used by the Northern Transportation Company, residents earn their living from hunting and trapping as the seasons allow. Despite seeing highs in the upper 60s in June and July, Fort Good Hope’s summer is short lived as the community spends the majority of the year below freezing or at sub-zero temperatures. Much like many of the other towns on our list, January temperatures prove to be the coldest with an average high of -10.8 degrees that has been known to drop to an average low of -25.1 degrees. Add in record-breaking wind chills and it’s no surprise that Fort Good Hope’s lowest recorded temp came in at a brutally cold -68.1 degrees!

3:: Yakutsk, Russia Staying in Russia’s Sakha Republic for the coldest place in the world, the rural city of Oymyakon is located on the Indigirka River and boasts a tiny population of 500 people. Named after the Oymyakon River, the community saw a temporary increase in people during World War II after the construction of the Alaska-Siberian airfield. However, with days lasting anywhere from three hours in December to 21 hours in June, many residents packed up and left to find a warmer and friendlier climate. Known as part of the “Northern Pole of Cold,” Oymyakon spends seven months of the year with sub-zero temperatures with the coldest months of December, January and February averaging -58 degrees with highs hovering around -44.5 degrees. In 1924 the town reported its coldest temperature on record at -96 degrees with only the uninhabited Antarctica holding a colder record at -128.6. Those 20 degree temps we first saw on the list don’t seem so bad after all, now do they?

2:Verkhoyansk, Russia Nestled just 419 miles north of Yakutsk in the Sakha Republic is the small Russian town of Verkhoyansk whose population is just over 1,300 people. Verkhoyansk sits on the Yana River and once served as a safe haven in the late 1800s and early 1900s when prominent exiles like Polish writer Warclaw Sieroszewksi sought refuge. Since then, the town saw another round of immigrants in 2012 only this time a pack of 400 wolves moved in and attacked the town leaving the local government to agree that the harsh climate and vegetation could barely support 500 wolves in the entire republic. While the wolves were devastating enough, dealing with the weather in Verkhoyansk is just as risky with the average temperature in January resting at -44.3 degrees with lows plummeting to -54.9. The town spends seven months of the year at sub-zero temperatures with its lowest temperature on record at -90 degrees, which has been repeated on numerous occasions. The summers, however, give Verkhoyansk’s residents plenty of time to warm up with June through August temps reaching highs in the 70s and 80s, which makes up for the town never recording a temperature above freezing between November and March.

Football Rules of our childhood 1-the fat is always the keeper 2-the game ends only if all players are tired (EXCEPT RULE 6) 3-no matter the score, the team that scores the last goal wins the game 4-there is no referee 5-only if it is serious 6-if the owner of the ball gets angry the game is over 7-the 2 best players can't play on the same team, so everyone chooses their players 8-if you are chosen the last one is a humiliation 9-if there is penalty the keeper is replaced by the best player of his team and says "not for good" to mean that after the penalty, the keeper returns to his post 10-when the ball comes out of the playground to a remote destination, it's the hitter who's going to get the ball 11-the best player on the ground is always on the same team as the owner of the ball 12-to start a game we always said "Epp the game begins" 13-to distinguish teams, a team should play shirtless 14- you kick the ball in the air to start a match 15- Its all massive attack, massive defence 16- Remember the owner of the Ball is FIFA So you've been through this like me Share!!!!. |

Nigerians seem to have been cultivating the act of honesty and social responsibility. An unidentified man has dropped his mobile phone number on the dusty trunk of a car he mistakenly hit in the absence of the owner somewhere in Lagos Larry McCoy, the owner of the car, was shocked at the sense of responsibility that he took to Twitter to share the photos and wrote; “I still can’t believe there are still normal people in this new Lagos, Some1 hit my car where i parked and wrote his number on the dusty trunk.” See screenshot of his tweet below; Obviously, Nigerians are getting better at being their brother's keeper.
