InvestmentRe: Mutual Funds by solistic: 6:17pm On Feb 26, 2018
Did you find that golden opportunity? I am interested....lol.....
sabanageorge:
You guys are still making the error of doing simple interest for MMF. That ~18% compounds monthly. If your 8m yields 120k this month, by next month you'll be doing 18% of 8.12m which is 121k. So there's a slight increase of 1k over two months at 18%. The interesting thing about MMF is the compounded interest which can get really high over several years.

Anyways, there's need for more investment opportunities. The rate from MMF is still pretty low and may not be inflation proof. I'm really looking at other investment opportunities. When I think of the fact that 2000usd on Bitcoins in 2010 will be over 500m usd today, I just get mad cheesy. I want to spot that new golden opportunity still in its baby stage today.

PropertiesRe: Construction Of Fourbedroom Duplex And Two Unit Of Two Bedroom Flat @ Isheriopic by solistic: 10:28am On Oct 02, 2017
Okay, thanks. I understand.
abdulwastecx:
It can still be done at the decking stage.
At the decking stage one will need to create an opening on the dpc in other to attached the starter bar to the dpc.
PropertiesRe: Construction Of Fourbedroom Duplex And Two Unit Of Two Bedroom Flat @ Isheriopic by solistic: 12:02pm On Sep 29, 2017
@Abdulwastecx, permit me to bring you back to this topic of providing the starter bar for the stair during the DPC level/ground floor slab. If this was not done at DPC level, can it still be done afterwards, like during the decking. I know that at that stage the reinforcement will not be attached to anything. What is the disadvantage of this?
abdulwastecx:
You provide for the starter bar of the stair (which also serves as the support reinforcement for stair other than cantilever and spiral stair) At the DPC level or ground floor slab level or ground floor level for stair carrying a very high load. here is a picture to help buttress my point better

Thank you very much Abdulwastecx.

We use Tiger.
I think we bought more Y12 for the slab but I can't pull out the number right now, I will check the list and get back. Thanks

@Abdulwastecx, great and nice work. Please can you remember the total quantities(tonnes) of reinforcement you finally used? I take it that you used more than below. Please confirm. Also did you use local rods or Tiger TMT? Many thanks.
abdulwastecx:
Reinforcement work
Starting materials.
1. 1.5tonnes of Y16 for beam reinforcement
2. 2 tonnes of Y12 for slab reinforcement
3. 0.5 tonnes of y8 for beams ring

InvestmentRe: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by solistic: 5:41pm On Aug 30, 2017
Ebunoyeyemi, you are getting it wrong. Don't give wrong information to your boss. He subscribed for 91 days bills and therefore was given the appropriate interest amount. If he subscribed for 365 days bills, he will be given the full amount. You must understand that the rate is per annum (365 days) and therefore if you subscribe for less that that, your interest will be prorated accordingly.
ebunoyeyemi:
Thank you so much, you made it simple and understandable. I asked my boss about TB yesterday and he said he won't do it again, that he did 1M for 91 days and all he got was 30 something thousand. I think he is not aware that the 13% was being divided into 4 and the the remaining 3/4 will be given to him after 364 days.

Thanks for your input. I will surely put that into consideration.

You don't have to stay in Westville. Staying close to Howard college is also fine. During my Masters program at UKZN, I lived in Manor gardens close to Howard college and took the Campus shuttle to Westville campus on a daily basis. Mind you, this bus service is free and it's scheduling is quite friendly.

Thanks a lot for your input. I will put into consideration.
ife01:
Hi
For the sake of your child, it's important you consider getting an accommodation on/not so far from a taxi route. Transportation could be terrible.
Since your Supervisor is on the Westville campus, it's better you stay around. There are quite a number of good preschools around.
Cheers.
TravelRe: General South Africa Visa Enquiries by solistic: 2:47pm On Jul 04, 2017
Many thanks @geekybabe for the details in your response. My dept/supervisor is in Westville. Please what is the average monthly rate for light and water in glenmore axis?
geekybabe:
1.Which of d campuses is your dept located? Stay close to your dept /supervisor

2. Houses are cheaper around westville campus compared to Howard. But Howard is more central and within town. Westville self con could be btwn 2100-2500 rands. Howard could be btwn 3000-3500 rands and could be without light and water. A miniflat with a sitting room might go for like 4k rands in howard/glenmore axis..exclusive of light and water

3. Durban is a place where u generally have to be security conscious.
TravelRe: General South Africa Visa Enquiries by solistic: 2:42pm On Jul 04, 2017
Thanks a lot Samtol4. My dept/Supervisor's office is at Westville. So, I might have to consider that. Also, I am coming with my 2 years plus child,
so I need a place close to a good preschool.
samtol4:
Depend on your program . Choose accommodation close to your dept / supervisor .

Many thanks @Chukuwka16 for your detailed response. I saw your PM and have responded.
Chukwuka16:
@ solistic I replied your pm.

I can only speak of school accommodation at Westville campus. The cost is around ZAR 25899 (for the complete session excluding holidays) and ZAR 1602 (for the current holidays - around 89 Rands/day). It is close to school and safe. Furthermore, I have the convenience of going to office at odd hours without fear.

The downside however are:
1. Sharing conveniences (toilet and bathroom) with other folks. The cleaners however come around everyday excluding weekends and public holidays.
2. Sharing kitchen with other folks. I haven't had a problem since other options do exist and besides the cleaners do a fine job keeping it clean.

3. Noise from other flatmates. Well it's normal since reading isn't primarily intended to be done at the residence.

4. Using the laundromat would involve you keeping an eye on it to see when there is less pressure. Most times during odd hours.

For off campus/private accommodation, the downside from interaction with my colleagues are basically:
1. Mobility - since it does involve some trekking to get out of school and the buses movement isn't really timed. They move when they get filled or as the spirit leads (lol).

2. Safety - there have been cases of muggings at night close to some spots. Cases of stolen laptops, phones and other valuables.

Factors that might affect your choice of residence - primary campus of research and mobility.

I hope this helps. If anything does pop in, I would modify.

I believe the bosses in the house would throw more light.

Regards and congrats in advance!

Hello all the SA gurus in the house, especially those at UKZN, I want to ask you a couple of questions with respect to accommodation at UKZN. I need some advise and I will appreciate if I can be guided.
(1) As a PhD student, I am considering to stay in an accommodation either close to Westville or Howard Campus. Which one will you advise and why.
(2) What is the cost implications of renting a one bedroom apartment(i.e. apartment has one bedroom, one living room often joined with the kitchen in an open plan setting.)
(3) Which of the 2 areas is the safest?

@Chukwuka16, @samuelUMOH,@femiaction and other veterans. Please advise. Many thanks.

Thanks for your detailed response BITWORKS. I will be following your projects.
BITSWORKS:
Thank you for your kind words. Before I embark on a project, I let the client know all the building codes and standards I must abide with and if we come to an agreement, I proceed with the project.

For any project size and land topology, it is advisable to do a soil test to ensure the right sub-structure is put in place. The recommendations from the soil test for this project specifies raft (excavation to dept of 0.3m) and pile foundation (dept of 6.0m).

Cost estimate for soil test varies from N180k to N250k depending on the consultant you engage and the location/land topology.

BITSWORKS, welldone on your professionalism, most especially deciding to do soil test. Some builders will tell you that it is not necessary to do soil test once it is not more than a storey building, what is your take on this? Also, for this particular project, what is the recommended depth according to the soil test result. Finally, what is the rough cost to do a soil test? Thanks.
BITSWORKS:
Raft foundation casting for the perimeter wall is conclude. We will start the block setting immediately.

Thanks so much lady G. God keep blessing your brain.
Abaluntu, if your appointment time is 9am and you get there by 6 or 7am, you will not be checked in. You can expect to be checked in around 8:30am. My appointment was for 7:30am but wasn't checked in until around 7:15am. So, my advise is to plan to get there an hour before your appointment so you won't waste much time waiting to be checked in.
